Could there possibly be a dumber premise for a novel than Halo by R.C. Stephens? I think not. I was going to toss it on the DNF pile but decided I had to finish it because I couldn’t imagine that the ‘big reveal’ could possibly be what I thought; no that would be way too stupid, right? No author in their right mind would come up with as far-fetched a story as this one and expect readers to actually buy into it. I’m not going to rehash the whole monotonous plot because many other reviewers have already done that. Please explain to me how on earth

Another issue I had with this book were the sex scenes. The author paints Halo as a sweet innocent 15 year old who presumably hasn’t had any sexual experience yet she’s somehow able to perform oral sex with the skills of a porn star. It’s written as if it’s supposed to be a sweet love story, yet the author throws in scenes of Halo having ‘rough sex’ with Ryder. I felt that this was just thrown in for shock value since most new adult romances include explicit sex scenes and it didn’t go with the story at all.

Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time on this moronic story.

Halo by RC Stephens
3.5 stars!!!

“How can she really fall for someone she doesn’t truly know? How can I even like myself when I don’t know who I am.”

Halo was not what I was expecting, this was my first read by this author and I was attracted to the cover and the synopsis in the first instance. It is hard to say what I thought it was going to be, but this wasn’t it, if that makes sense, but it is unexpected in a good way.

Halo and Thomas were childhood sweethearts. They met in their teens and their relationship was not taken well by Halo’s parents. Thomas was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, but he was a good kid. He had a tough home life, his dad was an alcoholic and Thomas bore the brunt of his violent outbursts both emotionally and physically. Thomas was biding his time though, he just wanted to get the hell out of there and the Navy Seals were his ambition and his golden ticket.

“I will always come back to you, Halo, even in the dark I will find you. You are my Halo.”

Halo was the normality in Thomas’s life, she gave him a reason to wake up in the morning and they were truly inseparable. Their relationships goes from strength to strength and they marry young. Halo and Thomas had that soul deep connection, first love at its most powerful, a forever love. Thomas has many deep rooted issues, mainly born from the abuse at the hand of his dad, he feels that he is unlovable and not worthy of love in any shape or form and it is these insecurities that cause the most issues between them. That and the then effects of Thomas being in a war zone.

Thomas leaves Halo after a particularly horrific tour of duty and her landing the news on him that she was pregnant was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Now alone and pregnant Halo is on the brink of giving birth when this book starts and their past is filtered through with flashbacks and as the story progresses you finally begin to try and understand Thomas’s actions and the lasting effects they have on Halo as a person.

After giving birth in the hospital Halo comes across an injured veteran called Ryder that has been in and out of various hospitals over the past four months. He not only has physical injuries but has amnesia too, he was divorced and had no family so once he was released he had nowhere to go. Struggling for money, Halo offers him her garage apartment to rent.

Both loving the company and becoming extremely comfortable around each other the lines of friendship do eventually get a little blurry. Ryder though is struggling to take the next step because how can he offer Halo himself completely when he doesn’t know himself who he is. Halo struggles to take that next step because the pain of Thomas divorcing her is still raw and she is unsure if she has a heart to give.

“We are in a complicated situation with our pasts dictating our present.”

Of course, the path to true love never runs smoothly and as Ryder begins to remember snippets, will something from his past rock their future? I loved everything about this book but I have to say I have huge reservations about the feasibility of the plot twist that the author delivers. I can see that she has covered her bases extremely well but there is one point that is not addressed that in my opinion would have been a huge giveaway, so while I enjoyed the twist I always had it in the back of my mind that I didn’t believe it and that took something away from the impact.

Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed it and despite my reservations I was championing these two along from the start. As I said, RC Stephens is a new to me author and one that I will be definitely checking out again.

I was so intrigued with this book and couldn't put it down once I started.

Halo and Thomas meet when she was 15 and he was 17. From the start, he was the bad boy who only had eyes for the shy and innocent Halo. When Halo's parents get killed in a car accident, Thomas steps up to take care of Halo and becomes her everything. But she knew from the start that Thomas was ready to leave... he was enlisting to become a Navy Seal. It was always a part of the plan and she was ok with that.

The years of deployment and being on the front lines has taken a toll on Halo and Thomas. And one day she finds that he's no longer coming home... just when she needs him the most.

This book is full of sorrow, pain, redemption, mystery and surprises. It was a true page turner for me.

One of my top reads of 2016.

Ugh. I had such high hopes for this book. Every military/navy/marine /whatever armed force it's called story I've read had me bawling my eyes out. This one...meh, not even close. Why? Because it's so damn predictable. I knew the twist right away when I reached just the 2nd chapter. It was so freaking obvious I wondered about the IQ level of the female MC.

And the dialogue. Oh my God don't even get me started on the amount of cheese on it, it would be able to satisfy the pizza consumption of the whole USA.

*deep, regretful sigh* What a waste.

What can I say about this EPIC book from RC Stephens? Well, to start off...I absolutely LOVED it!! The story of Halo and Thomas's romance was gripping, intensely emotional and soul-searingly unforgettable!

Halo meets Thomas, the love of her life at 16, but she knew from the beginning that his dream was to become a Navy Seal. Years later, they are married and Thomas has been to war, seen and done many things that mess him up totally...so much so that when Halo tells him she's going to have his baby, he completely loses it and leaves, back to active duty without a word to his loving wife! When Halo finds herself alone, having a baby on her own, she meets someone who will change her life forever! Enter Ryder, an ex-Seal who was badly wounded a world away, who just happens to be at the same hospital as Halo!

The friendship between Halo and Ryder develops quickly, and before long, things start heating up....but they BOTH have major emotional baggage that needs to be resolved before they can ever further the relationship! The explosive revelations that unfold had me on the edge of my seat, literally shaking my kindle and yelling!!! The intense roller coaster ride that ends this incredible book makes Halo one of my top MUST reads of 2016! Did I mention the crazy HOT chemistry between Halo and Ryder? Well, you'll just have to read it and find out for yourself!

I really enjoyed this book! It's safe and very cute yet emotional as well.

But I would have liked her to make thomas work for his forgiveness... What he did was horrible in my eyes and I think she should've told him the troubles she went through, and he should've suffered more for his actions

“I will always love you. You are the light in my darkness”

4 stars

I was intrigued by the blurb of this book when I first read it, the beginning hooked me in, and I was completely caught up in the heart-felt journey of these characters.

Halo and Thomas were teenage sweethearts. Her home life was loving and supportive, whereas his was violent and desperate, yet they connected instantly and fell in soul-deep love, determined to be together forever. They survived disapproving parents, loss and devastation, and years later they married and Thomas fulfilled his life-long dream of becoming a Navy SEAL and fighting for his country.

Years later, again, and Halo is on her own, pregnant and divorced after Thomas survived a deadly attack, lost himself to PTSD and sent her divorce papers from Afghanistan. It is in hospital after giving birth to their child that she meets Ryder St. John.

Ryder is a soldier on medical leave after being brutally burned and scarred. He has no memory of who he is, or his former life and is facing a long-term hospital stay at the VA until Halo steps in. The two of them talk and share with each other, and when he is due to be discharged she offers him her garage apartment to stay in, which he gratefully accepts. Her friends tell her she is crazy, she knows she is crazy, but she is lonely and grieving for Thomas, and Ryder is lonely and trying to figure out his life. The two of them share a bond that draws them together and they lean on each other, enjoying the comfort they bring to each other and growing closer each day.

We are in a complicated position with our pasts dictating our present.

There are feelings there, but Ryder respectfully keeps his distance from the heartbroken single mother while Halo is trying to move on from the past and go on with her life. It’s a slow burn and a beautifully developing relationship as these two lost souls find solace in each other and fall hard.

We may not have a past to share but we have a future we can create.

But Ryder’s life is a whole jumble of secrets. The only thing that is solid in his life are his feelings for Halo. He knows he wants a future with her, and he is determined to be a man who is worthy of her, and he is absolutely beautiful about it.

“When I say the words, you’ll want them coming from a man who is whole. A man who knows who he is and what he wants. I’m trying to get there.”

But just when it seems that they are poised to finally take that step, their whole world shifts in a way that neither of them ever saw coming.

You’re my halo. I will find my way back to you even in the darkness.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved Halo and Ryder as characters, I could empathise with what they were going through, and I was invested in their journeys individually, and as a couple. The romance was really sweet with lots of emotion and a nice amount of sexy time, and the added intensity of everything that was going on in their lives tied into the story really well. Parts of this book had me clutching my kindle with excited anticipation just waiting for it all to unfold, and I was really happy with the way it all played out. I finished it with a big grin on my face.

This is my first read by R.C. Stephens, and I’m definitely looking forward to checking out more of her work.

4 stars.

RC Stephens is on a roll with another great book... Halo is the second book I've read of hers. The first was Dick and I loved it as well. What I have learned about RC in these two books is that she writes unexpected love stories with very atypical storylines. All of her characters feel pure, loveable and definitely relatable. Halo, Thomas and Ryder's story is both heartbreaking and wondrous! Halo is about a once in a life time love, that was found twice. It will make you believe in the power of true love and soul mates.

Halo & Thomas met and married at a very young age. He had a horrible childhood with parents who neglected and abused him. He never felt worthy of anything especially Halo's love. He always knew he wanted to be a Navy Seal to prove his worth to everyone including himself. He succeeded and was shipped off to fight in the war. Always swearing to come back to Halo. Omg how these kids loved each other!! Their love took my breath away.... But we soon find out, life with a husband in the military is not easy and the life of a soldier is even harder. Poor Thomas. The events that happen to them are horrible. It literally ripped them apart... leaving Halo a shell of herself, alone, pregnant and divorced!!

In comes a knight and shining armor.... Ryder St. John. He meets Halo in the hospital after the birth of her son... Ryder is a broken solider himself. Healing from war wounds. Him & Halo have an instant undeniable connection... But can Halo move on with Ryder? Can she forget her love for Thomas? is it possible to have two soulmates?? My heart ached for all of them!!
This story had me flipping the pages. I totally gobbled it up. It's that good!

Carla's Five Star Review

Wow! This book is simply phenomenal and a much needed breath of fresh air!

Thomas Wells' life has been anything but easy. His mother walked out when he was just a toddler and left him with his abusive, alcoholic father. With every slap and every curse, Thomas became more determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL. What he didn't plan for was to meet the love of his life, Halo, at just 17. She was his light in the darkness. Fast forward a few years, the two are happily married, and the time has finally come for his deployment. Halo thinks their love is strong enough to overcome anything, but war has a way of changing a person. With each deployment, Thomas seems to lose more and more of himself. When Halo reveals some life changing news, it pushes Thomas over the edge, and he leaves for good. Halo is devastated and forced to face her future alone. Until him. Ryder St. John is a wounded soldier with no memory of his past. For reasons she can't explain, Halo is drawn to Ryder and wants to help him. The two become friends, and after spending more and more time together, their feelings for one another grow. However, when Ryder's Memory comes back and his past is revealed, Halo's world is rocked to it's core once again.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved this book! With so many "cookie cutter" books being published today, it was so enjoyable to read a story that is truly in a league of it's own! The story line is fluid, and the characters are extremely well developed. If you are looking for a love story like no other you've read before, this is definitely the book for you!

I fell in love with the writing in this book. You can feel the emotion come out from each page, I was hooked from the first page.

Halo and Thomas met a swim meet when she was 15 & he was 17 and, practically became inseparable. He was from the wrong part of town with a chip on his shoulder due to a terrible childhood who wants to prove he is something and dreams of becoming a Navy Seal. Halo is the sweet & shy girl who always saw how special Thomas was regardless of his need to prove his worth. He truly was the king of her world. There love was undeniable & strong. Thomas literally helped Halo survive after her parents died & put his plans on hold until she was strong.

Unfortunately for them the war and scars Thomas is dealing with years later along with a horrible case of PTSD tear them apart when Thomas just up and leaves Halo.

I loved Halo, she was strong, loving, caring & was a fierce protector of her loved ones.

Thomas was sweet, loving & loyal but, so incredibly broken.

Ryder was confident, caring but confused due to his amnesia.

This book was told in the POV of Halo, Thomas & Ryder which I love. I'm not a fan of single person POV, I like knowing what the other person is thinking too.

This book has a twist at about 65% that will leave you speechless. I cried like a baby throughout the last 40% of this book.

This book was such a strong love story, but more importantly it also brings to light very strongly how the men and women who risk their lives for our safety and freedom deal with. They live in the dark so we can live in the light. That's what made me cry the most, the raw emotion of this book!!

I was gifted a copy of this book for a honest review

I’m going to start this spoiler-free review by saying that I really don’t want to give away anything about this story at all, so there will be no quotes, no teasers, no discussions of the plot or the characters in this review. My instincts just told me that it would be best to experience Halo organically, so I was careful to avoid anything with spoilers. I’m glad I did, and I believe it’s how I think everyone should approach this particular story.

Halo story hooked me from the very beginning. This story was so emotional and gripping, there were times where I had a hard time putting it down. I love reading stories about young love, and this is one of the great ones. But it’s so much more than that, too. It’s a story of life’s challenges and painful real-world realities and rising up to overcome them. My heart often physically ached for these characters, and I found my emotions swinging from gut-wrenching devastation to heart-racing elation. The story was exciting, riveting, fresh, and I was positively enthralled by it. It was so uplifting and hopeful in parts yet heart-breaking and gut-churning in others. Stephens seriously ran me through the emotional wringer here, but in the best possible way.

This is the first novel I’ve read by R.C. Stephens, but it won’t be the last. I was impressed! Well written, interesting, emotional and sexy, this is not a story that I will soon forget. I’m taking an entirely new respect for military families and spouses away from this reading experience. Halo is unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and I’m looking forward to reading more from R.C. Stephens in the future. Five smooches from me!

Halo by RC Stephens reinforces the power of love in the reader's mind. I was intrigued when I read the blurb and could not wait to read Halo. I think I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for a "bad boy" with a terrible home life, since they mirror my husband's upbringing. Thomas' mother left when he was young and his father treated him cruelly. If not for a gentle neighbor, his future could have been nonexistent. His dream was to become a Navy SEAL, however when he met Halo this dream was delayed. Once he supported her through a devastating loss, he enlisted and left on deployment. Each time he returned Thomas struggled with what he'd seen, but the last deployment changed him completely. What should have been joyous news chased him from his life with Halo, and she faced her future without him.
Months later, she meets a battle scarred veteran who is in need of help. After realizing that Thomas may never come back, Halo risks her heart by trying to move forward with Ryder. As his injuries heal, he battles amnesia and tries to remember his past, while Halo tries to forget hers. The twist of the story is surprising and heartbreaking, as well as giving credence to the power of love. I enjoy Ms. Stephens' writing and the level of character development. The story is well written and original. I have not read anything similar and highly recommend this book.

My first experience with R.C. Stephens and just ... WOW. I can't really tell you what specific characteristic of this book/story stood out and wow'd me because it all was captivating and intriguing. This is not just a romantic journey story. It's a story of growth and family and friendship, first love, soulmates, second chances and redemption and life ... and every one of those aspects is what drew me in and kept me going, reading this in one sitting.

As you know from the blurb there is a huge revelation that comes to light in this book. Well, let me tell you, huge doesn't even begin to give it justice LOL When I say edge of your seat, what the what I really mean it. But the book isn't really focused on that. That's just a twist, imo. The focus is more the journeys and growths and redemptions. And it was so beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time. I can't say that this story gave me anxiety because it just had too much heart in it for that. It actually put a huge smile on my face because in the end, life and love #win :)

Okay this book was so predictable except for the twist which was predictable PLUS ludicrous. There are a couple of good reviews that explain the ridiculousness so I won’t go into it in detail. Suffice it to say, there is no way you wouldn’t recognize your husband in the case as presented. Hmm, maybe this author is not for me.

Ughhhh Cried a bucket over this!

A real tear jerker, yup I cried a bucket of this one. What are the odds that you lost the love of your life and he still manage to find his way back to you. I think this is a very lovely story....can be a movie. Hollywood pay attention, this one is good piece! Love the characters. Halo had the best of his man as a young woman in Thomas and as an adult in Ryder. Souls mates will always find their way back to each other. Such a wonderful story.

"I will always come back to you, Halo, even in the dark I will find you. You are my Halo."

Halo is the second book I have read by RC Stephens, Dick being the first I loved both of them.
This is the story of Halo and Thomas, two people from complete opposite sides of the tracks, who meet at a young age, and fell in love. Their love is like no another, a love that is pure and unbreakable. A true testament of what a soul mate is. Halo is emotional, gripping, romantic, and truly a beautiful love story. A second chance at love.

Halo and Thomas met in school, she was 15 and he 17. They form a friendship instantly and she's made aware from the very beginning that Thomas's dream is to become a Navy Seal. Soon that friendship turns romantic and the two are inseparable. Halo knows that Thomas had a horrific childhood, parents who neglected and abused him. She feels the need to be there for him through the good and bad times. Thomas doesn't feel worthy to have the love of a woman who is so pure, as an angel.
A couple of years later they marry everything seems to be perfect, until Halo suffers a devastating loss and everything is put on hold including Thomas being deployed. He stays to support her through this. Once he knows Halo is okay he enlist and is deployed.

Thomas has been through hell literally, from his upbringing, to his time in the war. The things he has seen and done are enough to break any man including Thomas. He's made a promise to Halo that he will always come back to her. But the times he does come back he's a changed man, and soon enough Thomas falls so deep into the hole, leaving poor Halo alone, scared, pregnant and divorced. It was heartbreaking to watch these events unfold right before my eyes.

Ryder St. John, is a broken wounded solider himself. He meets Halo at the hospital after the birth of her child. Halo and Ryder instantly feel a connection to one another, one that has them questing so much. Can Halo move forward with her life and leave Thomas in the past, and except Ryder has her future? So many questions and revelations that unfold from this story will leaving you gasping.
Buckle up because it's a roller coaster of a ride!

Halo

What a book .... Meeting the love of her life at sweet sixteen Halo vowed to support Thomas in all his dreams. As big as they were being a Navy Seal she knew came with hard times. Sticking by the man she has loved she knows the way has changed him. Thinking a child is going to help him heal she instead gets a reaction that no woman wants to hear.

Thomas has had a gray life. His mother left leaving him with a father that was abusive and drank too much. Turning those emotions into determination Thomas knows he can make it as a Seal. The path of his dream comes to a crossroad when he meets Halo. Giving him more determination and more will he reaches his destination. Coming home should have been easy .. instead it destroyed him and the woman he loved.

Ryder is damaged. His past is blurry. His war was hell. But the vision standing in front of him may help him find his way. Ryder has never met anyone as beautiful as Halo. He will do everything in his power to try and remember – the only problem is – Halo wants to forget.

Finding your way has never been more difficult and wow if these characters arent just an amazing example. There of course numerous situations that are sometimes uneasy in the story and some let will leave you saying just do it ... I promise you this is worth the read. Of course you know from where I left the characters for you there is going to be some major pitfalls.

Some of the story is “real” in the sense that I have seen it happen to loved ones on both sides. Healing after the war is never easy and sometimes the men and women who serve lose that battle. This book -- Fiction yes -- but certainly glimpses of true heartbreak for those of us in the military community.

I loved the story, loved the characters and loved diving into this one. Thank you R. C. for the read. I look forward to getting my hands on more of your books! Excellent choice but plan on some tears.

Halo Pearson fell in love with Thomas Well, knowing he was her forever. At sixteen, she gave him her heart, and they were married young. Thomas becomes a Navy SEAL, and after his first tour, he comes home broken, while refusing to let anyone in. After she tells him that she's pregnant, he leaves her, and goes back to the war with no goodbye. Then divorce papers show up, and Halo's heart is broken, but having her baby keeps her from really breaking down. The night she goes into labor, she takes a cab to the hospital, and when things go south during labor, she has to have a C-Section. She meets wounded soldier, Ryder St. John, when she's going rogue to see her baby, and passes out in front of him. A friendship is born from that moment on. As they spend more time together, she finds herself falling for him. But he has a secret that he doesn't know is a ticking time bomb. Can she survive the aftermath when it's revealed?!

WOW! WHAT A DRAMATIC GIRLY GIRL EMOTION FILLED STORY! I honestly have a huge book hangover like I haven't had for a while now. The character development is great, with a cast of entertaining secondaries. So I'm not sure as to where to go from here, because I'm teetering on throwing spoilers everywhere. R.C. Stephens is one of my favorite authors, but boy did she outdo herself this time! Her brilliant writing style had me side by side with Halo, so all of her emotions were physically mine as well. Diabolical twists and turns swirled around, to the point of EPIC OMG moments that came out of left field. I can't stress enough that this story is highly original in it's content/plotline, plus some well placed humor had me rolling in laughter. So yeah, this review may just be a fan girl gushing letter to the author, but again, do you want me to give away the awesome?! Bottom line, I'm HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY and yes, HIGHLY RECOMMENDING Halo to EVERYONE!

Good Read, Great Twist!

The blurb instantly attracted me to this book and boy, it wasn't anything I imagined it to be. Halo was a book of surprises from beginning until the end. We travel from past to present and back again getting the full effect of what the past has done to the present life of both Thomas and Halo.

Halo (the name grew on me) met the love of her life at sixteen and lost him a few years later. Actually, they were both a little lost when they met, however as they got older, the problems got to be more difficult. Thomas had a dream of proving his worthless father wrong and becoming somebody. Getting out of the hell hole he called home. He focused on the Navy SEALS and stopped at nothing, well almost nothing, to get himself there.

She knew it was his dream, so she let him go. After a couple of tours, Thomas came back to Halo a different man. And then finally, didn't come home at all. She is a forgiving woman, more so than I would be. Halo knew with the memories of his childhood that plagued him, coupled with the sights of war, Thomas needed time to find himself again. Leaving her alone with a baby.

Enter Ryder St. John. Perfect guy at the perfect time. Talk about upping the angst once this guy enters the picture. I couldn't finish the book fast enough to see if and when that other shoe was going to drop. Mean, I know.

The book is well written from various points of view. Along with Halo, Thomas and Ryder, we get a nice handful of characters to keep things exciting. I kept watching the percentage waiting for that dreaded cliffhanger that luckily never came. Instead, we get a little epilogue to tie up any lose ends.

Halo by Author R. C. Stephens is a new, standalone, contemporary romance novel. It is a second chance at love story.

"You're my Halo, my ray of light. I will always find my way back to you."

When Halo first laid eyes on Thomas, a spark was generated. That spark grew into so much more, leading to love and marriage. Thomas knew Halo was the one for him, and he wasn't letting her go. Though young, they had a love that was everlasting, or so it seemed.

"I will always love you. You are the light in my darkness."

I am really torn in my review of this book. The story line itself was very interesting and held my attention. However, in the first third of the story, the dialogue was awkward at times, which made it hard for me to stay connected with the characters. I didn't have that same struggle in the last two-thirds of the book. The words flowed with more fluidity, and I found myself wrapped up in the lives of the characters, living each part of sadness, delight, confusion, frustration, and surprise. The ending was redemptive and so special.

This is the first time I have read any of this authors work, and my word, it will not be the last. Halo and Thomas met and fell in love as teenagers, and they always knew that they were soul mates, and their love would last forever. Thomas had an awful childhood, and his dream was to become a navy seal. After each deployment he changed as things he has seen and done haunted him. When Halo tells him she is pregnant he runs, and sends divorce papers. While in hospital Halo meets Ryder who is an ex seal, and has been badly wounded in the war. A friendship and connection develops between these two.
This is a beautifully written storyline, which flows seamlessly. This is an emotional, heartfelt, heartbreaking, unpredictable, epic, love story. I can honestly say that this is one of those books which remain with you well after it is finished. This author has done a phenomenal job with this book, and I for one cannot wait to read more of her work. I recommend this author for all readers.
