In the land of fae, you're either the hunter or the hunted.
Ara, a high fae in the Court of Marsh, was trained since birth to kill. When it comes down to it, can she sever the tendrils of her morality and do it? After being taken prisoner by the sea queen, she manages an escape riddled with questions, only to arrive home to absolute heartbreak. Discovering everything she knew to be a lie, she sets out on a dangerous journey to learn the truth of her upbringing. But when the hunters begin to come for her, she realizes she isn't the only one that will need her lethal skills.
Meanwhile, Temir, a lesser fae in the vicious Court of Wind, hates no one more than himself. Gifted with the magic of healing and therefore protected from the prejudices befallen the rest of the lesser fae, he is smothered beneath the firm hand of the northern king. But when he makes a discovery that could change the world, he must decide, produce the serum and convince the one he is falling in love with to run away with him and his beloved mentor or let fear suppress him into defeat.
One high fae. One lesser fae. One goal. Find a way to fight back.
Blood and Promise was the debut new adult, high fantasy, fae novel for Miranda Lyn. She grew up smack dab in the middle of the United States with nothing to do but dream up stories of fantastical creatures and powerful heroines. Now married with three children of her own, an idea sparked a buried passion within her to follow a dream and teach her children that anything is possible if you’re willing to work hard for it.
I received an audio copy of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
✅ Faes and magical creatures 🆗Plot 🆗 Special chosen one 🆗 World-building 🆗(❌) Pace 🆗(❌) Romance 🆗❌ Characters ❗️❗️Trigger warnings: segregation (high faes and lesser faes), mentions of rape (not detailed), mention of child neglect, murders, some blood
I almost DNF this one. It was not bad, but I was bored for most of it and just didn’t care about any of the characters or the plot.
This book follows Ara, daughter of the leader of the Wild Hunt who would love nothing more than to live quietly with her parents, but is forced to attend balls and official events because she is young and unwed, and the King wants to have her at his events. Temir is the other main character, he is a lesser fae employed by another King of the realm, and he dreams of escaping his life with his mentor and one of their friends.
The beginning of the book promised political scheming, some betrayal and spying too maybe, and overall an interesting if not original intrigue, but it fell flat. I feel that nothing relevant happened with Temir, and Ara fell into the “chosen one that is better than everyone at everything she does” category and it annoyed me. I didn’t care that much about Temir, and Ara annoyed me.
The characters all felt uni-dimensional, and the villains were evil just because they were hungry for more power. They lacked depth in general. This book also has a dual point of view, but none impressed me. The dialogues between characters were also shallow, basic, very repetitive, and simplistic in general, making it seem like the characters were young teenagers at times. I was also expecting both main characters to meet eventually, but it feels that their plotlines are totally disconnected from each other, and Temir’s chapters mostly serve to show how lesser faes in the castle were treated I guess… Honestly, his chapters became tedious after a while, and I didn’t care at all for his romance either, so that didn’t help.
Temir is a nice character, and easy to like, but we have almost no backstory on him, and it is hard to figure out his ambition and goals, besides surviving another day. It seems all he does is live one day at a time, which is understandable considering his position, but since half of the book is from his point of view, I was hoping for a more driven or interesting character. I like him, but in the end, he is nothing special or truly memorable.
Ara is a super-skilled fighter who was trained from a young age by her parents, and she is exceptionally good at everything she does. She shows us again and again how she is the better fighter, and how she is more clever than everyone around her, yet she feels bland and juvenile at times. She is also the very special prophecized one, and that is a trope I struggle with in general. The fact that the prophecy and Ara’s destiny or quest were not really detailed didn’t help either. Even Ara didn’t seem to know what was happening half of the time, as everyone kept her in the dark.
While the world-building seems interesting and detailed enough, there is a tragic lack of backstory and general history of the land. The courts and rulers are presented briefly, but we do not know about their more detailed politics (besides the fact that Queen Morwena wants to rule everyone) or their past conflicts.
There are discrepancies in the timeline, and while it might seem like minor details, I kept noticing them and it annoyed me. Ara mentions that it takes a few days to get home from the castle, but when she gets home, she talks about the party she attended the day before. Later, she is held captive for one day, but says that she has not eaten in days, after she escapes, she wonders why her parents are not anxiously waiting for her and wondering where she has been for the past few days, but she also mentioned a few pages earlier that they were not expecting her for days. As I said, it’s minor details, but it became annoying after a while.
There is a hint of romance between Temir and another character, but honestly, I didn’t feel their chemistry or attraction toward each other at all. I was told it was there, but that’s it. It also felt like insta-love. Sure, they were friends and had known each other for years, but they went from being friends (and Temir didn’t seem interested in her) to kissing, to being obsessed with each other and wishing they could spend their life together in the span of a few days only.
Overall, this book had potential and good ideas, and the first few chapters were interesting and got me hooked, but I quickly lost interest in the story as the author failed to build upon the good ideas that were presented, and the book ended up being boring and underwhelming.
If you’ve been searching for a tough, bad ass heroine who swears like a pirate and has quips for days - call off the search!
High fae, Ara, is one of the POV in this epic fantasy set in a world where the high fae are heartless and corrupt and the lesser fae are treated like trash.
As Ara’s reclusive life is flipped on its head, we follow her quest to find out why. Alongside her journey, we follow Temir, a sexy lesser-fae male with stag horns, who is kept by the king due to his power to heal people by touch.
These two very different stories tell us two sides of a story which I hope will collide in the second book! Gripping, funny and heartbreaking, Blood & Honor has everything you could wish for and I am HERE for it.
*I received an ARC of this book in return for my honest review*
If your thinking of reading this book, DO IT. My book hangover is still so bad after devouring this book. The world that Miranda Lyn created is filled with so much detail it’s hard to put it into words for a quick review, so I’ll do my best.
Two characters, two captivating storylines that will keep you going chapter to chapter to see what will happen with Ara and Temir. Both characters equally enthralling yet different from each other.
You follow Ara, who starts on a dangerous quest to find out who she really is after tragedy befalls her and forces her to question everything she thought she knew. Determined to put the training she was taught since birth to keep herself alive and enemy’s out of her way in her search for the truth. With her character as the story progresses you see the struggle she has within herself to trust and to accept or deny who she is. But what remains strong is her smart mouth and sarcasm that may get her into trouble from time to time ;) Such a great character to read!
As Ara is on her dangerous journey Temir is facing danger every second he’s alive. Living in the Court of Wind with a heartless king (to put it lightly) has its perils. Add to the fact that he’s a lesser Fae in a world where lesser Fae’s are usually treated as nothing and killed with little regard and you can see why his storyline is equally as heart pumping as Ara’s. The only thing saving him from the same mistreatment as his fellow lesser faes is his healing ability. Through this book you really get to see his character development and how he battles within himself to do as he’s told and nothing more to ensure his safety and the ones around him or possibly defy the king and risk everything. By the end of the book the decision he makes changes him forever.
I could seriously go on and on about this book, so many great characters, high risk scenarios that keep you on your toes, and let’s not forget the badass fighting scenes! Sarah J. Maas fans, Holly black, Cassandra Claire and even Christopher Paolini fans will devour this book in a heartbeat. So what are u waiting for! Do not miss out on grabbing this book!
“The sun will set on this day, whether you will it or not. It will rise tomorrow on a new day and you will once again start anew. The decisions you made in the past will not stop the sun or the moon or the stars from their dance across the sky. You must always move on, son. Hard as it may be. Now, let that moment pass and come back to this one. There’s a beauty waiting for you.”
This book takes you to the Fae realm of Alewyn. Told from alternating perspectives, this adult fantasy book will take you into the lives of Ara - high fae, and Temir - lesser fae. I loved all the character development in this book. I loved Temir and his genuine innocence. Ara is strong and bold and does not step back from a challenge. You’ll easily fall in love with the characters in this book and feel all the emotions! This book will definitely leave you hungry for more!
Wow! What a ride! This book was fantastic! It was everything I wanted in a Fae novel. Miranda creates a completely beautiful world with such detail you feel like you're right there with the characters. The story follows Ara (High Fae) and Temir (Lesser Fae), and their different points of view. You will fall in love with all the characters, their inner dialogue, and especially their witty banter. Be prepared to have all the feels in this book because you get them! I would dare say you might need a tissue or two as well. By the end of this book I was completely enthralled and wanting more! I NEED BOOK 2 STAT! Don't miss out on this one, you are most definitely going to want to read it!
So I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. So I had personally seen this book all over bookstagram one day. I LOVED the cover, and it really intrigued me!
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Characters ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ MC ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Enjoyment ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Final Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tropes: Chosen Ones, Dual-POV (Not a trope but I thought you should know!) [There's also a cliff hangerrrrr]
Trigger Warnings: Language, Violence, Death, Sexual Harassment (No Rape)
Would Recommend for... people who are looking for sassy heroines, a really nice follow up to ACOTAR, epic fantasy lovers, people who love first person POV, and people who love NA!
Would not recommend for... people who don't like sassy heroines, people who aren't huge fans of multiple points of view, first person narratives.
Age Recommendation: 16+
So I am back to writing reviews WOOOOOO. But seriously, if you're going to pre-order a book, I highly recommend this one if you've been searching for that NA itch to cure your ACOTAR needs, then this is definitely it. Ara is a very badass sassy heroine. To me she's like Aelin dumped in the story line of Wicked King. Temir is SO PRECIOUS. I loved his storyline as well. Just a FYI, the two storylines in the book AREN'T love interests so adjust your expectations accordingly!
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON
Okay so I just love doing gifs. You know I do!
Alright so um let's get some stuff out the way.
This is how I envisioned Ara the whole time.
She's fun. BAHAHA She's always beating up people left and right I swear.
Her whole storyline was like...something SUPER dramatic happens
and then she's kicking someone's ass
and before she does that she has some sassy inner dialogue lmao
Thats how she feels about most people I assume hahaha
So her storyline was definitely one that in my opinion was full of puzzling moments because there were things hidden from her. I really enjoyed her POV for the twists and the action. And you know I was living for the SASSSSS.
But can we just stop for a moment. Cause I called it from the beginning of my read.
THE. PRINCE. IS A HOTTTTTTIEEE
Cue Prince montage
I KNOW HE PROBABLY LOOKS NOTHING LIKE DAMON/IAN BUT WHO CARES
He gives me that bad boy smart ass vibe.
Can I have him?
So moving on to Temir. I was a huge fan of his story line.
I wanted to protect him like a little lamb. HE NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED OKAY
he's a cinnamon roll okay?
And I loved Gaea. As his love interest, she really balanced him out. She is also sassy as well but a bit more fun than Ara.
What I will say is... THERE WAS ONE THING...
just one
I swear
Trust me.
But there was one thing that kind of was like...
TEMIR HAS POWERS TO KILL AND HIS EXPLANATION COMES FROM A BACKSTORY GIVEN IN THAT VERY MOMENT.
I'll forgive you. But I was SO focused on his truth potion and all of a sudden my cinnamon roll KILLS SOMEONE
LIKE WHERE DID THIS COME FROM
I wont be forgiving you anytime soon for that one.
ALSO OLEONIS...
Yeah I am just going to stop there. lmaoooo
Can't wait to read book two because the only thing now I NEED rn is THAT PRINCE.
Where do I start with this gem! From page one, I was whisked off into the land of Fae following the point of view of a lesser fae and a high fae. This is Mirandas debut novel and what a debut it is! The author did a fantastic job with the magic system and world buiding. It has been a while since I got really lost in a book and I enjoyed this story so much. Fast paced and well written, this book had it all. Action, romance, witty banter and fairytale legends. I loved the scheming and twists that the story took and I am already in anticipation for the next book in the series!
This has probably been one of the toughest reviews I have ever written purely because I loved this book so much that I have struggled to put my feelings into words. If you like Fae, Sarah J. Maas, Holly Black, or a bad ass heroine, then this book is for you! Prepare yourself to be captivated by this amazing story as you won't want to pass this book up.
First off, I made the mistake of beginning this book right before going to bed as it usually takes a few chapters for me to get invested in a new book. DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE! Miranda doesn't just gradually pull you in for an amazing journey, she grabs you by the horns and throws you into her world in the best way possible. I found myself desperately trying to read chapters whenever I was able to. I felt connected to the characters in such an emotional way where I truly felt like I had stepped into their world and was living the adventure with them. Every spark of joy or pain, I felt alongside them and I couldn't get enough of it.
Another thing that was done beautifully in this book is the two different POVs. Generally, I am not a huge fan of multiple POVs in a story as it can feel confusing, mundane or quite frankly unnecessary, but Miranda knocked it out of the park. What amazed me the most is that unlike most multiple POV novels, the two story lines don't really collide in this book (fingers crossed they do in the second though!). Instead of seeing the same moments or stretch of time played out between two POVs, you get to view what's happening to the MCs who are in two completely different locations in a way where the individual stories help support the overarching story line.
For the negatives, I really can only complain about two things. One, it ends on a cliffhanger and two I don’t have the next book. That's it folks! I have no negatives about the story itself, the writing style, theme, anything! I loved this book so much and I am just dying to get my hands on the next one. This is definitely a must read and I highly, highly recommend everyone read it. I promise you won't be disappointed… well besides not having the next installment that is!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author for review purposes.
Best book I’ve read in 2020! When it comes to fae I’m hard to please, but I was utterly blown away. Miranda Lyn creates a world that is so unique and magical that you can’t help but find yourself falling in love with it.
Throughout the book you follow two characters and you get to see them endure trials, hardships, and many other adventures. Both of these characters are so uniquely designed and diverse individuals. They are unlike any characters I’ve read before.
In part of the book you follow Ara who has a high Fae that isn’t like the others. And throughout the story you get to see Ara grow and become a woman and create an identity of her own, breaking out of a mold which she thought she was bound to. Such a beautiful transformation.
In the other parts of the book you follow a young lesser Fae who’s been raised in a compromising position. You follow him on his journey of discovering who he’s meant to be and that it’s okay to be who he is.
If you are thinking about reading this book, I one hundred percent recommend it! Especially if you’re a fan of of Sarah J Maas. This is one of best universes I’ve read since ACOTAR. I can’t wait for the rest of this series!
*I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion*
This book hooked me from the first sentence. I couldn’t put it down. Both main characters are brilliant but Ara is one of my favourite characters, ever. The sass levels are at an all time fabulous high. She reminds me of an ill tempered Buffy - replace wooden stakes with high Fae pointed ears, a butt load of weapons and a gloriously bad attitude. Tem is the other main character and he is a scrumptious cinnamon roll. He’s got a hard life but always puts everyone else first and I adore him!! He is a lesser Fae in a kingdom that hates his kind and I felt all of the injustice he endures. Both main characters have enchanting individual storylines with separate love interests and I can’t wait to see where this all goes. The author has created an epic fantasy world and I’m addicted. I felt every emotion going and was enthralled with all of the twists and turns throughout. This is a must read to any fantasy fan. It’s adult themed with strong language and graphic scenes. I received an arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book is EVERYTHING I love and MORE in a book! I was captivated throughout the entire book, i finished it in two days! I loved the MCs inner dialogue, strength and confidence. The world building is fantastic and i really enjoyed watching the characters grow through out the story. The book is full of humor, drama and action. I can’t wait for the authors next book to come out!
LOVE. This was just the Fae book I needed to pull me out of my reading slump! I love the world, I love every single character and now I have a book hangover and cannot wait for book two! Definitely read this!!!
Oh my goodness, where to start. This book gave me serious Throne of Glass vibes, while still being unique. Not only did the author do a great job with the world building, she also did a great job making me feel invested in the lives of the characters. I loved the dual perspectives. I really enjoyed following Ara on her journey, while getting to see the inner workings of the castle with Temir. I absolutely adored Ara and how sassy she was. She is such a strong female, who is so compassionate and kind, but will still kick your butt. Temir, is equally amazing. The love he has for his mentor and his dedication he has for helping people is astounding. At first glance, he seemed so timid but then so passionate. Watching both of these characters grow was just phenomenal. This book got me out of a month long slump, and I can not wait to read the rest of the series. If you are looking for a book with great action, equally amazing storytelling, with some Fae mixed in, I would highly recommend this book.
When I started reading Blood and Honor, I thought....is this going to be a cliche, same old same old Fae story?....but I was pleasantly surprised! Miranda had a fresh new take on the Fae world. The main character is refreshing, spunky and I love her attitude! The story was a little confusing at first, only because there are so many characters to learn, but once I caught on, I was enthralled and couldnt put the book down. Once it was over, I instantly wanted to know more and read the next. Cant wait to read the 2nd book!!!
What a book! I was hooked in right away and got lost the adventure with Ara and Temir. The world and characters are so well crafted that I fell in love with them immediately. We get to view the world through two very different points of view, Ara a high fae, and Temir a lesser fae and it really helps to get you fully immersed. The author does an exceptional job of really giving us a wide range of emotions along the way as you will loathe the villains, cheer on the protagonists, and enjoy meeting all the smaller side characters they bump into along the way. If you enjoy fantasy reads then this is definitely the book for you.
Gonna be honest... When I first started reading it, I was on the fence. I love books about the Fae but for some reason it wasn't clicking with me. I tried it again a week later from where I left off and it got good. Fast. I really enjoyed this novel, if you can push through the first part you'll find a story full of badasses and adventure. Would definitely recommend. Cannot wait for book 2!
This book so everything I needed and more! I had such a book hangover after going through the Sarah J Mass series and this book hit the spot! The book is so beautifully detailed and the fairies are very reminiscent of Holly Black’s stories. The main character was a complete bad ass and takes no one’s crap, which I loved. 10/10! If you’re hesitant about reading DO IT DO IT DO IT!!
( I was provided an ARC for an honest review by the author.)
My guys. This effing book. Took off and did not stop until the very last page. I devoured this book in two sittings, I could not get enough. Ara is SUCH a kickass woman and we all know I love an independent dangerous queen! Also Temir deserves the damn world and I just want him to be happy. This story is totally character driven, which usually I have trouble getting into but HOO BOY I am a lot for words!!!!! All of our hero’s are amazing. All of our villains are psychotic. Cuz what ya gonna do in a Fae world? Be a well regulated and calm ruler? Of course not. Ugh, the drama. The fight scenes. The romance. If this book wasn’t already on your TBR add it right now cuz holy fae you’re gonna have a great ride.
This fast paced adventure is absolutely captivating and beautifully written! If you love a good action adventure with a badass heroine and some exciting romance on the side then you will enjoy the Fae Rising series. I absolutely cannot wait to read the second book!
I really loved this book! The writing was detailed and flowed so nicely. Once I started this book, I could not put it down ♡ I loved that the story progressed and hopped into action and it kept my short attention span hooked into the adventure. No spoilers from me, but when do we get the next book?!?!
Amazing! I was worried about the back and forth when it started but the author managed it really well! On the edge of my seat waiting for the next book now!
Fantastic for Sarah J Mass fans! Step into a world full of fae magic. Great world building and strong female lead, snarky, strong willed, and fierce. I loved this book so much great adventuring the main character has a Robbin Hood vibe she grow up wealthy and is royal yet the events in her life and her upbringing has made her a good fae unlike the rest of the high fae and she fights for the lesser fae, don’t get me wrong she has her own intentions but she see the value in her beliefs and helps those in need which I love Prejudice be damned! Tem the authors other story arc is interesting as well while I do enjoy his chapters and his story line it’s Aras I find most intriguing and want to know more of. Dying wish there was more interaction with Fen the fire prince heir, but it was clear the second book would focus more on that. I can see this will be an Enemies to lovers ship and I love that. I love their magnetism, and well the prince sounds drool worthy! I feel honored to have gotten to read it early!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a much needed solid fae read. I didn't realize how oversaturated I was on SJM's fae world ( in reading and bookstagram). I was craving a new fae fantasy and this fit the bill.
Told in two POV's the story follows Ara ( high fae) and Temir ( lesser fae). Two people on the opposites sides of the social status who want the same thing...to fight back. Ara is on a quest to find out who she really is after finding out the hard way that her parents trained her from birth for a reason. A very big reason. Temir is a lesser fae better off than most because of his rare ability. In reality he is trapped and has some dangerous choices to make.
The book sucked me in from the beginning. It has action, political intrigue and a light romance. If you're looking for a new fantasy you really can't go wrong with this.
I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Let me just say this book took me by surprise! I was expecting something similar to ACOTAR but it was far from what I’d initially thought. It reads more like an adult fairytale than your average fae series and I find this so refreshing.
I fell in love with the lore and characters right off the bat. I absolutely adore the main characters Temir and Ara. It’s always hard for me to really like female leads in books so that is a huge plus for me! I’m looking forward to these two possibly meeting in the future.
All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a new fae series to read. Here you have a perfect balance of suspense, action, magic, and romance. ;) I cannot wait to read book 2!!!
Do you like reading books about the Fae? You really need to check out this book! It gets you from the very beginning to where you are trying to focus on work but you can't because you need to know what happens next! I really couldn't put this book down.
You get to read from the perspective of 2 different characters and it is wonderful. You get two different sides, one high fae (Ara) and one lesser fae (Temir) and really get to experience the world fully because of it. I loved both characters and I really can not wait for the next book!
Ara is my favorite type of female main character - strong, smart, sassy, and real. She's a bad a** in all the ways I admire and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her.
Temir is an awesome male lead and I'm interested to see where his character goes in the series. My only gripe (in a good way) was that I was waiting for Temir and Ara to cross paths, so I'm hoping to see that in the future.
The romance from B&H is light in this book and there's a lot of political intrigue that carried me away. Solid read, you won't regret it!
Blood and Honor is everything I ever wanted in a Fae Fantasy and more! We follow two unfolding story lines as the plot continues to thicken and unfold. Ara, a High Fae who is sassy, empathetic, and a an overall badass and Temir, a lesser Fae with magical powers and a pull to a higher purpose. There is snark, many laughs, tears and so many other emotions woven into this diverse Fae world with warring kingdoms. The world building and character development are so beautifully done. Buckle up and enter at your own risk, for before the cruelty of the Fae!!!
Miranda Lyn’s debut novel leaves you begging for more! A fae realm on the brink of war, a broken caste system riddled with oppression and terror, high fae and lesser fae must work together to save their world.
