Монтагю Джеймс има открояващ се стил, съвсем в духа на времето, в което живее. Въпреки че не се е смятал за "сериозен" писател, Джеймс има много сериозно отношение към призрачните истории. Той променя сетинга, казано на български, като счита за много важно действието и героите в неговите истории да бъдат съвременни и близки до хората. Средновекието е твърде назад, казва той, и хората смятат, че всичко е възможно - губи се усещането за напрежение и поставянето на читателя на мястото на героите.
Джеймс прекарва много време в четене на призрачни истории на свои колеги - съвременни и класици, изтъквайки Шеридан Льо Фану като най-добрия автор на такива. Самите разкази на Джеймс не са претенциозни, а това ги прави и лесни за четене (освен, ако имате проблеми със старинния стил, от днешна гледна точка). В тях са плетени интелект и умереност, както самият автор споделя, че е най-добре да се подхожда в такъв тип литература. И както споделя Джеймс:
“If any of [my stories] succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall, or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained.”
"Номер 13" е добър сборник - хубаво е, че най-накрая можем да го прочетем на български. Оценка 3.5/5, 6/10. Няколко разказа не ме грабнаха, въобще, но пък имаше и няколко, които компенсираха за тях. Събраните мисли на М.Р. Джеймс накрая на книгата също са много ценни, тъй като ни позволяват да добием по-добра представа за възгледите и идеалите на автора.

С изключение на заглавният Номер 13, включен в Глас в нощта: страшни истории от класически автори и майстори в жанра, останалите осемнадесет разказа излизат у нас за първи път, а томчето се явява четвъртият сборник на М.Р. Джеймс след Граф Магнус и още 12 разкази за призраци, Само свирни и ще дойда и Съкровището на абат Томас.
Вероятно творбите ще се сторят твърде схематични и еднотипни на съвременния читател (аз лично ги усетих точно такива), слабо вероятно е някоя от тях да му внуши чувство на страх, но М.Р. Джеймс е важна част от хорър-пантеона, един от онези писатели, които успешно прехвърлят моста между готическия роман и модерната литература на ужаса, поради което е просто задължителен за всеки уважаващ себе си фен. Не случайно художественият му стил е наречен джеймсиански, а постулатите, изковани от него продължават да се ползват и в наши дни (разсъжденията на автора по тези въпроси са включени в края на сборника, са доста ценни).
Призракът трябва да е съвременник на наблюдателя - следвайки това основно правило М.Р. Джеймс обръща особено внимание на атмосферата в своите разкази. Защото е важно да опишеш едно свръхестествено явление, но също толкова важно е да го обясниш, като му изградиш достоверна легенда - дали чрез сведения, открити в стари ръкописи, дали чрез думи на очевидец или родови спомени и предания. Запустели имения, порутени църкви, хълмове, станали лобни места на престъпници, ханове... това са обичайните територии, където се подвизават героите, и макар да се ровят в миналото, връзката им с настоящето винаги е здраво съхранена, като по този начин се засилва автентичното звучене на страшните събития...

¡MI PRIMER LIBRO EN INGLES!
Si, tenia un vocabulario relativamente sencillo pero de verdad disfrute la lectura y entendí todo.Obvio había palabras que no entendía, pero les daba un significado en base a la oración.
En cuanto al libro las 5 historias me gustaron, no me dieron tanto miedo pero después de apagar la luz e irme a dormir, un poco asustado estaba.
Dude entre ponerle 4 o 3 estrellas pero me decidí con 4 porque cumplí una meta (leer mi primer libro en ingles) y porque nunca leí un libro de "terror".Ademas porque de verdad disfrute la lectura.
Se los recomiendo si están a empezando a leer en ingles

Las historias son bastante infantiles, aunque entretenidas, y fantásticas para un poco de gimnasia cerebral practicando inglés. Se supone que tienen que dar miedo, pero para nada lo dan. Aunque algunas te dan ganas de seguir leyendo. La verdad es que en muchos momentos sabía que iba a pasar. La historia que más me gustó fue la última: "The lost crowns of Anglia". Es la segunda vez que leo este libro.

I think those ghost stories in this book are really good, especially the 3 first ones. They gave me chills all over the place, and a sense of curiosity to read through till the end and see what the stories turned out, if there was anything happening to the main characters at the end. Very intense and interesting. Highly recommended for anyone who loves horror stories and would like to read short horror stories to refresh their reading taste ^^

I think this book is very interesting, full of scary adventures and stories, I don't believe in ghost actually, but while I was reading I felt like the characters of the stories were real, like someone is watching me or like there are ghosts in my house... it was really scary and funny!
In general I liked the book which made more interested in ghost films and stories.

Dansk nyoversættelse af M.R. James' spørgelseshistorie fra 1904 - Værelse 13 - der foregår i Viborg.
Selve historien er spændende med et godt plot, men ender lidt uforløst.
Udgivelsen som sådan er til gengæld rigtig flot - og interessant læsning. Efter spøgelseshistorien følger to velfortalte artikler: en artikel om M.R. James' besøg i Danmark år 1900 og en artikel om byen Viborg år 1900 med afsæt i stederne nævnt i spøgelseshistorien. Bogen har stemningsfulde illustrationer og et flot, taktilt bogomslag.
Selve historien er spændende med et godt plot, men ender lidt uforløst.
Udgivelsen som sådan er til gengæld rigtig flot - og interessant læsning. Efter spøgelseshistorien følger to velfortalte artikler: en artikel om M.R. This book talks about some mystery things and this book has 4 main parts. And it's like ghost genre. I like "the message of death" most. Because it talks about John Harrington, he was diagnosed lung cancer and he could live only 3 months and before his death, he leaved the message. I really enjoy this book because it's scary book and it's my favourite genre. I would like to recommend this book for someone who likes the scare story or the scare film.

Una adaptación muy sencilla y cómoda de leer. Es un nivel elemental de inglés, las historias se leen en un cuarto de hora. Son historias misteriosas de fantasmas, cargadas de atmósfera, que se leen con gusto. La narración es en inglés británico.

I heard a lot of booktubers talking about the Macmillan collection, I loved the idea of this one and i recommend it for all english beginners, but unfortunately I didn't like this book because all the stories do not have a complete end and besides they aren't scary.

This is good because the writer get to the point soon. In ghost stories in movies the time when "somebody or something is following me but nobody believe me!" took a long. It sometimes frustrating.
