Cities are bombed out ruins and wilderness is humanity’s new home. The undead roam the earth, and the new world order is about the struggle to survive. Sonny Daniels begins an emotional and physical journey of personal survival and protecting those he loves.
While survival is a constant struggle, Sonny’s most desperate fight is the struggle preserve some semblance of a compassionate soul. Sonny and his parents are caught in the zombie outbreak in upstate New York. After the passage of the first year, their base is attacked by bandits and their safety has again been compromised. Fearing for their loved ones, Sonny’s parents send him and his orphaned childhood friends, Ashley and Carrie, to Fort Denver Colorado on a military plane.
When Fort Denver is overrun with zombies, the three are alone in a zombie-infested wasteland without the army’s protection, forced to rely upon one another and a handful of equally desperate survivors they encounter along the journey. Sonny is determined to do whatever it takes to protect Ashley and Carrie while finding a safe place to call home, but survival can force you to make dark decisions.
Outbreak is the first book in the Dark Days series written by Christopher Cole. Based on the zombie apocalypse, this book will hook you from start to end. The story is fast-paced, with many characters; some had to make tough decisions to survive, while some were reckless enough to put everyone at risk. With foul language, violence, and gruesome acts, this book is also about friendship and portrays mortals' demeanor. I'm so eager to read the next installment asap. I recommend this book to adults only.
The Outbreak is a compelling coming of age story set in a post-apocalyptic world. A zombie outbreak in upstate New York creates unfiltered tension and comprises the safety of Sonny Daniels and his parents. Their escape from the disease and mayhem at home to safety at Fort Drum was a perilous journey. Normal people now infected with an unknown disease became monsters attacking and killing anyone crossing their paths. The government is in disarray and survival depends on oneself.
Fearful of the future, Sonny’s parents had no choice but send him along with two or his orphaned friends to Fort Denver Colorado on a military plane. The parents’ nightmare soon becomes an epic story of survival of the fittest for their son and his friends.
Cole is a masterful writer who infuses catastrophic destruction into a city and plays out the outcome for the residents in bizarre circumstances. He has created a story of psychological warfare in a doomsday setting with young characters ill-equipped to withstand the pressure of securing physical safety for themselves.
The opening statement is taut and suspenseful. You immediately want to know what happened to change his belief and loss of hope. You’ll read page after page for the author draws you into the story and holds your attention to the end.
Cole produced an outstanding SCIFI action-adventure that touches on the fears and insecurities of coming of age. Add a new world order, where the undead roam the earth and invade the status-quo and you have an award-winning novel of epic proportion. A must-read for SCIFI fans.
In the middle of a worldwide zombie apocalypse, Sonny and his parents end up in a small community of survivors, trying to stay alive under near-constant threat of attacks. When their shelter is attacked by bandits, all children are evacuated to a military base, and Sonny promises to take care of his neighbour girls Ashley and Carrie. But before long the base gets overrun by zombies, and now the 3 children are on their own in a hostile and life-threatening wasteland… Outbreak is the first book of The Dark Days series. The story reminded me a lot of The Walking Dead. But Sonny’s accelerated coming of age and his struggle to survive and remain compassionate, adds an emotional depth that really moved me. I received a preview copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing.
DNF at 12% "Susan had a cute face but a body that clearly said that she's been around sports her whole life, from her strong legs, fit arms, and her flat stomach" -Sonny, a 10 year old boy, during a crisis.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Predictive but intricate This story begins with an almost ten-year-old boy, Sonny. Carrie and Ashley, his friends whose mom is in quarantine for a disease that is sweeping the world rapidly. CDC seems to have no clue on how to contain it. Brad is Carrie and Ashley’s dad. After his wife’s death he comes to team up with Sonny’s mom Heather and dad Jack. They embark on a journey to Fort Drum, a safe place from the diseased and zombified world. The military is in place and so are checkpoints to ensure no one sick is roaming out. From then on, the world is heading toward a post-apocalyptic landscape. The kids are scared, and the adults do their best to keep them calm and protected before they make it to Fort Drum. It turned for the worse when the military began shooting at sight without making sure if people were infected or not. On their adventure they meet many others that keep the momentum going. About one fourth of the way, the kids grow up as the story jumps forward. As any narrative around surviving an Armageddon go, there are a lot of meaningful conversations with philosophical feel to it. It exposes the truth around humanity and basic instincts. The semantics were pretty similar to many movies I have seen. I didn’t find anything new other than this a character driven book. The author’s simplistic delivery made it effortless to relate to them as they came and went in the story. My favorite quote from the book. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. My least favorite quote from the book. Do what is right, not what is easy. This book ends with a positive note. I would recommend this, if flesh eating monsters are your jam.
This is my first time reading this author and he has written a wonderful book. This plot does have zombies but it’s way more than that, it’s about the human survivors and their humanity. A great read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The premise of this book sounded good until you start reading and realize it's from the point of view of a 10 year old kid!!! WHAT??? Why so young? Why not the P.O.V. of the father, mother or ANY OTHER ADULT that survived? Now we have to follow the lives of three pre-pubescent teens as they traverse their way through the zombie apocalypse??? No thank you. I couldn't finish.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A post apocalyptic world in the midst of a zombie outbreak finds Sonny and his family trying to survive, depending on themselves only. A bit amateurish in the writing, in my opinion. Not sure I will look for the others in the series...
Just by the cover and sinopse i thought this was a book about family, and getting together in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, and it kind of was, what i failled to understand is that the book was suposed to be told by the eyes of a 10 years old child (in the begining of the book, around 12 in the end), named Sonny, ok, its ok, i thought i just was mislead by the cover, but when reading i couldnt stop noticing, and when you do notice, its like when someone tells you that, for instance Sandra in your friends group makes lots of noise when eating, and even if you didnt notice before, you start to notice afterwards and it gets really annoying, Sonny doesnt think, his voice in the book is not like any 10 years old boy...
"Susan had a cute face but a body that clearly said that she’s been around sports her whole life, from her strong legs, fit arms, and her flat stomach – her black hair just reached down to her shoulders." this was him describing a woman in page 20 in the 3rd chapter... the way he describe his parents is also too mature for a little boy mom "My mom was slim, well fit and very beautiful with her blonde wavy straight hair and blue eyes" too much detail that is not for a kid to describe, it could be without the slim and well fit, and talking about the mom in the past tense in the begining of the book doesnt feel right, it should be my mom is, not was...
dad description is even worse, "dad was tall with broad shoulders and had a body that could stop a tank, he looked like a movie star with his handsome face, green eyes, and dark straight blonde hair" and again why the past tense...
after a little while we are introduced to the father of two twin girls named Ashley and Carrie, also blond but without many details just that they are twins and around 11 or 12 years old and that means older than Sonny, but Sonny is way mature than both of them... this was so weird for me... (see its always rubbing me on the wrong way...)
i know that Sonny was supossed to be a mix of Judith and Carl, but the Judith was born on the apocalypse and Carl had many good years with his parents just like Sonny, i dont get why make him so mature, make him a 17 years old instead, because with the way he thinks and speaks it makes a lot more sense....
Aside from my problems with Sonny/Carl ( i always saw him with a dirty cowboy hat, just like carl from walking dead) the story was good, the action i mean, i also think it was a bit too much towards the end, but i wont enter in details for me not to give spoilers.... and Mr Cole, dont forget and make the characters forget other characters, because that is annoying... T_T
I wish I could give more, but this is as far and high i can go... i read a lot of YA books and even children stories, Sonny made me mad because he was even more mature than harry potter, and harry well he didnt have loving parents... i hope the next one gets better
At first i requested this book on netgalley and i was accepted to review it, but the ARC sent to me was damaged and i couldnt open it, so i went to the amazon.com and i bought it, So even thou i am not reviewing the requested ARC is still the same book and i am leaving this review voluntarely.
Rating this book is difficult for me. Being an advocate for developing writers, i always give books I review the highest rating in stars that I can rationalize and prove to myself. This book is a 3.75 rating rounded up to 4. It is a very promising story. Although zombie stories are a dime a dozen nowadays, this one has a clever premise, making the heroes of the story mere children. Sonny, the main character, is well-developed and engaging. The two girls, his friends, are also fairly well-developed. The story is compelling in that it is a surging life-and-death struggle with little time for reflection and a willingness to kill important supporting characters. A good professional editor could take this story and make a best-seller novel out of it. But this author needs the help of a veteran editor. It has a number of crippling problems. The cast of character introduced in the beginning are like a set of paper dolls. All are meticulously dressed, describing practically everything they are wearing and every weapon the author pastes into their hands. The original crew are all good-looking and athletic, with no developmental or psychological quirks or problems. And there is no intra-group tension or conflict even as the world is blowing up around them. This continues to be the case until, in the middle of the book, Pat and Cindy join the main cast. At that point it becomes more realistic in portraying group interactions. And conflict builds the characters far faster than any wardrobe description can. Dialogue is weakened by the constant repetition of details. The reader does not need to see the exact words used as each character in the group is informed separately of each new detail of the plot. There are important thematic ideas being said that do need to be repeated in order to be developed, but those can get lost in the confusion of too many repeated food-acquisition plans and escape-plan details. And there is way too much hugging going on in every post-action scene. I think I could potentially love this book. It appears from other reviews that other readers already do. But I can't help hoping the author has the book professionally edited sometime in the near future.
𝑹𝑬𝑽𝑰𝑬𝑾:- The book “Outbreak (The Dark Days Series Book one)” by “Christopher Cole” has been published with all efforts to make the material error free after the consent of the author. The characters, events, incidents, and everything else mentioned in the book are the author’s imagination.
The cover and the title of the book are indeed eye catching. The starting of the book was superb just like be This book is a zombie apocalypse/harrowing adventure/coming-of-age story that mostly works very well. It is the first of a series. This book gives you a fresh feel that injects like you are into the zombie-horror genre. It’s its own thing. It's different from the all-other stuff of books. After some go through towards the story there’s an outbreak of a strange, unknown virus that turns people into murderous zombies. Human struggling to survive also become major problems. Sonny the main point-of-view character, the story revolves around his age from 9 through around 12. He’s easy moral kid with courage who was separated from his family and goes on with two young friends, Ashley and Carrie. The three become protective of each other. And during reading this you always with them all the way as they battle through harrowing situation after harrowing situation. There’s plenty of death, not only the zombies that have to be killed but also humans close to the three friends. I’ve read and seen enough zombie stuff that it’s getting tired. This book’s presentation of the undead apocalypse through the eyes of a child has re-awakened my interest. The book ends with a positive ending that neatly sets up the next installment.
Some of the lines and phrases in the poem build anticipation, some sad while others are happy. You can feel it while reading these books of part of series and note its great finessing.
In summary, the book and title are unique and I hope you will love the way it's being presented. The book cover is distinctive and love will be developed for the author's effort to imagine situation that give birth to such mind-blowing story.

Review:
👉Talking about the title of the book, the title of the book is really so interesting to read.
👉The cover is appealing and attractive as well.Writing style is appreciable .The story of this book runs around a boy named "Sonny Daniels", he was a very average boy and he was stuck in the zombie's burst at upstate New York with his parents. One year passes and the environment of the base was no longer safe. There are two more characters named "Ashley" and "Carrie" who became sonny's friends during those time. Parents of sonny took a decision and escorted him with his two friends on a military plane to Fort Denver, Colorado. After that place became nothing but a dangerous place, sonny and his two friends were on their own in a wasteland which is filled with Zombies. They all have to face the biggest challenge of their's life and also had to help & depend on each other too, but with the existing help of few other survivors.
This is a gripping piece of writing. A fantastic novel with a unique world and compelling characters that will appeal to any reader looking for a story with plenty of action and adventure. The imagination and detail that has gone into creating such a magnificent world are spectacular. The story is twisty and filled with so many adventures. The author introduces memorable characters and makes them unforgettable by writing traits that distinguish each character and their role in the story.
The main protagonist is Sonny Daniels who is an average 10 year old kid. He was caught with his parents in the zombie outbreak in upstate New York. This is his story of survival and death. The zombie attack made the place unsafe to survive. Later, Sonny and his two orphaned friends, Ashley and Carrie, were sent to the military plane to Fort Denver, Colorado for their safety. As the story progresses, it gets more exciting and I was completely lost in the story.
I really feel that you should just dive into this book without knowing much about the plot. To be honest, I'm the usually the kind of reader who likes to know every little thing about what to expect in advance, but I've great expectations with this author so even I went into this book without knowing anything at all and I was blown away by the story. The talent of writing is god gifted and this author is blessed with really good writing skills. The author clearly loves his characters and this love is highly contagious. If you haven’t read it yet, give it a try. It is thought provoking, exciting and utterly engrossing.
This is a very unique approach to zombie story that I enjoyed reading. This book is not easy to put down and it is an enjoyable read. I absolutely fell in love with the characters and cannot wait to read the next book. It is a real page-turner that is difficult to put down.
I'm fan of this author, seriously his way of storytelling is really very perfect and awesome. This book again like last one is just amazing, this one is a helluva ride of thrill with some terror. There's action, thrill, tension all around the book. This book is the first of what could be one of the best series. Plot is extremely well paced and explained. Story is very interesting and is thrilling, anyone will love this until unless he/she isn't the one who hate zombies. Writing is tremendous and feels way perfect. Language is also lucid which brings the comfort in reading & understanding this book. And the characters and their characterization or development really won my heart, it's really superb. Climax is just brilliant which will leave you wondering what will happen next.

For the ones who likes action, survival, and stories of Zombie this book will be a masterpiece for them. So, get this book today from Amazon and get to the ride full of zombies.
Normal lives of people take a devastating turn when a deadly brain altering disease spreads like a wildfire. The ones who are still uninfected must step out in search of a safe haven amidst the harsh reality of the new world. Sonny Daniels, an innocent young boy, unassuming under the loving protection of his family is separated from them and embarks upon a journey of taking responsibility for the safety of his friends, who are his only family now.
There is nowhere to hide unless he is smart enough to be always a few steps ahead. Every corner they turn death March towards them, pushing them to question their morals and what they know themselves to be. With the whole world falling apart and world governments abandoning the very lives they swore to protect, will the group of friends and all the others with them survive to tell the story?
The story is very compelling in instilling in the readers what the characters are going through. Painting a picture of a destroyed world, it creates a somber image of what an unforgiving world is like. Each chapter evoking different emotions helps in the better understanding of the characters and connects with the plot. It makes the reader wonder, what would they do if they were to be in a situation similar to the story.
This was a good read. It’s a coming of age story set in a zombie apocalypse and told from the perspective of an 11-12 year old boy. That gives it a fresh feel that injects new life (pardon the pun) into the zombie-horror genre. It’s not comedic, not drearily nihilistic and not a gratuitous splatter-fest. It’s its own thing.
I debated between giving this 4 or 5 stars. On the 4-star side, it’s a little sloppy in terms of editing and a lot of the “zombie situations” and related plot turns have been done before. On the 5-star side, I enjoyed the characters and story, plus I think the writer did a great job of colliding a kind of corny and earnest wholesomeness with a pitch-black situation without pulling punches. This resulted in some unexpectedly original and emotional moments. Ultimately, I went with 5 stars because I’m genuinely interested in reading more about these characters and story. This is part one of a series, but it has a solid enough conclusion that it makes for a satisfying stand-alone story.
I’ve read and seen enough zombie stuff that it’s getting tired. This book’s presentation of the undead apocalypse through the eyes of a child has re-awakened my interest.
This is the first book of the series and a masterpiece altogether. Yippee !! Zombie is here. Let’s enter a world of zombies and be scared of them. Zombie, I did read you but for sure I wasn’t scared of you. Though, I haven’t read a zombie genre for a while now but it was refreshing and out of the box read.
It was like reading a hit movie because it had all the elements within. The story has been written from a perspective of a teen boy. He is a boy with a mature way of thinking. The other characters were too intriguing, had a balance way of describing characters.
The country was attacked by the zombies. What happened to Sonny and his family? What was the government’s reaction ? Were they able to escape the difficult situation ?Sonny is my favourite character following by Brad. The story is fast paced and didn’t stretch much. It was a roller coaster ride which I enjoyed the most.
This is an engrossing read and I’m looking forward to read the part-2. The language is simple and easy to understand with an attractive cover. Go and order your copy now !
In the opening pages of Outbreak (The Dark Days Series Book 1) main character Sonny Daniels is perhaps a little more babied by his parents than the average nine-year-old. A sudden global pandemic outbreak changes their lives forever and, as Sonny frequently says, “Sometimes when bad things happen you have to grow up faster." As the story progresses, Sonny matures as he grows closer to his core group of survivors, even considering some of them as family members. Due to their dependence on his new skills and abilities, he makes selfless choices to protect those he loves. His group seems to be always on the run as they search for a location where they are safe from both human invaders and zombies. The gore and language in Outbreak make it unsuitable for children and young teens. The tense shift in narration is confusing; also I would recommend another round of editing. But if you are a fan of high action/adventure literature featuring flesh-eating zombies, you will enjoy this book! Fans of World War Z will love it.
First of a series, society as we know it is gone. Cities are in ruins, and the wilderness has taken over. Nothing is more important than survival. As if that wasn't enough, the undead walk the earth.
Sonny Daniels is an average kid, caught, with his parents, in the zombie outbreak in upstate New York. After the first year, the base is no longer safe. Sonny's parents send him, and two orphaned friends, Ashley and Carrie, on a military plane to Fort Denver, Colorado.
After that place becomes no longer safe, the three are on their own in a zombie-filled wasteland. They have to rely on each other, and the few other survivors they meet. Finding a new place to call home would be nice, but hard decisions may to be made in the meantime,
This is a really good novel. The whole zombie genre may be overdone, but the author does a fine job with the story and characters. This is an entertaining tale that will keep the reader interested.
Outbreak is an amazing fictional book and it’s a first book of Dark Days series and it’s about zombie apocalypse.read book to know all cause it’s a very intriguing story and it’s started at a low pace but quickly as everything started building up it pick up the pace and takes you on an amazing journey with it.
The world which has been created by the author is just amazing which also kept the all readers engaged to the story.
Writing style of the book is not that great there are few grammatical error but other than that everything is fine and anyone can read it easily.
The title of the book is also very good and author has narrated this story very nicely and kept you interesting throughout the book.
Cover and title of the book is very interesting. Cover has lots of things which attract the reader towards them.
I really love this book and I suggest this book to all the crime thriller lover out there.
It is summer vacation and almost 10-year-old Sonny is glad that he can sleep in as long as he wants. Dad Jack, mom Rachael, and Sonny went to the movies instead of the pool. On the way back, they see a hospital with tents outside and a large sign saying Quarantine: Infected Area. Weeks later, the military shows up and starts rounding residents up for transport to Fort Drum and so the trek into danger begins. This story is excellent, covering what it could be like if we actually did have a zombie invasion due to an uncontrollable illness. There is plenty of action here and I cannot wait to read book 2. Very highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sonny is a ten year old boy who wakes up ready to enjoy the summer holidays with his mom and dad. On the way to the movies, he and his family discover a mysterious pandemic is causing havoc.
Soon they learn the disease is turning people into zombies. Although the theme of blood thirsty zombies isn't exactly original, what was refreshing was the story beingbtold from the viewpoint of a very young, precocious boy.
More editing of this book would have been advisable since there were point of view switches without warning, as well as spelling and grammatical issues.
First, decent enough story. Not super original but the zombie thing has been beat to death. Second, note to author. Your hard work is undone by the editing. Get some editing apps. Professional editing is expensive. Apps like grammerly and prowritingaid will help a ton without spending thousands. Use a couple. One will catch errors that the other does not. Third, show not tell. Editing apps will have links to explanations about this. YouTube does a well.
Outbreak is a gripping, super fast-paced zombie thriller that kicks off The Dark Days series. Aimed at young adults, it follows eleven year old Sonny as his world turns upside down during a terrifying outbreak in NY. With themes of loyalty, courage, and growing up too soon, this book gives heart-racing action while keeping the horror age appropriate. People who like ya apocalyptic zombie books should enjoy this. I did, and I’m looking forward to the next instalment.
First of all, I have never read a zombie story. It’s simply not my type of story. But I read the reviews on this one and decided to give it a chance. So glad I did. I absolutely loved this story. I loved the characters and the way they grew and developed through the story, especially the unlikely but loveable hero Sonny. Going to buy the second book right now!
There’s some grammar and formatting issues, for sure, so don’t read it if you care about that. But I don’t believe that should cripple an author’s attempt at writing a story, and especially not this one, as it’s pretty solid other than that. Loved the main character and his journey; he’s likable and easy to root for. I commend the author on the start of this series and would love to check out the second one!
I enjoyed this new Sci fi series for zombie apocalypse fans. There are some issues with switching viewpoints between characters that really didn't make sense, and sometimes the narrative through the eyes of a young boy was more or less believable. Overall, I liked it enough to try the second book of the series.
This is for sure a page turner. It will have you on the edge of your seat the entire way. Seeing the characters develop and grow was a definite plus. I'm not sure what's more scary in this situation... The zombies or the people. If you're into a good zombie story, this is it. But it's also a great coming of age book slash thriller.
I thought for svp-if fans this was a great book. The characters evolve in the story as it progresses. It's a coming of age story of a group of people doing more than just surviving, but trying to hold onto their humanity. This story tries to show what it means to be human and to care for others.
