Can she handle everything they are?

True to her Hopi mother’s restless spirit, Terena Rothrock follows news stories all over the Southwest. Lately, though, her heart is calling her back to the rez. But not before she swings through Phoenix to see her cousin race his amazingly fast new horse.

At the track, two powerful men watch the horse with suspicion in their eyes. Watch Terena with the drive to possess her oozing from every pore. When they seem to shift into stallions in her mind’s eye, shock—and arousal—flood her body.

Far from home and their herd, Nokoni and Hah-Tee can’t afford to draw attention to themselves. Instant attraction to Terena complicates their already competitive relationship, but she’s their one connection to the man they suspect stole one of their mares.

Overcome by instincts as ancient as time, the urge to mate rolls over them with the speed and ferocity of a desert storm. Yet even as Terena struggles to make sense of her desire for the swift, mysterious shifters, danger lurks. Someone is out to collect every last one of the horses born with wings on their feet—even if it means bullets must fly.

Under her "real" name, Vonna Harper has published more fiction than she can keep track of . These include category romances for the major players as well as the 'juicy' stuff. She also penned a series of well-received Native American historicals. One earned her finalist status in both the Women Writing the West Willa award and Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. Before discovering romances, both erotic and otherwise, Vonna 'confessed' all kinds of nonsense for the confession magazines.

When asked about erotica research, she insists, "Of course I've time-traveled to the ancient Everglades, infiltrated bondage strongholds, done wilderness search and rescue, and spent a night trapped in a workout gym with Mr. Universe. How can I possibly write about something I haven't experienced?"

As for day jobs, "I've been a commercial pilot, brain surgeon, worked as a white-water river guide, bee keeper, snake charmer, and garbage collector."

Horse shifters.
I mean…how sexy is that?

Turns out, not sexy at all.

I have read a lot in erotica. I have read a lot of taboo. But I was never more disturbed while reading a book. This one has broken all my ‘ew’ lines and just gone out the roof.
Let me clue you in, why to disregard the cool sounding blurb and NOT pick this book up…ever:
Colts and fillies and breading.

You are still not getting it, eh?
Good for you. I wish I could forget it.
Brain bleach is completely needed. So…be aware of the following spoilers….

Now to make my point and ruin some peoples day by imagining this:
The heroes are horse shifters. The older one is the heard stud.
Eh…yeah…that means, what you think it means. All the little colts and fillies in the herd are his.
A gazillion horse babies and some grown up horse kiddies too.
I mean…would you not just die of lust for a man that has his own HERD of children?
But, if that is not to your taste, then by all means, take the other, younger hero. He is the future herd stud. He is the one that will take over the main stallion duties from the older guy. Ergo, more horse kiddies on the horizont!

When the younger stud did not take any mares after they had sex with the heroine, I was kind of hoping all the horse cheating (yeeesh. Could that sound more strange? Or gross?) will stop and that the guys will be plain old men, and maybe settle down?

No such luck.
The epilogue is officially the most horrible part of the book. I think I have permanent wrinkles from frowning at it.

In the epilogue we find the heroine lolling around on Lady, one fine girl horse. Lady, is the daughter of the older horse shifter.
I have to say, here and now, that sitting on your lovers daughter is strange in my world, but what the heck, right?
The heroine is talking to the wise Comanche Quana. In this conversation we find out Lady is soon to be very fertile, and wooohoo…what does that mean? It means, the younger shifter can use that hefty cock of his (excuse my French) to impregnate her! Because we have to keep the herd living, babe! And seeing as how the older shape shifter is her daddy, we can have her mating with him.
We could, in no way use one of the other gazillion horses out there, because then the younger horse shifter sperm would all go to waste!
Yeeeeah….a happy epilogue is just not complete if one of your lovers is not cheating on you with a horse. But, eeeeh! It’s for the good of the world, so it must be ok, right? Right?
(Don’t answer that.)

Now…you probably think nothing more could have made me cringe here……Uh-huuuh. There is more.

What, dear Lord in heaven, could be worse than this, you ask me?
It seems there is a big possibility some of these lady horses are gonna learn to shift and become huuuuman.
Hm. So. How ever is that going to work?
To my utter horror, I keep picturing the situation where the heroine is housing a horse shape shifter female that is the daughter of one of her lovers, and the mother of children produced by her other lover. That is going to turn out so pretty…not.

Also, I have put up a moron-heroine alert on this book. I was pretty skeptical about her trough the whole thing, but when she breeds the men she loves for a living in the epilogue? You just know there is something wrong with her. Very, very, VERY wrong.

All in all, I have no idea what was the point of this book. I guess to…shock? Well, it shocked me all right! But all things considering, it was a real bad book. Why?
Because it is unable to let you feel anything sexy or warm and fuzzy.
There is just too much horse sex/cheating...and all the ‘I love you-s’ are not able to fight that.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I must admit, after reading “shifters ménage” I thought this book would be straight up smut.😂 Little did I know I’d be surprised though and positively so, because this book was more than just smut!

I did include cultural aspects and a kind of mystery surrounding how the shifters came into being that was super interesting. I loved how this mystery combined legends and a little bit of magic, I loved how the Hopi cared about the land and even though yes, there is smut, it’s not as much as I thought in the beginning and it was… tasteful!

There was a relatively open end to the story that left a few questions open for me, especially concerning the future of the shifters and while I did like the story and the mystery surrounding everything, the main character and I unfortunately didn’t click. It felt like she didn’t really open up to me and I’m sure she had a lot to tell. Connecting to the characters is always super important to me, which is why I “only” give 3 stars.

I do see a lot of potential in this story though. I think this premise could be expanded into a duology maybe, in which the future of shifters generally and the characters in particular would be addressed more and the beginning could be a little slower, with especially the main character being introduced in more detail, so the chance to connect would be higher. I would read it, because I think when it comes to writing style the author did a wonderful job! The writing is fluid and easy, never was there any confusion on what was meant on my part. PLUS, the story itself is super original, which is great!! I'd definitely like to read more from Vonna Harper.❤️

This was a new twist on how the shifters came into being which I liked. I liked how she explained horse behavior and how that translated into their "human" aspect. I liked a glimpse into Hopi culture. (I have no idea if that discussion was accurate or not). There may be spoilers below beware.

So there were some aspects of the story I liked, however, overall I was a bit dissappointed. Nothing squicked me out ( thats hard to do) There are some unanswered questions and confusing issues. I do realize that there needs to be some suspension of disbelief when reading any PNR. However some things really distracted me. How did they learn to talk? They have awfully big vocabularies for just learning. Some complex things they seem to grasp but then others not at all. It seemed a bit inconsistent. The sex scenes were ok but seemed a bit mechanical. I do not like the fact they have to go back and breed with the herd. Once the human intellect comes in and the relationship develops, I feel that should be done. I like the one "mate" ( or 2 as the case may be) for all time type of thing with my HEA. Anything else is to close to cheating for me. I understand this is typical horse behavior but for a romance even erotic romance I like fidelity in any kind of relationship. In shifter romance this means if they are in their fur or not they remain faithful to their mate (or mates). However, as I look back I'm really not sure if it was made clear that she was their mate or just a convenient f@$# buddy that they really liked.

To be fair I have read others by this author that I enjoyed, but this one just did not make the grade.

This took me forever to get through, part of the reason for the rating. If it was compelling, if I was dying to know what happened next, it wouldn't have taken me this long. The other part of it is that the sex scenes weren't that great. This is M/F/M... they should be smoking! But the only thing smoking, apparently, was her body when she was near her shifters. I never really got a feeling that the guys loved her, even though there were discussions of a long-term relationship. Granted, maybe it's because they were shifters -- horses first, men second -- and they just couldn't "show" how they felt? I don't know. It all just seemed so unfeeling. It was more biological than anything... they were drawn to each other, but there was just no emotion there. And what sex scenes there were (I counted three... wait, maybe four) were very confusing. I still have no idea how the first one happened when the jeans were around her knees.

This was a group read, and not likely something I would have chosen on my own, but I had high hopes for it. It sounded good. It just didn't turn out that way for me.

This book is a standalone paranormal ménage a trois romance, featuring Indigenous Americans who can shapeshift into horses.

Content warning:

Horse Racing
Exploitation
Gun Violence
Death
Bureau of Land Management
Mustang training “breaking”
Horse theft
Police (Tribal & American)
As always, your mileage may vary, & there may be others not listed here.

Characters of Colour?

YES! The main cast are all Indigenous Americans. Our heroine is biracial, & has some struggles with that, which is entirely understandable. The people’s specifically mentioned are Hopi & Comanche. I am not an Indigenous American, so I have no notion of whether this piece is respectful or a misrepresentation.
What I can discern is that the characters do not seem to be 2-dimensional stereotypes. They seem well developed, with understandable struggles. They seem to have been written from a place of respect.

QUILTTBAG/Queer characters?

None explicitly mentioned, though the two Love Interests are mostly comfortable with each other.

Disabled characters?

Well… the Love Interests are horses, & have little understanding of the world they find themselves in…
Otherwise, no, none of the characters have a physical, mental, intellectual or invisible disability.

Worth my time?

This one wandered about quite a bit. It took about 7 hours, spread across 3 days (I kept getting distracted). There are a few instances where we are left hanging, which ratchets up the tension, & the plot ended up in some very different sticky situations that one would expect. The characters are mostly compelling, the story has a decent idea of where it’s going, & it gets everyone there in once piece. In saying that, I think I would have enjoyed a bit more character growth between the Three. Seeing the relationship put down firm roots, as well as giving a stronger idea of where it would go after the book, would be ideal.

Re-read?

It’s entirely possible that re-reading this book would give me a clearer understanding of the characters & storyline. Whether I do actually pick it up again remains to be seen.

Recommend?

Anyone looking for Indigenous American characters at the fore!

This book was sent my way, all because I would review it honestly. Thanks BookSirens!

Ok. When I saw this one I immediately got it. This one is about Horse Shifters that are Native American. Horses are beautiful creatures. And I always love reading about Native Americans. And truly what can be more sexy than a story about Horse Shifters?

Well that is what I thought. While this book could have held so much potential, for me it completely fell short. The characters were great. Nokoni and Hah-Tee are strapped specimens of men and horse, it does not matter what shape they are in. And Terena is a strong, smart Native woman.

Where the story had potential it just never followed threw. It had sex scenes but for me they were so long and drawn out that it left me a lil bored and just praying it would end.

But that is just my opinion. The basis though, of Native American as the background of this story and Native American horse shifters was a great idea. I just was just wishing for more.

This is an interesting book definitely has an original twist on a shifter story that I haven’t experienced before. A heads up that this is quite fast paced and there is sex so if you aren’t into that so this is not for you but otherwise then you might want to give it a try. It has a good idea for a storyline however at times I can be a bit confusing so you have to continue on and make sure to finish the entire story to be able to u see stand what’s happening and why. If you don’t then you will not understand anything about the book and will be lost because the explanations don’t come till towards the end of the novel. I recommend to anyone looking for a mysterious read and quick paced heated love story. Concentrating more on the heated lovers than maybe the mystery at times.

I received a free ARC of this book and voluntarily wrote this review.

This book was a first in two categories for me. I've never read a shifter romance story focusing on horse shifters and this is also the first book I've encountered dealing with Native American themes and heritage. I really enjoyed this story and the fact that I liked and appreciated all the characters. I am especially drawn to reads that explore dominance and submissiveness in their erotic scenes and this story definitely contained a little of that. There were so many steamy scenes as well . I would definitely recommend this story to readers looking for a new erotic paranormal romance. I received a free review copy of this story and am leaving a voluntary honest review.

Horse shifters are a first for me. Based more on Native American beliefs and heritage, this book is a unique erotica novel unlike any I have ever seen. It has a lot of hot sex scenes and a good story line. Personally I think some of the scenes were way to long and the alphas should have been more alpha because in the beginning I though they weren’t very manly. I am glad they ask for permission but the constant got a little repetitive. Over all though a fun read that will get you all hot and bothered.

Woah this was hot, two shifters finding out how they come about with the one woman who brings them together.

The way it brings the native American culture into it is great, it give it a past.

Terena keeps thinking about her past, these two men keep bringing her around to her future.

This is the first horse shifter book I have read and I must admit I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I have not long ago discovered this author and so far have enjoyed everything they have written that I have read.

Looking forward to the next one.

Studs (Shifters Ménage) by Vonna Harper is a fantastically amazing story that I have had the privilege to read and give an honest review. I loved reading this story cause I love shifters but there are not many stallion shifters out there that I have read about. I loved this story and I will continue to read stories from this author cause I loved this story. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about stallion shifters and paranormal romance.

Studs is a unique book about horse shifters. Set in Native American lands, it incorporates the spirituality and mystery one might associate with Native American lore. The attraction between Terena and both Nokoni and Hah-tee seems supernatural and results in highly erotic scenes. The mystery and suspense made the book quite compelling. The characters were well developed and deep. I would have liked a bit more to the ending, but overall, it is a great book.

I enjoyed this book . Vonna was very good at making me feel like I was there. I am just not sure about horse shifters. This is the first one I have read with horse shifters and I guess like my very first shifter book, it is taking some getting comfortable with the idea. Vonna does paint a very vivid picture, I could see every powerful muscle in their shifter form! I did find it very long and wordy at the beginning. But was very happy to see they got their HEA.

So the idea of this story and how the shifters came to be was interesting, but the sex was just ok and confusing at times. This book does fall into the taboo category as you need to have an open mind about a lot of aspects of this book and if you think about it too hard some things can be on the squick side.

The blurb of this book grabbed my attention and I decided to give it a chance. The author wrote a very interesting story. One that I sometimes had a hard time following but I persevered. Glad I did. What a great read. I thought it was a typical shifter read, which by the way I really enjoy, but I was pleasantly surprised. The spiritual mystery of the Native American’s and awakening of Nokoni and Hah-Tee is so heartfelt. Another great read from Vonna Harper.

This is my first horse shifter book. A twist on a menage.
