Marilize is an author of historical romance set in Cape Town, South Africa, but writes short stories inbetween for fun.

She used to comb the libraries and second-hand book sales for out-of-print copies of Afrikaans historical romance novels by authors such as Wille Martin and Ena Murray. She has always had a fascination for Cape Town history and Regency Romance, and thought to introduce the rest of the world to Regency-era Cape Town.

She's tried her hand at many different occupations, including working at a riding school as riding instructor, trail guide, stable manager, saddler, and horse handler on TV shows. She's worked as freelance typist, photographic assistant, maintenance contractor's assistant, Public Relations Consultant, and Administrative Assistant. These days she is a proud member of ROSA (Romance Writers' Organization of South Africa).

She lives with her husband and son in Muizenberg, Cape Town, and is currently hard at work on her next novel.

Kevin Nash is a ladies man and has quite the status. He is always eager to meet new women. When he notices Alicia, she does not welcome his attention. He decides there and then, that she will be his and by doing so, has put her reputation at risk. Doing the only thing he can to save her standing, he offers to marry her. Alicia has a past that has scarred her, and this past is not helping her new marriage. When Kevin’s past lover arrives at their door, Alicia does the opposite of what everyone would assume her to do. And so begins a three-way relationship, where friendships are formed, relationships are bonded and above all, healing and forgiveness. This is the first time I have read a historical romance and I must be honest and say I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters in this story; the plot was clever and Kevin was one very lucky man. The chemistry will certainly have your kindle steaming up. I loved how the author created each scene with plenty of description to take you back in time. Her eye for detail and her ability to craft a fast-moving, suspenseful story was entertaining and polished. I have no hesitation in recommending this Historical romance with the added FFM, which definitely spiced things up at the Cape of Storms.

Spicy and unique.
I am not sure what I expected with this one but it turned out to be a rather interesting story and I liked it. Kevin, Alicia, and Isobel may for an unusual trio in this time period. The wife, the mistress, and the jerk okay maybe he is not a jerk but Quinn just maybe a jerk in training. The interactions between all the characters were good and the book kept my attention right from the start. This is a fast-paced story and written by a very talented author. I hope you check it out. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Beautifully written
I’ve never read a book from this time period (1800’s South Africa) and know precious little about it, but I found that that didn’t matter. The characters were still compelling, their lives and losses transcendent to time. Such a beautiful story about love; I would highly recommend it.

I was wary when setting out to read Kevin. Love triangles are not my thing, but Marilize Roos took a very awkward situation and handled it with finesse. I found myself rooting for the characters and ended up enjoying the book.
The story is well-written and fast-paced, the historical details of the Cape of Good Hope are on point.

This is my third book by this author and the second addition to The Lords of Good Hope. Kevin Nash is always on the hunt for new delights. He doesn’t hesitate in stalking his prey before he unleashes his brawny charms.

‘You’re mine, he thought at her, and as if she heard him, she tore her eyes away from him, her movements flustered, and he nearly chuckled when she stumbled. You might run, my Angel, but you know you’re mine.’

Alicia, would never welcome the attention of such a man. Her past had finally collided with her present and she wasn’t about to let her twin brother suffer again. She had no choice....but to accept his offer to save her reputation and her brother’s.
Just when you think wedded bliss is upon the newlyweds, a dark haired beauty from Kevin’s past delivers a blow that changes everything for all three of them. The steam starts to rise as Alicia, Kevin, and now Isabel, must navigate new territory to heal wounds and conquer love.

Surprising… and Surprisingly Excellent… Historical Romance

This book was a surprise… and a good one at that! I rarely find stories surprising, as I read a lot of historical fiction. From the cover of the book, you might think this book is steamy bordering on erotica with the unusual relationship depicted, but it is not. It is certainly steamy and spicy after a certain point, but those scenes are written tastefully and flow directly from the characters and where they are at... and there is so much more to the book than that. The book is surprisingly complex, with characters who have deep backstories and complex family dynamics that come into play as the story progresses, allowing for natural conflicts and growth arcs for all the main characters. This book does feature an unconventional relationship between a man and two women, but the author has artfully shown why it works for them, making complete sense for each character. Parts of it were surprisingly beautiful, as two characters supported the other during a difficult time, alternating who needed support and who was supported. Both women were dealing with some pretty awful stuff, needing such comfort and care. The intimate scenes were often sweet and gentle (and deliciously naughty at others), something rarely seen in historical fiction. Either a story is completely “sweet” (no intimacy beyond kisses) or completely steamy (often bordering on erotica) in most cases. If the element of the unconventional relationship does not bother you and you enjoy historical romance, it might surprise you how much this book touches your heart as you watch hurting, decent, but unconventional individuals try to make their unique way in a harsh world. Highly recommended.

TRIGGERS: Past sexual assault, nightmares, physical violence

The author sent me KEVIN for an ARC read.
Personally, FFM is not my genre at all and I was a bit hesitant to turn the first page. BUT BUT BUT I was drawn in by the uniqueness and authenticity of the characters. The tension and the storyline kept me captivated. This is a good novel for readers who are comfortable in this genre. Congratulations Marilize.

Although the polyamorous love triangle that defines Kevin would work wonderfully in a contemporary setting, the historical aspect – with the morales, values, and prejudices of the era – gives it added poignancy, transforming a bold love into something truly brave.

What makes this such a wonderful read is the depth of the characters and the complexity of their shared relationship. Despite his rakish past and indiscretions, Kevin is a decent man who stands by his word. Alicia and Isobel are two of those indiscretions, one of whom he’s forced to marry after ruining her reputation, the other of whom he should have married after getting her pregnant. Alicia is a strong woman who is secretly damaged, afraid to be loved, and even more afraid to be intimate, while Isobel refuses to see herself as damaged, eager to be loved but reluctant to be intimate for different reasons.

It is Alicia who brings the three of them together, inviting her husband’s mistress to share their home – and, ultimately, his affections. She sees it as a perfect solution, freeing her of wifely duties while allowing him to care for the mother of his child . . . but it is Isobel who makes the three of them work, inviting her lover’s wife to share their bed. It’s the unexpected intimacy between the two women that transforms the relationship, and society’s disapproval only heightens the emotional bonds.

For all the romance, there is a lot of darkness to the story, a lot of pain and sorrow behind the love. Alicia’s story is a tragic one, and understanding why she struggles so much to accept Kevin’s affections is key to the whole story – and leads to a moment so beautiful that I sobbed. There’s darkness to Isobel’s story as well, and the whole book pivots on the confrontation between her father and Kevin.

An entirely unorthodox romance, Kevin works because of the way Marilize Roos juxtaposes the emotional elements within the historical setting. There are so many little moments where this could have so easily shifted into a safer, more standard romance, but in taking the difficult route she makes of it something beautiful.
