Cerberus #6

Ghost Nemesis

Rate this book
Never go scope-to-scope with a Silverguard sniper.

Nolan’s enemies had learned that lesson the hard way, and he had the kill count to prove it.

But when his old Warbeast Teammates drag him into a surgical strike on a former soldier-turned-gunrunner, he’ll find the true limits of his skills tested when facing off against a sharpshooter a match for his cunning, ruthlessness, and elite martial training.

Life and death hangs in a split-second decision, the tiniest twitch of a trigger finger.

If Nolan fails to be faster, better, and smarter, he might find himself locked in a battle he won’t walk away from.

I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist--words are my palette. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of fantasy heroes, villains, and everything in between. I'm also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy novels.

Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!

Another installment in the excellent Cerberus series by Andy Peloquin. The series follows ex-Silverguard Nathan Garrett, crippled during the war, who has since become an assassin for the Protectorate Bureau. They provide him the ability to walk again as well as the promise of the eventual release of his imprisoned brother. Unfortunately, Nathan's employers are kind of evil and he's too moral to be the assassin they want.

This book has him going to the funeral of his former commanding officer while a terrorist threat looms. It turns out that there's a conspiracy among his old war buddies to do some good before their group permanently breaks up. It ends up becoming an extended sniper duel and showing Garrett's new allegiances to the peope who despise his employers. Overall, I can't say this is my favorite of the books because I kind of support the Protectorate over the Silverguard. There's a lot of sneaky scumbags that need to be dealt with in a sneaky way, especially in this setting.

I also really would like to see Nathan get on treating his condition. There's no Jadis either and I was hoping she'd have an increased role in the books. Still, excellent action and well-done characterization.

Excellent book. Lots of action with great characters and an interesting story. Sci-fi but not too strange, more futuristic. Enjoyable

This is a story that dredges up the past, and pits Nolan against his nemesis.

We join Nolan Garret as he receives a card requesting his presence at the funeral of a man who used to be his team leader, from the time when he was
Nolan's superior officer; Master Sergeant Cedric Kane, was a man who shaped
Nolan Garret into the formidable and successful soldier he eventually became. Kane was a man for whom Nolan had huge respect and admiration. He felt the loss of the Master Sargeant keenly.

Arriving at the funeral, Nolan felt a profound shock go through him when he saw two of his old teammates at the grave side. As soon as the service was over, they both start tearing into him verbally; explaining to him that he had been a fool when he pulled away from them all, after he was injured and left unable to walk 5 years ago. After the tirade is over, Nolan does some super Grade A grovelling, and a bout of some much needed self reflection, they decide to bring him in on something hidden away from everyone.

Going along with the two old soldiers, he follows them to meet someone in secret. When they enter a secret room, Nolan gets the shock of his life when he discovers that his old Master Sargeant is very much alive and standing right in front of him. After Nolan gets past the utter shock and wonderful relief of 5he new situation, Kane tells Nolan that he has a serious problem which necessitated Kane faking his own death.

Nolan agrees to help Master Sargeant Kane to eliminate an evil man who once was a soldier, but sadly who'd gone rogue; gunrunning now, and causing the deaths of hundreds of innocents.

Nolan's skills as a long range sniper are what is needed to take out this evil gunrunning murderer.

The location of the HQ of the Ghostwalkers business is in a hugely inhospitable area on an icy planet. Nolan's skills are sorely tested in this very cold and intensely hostile environment.

Just to complicate matters, there is a sharp shooting sniper working for the gunnering boss, as his protection. Effectively she could take Nolan out of the picture.

This is a time of real pressure for Nolan. Can he beat someone who is practically as good as he is? In the rough weather conditions, and from a really long distance, Nolan believes he can cope but will he be in the sites of the other sniper as he goes after the mark?

I got shivers when I read about not only the bitter cold conditions, but also for Nolan, when I realise that the other sniper could end his life.

This is my favourite Cerberus book to date. The simplicity of the task, against the high level of risk to himself, which is a given and acceptable price to pay, and his team, which is also a given, however, is a less acceptable price to pay. Oh, the tension and the sphincter clenching feeling when push comes to shove - ooh, i like that! I think I'll just leave that bit in the review hahaha - was incredible.

I love these types of all or nothing stories. I mean they give me Bond movie vibes, if Bond was in a wheelchair, and couldn't walk unaided. I love how the authors mind works. It's like a video goes on inside my head and when I come to the action section I am involved in everything, as if I were alternatively; a fly on the wall for long range view, able to fly around all over the place, for better angles on the actio; or alternately, inside Nolan's head, looking out through his eyes as he fights hand to hand; or as he takes aim, using one of any number of versatile weapons, that Tiai can transform his hand held device into. Of course, Nolan would look darn heroic in the process! Naturally.

I am always swept away by the strength of this series, and book 6 was nothing less than what I have come to expect from Andy Peloquin's main character Nolan Garrett alias Cerberus. This time round Nolan flies off-world to attend Master Sergeant Kane's funeral, the man who had believed in him and turned him into the best Silverguard sniper that ever was. Nolan needed to be reminded by Bex what team was all about and forced almost, into facing his previous teammates who he had ghosted after his accident. His biggest regret in doing so was in the way he had in fact treated his Sergeant and he believed it was now too late to apologise but after he attends the funeral he gets the biggest surprise ever as he comes face to face with a very alive and kicking Sergeant Kane and gets roped in by his teammates to embark on one of his most daring challenges yet. He also has to open up to his friends about many things he had kept from them and which he was afraid to talk about only to find that it was his own demons which made him act the way he did, feeling less of a man, and not his friends reactions to who he was. Nolan Garrett in their eyes was still part of their team and still the best man this job called for. I just love the tension building in these books, they are gut wrenching but so powerful in that they are so detailed and perfect down to their minute precision thanks to Taia's brilliant help. Nolan's days are numbered yet he still strives to do what he has set out to do for his brother, Jared and Bex and her daughter. Will he succeed or will he finally run out of time?

Anyone who's ever read one of Peloquin's books knows how exciting his action sequences are. But there is another kind of excitement going on with this series, a quieter, subtler kind that is no less gripping.
We find ourselves once again reading with bated breath as Garret re-examines his early rejection of his connexion with his former life, and comes to a degree of understanding, both of his erstwhile teammates and of himself, that once again turns his life on its edge. At the same time, there is the constant tension of his impending death from incurable poisoning, as it draws ever closer. The three threads of tension are woven into an utterly grippping rope that drags the reader on, despite any other claims to his time. Few readers of Ghost Nemesis, I think, will take more than a couple of days at most to finish it.
A hallmark of Peloquin's work has always been the depth of his characters, and it is the juxtaposition of gripping fight scenes and high adventure with this contemplative journey of self-knowledge and personal growth that makes his work truly special.

Wow! What an adventure our brave Nolan Garrett has had to live!
Ghost Nemesis begins, as books written by Andy Peloquin generally begin: exactly where the previous book ends. Our protagonist receives an elegantly ominous black envelope containing an invitation to the funeral services of Master Sergeant Cedric Kane, the leader of Warbeast Team and the man who convinced Nolan to become a Silverguard. From the moment Garrett arrives on Diomedra, the planet where Kane resided, the action explodes and does not stop!
This is another book that could become an excellent movie or TV series! Highly recommended!

Nolan Garrett does it again, but this time he goes off grid during his rebellion. The powers that be are in an uproar while Nolan,Taia , and Bex uncover way more than they could ever anticipate. The action is fast and searing hot, the emotions are deep, and this series is a definite must read over and over! When you are searching for that one author that will keep you squirming, look no further! Each and every book leaves your mind thoroughly consumed! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

very good book, stopped reading the series because I don’t like cliffhangers.

I love the intensity of this book. It is fast paced full of action and gun play. I enjoy the characters immensely and enjoy watching their growth as a series progresses. I had stopped reading this series because at the end of this particular book there is a cliffhanger, don’t like cliffhangers! Now that the series is complete I will probably now go back and finish reading it since it is very enjoyable if you like me don’t like cliffhangers go ahead and finish the series it is excellent.

Dr. Sladek, where are you?

Very interesting story. Nolan finally sick and tired of Agent side's supposed control of Nolan since it is interfering with activities to help Bex. In an interesting turn, there seems to be a link between Bex's search for Sladek and the research Sladek has undertaken. Maybe in the next book of the series there will be some clarification...Maybe not!?!? Book 7 knows...

Heart in mouth ending!

Another good story about Nolan Garrett. It deals with his guilt about how he left team Warbeast and pits him against another sniper. But there’s a lot more going on that will keep Cerberus fans salivating! If you haven’t read any of this series before I recommend that you start with Cerberus the prequel. You won’t be disappointed.

Another cracking thriller from a master story writer. One that kept me reading from the start to the finish. Intrigue and action all the way. Cerberus certainly gets into some scrapes with or without help. Roll on book seven. Highly recommended.

This one is a doozie...

This episode deserved more stars. Excellent pace, great story and the usual bunch of misfits and mishaps, with ever increasing blast radii. My complaint is a biggie... what a horrible point to leave me hanging.... great book.

AP; my guy

This is my second series with the author and I'm enjoying ever evening reading as much as I can each session. It's just that good, just that simple! If you like anti hero guys and strong girls characters, you'll like!

"Brace for impact!"!!! Famous last words?

It is a funeral he would rather not attend, but Nolan can't neglect paying his respects to his mentor and harshest critic!

This series just keeps getting better and "Ghost Nemesis" blew the roof off! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, my mind couldn't read fast enough. The story is masterfully told, only as Mr. Peloquin can. For example where Andy described Nolan's mental quietness, was amazing, as Nolan waits patiently with dead stillness to take his shot, then misses that window of time and experiencing the frustration of that moment gone, I held my breath the whole time. Plus Nolan's profound sense of loss and feeling like a looser after his initial injuries was not easy for Nolan to swallow nor the hard truths realizing it was all his mental machinations of self-judgement and NOT the judgement of his closes teammates who never judged him, that really hit home. Our mind often work against us and it's up to us to train it just like we do our body. Powerful Powerful book, gut wrenching, engaging, exciting, intense. Bravo!

Loved this book. Full of twists and turns. A absolute amazing dream Nolan has. Written so well. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t want it to end. Great seeing Nolan as the silverguard he once was.
