In this heartwrenching new yuri manga, a teenage girl comes to terms with her own sexuality through her crush on her brother's wife.
MEMORIES
Now that Uta's moved out, Kaoru and Reiichi realize there are so many things yet unsaid in their home life. It leads Koaru to bring up something that's been on her mind, but the reaction she gets isn't what she expected. Then, a night out with her girlfriends gets Kaoru thinking about their school days, and the very chain of events that brought her and Reiichi together. Her past might be the prologue to the two's present, but what could it mean for their future?
Ugh...ya'll I really want to enjoy this series more than I am, but it's just not living up to my expectations in terms of execution. I definitely think that the flash back that we get in this specific volume is interesting because it explains more about the relationship that Kaoru has with her husband and another character; however, I'm not exactly sure how this is going to wrap up in the volume considering the ending. I'm still not even sure that I would consider this Yuri because of the nature of the relationship between our characters. I won't be rushing to get to volume 7, but I'm hoping that Uta gets some closure from all of this.
As with the last 2 reviews - I read vol 4-7 in one sitting so the division between the volumes is not super clear in my memory so bare with me if I mention something that pertains to a previous volume. This volume mostly focuses on Karou and her backstory which I thought was an interesting choice since up to now the story has mostly focused on Uta.
Now that Uta has left, Kaoru and her husband are back together and surely that will bring them closer again? Or maybe ripping off the bandaid will reveal that the wound hasn’t healed, only festered, and without Uta, Kaoru might have even less left than she thinks…
Phew, well, you’re not likely to see a more compelling portrait of loneliness and depression in a manga this year. Turns out that behind her clumsy, somewhat flighty nature, Kaoru is… a bit of a total mess. While she has never been the most compelling character, this volume does wonders in explaining why that is.
For all its narrative dramatics, there’s nothing more real than seeing Kaoru ask her husband about having children, less so because she wants one, but because she clearly thinks that this will fix everything in her life. Having seen that play out in real life, it struck home for me and the desperation, unspoken, is palpable.
Smartly, this volume has practically no Uta in it - she merely exists as a memory of better times and even then she feels practically ephemeral, like a ghost that haunts this very broken marriage.
If there is to be yuri, and there hasn’t exactly been a ton of evidence that Kaoru is gay, then singling out Uta as the one bright spot in Kaoru’s life and the person she relates to the strongest is pretty much the way forward with it. Once more I think the character study is so interesting that if yuri happens, great, but if not and the ending still works, good enough.
Uta’s role is emphasized by the flashbacks, where Kaoru’s sort of ‘because he’s there’ attraction to Reiichi, her husband-to-be, ends up being a very painful moment for her when her “best friend” ends up dating him. There is a lot of subtext here that said friend isn’t into Reiichi at all, but the reader can judge for themselves there.
Still, her actions are subtly destructive for poor Kaoru, who is being gaslit so freaking hard in the present day that it’s absolutely painful to watch. When I read Days of Love at Seagull Villa, another yuri story with a miserable friend, this sort of sneaking maliciousness is what I was after because it feels real. This is as believable as that other story was not.
Even the way Kaoru and Reiichi finally get together, after a tragedy has basically sapped the good from Kaoru’s life nigh permanently, feels like nothing more than pity on the part of the latter than any particular higher emotion.
My worry is that one final volume isn’t enough to clear this all up, although it is definitely bringing a lot home to roost. I wish the pacing of this series had been a bit more consistent because the last two instalments have been stuffed full of developments. Great twist of the title to be in reference to a different character this time out too.
5 stars - this is the book that I suspect will linger with me most out of this week’s releases. From a slow start have come two amazingly well-written volumes and I am dying to see whether this ends up going for it or not, in terms of that romance and where our characters end up.
Well well, to say that I am disappointed and pissed off is an understatement! You may see how much just from the highest scores I v given to this manga up until this issue. Now I m glad I wasnt among the readers who read it when it began and faithfully waited for the new issue throughout the years...
This could have been one of the vest written manga and love story ever... Yet for the author to chose to end it so abruptly after very nicely paonting the plot and characters and build up previously. It is a spit in the face of its readers! I don't like to jump to the conclusions, but I wonder if the author is someone cruel and laughing in the face of people who follow yuri genre... So hurtful and disappointing!
The pace slows down here so we can have a big Kaoru flashback, and I'm surprised to learn that this is the penultimate volume. The flashback story was great and gave us some more context for Risako, but I was hoping for a longer overall story, making the time here kinda feel wasted. That's not totally fair, and I'll have to reserve judgment for when I read the final volume. I still really enjoyed this, I just missed Uta and co.! I'd read much more of this series than just one more volume so what the heck??
This volume is 99.9% Kaoru backstory, but it does explain her essential character a great deal. She was a shrinking violet in high school, never worked up the guts to tell Rei her feelings. Former childhood best friends, literal "boy next door" type. Kaoru feels empty and depressed without Uta. She floats the idea of starting a family with Rei but he hesitates. Kaoru's senpai was Risaka and also a rival love interest for Rei (and perhaps those feelings still linger). Tragically, Kaoru lost her mother to an unspecified neurological condition right after High School and she took an office job to support herself. Deeply depressed and lonely, Rei came back into her life so she would not be alone. A loving act perhaps but questionable if it is enough to sustain a relationship long term. As Kaoru relives these saddest moments in the present she slips back into depression. Rei is away on a business trip and Kaoru doesn't want to be alone. She calls Uta but gives up after one ring. Uta notices and wants to write it off as a fluke but....then grabs her phone and dials Kaoru's number back....for our cliffhanger ending to this penultimate volume.
I enjoyed this volume and read it in one sitting, as I do with this series. It was good but not enough present day Uta, only child Uta in flashback. Kaoru's life has been one tragedy after another and her husband seems to have married her more out of pity than love, which is also sad. I am eager to see what Uta does next.

Geez... the audacity that girl has... steals her friend’s crush and then is sad when that friend wants to keep a distance between the two... really wanna slap her. Rei isn’t better though. After that, I really wonder, how in the possible Galaxis, these two ended up getting married. There's literally no love between them.
Ugh, too much hetero crap. Since volume 7 is the last one, I really HOPE, no, I’m BEGGING for them to divorce. Please, that’s all I was rooting for, since starting the series.
3.4/5. i cant believe this is the second to last manga in the series 3 Anyways i thought it was nice we got to see karou’s background in her school life. wish i got to see more of chloe tho (Chloe lover for life 🤞)
Kaoru's POV. Now that lil sis has moved out, it is expected that Kaoru looks into having kids with Reiichi, but she is still feeling insecure about her marriage. Was he cheating on her? Much of her part comes up and we end with Kaoru calling out for lil sis
