Did anyone ever understand Christoph Schlingensief?
He started out in Germany as this guy who made strange indie movies like DAS DEUTSCHE KETTENSAEGENMASSAKER (The German Chainsaw Massacre), on how a West German family of cannibals hunts East Germans for meat ('they came as friends and became sausages'), then moved on to confronting TV and art projects (Auslaender raus!, in which asylum seekers are put through something like Big Brother, those who are voted out have to leave the country), and finally moved into theater, being allowed to stage some very big projects like Parsifal or the Wagner Festspiele, before he died way too young of cancer.
He was always the 'shock' guy in the German cultural landscape, but that reduces his work to nothing, there's much more to find there. This book helped me figure him out a little bit better. It's a bucket of interviews with Schlingensief, chronologically sorted, from the early indie movie phase all the way to dying of cancer.
It's fun to see how unique Schlingensief was. For example,

There's much more in this book, his views on Christianity as a convinced catholic, his disdain for modern German culture and the cultural complex of Germany, German modern politics, criticism, the role of the artist in society... a lot to chew on. And a few interviews that are just plain weird.

Man hat mir einen Weg aufgezwungen, indem meine Eltern gesagt haben, wir wollen ein Kind. Jetzt laufe ich hier durch die Gegend, und das kann ich nur ertragen, wenn ich Erfahrungen sammle. Ich kann nur jedem zurufen, das Recht einzuklagen, eigene Erfahrungen zu machen und sich nicht funktionalisieren zu lassen. Ich will nicht funktionieren; ich habe ein paarmal versucht, das zu verhindern, und habe gemerkt, dass ich dann an der Welt keinen Spaß mehr habe.

I was forced to walk this way when my parents said, we want a child. Now I run through the area and I can only stand this running when I collect experiences. I can only suggest to everyone to fight for your right to make experiences, and to not let themselves be instrumentalised/functionalised. I do not want to function; I tried a few times, to stop this, and I realised that in these cases, I stop enjoying the world.
