Before Nicholas Flamel became the most famous alchemist who ever lived, he was merely a mortal—until the day a mysterious hook-handed man sold him a book and changed his life, and the world, forever.

Now, that lost story is told. . . .

The Codex helped Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel unlock the secrets of immortality. But first, it almost killed them. With this exclusive ebook, Michael Scott offers readers a never-before-seen short story from the world of the bestselling Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series: the tale of how the Flamels became to be Guardians of the Codex through Nicholas’s first encounter with Marethyu, the hook-handed man—and their subsequent battle with John Dee’s legendary predecessor, the devious Dr. Mirabilis: Sir Robert Bacon and his mechanical man.

I certainly never expected any more Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel stories, but I'm not complaining that this series of short stories came along. Nicholas Flamel and the Codex does a great job at regaling a key point in the series history. It doesn't drag things out too much and it keeps the events dynamic, particularly given that readers obviously know the ultimate outcome. I'm excited to see what other moments Scott explores in these short stories.

enjoyable journey to visit old friends

I enjoyed reading about Nicholas and Perenelle again and getting some of their backstory. It brought me right back to the adventures in all of the Alchemist books!

This is a very, very, VERY quick read. It’s literally just a short story documenting how Nicholas and Perenelle got the Codex in their possession. It only has three chapters so you will definitely finish reading it in one seating. It will not take an hour to finish the book.

I can’t really say anything about it. I mean it’s what it is: a short story. It did give a nice picture of how the Flamels got entangled in the entire mess. I love how the hook-handed man played such a role in this short. And I especially like the bit when Scatty showed up in the end. Everything was nicely connected. And of course, it wouldn’t be the same if I wasn’t compelled to do a bit of research on one of the characters, which I did.

So I can’t give it a five stars and it’s not deserving of a three. So I’ll go with a safe choice and give it four. 😁

Roughly 3.5-4 star.

The story is decent and tells of how as can be assumed by the title, Nicholas gets the codex. The story unfolds differently though as it is stated in the book- with Marethyu coming when Perenelle is manning the bookshop as opposed in the original story when he came when she was out of the store.

Bacon, who is briefly mentioned in the main series also makes an appearance in the story. We also get to see Marethyu fight (after becoming Marethyu) for the first time in the series/universe.

It was a decently quick read and was roughly half action making it faster paced than others in the series.

It has been a long time since I have been in the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel world. I was so excited to see that a series of novellas set in that world.

This is about how the Flamels came into possession of the Codex. A fast read. I can wait to continue through the rest of the series. I hope they are all as good as this one.

I read this book as part of the PopSugar Reading Challenge 2021 - Your favorite prompt from a past POPSUGAR Reading Challenge. (2015 prompt - A book with nonhuman characters)

I’ve been thinking about this series a lot lately, so I was delighted to find these new short stories taking place in this world again.

I’ve always been curious about the night the Flamels received the Codex, especially after learning the identity of the hook handed man in the last book, and this story gave me everything I had hoped for.

I can’t wait to continue with the rest of these stories, and I have a feeling a reread of the original series is in my near future.

I loved the atmosphere of this book!!!Nicholas doesn't like the smell of peppermint!!! Lol. Marethyu was amazing as always, I would kill for him to have his own series!!! 🥰😉 I didn't suspect the suprise character at the end!!!

If you would like to read a series about angels and demons (well Seraphim and "Chimeras, actually") then I suggest: The Daughter of Smoke & Bone series.

Scatty

I could read these books forever. I love this introduction of Scathath. These short stories are wonderful but I do wish they were longer. There’s millennia of years to this story.

A prequel to "the Alchemist", the first book in the series Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. Explains how he acquires the Codex, and introduces characters from the series.
Really enjoyed the series and am anxious to read all the lost stories.
