Sucker for Love Mysteries #1

Acsquidentally in Love

Rate this book
Nothing brings two men—or one man and an ancient god—together like revenge.

Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers… not that he’s ever gotten a response.

Until now.

Azaethoth the Lesser might be the patron of thieves and tricksters, but he takes care of his followers. He’s come to earth to avenge the killing of one of his favorites, and maybe charm the pants off the cute detective Fate has placed in his path. If he has his way, they’ll do much more than bring a killer to justice. In fact, he’s sure he’s found the man he’ll spend his immortal life with.

Sloane’s resolve is crumbling under Azaethoth’s surprising sweetness, and the tentacles he sometimes glimpses escaping the god’s mortal form set his imagination alight. But their investigation gets stranger and deadlier with every turn. To survive, they’ll need a little faith… and a lot of mystical firepower.

Ugh, TENTACLES and still only two stars? I wanted this to be amazing SO BADLY.

I listened to Acsquidentally in Love in audio, and I was DOWN and all for it... at first. It was fun, silly, and sexy, but then things got really repetitive. I had issues.

Let's talk narration. I've gone from a John Solo hater to a lover to... something. I have met him in person, and I really like him, and I've 5-starred a bunch of his audiobooks, but this book wasn't him at his best. He gave it his all, but he sounded so goofy. I just struggled with it all. I couldn't even be bothered to finish the last 20%, and that says a LOT. I think mostly it was the writing and not the narration, but it was a struggle regardless.

I found the plot to be too sexual (weird for me to say, I know- I'm cringing) but not sexy at the same time. I ended up skimming a lot of the sex scenes. The plot was a mystery but just really convoluted, and a bit too repetitive. I was into it at first, but then it went on for too long and it got boring.

Unfortunately, a miss for me.

Tentacles! Tentacles! Tentacles!

Who's with me?

I know the tentacle lovers out there understand when the tentacles come a-callin' the lure is too great to resist. This was one of those times.

I'm glad I didn't too because this was cute and fluffy escapism with a healthy side of eroticism. There is a bit of mystery that drives the plot forward and makes for some hijinks and the occasional ghoul. Along the way Sloane and Loch become smitten with each other and Sloane discovers the joys of the tentacock.

Bottom line: it's a fun read. Sure, there's an abundance of exclaiming. Sure, there's some cheese especially from Loch. But it all adds to the charm of a tentacle romance based in some mythology that I'm *fairly certain* is a product of the author's mind, though admittedly I'm too lazy to actually look it up to be certain.

Who cares, though?

It was sexy, fun, lighthearted and a nice diversion so if any of the above appeals give it a try. You could discover you have a tentacle kink heretofore unknown to you.

Do it in the name of self-discovery!

This was just right for my first tentacle read (one of the few things I thought would never appeal to me). Fun, sweet, and sexy with a bit of action and feels. Thoth the lesser was too adorable for words for a god. It kept me reading and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I adored this book! Loch was such a great character. KL Hiers created such an interesting story with a new mythological pantheon which is super fascinating to me.

Sloane really needed Loch in his life because he was really just existing because he was trying to solve the murder of his parents. Although Loch was silly and embarrassing, he was also kind and endearing and made Sloane realize that life is important and he needed to start living and stop just existing. (Oh, and we mustn't forget about the tentacles! I think I discovered a new kink. 🐙)

The secondary characters were a lot of fun as well and I am excited for this series to continue.

** 2.5 stars **

There were a couple of scenes that were funny and cute plus I liked Sloane. The steamy part was ok but it overshadowed the story. I disliked Loch because he was pushy and too obnoxious. The insta love plus magic fixing everything trope is ever present and too over used. And there is not enough suspense or even plot for that matter to keep me interested. I do not know if I will continue with the series. The second book's plot sounds kind of silly to me but it's in KU so maybe.

This is a tentacles romance, but not just a tentacles romance. I actually find the world building and the story arc surrounding the murder of Sloane's parent and their friend, Lochlain enjoyable. There are some surprises along the way that kept me engaged till the end.
There are magic and Gods and murder mystery. Loch aka Azaethoth is such an incorrigible God. Well, he is known as God of Thieves / Mischief, think something like Loki. He is such a nuisance and troublemaker. It was hilarious to read about his shenanigans.
The romance part was a bit insta-love. When Loch seek out Sloane from day one to help with a murder, he was instantly smitten with the private investigator and wanted to get in his pants. Poor Sloane can't wrap his head around what had happened to his boring and mundane life. But the horny God is quite persuasive and Sloane reluctantly succumb to Loch's seduction. On day two, Loch decided Sloane is going to be his mate. Like woah! I wish I know the reason Loch choose Sloane. As the story develop, I really ship them together and I love the way Sloane chastised him like an unruly child. Their sex was hot and out of this world, I mean there are tentacles and a tentacock. Nothing beats that.
In the end, the mystery was solves, baddies are done away, everyone got their HEA including the secondary characters. Overall, it was a fun ride.
There will be another book for Sloane and Loch next month. I can't wait to see what mischief that Loch will come up with and for Sloane to meet his Godly in laws.

I always knew I liked tentacle porn, I am not going to lie, but being able to take a potentially niche kink of tentacle-focused eroticism and romance and mix it with a hilarious and quite sweet love story between an ancient god and a magic detective is something I never knew I needed until I had finished reading and was already begging for more of this universe and especially this amazing pair. This has some of the most toe-curling sex but is also just an amazingly fun ride with fantastic action, unique storytelling, and is full of things I’m sure Lovecraft would HATE – so extra points for that!

Murder, mystery, magic, AND tentacles 🤭
I can't believe I haven't seen this series before today. I loved it! It was fast-paced and held my interest. Their bickering made me giggle. Dreamy romance. OMG, and that delicious DP tentacock scene 🥵 sheww wee. Perfect ending to 2024.

"Every thrust brought the tentacle deeper within Sloane’s body, the sensations taking away his breath and leaving him crying in broken sobs. It was spectacular, an ecstasy beyond any mortal capability, and Sloane was lost to it completely."

2 stars... barely.

1 star less because it was insta-lust and insta-love.

1 star less because while the main characters sometimes said a few funny things, most were cringe, repetitive and childish. The God, Loch stuck his tongue out to people like he was a child and behaved like an actual teenager. If you closed your eyes, the God was a teenager. Also, the author apparently watched Gordon Ramsey’s show once and the only thing they got out of it was “Idiot Sandwich” because they kept making Sloan and, the actual freaking God, Loch say it. Sometimes during the most inconvenient and serious moments completely destroying whatever scene it was.

“Sloane charged right at Tollmathan, screaming at the top of his lungs, “I am Sloane Daniel Beaumont! Son of Pandora and Daniel Beaumont! Born of Archersville! And I am going to fucking kill you, you fucking idiot sandwich!” <----- That was an actual quote in the actual book that an actual character said.... actually.

Sloane said “fuck” and/or “fucking” every 2 seconds.

1 star less because at around 70-75% I lost all interest and started skimming through the chapters.
The sex scenes were boring and, again, repetitive. Not even the (boring) tentacles saved it.

The “climax” of the story was lame as well.

God, this book was basic as hell.

I don’t know were Lochlain and Robert’s love came from that, suddenly, 2 months later they were married???

Kunst entire thing was stupid.

Why is Sloane so overpowered? That is never explained. He was able to kill a God...what...? How. Why.

Audiobook Review

Having read this in ebook form, I knew I would like it, but I didn't realize how much more I would enjoy the audio

Slight spoilers ahead

So in here we have Sloan, a poor lonely fella who is trying to find out who killed his parents. In this world, you worship these beings as gods and his parents worshipped Azaethoth the lesser and Sloan was pissed that this god did nothing to help his parents.

Anyways, Sloan goes to a party and meets a man who is later murdered. Azaethoth takes over the body and hires Sloan. Things happen and we find out that these two are mates.

There is a lot of tentacle sex and it's done well. I loved the knot the most.

John Solo did a great job here, I'm glad the sex scenes were acted out, I find that's better than a dry reading.

____________________________

Oh my...

I love tentacles and I'm not ashamed. This was instalove plus gods, magic, murder, sex, and bringing back the dead.

I liked all the characters in this one and I liked the otherworldly story.

You will need to just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

This was so horny! A romp. There's a tentacled god MC absolutely obsessed and horny with the other MC, there's a mystery afoot to try and find out who murdered the MC's family, there's some monster fucking, lots of tentacle fucking, and overall, this was a fun time.

I will say, John Solo went all in with narrating this, and there's a lot of acted out explicit sex scenes that were a, lot? To listen to, lol. Probably a 4 star book and 2.5 star narration for me. Just rating for the book contents!

¼ paranormal mystery, ¾ sexy tentacle fun.

Well this was a hoot! It's not a very serious book, and I wasn't expecting it to be. The plot moves along quickly, and so does the relationship, which is fine by me because that means there's more room for tentacle sex.

And tentacle sex, there is. There's a marathon sex scene (I believe it's nearly 2 whole 30-minute audio chapters), and a number of other cheeky moments. Loch (Azaethoth) really just can't keep it in his pants.

I generally like John Solo as a narrator but this wasn't my favourite of his. I found that Sloane really sounded like Liam from Lyn Gala's Claimings, and he was a bit too whiny for my liking. Wow, John Solo also gets really into the sex scenes. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but...yeah, wow. If I could never hear the word "tentacock" again though, that would be great.

Well that was my first tentacle book....strangely I don't believe it's going to be my last.

This was a fun, fast paced read, with a plethora of Tentacles being used in a variety of ways. I'll let you use your imagination until you read this book because I seriously had no idea what I was in for until I read this book and that worked well for me. There is a lot going on plot wise, but it was easy to follow. I really enjoyed the budding relationship between Sloan and Loch. It was just so different, yet it still contained the same passion as more traditional love stories. The relationship progressed at lightning speed, but it worked in this paranormal setting. This series is just hilarious and I hope to see more of Loch and Sloan in the future.

I had previously had two DNFs from KL Heirs and this was going to be my third and last attempt….

Who knew that all it took was a puny title, tentacles and a god who with both remind you to wear a seat belt and threaten to disembowel your foe to please me? This was really enjoyable and I plan on reading the whole series

You wanna know what else is great about this book? The last chapter is 3 months later and there is no epilogue. Epilogue, schmepilogue!

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

This fluffy, sunshiny book filled with cults and ritual sacrifice is the first in the 10 volume Sucker for Love Mystery series, and it’s a delight. It’s so much sugary candy, tentacle-tastic sex scenes, and gooey declarations of love that all of the other stuff (the cults, dead bodies, and the end of the world nonsense) barely makes a blip. Really, the murders are more like … sprinkles on a sundae — and I know how that sounds, but it’s true. This is a book that relishes in humor and happiness, love and fun. There’s no gore, just giggles. And it’s so much fun.

I have been a fan of K.L. Hiers for a long time, and this book shows why. The writing is slick, clean, and effortless. The pace is bright and fast, with no lulls or rushed moments. The characters are three dimensional and work well together.

Read Elizabeth’s review in its entirety here.

OHMYGOD! This book is perfection! I loved every page of it and ejnoyed the hell out of it! It has everything I love - great world building, ancient gods, little mistery, awesome characters, cute romance, HOT erotica ...and TENTACLES. Do you still have questions why to read it?!

Loch was a really, really good character, I loved him. And Sloane, aww he was adorable, and I loved how Sloane and Loch got together. But my favorite was the Idiot sandwich reference! I laughed so hard! Loch is just too much for words♥

Really loved reading this book, it held my interest. I couldn't and wouldn't put it down, read it in one go. And the ending, ohmy! It was full with tension and LOVED it so much.
It was really a good story with well written scenes and characters, and with amazing emotions.

Highly recommend it!

I wanted to like ACSQUIDENTALLY IN LOVE so much but I found Azaethoth more annoying than charming and he crossed some serious inappropriate boundaries with Sloane and it just didn't endear him to me.

Loch gently placed a supportive hand on Sloane’s shoulder, his fingers glittering with diamond and emerald rings.
“Put those back,” Sloane grumbled under his breath.
“You’re no fun,” Loch complained.

🔹Story- 4.8⭐, Characters- 5⭐, Sex- 5⭐, Epilogue- n/a HFN⭐

Dear reader, have you ever found a book that hits everything you ever imagined you'd read in a book? Like some hyper specific fantasy you thought of, in your head and suddenly it exists in a book? Cringey opening lines aside, this is the 3rd book where that’s happened to me and this one is scarily specific. But beyond that, it’s the philosophical musings that i liked the most. It’s soft and tender and yet i had to stop reading multiple times just to cry.

This book took me on a journey into one side of my heritage. i’m pretty sure this is about the old Gaelic Gods with Dhankes = Sanheim, but it immediately made me think of my own Gods. One side of my heritage still has active ancient Gods to this day and actively worships them. The other side? The Egyptian Gods are mostly myths now unfortunately. Reading this made me think, does a forgotten God dream of being remembered? Does it matter if i still believe in him?

Things this had which i was looking for:

👉A God pursuing a human mate who resists at first isn’t new, but the execution is. It’s implied this bond was preordained, since Sloane was “special” and Loch always knew his mate would be so. That’s why he never chose one in all his vast existence. His followers assigned him companions, but he never chose. Nor had one himself.

👉God meets the human in his element (here Sloan as a detective doing his job) and helps with his job.
👉God takes a mortal/human form. Here he inhabits Lochlaine’s dead body. There’s also a soul redemption theme!!

👉A sort of isekai in it too! Sloane is taken to the celestial city in space for their 1st time.
👉A very special first time that takes place in the God’s realm.

👉Wait! Wait! This even has the mortal ascending?! Holy shiii! Like he won’t die but when the time comes he will ascend to Zebulon. And Loch even says the exact words "reborn as a God by my side.” Maybe will happen in the future!!
👉This will have mpreg in the future too! OMGGGGG 😭

🔹i love the allegory between the story's religious views and our real world issues. How modern religions desecrated the old or ancient religions and how ancient Gods no longer exist becuz they went to sleep 1000s of years ago as people stopped believing in them (some more than others).
When his parents had been murdered, he’d only found silence from the other side. He’d even tried praying to the Lucian god out of desperation and pain, only to be met with the same result. For a very long time, he’d considered himself sort of a hopeful atheist.

Man, and this shows the desperation and betrayal one feels when in answer to their prayers all they hear is silence. Definitely another thing i could attest to.

🔹There's a beautiful and heartbreaking allegory of the fate of the ancient religions, particularly to me, the ancient Egyptian religion.
“Why are you awake? All the gods went to sleep, right? Turned your backs on humanity and then decided to take a fucking nap?”
“Humanity turned their backs on us first,” Loch fired back passionately. “They all groveled to their precious Lord of Light and forgot about us!..”

“Why not?”
“Because you’ve all been asleep for thousands of years, and no one believes you’re real anymore,” Sloane replied flatly as he continued to peck away at his phone.

🔹Loved Zebulon. Just like Amduaat, it’s a crossway point. Just like how an immortal can visit Amduaat at any time. You can be in the fields, visit dead relatives but also be free to leave at any time. You can meet the Gods even. The concept remains the same:
“Sleeping,” Loch replied gently. “Think of this place… as sort of a waiting area. The gods and all the other souls sleep deeper within the city, in chambers you cannot reach as a mere mortal. At least, not one that’s alive.

“Within the dreaming, the possibilities are endless. We can visit your parents, whatever you’d like. But there is no hurry. We can leave whenever you want. We have all the time in the world.”

Philosophy aside, this book is just a delight!

🔹idk why.. well ig i do since i went in blind but i liked human Lochlaine so much that i first thought he was the God incarnate. But then the God refers to him in past tense and it hit me. Lochlaine was dead. Azaethoth was using his body and calling himself “Loch”. Lochlaine and Loch are not the same person even if they shared a body briefly, and that distinction matters later esp with the OM drama. The book is very clear about this, and i appreciated that:
“Still your mate, no matter what vessel I’m in,” Loch said firmly. “If Lynnette wants me to return Lochlain’s body, I will. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be together. Perhaps the package will change, but I am yours. Always.”

🔹These two were so cute together. Love how sincere Loch was for Sloane. And their banter was funny mixed with utter sincerity. We got hints along the way how special Sloane was and thereby him being Azatoth's mate. The dramatic irony made it more enjoyable to me.
Loch approached Sloane but didn’t make any move to touch him. He seemed to be waiting for permission, watching Sloane cautiously.
Sloane reached for his hand, his heart stirring at the way Loch’s face lit up from the simple affection.

You ever seen a puppy dog MC? Well, here he is. And he's a God too! i can just picture the tail wagging! xD

🔹i think Sloane may be demi given he was adamant he didn’t want to do anything unless he’s in a relationship with someone. So, i’m here supporting my demi boy.

🔹Milo was a good friend too. Despite being of a different religion he put that aside to understand Sloan and help him. i respect him for that. Loved Lynette (Lochlaine’s sister) and even Fred.

🔹The dialogues did feel funny at times, esp the post nut clarity ones. It was silly and awkward. And the book is self aware. It knows when to be serious and when not to. For eg- Milo reacting more strongly to a man in a robe being real than to an actual living God was hilarious. And it tracks, becuz as a Lucian he only believed in his Gods. So watching his reaction and subsequent conversion was hilarious LMAO.

🔹The climax was ott and cinematic. Definitely felt like i was watching a movie. And.. it went the Severus route as well as the Goblet of Fire route. That’s all i’m gonna say about it.

🔹Then i liked the real Lochlaine and Robert too. As long as Sloan and “Lochthoth” were together. :) And im so glad that even if it was someone else's wedding, the focus was mainly on our couple and not this side couple as some books tend to do.

🔹There are 3 sex scenes and 2 sex acts all of which were hot. @50% awesome tentacle sex! i mean cosmic sex. Slaone's a loud boy. But it's more the fact that there was description, feelings and reactions all there in perfect balance thereby making their presence felt. And you know that means it was written well. Everything was very hot, they felt very responsive. Look at me writing poetry on this.

These issues can’t really be talked about without a spoiler. So, if you don’t want to be spoiled, then please don’t click on them.

♦There is separation for 1 night.

OM drama: Lochlaine had a fence, Robert, who loved him. Azaethoth-as-Loch had no memory or desire for him, and the real Lochlaine was unaware of Robert’s feelings or he wouldn’t have approached Sloane. Sloane was surprisingly sympathetic about it.

♦️One thing i didn't like was that everyone was saying "uhm" and i mean everyone. While i like this literal representation of "..." i felt like it was used a bit too much.

📘Tropes & tags: •Human x God (in a human’s body), •necromancy, •age gap (1000s of years), •paranormal, •fated mates, •mystery, •strict roles, •bathe together, •orphan MC, •MC almost killed, •care taking, •golden retriever, •make him food, •touch starved, •touch him & die, •possessive, •funny, •mid angst, •hurt comfort, •nuzzling, •courting, •fated mates, •tall MCs, •no cheating, •some OM drama, •3rd person single pov, •no epilogue, •HFN→ possible HEA.

Sex Acts: •strict roles Loch/t Sloane/b, •“tentajob” 💀, •tentacle sex, •DAP, •“it won’t fit”, •scratching, •moaning, •multiple orgasms, •begging (in sex), •crying (in sex).

You know, I never thought when I decided to read my first story involving tentacles that it would be simultaneously funny, silly, hella sexy, completely erotic…and oh yes, that it would make me cry. All with a solid plot, characters you can’t help but like, and a bit of suspense to boot. Nope, did not see that coming at all. And you know what? I LOVED IT.

My sympathy for Sloane with the death of his parents that was still unsolved was overflowing. He’d been so determined to find out who killed them to his own career’s detriment, and of course that had me wanting vindication and resolution for him. When Azaethoth (a.k.a Loch) comes along, he injects purpose—along with some disbelief, silliness, and charm—into Sloane’ life. He’s incorrigible, and he’s also out to ensure the person who killed one of his devout followers is bought to justice. An interesting combination to be sure, and one that had me laughing and wanting justice as well in equal parts.

And then there’s those tentacles. I mean, dang…when I thought “tentacles”, my mind conjured up scenes that bordered on ridiculous, maybe even creeping into the realm of absurd. I never expected a level of eroticism that had me checking my battery stash was stocked up. Sloane and Loch’s intimate scenes were scorching, full stop.

To make this all even better? There’s a solid storyline here with well thought out twists, and it got me invested deeply enough in Sloane and Loch’s budding relationship that the intense emotional buildup snuck up on me. The very short time frame in which the story unfolds could scream insta-love, but it honestly didn’t feel like that at all to me; their feelings seemed genuine—so much so that as the climactic confrontation of the story resulted in me actually getting teary-eyed.

The lesson here? Don’t try something new with preconceived notions of what you’re going to get. Tentacles doesn’t automatically translate to some wacky sci-fi nonsensical pulp fiction with gratuitous porn of an alien nature. Acsquidentally in Love actually delivers a great paranormal romance with a well thought out magical world, and a main couple you can’t help but love. 5 stars, and since this is billed as the first in a series I can’t wait for more! This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and unique erotic sexual content ;-)

"Mmm, two thumbs way up"

This was a little of everything!
I caught myself multiple times physically responding to the characters - shaking my head, arching my brows, laughing, even shed a tear or two
The author wove such an enchanting tale for the reader blending fantasy, humor (lots of humor) mystery, and suspense into a heartwarming and enchanting romance that left you with all the feels

"Remember murder to be solved, world to be saved, intestines that need to be festively braided?"

Loch was ...
A refreshing gust of wind on a warm spring day.
That passenger that constantly asked, "are we there yet?"
That friend who is overly tactile - you know the one who has to touch everything?
At the same time, he was comfort and safety amidst the storm

Sloane was our driver for this journey, our moral GPS if you will, keeping our trickster under control (well the best we can expect) while rediscovering his self

Looking for light-hearted fun?
Laughter? 😂
Tentacles? 🦑 lots of lovely tentacles
A bit of mystery and suspense? 🕵️
Celestial beings that are a bit on the immature side? 🌌
A romance that will last that test of time? 💞
Then buckle up butter cup because your carriage has arrived! 🎢

“Zunnerath is my great-grandfather, and he married a mortal woman—”

“Didn’t she murder Zunnerath’s first mate out of jealousy?”

“Yes, it’s quite romantic,” Loch replied with a warm smile.

I saw a review saying this was mostly tentacle smut and that would’ve been fine by me lol but it isn’t! It starts with Sloane being asked to investigate a murder… by the guy who was murdered himself! Only it’s just his body and inside is a god determined to get revenge on whoever killed his favourite follower.

It’s silly and fun. Like an episode of Psych in terms of wackiness and jokes. Yes, there’s tentacle smut but not an outrageous amount imo. It’s a lighthearted romance and was exactly what I was hoping for 🥰 I’ll definitely be reading book 2 soon!

Meh. Both MCs were pretty annoying. Mood and motivation swung in an instant from one extreme to another, including from “we must solve the murder!!!!!” to “ooh, let’s have sex right now, never mind if people are in danger.” The least annoying characters were the ones with the least amount of character development. Oh well. I forced myself to finish reading, but probably should have just re-read Megan Derr’s Wriggle and Sparkle.
