Losing Control

Rate this book
A series of moments can change your life... And it isn't until you are in too deep that you see how far you have fallen...

Lucy remembers the first hit as if it were yesterday.
The first time his hand connected with her cheek.
The first time that he caused her physical pain.
The first time that he shattered her already fragile heart.
He preyed on her vulnerability. He took her confidence away from her. He ruined her perfect ideas of a loving relationship.
She let him control her.
She let him abuse her.
She let him break her.
She doesn't want to be this person.
She doesn't want to be weak.
She needs to save herself, but to do that, she must understand why.
Why did she let him dictate?
Why did she let him hurt her?
Why did she lose control?

Will Lucy find the strength to leave a man that has destroyed the person she once was?
Or will it take a deeper love from a long-time friend to help her see that there is another way out?
A turbulent romance, a desire to find love, and a familiar face that may just be her saving grace.

Losing Control is book one of The Control Duet.

I’m struggling to find words to describe how amazing & touching this book was. I may need to come back at some point and alter this review because I feel like I can’t do justice to Lindsey Powell’s incredible words.

Throughout reading I was hurting for Lucy & devouring the pages desperate to see what would happen next. Lucy was so brave & I could relate to her so much in that she loved Michael, but sometimes life throws those curveballs & at the end of the day, is love always enough? In the words of the great Lindsey Powell, you’ll have to read it to find out!

An incredibly emotional & well deserved 5 stars from me!

This is the first book that I have read by this author and the first book in this duet series, Control #1. There is a trigger warning because domestic violence and control and this is the main story line throughout this book.

I was wary at first about reading this book because of the trigger warning and as I have a very personal account of this myself I was hesitant. But the author has written it brilliantly and tackled this subject with a lot of care and has written about Lucy so very real. I could feel all that was happening to Lucy and wanted to jump inside my book and help and hug her. She was already trying to get over her ex which was so hard because he was a jerk to and she just wants to move on from him. She is a very independent and beautiful women and loves her job. She also has great friends that I loved reading about to in this book. Michael is the man that comes into Lucy's life and she thinks at first that he makes it better but like so many other woman it happens without you even realising it and this is how it happens for Lucy. She was happy and then she wasn't and its so hard for her. Michael is a manipulator and will do anything to make sure that she is his only.

I connected to this story on a very deep level and the way that this author has written flows and I was gripped hoping Lucy was going to run, hide, stand up for herself and let her friends help her. So many women try and tackle this alone and that's what Lucy tried to do. This author has written the characters in a way that the reader can connect with them and also had my emotions all over as I felt every word on the page. I was really rooting for Lucy to get away and my heart was aching for her. This author does throw in a curve ball at the end that i'm sure will make sense to us in the second book. If you are triggered by domestic violence then don't read this book but otherwise this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. This book ends on a cliff hanger and I desperately want to read the conclusion to see how this story pans out for Lucy and hopefully Cal too. Wink

A lot of my five star reads are very rollercoaster in your face reads. This is not that kind of read. It’s a slow burn of heart break. I don’t know that I have ever wanted to scream more at a character to see the warning signs. Lucy is recovering from a broken heart when Micheal sweeps in being Prince Charming. There romance is sweet and full of promise until they move i together. Like a master manipulator that he is things start of slowly. Seriously heart wrenching to watch such a vibrant and sweet girl who is in love miss all the signs. My heart is broken and the cliffhanger has me both hopeful abs scared to death for her. This isn’t a romance with hearts and flowers. It’s truly a slow burn heart break that hits real close to home and makes it all the more real. While I am not triggered by my past if domestic abuse is one for you then pass on this. However if you aren’t triggered by it and you’re looking for a book to get you deep in your soul then Yes!

Lindsey Powell is a new to me author. She was recommended to me and I am so happy to have read Losing Control. There are triggers in place, because domestic violence is main thread throughout this book, so beware.
Lucy and Michael are our prominent characters, with Lucy’s friend, Cal slowly making his way into her life. I’m honest when it comes to writing/reading a book (BETA/ARC), so I need to be here as well. The beginning, for me, was a little flat/slow. The interaction with Michael was awkward. However, with the introduction of Cal, increased interaction with her friends, and the present of a backbone to Lucy, these completely flipped this read for me.
Lucy was an endearing character despite all the ‘stuff’ that was happening to her. Lindsey set this portion of the book along with Lucy’s background and character amazingly well. It was difficult to read these experiences when all I wanted to do was yell at her and give her the biggest hug ever.
Michael, hmpf. Michael was a completely different person for me. The beginning was a little slow/disjointed for me. I had to sit and ask myself why? I soon realized it was because I DID NOT like Michael. I understand that he was needed to start the story line, but just like a de-carbonated pop, it was a little flat.
Now, I’m going to totally flip on you. As I kept reading, I was immersed in the story line and as the story progressed, the more I could not get enough. I was salivating for more and could not wait until ‘the end’. I was in love and thoroughly invested in Lucy’s journey. Unfortunately, it ended in a cliffy, GAH!! I found out that I will not have to wait long. Ms. Powell, thank you for keeping me on my toes!!

Heart Wrenching & Bloody Brilliant

I don't know where to begin with this review and am rarely left this shaken and speechless. As an author and a bookworm, I love words and always have plenty to say.

However, there's not an appropriate word to describe this story's massive greatness. I know that sounds cheesy, but there you have it. Take wonderful, excellent, superb, brilliant, spellbinding, breathtaking, outstanding, and put them together to get an idea of the talent behind this book!

This author knocked my socks off with this raw, emotional, painful story. I've been where Lucy, the heroine, is before, and it's a dark, ugly place. I don't include spoilers in my reviews, but every feeling, thought, and emotion is perfectly executed.

I get goosebumps just thinking back on this story and have the utmost respect for this author and her incredible talent.

It felt as if she was inside my mind, heart, and my soul. This is a beautiful, sad, scary, rollercoaster ride that does not let up. I was on the edge of my seat and couldn't breathe at times. I wanted to look away; the story so intense.

I sat alone, outside on my deck in the wee hours of the morning, screaming at Lucy to RUN, yet I knew why she wouldn't. She couldn't… not yet.

This book left me physically shaking- talk about giving you the feels- in tears and overall shaken. Losing Control may be Fiction, but it's also very REAL!

I bow to you, Lindsey Powell. This was beyond powerful and exceeded all my expectations. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book and rooting for Lucy. She has the strength to overcome, yet she doesn't know just how strong she already is.

Thank you for sharing your unbelievable talent with us all.

I was offered an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This book had my heart thumping so fast and hard in my chest, I couldn't calm it.
The story of Lucy is heartbreaking. Certain moments in this book had my nerves crashing through me.
Lindsey writes this delicate and brutal reality amazingly, making you feel all kinds of emotion.
I can't wait for book two and what it has in store for Lucy and Micheal, I already know that my heart will be leaping out of my chest.

Lindsey has done it again, I swear the pain is real.
I didn’t expect to be so engrossed in this book.
Lucy is left heartbroken after her ex dumped her, but when the office hottie peruses her, she eventually falls for his charms...

From butterfly’s in her belly
To fearing for her life.

I swear to god I just wanted to scream for someone to help her, and then it ends like that 😲
She better be ready to fight till the death ....

But this happens in real life.
The possessiveness,
The small things they control.
Taking your friends away so you have no one to turn to.
Taking your independence and making you depend on them.
The first arm grab soon turns to the first punch , the first kick.

Truly gut wrenching.
I’m praying for Lucy to gather strength for the next instalment..

Amazingly done

On the edge of my seat!

It’s going to be very hard to review this book without spoiling it, and I know no matter what I say, it will not do it justice.

Lindsey Powell has created a story that is woven with realism. Sadly, the main character Lucy is a representation of many women today—living in a war they call home. There were times I wanted to scream at Lucy, tell her to open her eyes and see the manipulation. But that’s the thing isn’t it, it’s always easier to see domestic violence from the outside looking in. Nobody knows what they would do in that situation unless they’ve lived it personally.

I’m really looking forward to the second instalment of Lucy’s journey. I know Lindsey will not disappoint. I’m 1000% ready for Lucy to rise from the ashes and show us how strong she can be.

Highly recommend! ❤️❤️

I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I’m not really sure how to start this review, my heart was constantly pounding reading this. I devoured the pages so quickly as I really wanted to know what Michael would do next to Lucy. The turmoil she was under I felt through the pages, I was utterly transfixed with the story knowing that there are people out in the real world that suffer from emotional and physical abuse. At times I felt so uncomfortable reading this but then I guess that is what a truly great writer does, make you feel the story and draw you in. But please, you can’t leave me on a cliffhanger 😩

I honestly don't know where to start with this review.
This book was unlike anything I've ever read before.
It's one of the stories that needs to be told but it's not pretty, it's not hearts and flowers.
Lucy's story is heartbreaking.
You sympathise with her because she's in a no win situation.
I spent most of the book with my heart in my mouth. I could feel every beat of my heart i was so focused on the story.
Lindsey Powell does a fantastic job of telling Lucy's heartbreaking story.

I need book two asap!

I don't even know where to start with this book.
It's dark, it's gritty, it emotional and it's beautifully written.
I couldn't put it down, I needed to stay reading for poor Lucy. I felt like I was there with her through every moment, my heart literally bleeds for her.
This romance story is far from pretty but it's a story that needs to be told and Lindsey has done it to perfection.
This book without doubt will be one of my all time favourite reads. I cannot wait for the second part of Lucy's story.

Just finished an arc of this book that I was lucky enough to win, I litterally read it in a day, I couldnt put it down, my heart was breaking for Lucy and I switched from loving Michael to hating him, I was so glad when Cal came into the story, even from the brief mentioning of his name at the start I knew he was a character that I was going to to want to hear more of, a book full of love, heartbreak, friendships and strength, I cannot wait for book 2!!!!

I’m not sure that anything I write as a review for this story will do it justice at all. I’m absolutely blown away by the emotional roller coaster that was this beautifully written story. This is definitely not an easy story to read because the topic is so serious but Lindsey wrote it in a way that not only could I feel everything going on I could feel the strength of the character. Lindsey outdid herself with this story and I can’t wait for book 2.

Yes there are triggers and yes this ends on a cliffhanger but it’s beyond worth it...

This book nearly broke me. It was beautifully written. The story was hard to read at times, but it offered very real insight into how Lilly found herself in an unhealthy relationship. I felt it all for her, sadness, anger, shock, despair, and heartache. No woman looks for men like Micheal, but men like him never really show their true colors until they are sure they have the women they are after trapped. It's all about control and this author showed us how that happened. I look forward to reading the second part of this amazing story.

For me books are often an escape from every day life with the sweet romance, characters and make believe worlds but sometimes a book comes along the way that hits close to home and takes your breath away.

Losing Control by Lindsey Powell is that one book! The topic discussed in the book is one that a lot of women go through, men also but it’s a topic that often imitates life in the sense that it’s not widely discussed or brought to light but the effects of domestic abuse can last a lifetime.

Lindsey tackles this subject with such care and attention to detail that I often forgot about the abuse until it happened and when it did I felt very slap and punch our heroine received.

Losing Control is book one of a duet, so while this book address the abuse it also allows for the characters to develop and the storyline to evolve.

With that being said, our heroine Lucy was a character that I instantly felt a connection with and even though she is being abused there is still a strength to this character that you see throughout the book, she just happens to believe in love with her while heart, which in this case could cost her dearly!

We then have, Michael, Lucy’s boyfriend. There’s a saying that fits this character perfectly ‘looks can be deceiving’ and Michaels character definitely comes across as the caring and loveable character but as the story develops you start to catch glimpses of the evil behind the mask.

I can’t wait to see where Lindsey takes us in book two, Taking Control! I would highly recommend this book everyone looking for something different!

This book, Just wow and that ending. So can I have next book like now? Lucy had bad break up from her ex-boyfriend and then she met Michael who seemed to be perfect. Everything was perfect until it wasn't. She tried to push her friends away so they wouldn't find out what is happening. I wanted to yell Lucy to run away so many times. Can't wait to read what happens next.

Right, not entirely sure how to word this review because nothing I can say will do this book the justice it deserves! This book sucked me in instantly and I had struggled to put it down during my free time I stayed up reading until my eyes were sore because I needed to know what was going to happen.

I won the opportunity to read an advanced readers copy of this book. This is the first time I am reading a Lindsey Powell book so I had no idea what to expect from this author and her style of writing.

The prologue ensured I was on edge instantly. The words written were powerful and I had an idea where the story was headed. However, I was not expecting to be completely consumed by the story. I was extremely emotionally invested in this book and cannot wait for the next instalment to be released.

The ways in which Lindsey Powell has captured and expressed Lucy’s thoughts and feelings throughout her experiences with Michael were very emotional and often difficult to read. This book attacks your heart in a incredible way and at many points my heart was racing. I wanted so desperately for someone to storm in and save her however I feel it’s very important that the topic of domestic violence is shared, which is what has been done here in such a phenomenal manner.

I found myself conflicted in certain situations of the story as I so desperately wanted Lucy’s friends to notice behaviour changes and to continue to push her into talking to them but at the same time I didn’t because the consequences for this were horrific for Lucy.

Michael’s character is written so well I feel genuine hatred for this man and his controlling and manipulative ways.

I won’t say too much more but I will say this book is a MUST READ.

You.Are.Not.Ready!

This book will have you hooked as soon as you start it, it starts as any usual workplace romance might; eyes meet across the room leading to first dates and a charming MC who seems to see the beauty in our heroine even when she feels at her lowest.

.

Michael is handsome and charming, saying and doing all the right things, easing Lucy back into dating. You could almost fall for him yourself at first, your next book boyfriend right?? Wrong. If you've read the blurb you will know this isn't your typical workplace romance.

.

No. This is a rollercoaster of raw potent emotions. Love, anger, confusion, jealousy, self-doubt, fear, and pain. You will want to throat punch Michael, to kick his man parts and watch him squirm.

.

Losing Control is intense, but Lindsey has managed to handle the tough subject covered in this story impeccably, knowing when to allude to events and when to cover them in detail.

.

The inner turmoil of Lucy's perspective gives a greater depth to this story, we see everything through Lucy's eyes, we feel along with her. We've all said it haven't we, we've all said that 'if X happens I'll leave', and we mean it at the time, we don't believe that it could happen. But it DOES, it happens everyday and Lucy's story shows that it is easier said then done. Her conflicted and confused inner monologues hit me hard, and made me feel for people who endure this even more than I already did.

.

I was holding my breath at the beginning of chapters wondering when the next blow to my gut would be dealt by Lindsey's words. The further into the book you get, the more intense and shocking the story becomes, and the fear Lucy feels will grip you tight.

.

BUT it's important to note that there is light in all this darkness. I need me a Cal please. Pretty please? I hope we see lots more Cal in the second part of the control duet, because I don't think he is a quitter!

.

Of course as a duet, losing control ends on a cliffhanger, and it is a *gasp* moment. Honestly, book two could go either way. When these events occur in real life there is usually only two ways of being free of them....I'm equally looking forward to and scared of finding out which direction Lucy's story takes.

.

I want to say thank you and well done to Lindsey. I know she has been worried about how this would be recieved as she has been so open about that. But in my opinion, she has written this so well, so realistically and has achieved what I always look for in books - to make the reader FEEL.

.

Please take heed of Lindsey's trigger warnings if you are unsure if you can handle the subject matter. I've tried to avoid specific details to keep my review spoiler free, but if you would like further information before deciding whether to read this book, feel free to contact me.

I've got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My first thing to say about this book is, I think the author wrote it smartly! Why?

Well, as we might now know the book is about domestic violence and as we also know, it is a triggering issue to talk about. Lindsey wrote it for the people who want to "learn" or educate themselves on this topic, but as well as for the people who maybe have been through this.

In the book Lindsey doesn't talk much about "the thing", but rather shortly. There is much more going on behind the scenes, which she reflects later on. For me personally, I would like to read more from the time when things happened, so that I could connect more with Lucy, but at the same time I do know, that it would be insensitive for some people. However what I got was also plenty. I could connect with Lucy, maybe by the half of the book, rather than at the beginning, but it was still plenty.

By the end of the book, I was sad, devastated, mad and furious. I felt so much for Lucy and what she is going through. I loved how she still kept being strong, even though her thoughts were jumbled and not making a lot of TRUE sense when they should, she pushed through and stayed strong.

This issue is not easy to talk, write or read about. It's something that is happening all around the world to woman, man and children.

This heavy topic is also something we all should be aware of and that's why I like to read these books. I love to educate myself, so in case someone close to me is suffering, I am able to help.

The end of the book was well thought-out, what I am waiting for is if Lucy will be strong enough to stick through and survive her story or if she will just lay down. I'm hoping she'll stick through! I can't wait to read more of Lucy's life and choices in the next book Taking Control

Losing Control is an incredible read. It is also, however, a difficult one as well.

This book starts in heartbreak, and also end in heartbreak. There's also a little hope sprinkled in, but the story is heartbreaking nonetheless.

Reading it at first, I had hope for Lucy, but as the story got more and more intense, I only felt Lucy's pain as to what was happening. It's very different from what this author usually writes, but it was very good.

The story scales over the relationship of Lucy and Michael, from the very first time they dated to the cliffhanger. It was oftentimes difficult to read and my heart was in my mouth as to what was happening, feeling as helpless as she was. This book discusses domestic violence in great detail, and that is a very sensitive subject, so please be careful when reading this. It can cause triggers.

It was also a very emotional read. It hit on certain things that got me quite emotional, and it was powerful and made a point.

This isn't a book of fairytales and happiness. It is raw. It is graphic and often very intense and emotional.

However, it was a very well-written read. And it was really good. It's a sensitive read, and it will definitely make you feel.

I highly recommend, but please be careful and aware of the sensitive subjects in the novel before reading.

I finished this book a few days ago, and honestly wanted to wait to write my review. It is a dark, heartbreaking story about Lucy and the downwards spiral her life takes when she gets into an abusive relationship. You know going into this story it is going to be an emotional upheaval, and it is. There is so much heartbreak, and you are right with Lucy as she is broken apart piece by piece. As the reader, you just wish good things would happen. But bad just keeps happening, you are with her through the hurt, and the questions as to why she deals with it in the way that she does. She is so raw, and unsettled in her actions. Her feelings and reasoning for staying are valid, but you want to pull her out so she never has to feel that negative energy again. And the cliffhanger at the end, it sets up the next book and truthfully it could devastate us when it opens. Lindsey Powell gives us an unfiltered and honest approach to the abuse that Lucy lives with, and how it manifests itself, and I can't wait for the next book!

Y'all. Losing Control was intense AF. Gut-wrenching. Beautifully written. It's a story that needed to be told. Sometimes hard to read because it felt so real and authentic. Michael is an expert at gaslighting. The mind games he played were so on point for the type of "man" he is. I don't think I've screamed at a book more than I did at this one. Lucy's inner monologues were soul-crushing and infuriating. My heart broke for her. But I also wanted to shake her awake and make her see her worth. Which is normally how these real-life stories go. She has to see it for herself. Which truly crushed me. I was on the edge of my seat with every page turned. I am dying for book two. I need to know what happens, Lindsey! ⠀

I highly recommend Losing Control. It's a five-star read. Which comes as no surprise. Lindsey Powell is an incredible storyteller. The woman can weave. Make sure to take all the deep breaths with this one. Lots of WOOSAH'S. Maybe have some tea on hand. Or a glass of wine. And throw in some tissue while you're at it. You will need it. But, so worth it. ⠀

I have loved all of Lindsey Powell's novels. I connect with her storytelling and with the content she writes about. Who doesn't love a steamy romance?

Losing Control is the opposite side of what Lindsey usually writes, but damn if it isn't just as good, and I would have to say in my opinion this is the best she has written. The writing is laid bare, raw emotion on the pages. I was hooked from the start.

Lucy has recently been cheated on by someone she thought she would be spending the rest of her life with. She feels like she can't and won't be loved. Welcome Micheal, a man she works with. He says and does all the right things. Lucy can't believe her luck.

Lucy's friend is so glad that she is getting back to the way she used to be, before the break up. All seems to be going great and wham, Lucy's world has just been flipped.

I believe that this is some of Lindsey's best writing. I also can't wait for the next part in this duo.

Emotional, raw, and real, this isn’t an easy story to read, but it’s worth it. Lucy thought she’d chosen a better man this time. A more loving man. And he was … at first. Just long enough for her to be confused as his behavior started to change. Just long enough to hope things could go back to the way they were.

It’s the hope we all have when a relationship starts to go south, except this one went so much worse. But that’s the thing about abuse: sometimes it’s so subtle that we don’t even release we’re being abused until it’s too late. Until we’re trapped. But through it all, you can’t help rooting for Lucy as she bravely struggles to come to terms with her reality and find a way out. While this was not my usual read, it definitely swept me up into Lucy’s life and kept me turning the pages.

Losing control
This book was heartbreak
The storyline shows how the journey of a couple falling love and how quickly that can change without realising, And how sometimes love is truly blind.
⚠️Warning this book contains details of domestic abuse. ⚠️
Although this storyline is disturbing it was fantastically written and highlighted many struggling hundreds of people face every day.
Lucy’s story broke my heart I cried and screamed throughout this story but it shows how manipulative people can be and even a strong person can be fooled and warn down.
This is a tragic, emotional, read that tore at my heartstrings. Oh and that cliffhanger!!! I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Touching. Heartbreaking. Emotional.

You ever read a book that touches your soul? Losing Control is that book for me. I’ve been Lucy. A lot of what Lucy experiences resonated with me. There's a pattern. You don't see it until it's too late. Many emotions such as anger and sadness were felt while reading. That’s a good thing! Miss Powell did an amazing job in channeling all the emotions and feelings that go into Lucy’s journey. It isn’t an easy topic and one that happens more than we care to admit. Bravo to the author for taking such a subject on!

I highly recommend this book. This is powerful read and it’s wonderfully written. Make sure you have some tissues handy as this book may have you ugly crying! I give this 5 stars.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster! It talks about a very sensitive and real subject - which is domestic abuse and violence. It's unreal how many women suffer, but are too afraid to do anything about it because of the consequences.

I think that Lindsey did a great job of portraying how women feel in these situations and also it turns out the sweetest guy can turn out to be an abuser.

Michael acted all nice and was the perfect boyfriend and then the possessiveness started creeping in. His empty promises and how he did this because he "loved" Lucy.

Lucy, on the other hand, was so strong despite everything and she just didn't want to get anyone else involved because she was scared that her friends will suffer. She always thought of everyone first before herself.

I cannot wait for Taking Control and seeing what her decisions will be.

Such a great book, definitely recommend it.

P.S. I did get an ARC in a return of my honest opinion.

This is book one in the Control Duet, telling the story of Lucy and what happens when she falls for the seemingly perfect Michael. I'll start by saying this, you need to read this book. Again, you👏🏻need👏🏻to👏🏻read👏🏻this👏🏻book. It's not the usual romance that you would expect from Lindsey. It's not hearts and flowers. It's raw. It's gritty. It's real. And it's important. It's important that we understand this is happening behind closed doors every day. The way that Lindsey writes just sucked me in from the first word and I was held captive, pretty much holding my breath in parts. So, Lindsey, I applaud you for taking a chance on something different and putting this out there. It's brilliant and I can't wait to see how this tale concludes in Book two!

This story was completely and utterly harrowing!

My heart broke for Lucy for all that she went through.
Michael was everything she needed to feel confident again and to move on from a previous relationship that broke her heart. At first he said and did all the right things to make it seem like everything was perfect but then little by little it changed until she was in a hell of relationship.

The subtlety of the abuse was like watching a car crash in slow motion with no way to stop it.
The back in forth of justifying actions, excuses and unwarranted forgiveness made the abuse Lucy was goin through so frustrating, emotional and real.
This story completely wrecked me as I read each chapter and the Cliffhanger left me screaming WWWHHHYYYYY!!!!
