Rate this book
She's in danger from two men.

One wants her dead.

The other wants more than she can give.

Talia's desperate search to find her daughter takes her to a small island where danger lurks in every shadow. Her ex-husband, a brutal and unstable foe won't shake her resolve no matter his threats—or worse.

Detective Nick Foster has had a drug dealer in his sight for years. Finally, with a chance to put him away for good, Talia forces her way into the investigation, and things go terribly wrong. Described as cold and clinical, just the way he likes it, somehow, this determined woman gets under his skin.

Now, on the back foot with a deadly suspect, Nick's also out of his depth with the woman he must protect. This puts the entire case at risk and raises the stakes for everyone.

The clock is ticking, and the unlikely pair risk losing everything that matters most.

🌅Sleepy Waiheke Island attracts danger and crime and where's Chloe?!😲

This story mostly set on an island near Auckland, New Zealand has a lot packed in: danger and violent criminals, fast-paced action, romance and passion, all topped off with a mother's desperate love for her young daughter who's been hidden from her by her villainous husband. I loved the gripping opening which swiftly set up the violence and physical danger heroine Talia faces. There's also a mysterious leaker in the big police investigation into Talia's husband and a few twists and red herrings kept me guessing their identity (and yes I was wrong!) until the big climax.

Although Talia is built up as a strong woman fully prepared to look after herself and go her own way, I actually found her a bit of a loose cannon who disregards the effect her actions might have on others. Not my ideal heroine, but her impetuous attitude did add to the drama.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Talia has been left for dead by her evil, ex-husband when she refused to support his criminal endeavors. Nick has been trying to catch Randall in the act so he can take him down once and for all. What he didn't count on was his attraction to Talia. Being a detective, he doesn't trust easily so he fights this connection. She doesn't trust after being in an abusive relationship, and her sole focus is getting her daughter back. Their goals are not necessarily compatible. She puts her trust in another ex-con, someone who Nick trusts implicitly. There is plenty of danger and drama to this story that pulled me along and left me biting my nails at times. This was a difficult journey for both Nick and Talia as they had to figure out what is most important to them. This book is darker than many I've read by Cheryl Phipps, but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

A bit different than her usual!

An evil ex-husband, a search for a missing daughter, crime and danger abounds in this story that is quite a bit different from the author’s usual stories. I enjoyed this fast paced book. The action never stopped and the characters were interesting. I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

There’s no doubt that Cheryl Phipps conveys the value she places on and her personal awareness of love and the strength of family bonds in her debut novel Bend But Never Break.

Talia McLeod is a damaged and desperate mother, prepared to do anything to get her daughter back from her manipulative and dangerous ex-husband, Randall Hughes. Her knight in shining armour is workaholic detective Nick Foster whose own history of being thwarted by Talia’s ex creates another level of tension in this multi-layered romantic suspense.

Phipps pits Talia’s fierce love for her daughter against Nick’s equally fierce desire to nail Randall once and for all, and the clashes between the pair’s often conflicting goals are intertwined with the increasing awareness and attraction they feel for one other.

I particularly like Phipps’ ability to craft the complex emotional relationship between Talia and Nick. At times, it’s tender and sweet; at other times, intense and dangerous. To me, this was the most satisfying aspect of this enjoyable story. Adding in Nick’s ex-wife as an undercover cop created another interesting twist to this busy plot.

Phipps bases her novel on Waiheke Island near Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, creating a scenic and attractive backdrop for the machinations of her three key characters as they try to outwit each other in what becomes a duel to the death in a particularly powerful climatic scene.

I look forward to reading Ms Phipps next novel.
