The Fire Drill
Ivy Watts has it all. She’s drop-dead gorgeous, a smart (albeit rookie) patent attorney, and has the best friend-slash-roommate that a girl could ever ask for. But what most strangers couldn’t know about Ivy is that she loves Italian wine, high heels, and works as a high-end escort three nights a week. Read escort, not prostitute. There’s a literal legal difference- at least in Ivy’s mind.
When Ivy is roped into a job on her only night off in months, she is not impressed. She’s pissed. Worse, her new client’s only stipulation is that his date is ‘educated’. Yeah, with three advanced degrees and a mountain of debt to prove each one of them, she definitely fits the bill. Given his request for a smart, mute blonde, Ivy is not surprised to find that her new client is an investment banker with eyes that could freeze hell over, a body shaped by the devil himself, and an attitude to match.
David Van den Berg is cold, rude, and clearly doesn’t give a damn if she has a brain as long as she acts the part. But when Ivy hits it off with David’s boss at the party that she is paid to attend, she begrudgingly agrees to play the role of fake date for a while longer. After all, the last thing that she is expecting is for David to actually have a soul, let alone a soft side. A soft side that leaves her completely out of her depth and itching to tease more of it out of him.
As broody dislike rapidly transforms into resigned attraction, Ivy and David are both thrown off-kilter by the undeniable fact that they’re impossibly compatible. Ivy is kind, fun, and nonjudgmental. David is cold, brash, maybe even a little emotionally stunted. They’re perfect for each other.
But with Ivy’s background as an escort looming over their relationship, will their blossoming love even stand a chance? Of those who know about Ivy’s past, who of them will accept it as a 21st-century woman’s right to do as she pleases with her body? And who will use it to plot against her? So, we have our heroine, Ivy, who's a patent attorney by day and an escort by night and our endearing but cold hero, David, who hires her for a work thingy. The first sentence from David is an insult and thereafter the night goes from bad to worse.
Obviously, Shepherd intuited all my romance genre pet peeves and worked hard to mitigate them because I found everything about this book appealing and exciting.

I don't know... The whole premise of the story is just unrealistic.
Would a young, educated, stunning and successful woman, an attorney no less, risk her whole career by working as an escort on weekends?Yes, I know she has financial troubles but that's beside the point. Wouldn't she be afraid she might stumble upon some of her future legal clients when summoned by her escort agency?
And would an intelligent, educated and successful woman believe that as long as she has sex only with the clients she is attracted to, it is not called prostitution?
And just to be clear, I am NOT judging her. I'm just saying it seems implausible.
Would a hot, rich and successful investment banker, no matter how introverted and busy he is, really have sexual relationships exclusively with escorts because he works a lot and doesn't have time?
Would he really risk ruining his whole career by being seen with escorts while pretending they are his girlfriends in front of his business associates because he works a lot and doesn't have time?
Other than that? This book is decent. Both of the main characters are okay. The writing is fine, the characterization is well-done. Despite the recycled storyline, the book doesn't feel recycled. And yet, the implausibility of the story ruins it all.

The Fire Drill is the debut novel of new romance author Tess Shepherd. This may be her first novel but it sure doesn't feel like one with its well-developed storyline and characters.
Ivy is a patent lawyer by day and a high-end escort on the weekends who only sleeps with a client if she feels a connection and likes him. She works so hard in order to pay off her student debts and to pay for her father's medical expenses. David is a busy businessman who doesn't have time to date so uses the high-end escort service for work functions. Ivy is not what he expected and after having a rough day he doesn't make the best first impression. But when their one night turns into another to help David's career they are forced to really get to know each other to make their relationship look believable. The fake relationship swiftly turns into real feelings but will David be able to handle her escort occupation or will it destroy them from having a chance at a future together.
"the feeling of her nestled in his arms felt right somehow, like they'd been molded with the expectation that they'd find each other."
Tess Shepherd has delivered a lovely story with wonderful characters. David is at first glance grumpy and arrogant but you quickly see that there's much more to him. He's still grumpy lol but he wasn't raised in an overly loving home he isn't prepared to handle his feelings for Ivy. Ivy is a strong character whose independent, unashamed and in touch with her feelings. She's not defined by her jobs but by her fun, caring and warm personality. I adored them together especially when she was teasing him to get reactions.
"she couldn't help but sigh when his hot skin met hers, couldn't stop the purr from rising in the back of her throat when one big, rough palm stroked down her body."
The story switched mainly between Ivy and David's point of views which I loved because I always feel a story benefits / improves when we are given both. This went a step further and now and then we are given someone else's point of view of Ivy and Davids relationship. Her best friend, his dad, his mother and his grandmother. At first, it reinforces their relationship as genuine and it was sweet that their love sort of created a ripple effect improving his parents relationship for the better. However, towards the end it seemed to branch off a bit too far and there were POVs from his parents and grandmother that were unnecessary to Ivy and David's storyline.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Tess Shepherd's debut novel The Fire Drill and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for all her future releases.

The book has a third person narrative, allowing insight to multiple characters, not just the main two. This is an unusual choice for a romance book, which tends to either alternate perspective or just be from one. It allowed real time reactions to events. I enjoyed it and was different for me to read. It didn’t feel biased to any perspective either, the omniscient narration allowed for the feelings of both characters to be explored in equal depth. What I really commend about this choice, is that it also allowed exploration of other characters without it feeling random or added for the sake of it, such as David’s parents, his Gran and Gordon. This not only developed his character but also added substance to David and understand him more.
There are unpredictable moments, which makes it a refreshing read and leaves the reader intrigued. The conversations are realistic. Ivy and David’s relationship grew quickly. Ivy’s independent and reserved mindset over David changed just as quickly as his of her. They both mutually didn’t spark a good acquaintance, however, it did very quickly progress, which may feel a little sudden. But, as chapter 5 outlines (which, deserves kudos for advocating safe sex), the pair have undeniable passion. It shows how difficult and complex feelings are. Not to mention how difficult it can be for an author to write.
This is supported by the characters’ inner conflict, especially David’s which was highlighted in the post coital chapter. However, the character developments happen at a steady pace and doesn’t neglect their original traits. David tries to be there for Ivy and I liked how it didn’t come easy to him, showing his strong character but then he is the one pursuing the relationship the most. I didn’t expect the story to take this route and it made a difference to some cliché romance stories of the girl falling in the love with the boy and doing all she can to keep him. This was the other way round in a sense. David fell in love with Ivy and was infatuated, progressing their relationship to new levels at a quicker pace than what Ivy would have thought. Although she isn’t against his ideas, she does remain skeptic and in disbelief. Despite the challenges of people knowing Ivy’s past, David still loves her.
Damien might have to be my favourite character. I love the best friend relationship he has with Ivy and also his relationship with Louie. The moment he first meets Ivy shows how genuine they are. Everyone should have a friend like Damien, life would be perfect.
Overall, it is a pleasant, well written read. I give it 5/5 stars and a high recommendation to all lovers of romance out there! It was an exciting read and not to mention the tease in the epilogue! I hope we will be having a sequel soon.

Great debut novel!
I really enjoyed this story. Ivy and David sure got off to a rocky start! But I loved how she was able to smash his preconceived notions right away and be such a valuable partner to him.
I loved that once they got together they were able to fight their battles together and that Ivy forced David to share his feelings with her.
The conflict was inevitable, but well handled. And I enjoyed all the side characters as well.
All in all, a great story.

This book definitely did not feel like a debut novel. Tess definitely has a way of words and her storytelling is incredible. She took a lot of time to develop all the characters.

Tess Shepherd's debut romance novel is undeniably sexy, sassy, and pure fast-paced-fun. Ivy and David each stand on their own as strong, smart, passionate characters, and Shepherd weaves more than just slight eroticism in and out of the chapters leaving the reader a bit breathless. Ivy is very much a modern 21st century young woman who's not afraid of her sexuality, David a hard-working dedicated career man, and along the way we are introduced to various family members and friends who add so much spice to the story! Shepherd has accomplished a sophisticated romance that takes the reader along for a glorious, delightful ride, where love really does conquer all!

Absolutely loved this book - I have not managed to finish a single novel since my little one came along but could not put this one down! In addition to the main characters' love story, I loved seeing the beautiful other narratives of family members woven in. Certainly made me reflect on my own relationships in a very healthy way! Thank you Tess Shepherd, can't wait for the next one!

I started reading this book on a sunny Sunday morning and good thing I did because I literally couldnt put it down and finished it that night at 11pm!
My favourite kind of book, easy to read and heartwarming, filled with so many loveable charaters.
I loved how it covered so many different types of relationships and generations.
Really beautifully written & cant wait to start on her next one, Public Trust! ;)

Easily one of my new favorite romance novels! I was hooked from the first sentence. The story of Ivy and David’s relationship was both enjoyable to read but also a little anxiety inducing cuz I mean how would you think people would react to her job as an escort and he having met her cuz he hired her?! Nevertheless, I loved this book. I enjoyed every minute of it!

Loved it! I was a huge fan of Tess’ writing style, the way she uses third person so we can see a glimpse into every character’s mind, and she can write one hell of a romance scene!
It’s hard to believe that this is her debut novel because it truly is fantastic. I can’t wait for her next book, Public Trust, coming out Fall 2020!

What an utterly wonderful escape this book was, exactly what I love about romance novels. Disappearing into this story and getting lost in its twists and turns this book has to offer, was most enjoyable. The characters are great, I lived them both from the beginning and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. Cannot wait for the next Tess shepard to come out!

I loved it. I am amazed and in disbelief that this is a debut novel. I’ve read many debuts for authors that have reached out and more often than not I don’t enjoy them. That was not the case with The Fire Drill!
I’ve come to realize that I enjoy romances that have more mature, professional main characters. I absolutely loved how developed and mature Ivy and David were. Their confidence throughout made you really cheer for them when they had a momentary lapse in that confidence.
Bravo, Tess. I can’t wait to see what’s to come from you in the future!

I don’t often read a debut novel that leaves me wishing I could get my hands on more books by the same writer. The Fire Drill is a true page turner! Shepherd immediately draws you into the lives of her characters via their profoundly relatable and often humorous inner monologues. It takes a gifted writer to hook readers and thoroughly engage them with the story. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Absolutely binge worthy!! Could not put this book down. It’s a really easy read and the way it’s written makes you feel all the emotions, you cry and laugh along with the book. I would 100% recommended this book!!

I highly recommend this book! I won this book in a giveaway from the author, and I am so glad I read this!! I had low expectations starting this book and thought it would just be another romcom or a Pretty Woman 2.0. This book blew my expectations and had more depth than I anticipated! The characters were all well developed, and I really enjoyed how this was written and seeing viewpoints from all of the characters. This is definitely in my top 10 favorite books I have read this year (and I have read a lot of great books)!
This is the author's debut novel, and I already know she will be a must buy author in the future! I read and enjoyed this as much as a Colleen Hoover book! I am excited to read Tess's next book, Public Trust, out this December!

I have wanted to read more contemporary romance so I read The Fire Drill by Tess Shepherd. I loved the story. It was exactly what I wanted to read at the moment.
It is the story of Ivy and David. They start with a fake relationship but end up in love. Since Ivy was an escort, it might create complications in their relationship. How will they take their relationship forward?
I binge read this book. It had me laughing and crying at the same time. Ivy and David are so cute. David’s grandmother is so cool. I absolutely loved Ivy’s roommate and his boyfriend. They can never stay serious. They were very supportive and amazing.
The only problem was the point of view. It changes mid chapter which is confusing. There should have been only one person’s point of view per chapter.

Okay, I literally binged my way through the book because I was enjoying it that much. I literally couldn’t stop reading it - I was hooked from the beginning.
Ivy and David’s story is a beautiful journey - Ivy works as an escort to pay her fathers health bills and David, a workaholic, hires her for one of his work events... and sparks fly.
Strong emotions are often confused - and these two were obsessed with each other from the start regardless of their actions. I absolutely LOVED how their story came together - it’s fluffy, it’s cute and it’s oh so fun to read. And his grandma is hilarious.
I loved all the side characters who all had their individual stories to tell - but Ivy and David are the stars of this story and their love story is so entertaining. It’s the perfect summer read.

This was such a good debut. Ivy and David were likeable well-written characters and the book was easy to read. There were a few things that irritated me, for instance, I did not understand the emphasis on the robot-like behaviour of all the blonde women the hero had dated before. It seemed petty and unnecessary (but honestly I might be reaching). Despite having a few gripes, however, I enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I am a slow reader but WOW, I got absolutely hooked to this one. I read in every spare moment I had just find out where the story was going. The characters are described so vividly that you get an incredibly clear picture of the story and what they’re doing, their actions, facial expressions it’s incredible. The story had me captivated from page 1 right up until the very last word. Definitely worth the read👍🏼

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, could not put it down. Very easy to read and an ideal book to take on a beach holiday as well as to just read at home in the evening when you are relaxing with a glass of wine. A great chick lit book. Looking forward to reading more books by Tess Shepherd.

This book is a must read if you are a fan of romance. This book is written in third person which was perfect because it didn’t solely focus on the main characters, Ivy and David. You learn about their family and friends as which you don’t see in many books of this genre.
