He has lectured and taught courses at several universities, including Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, Harvard and Columbia, and collaborated on many art exhibitions in France and Italy. He is the author of numerous books translated into several languages, including The Life of Plants (2018). He is a columnist for Libération and collaborates with Le Monde and La Repubblica. He is currently writing a book on the relationship between fashion and philosophy with Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele.

To my great shame, I'm without any botanical knowledge, and I'm certainly lacking any appreciation for the relevant contemporary debates, so I'm unsure where to situate myself in relation to Coccia's work, or how to grasp it as an intervention; as the title suggest it's a metaphysical text of some form, and how it might offer grounds for articulating a new direction in socio-political thought or philosophy of science is somewhat obscure. I'll have to take Coccia on his word that he is responding to a chronic marginalisation of plant-life within biology, and is thus attempting to overcome the epistemological and conceptual deficit that this has left; and we'll have to have faith in provocations like 'the plant and its structure can be explained by cosmology much better than botany.' His framework and desire to renew spatial and systemic thinking is appealing enough, however, and his attempt to expand how plants - roots, leaves and flowers primarily - enable a transformation in our understandings of immersion, 'breath', atmosphere, inter-reliance, immanence and transcendence, is surpisingly clear (if not vague in what this revolution might actually amount to).
Much of the writing is parsed through a deeply Heideggerian language, although he's evidently trying to push up against, and beyond, this particular dwelling-thought - plant living is 'the most intense, radical and paradigmatic form of being in the world' - and draws on a range of stimuli which are impressively vast given the short length of the book. Yet, Coccia's attempt to survey and interrogate millenia of thought relating to plant-life and natural ecological thinking is perhaps too ambitious, as a result of its brevity, as the assemblage style of writing and rapid bibliographic exposition results in an under-contextualisation.
The merits of the book lie perhaps first in his dual commitment to an anti-anthropomorphism - 'Reason is a flower: there was no need to wait for humans or higher animals for the technical force of fashioning the matter to become an individual faculty.' - and a releated form of anti-'anthropocenic' thinking. Coccia's potentially novel (at least to me) materialism forces a re-theorising of the temporality of world-shaping, the bounds of agency and rationality, and the limits or paradoxes of our attempts to capture 'nature' in techno-scientific discourses. His restraint in deploying the elements of plant-life as an all-encompassing framework for metaphors is also appreciated; the early sections of the book stick to exploring directly his account of plant ontology, while the eventual movement to sociological reflection is welcomed given the extent of previous discussions lacking explicit socio-political content (although are easily read as such).
Each section might work quite convincingly as stand-alone short essays - although one's tolerance for the aphoristic and mystic-adjacent prose might be tested - but all tend toward forming a general disposition of thinking and style; Coccia's final meditations on the University, in particular, could work independently from the prior chapters, but when read in relation to the preceeding sections, his (not so novel, but well-expressed) critique of academe is an effective final flourish for Coccia's plea toward leaves, roots and flowers. I've limited my rating to three stars as although an engaging, and engaged, work of philosophy (whatever that might constitute for Coccia given that for him, 'Philosophy is knowledge under the empire of Eros, the most undisciplined and rugged of all gods'.), The Life of Plants hasn't fully convinced me of its project, and it appears perhaps too much as a manifesto for future work than a fully-formed expression of Coccia's metaphysics of mixture.
(Extra note: despite its internal nods to Tsing's Mushroom book, and Latour's comparison in his blurbage, I think making them parallel texts is too obvious and fails to reveal much about either work, while blinding the reader from the substantial divergences in tone, sources and implications.)

Hieno hieno hieno. Niin kaunis, syvä kirja universumista ja sen toisinajattelusta. Rakastan ajatusta siitä, miten sekaisin tästä kirjasta voikaan mennä, jos rakastaa taksonomioita, rajoja, kuria ja maailman ahtamista kapeisiin, ymmärrettäviin laatikoihin, jotka eivät kuitenkaan vastaa sitä pulppuavaa, suurta, mahtavaa, kaunista, outoa ja ihanaa elämää, jota ympärillämme rönsyää, yritämme miten tahansa kurittaa sitä.

An intriguing read. These are my take-aways:
Philosophy has long posited nature against humans. This has to do with the specialisation into disciplines. The author Emanuele Coccia says that specialists are trapped within rules and are prohibited from certain subjects. The humanities don't deal with the sciences.
Nature is not about the evolution of the fittest and it is not about finding niches in order to minimise competition. Life is not about competition. Life is a network.
We are immersed in the atmosphere. Life originated in water and is not possible without water. The ocean is the default environment. Plants imported the ocean environment onto the land.
Plants created the world that they need. In living, they created. This happened when they oxygenated our planet and created the atmosphere that most organisms need to live.
Roots are the connection to the sun. People are geotropes but we should be heliotropes. The earth is not the centre, nor is the human (there is a footnote critiquing the concept of the 'anthropocene'), but the sun creates life via plants' photosynthesis. 'Every organic connection is ... a result of the influence of solar energy that has been captured by the plants and changed into ... living matter.' (p.119)
Thinking in terms of objects and subjects is misleading. Living beings interpenetrate each other and create each others' habitats. The fish is the paradigmatic life form: moving through water, water flowing through it.
The weakest chapter was the one on blossoms. Emanuele Coccia is a man. He says blossoms are reason and blossoms are sex. He unthinkingly equates reproduction with heterosexual sex. He also talks of scholars over the centuries as being 'people' but we know that 'scholars' before the 20th century were almost all not 'people' but 'male people'.
Format: I read the German paperback, translated from the French by Elsbeth Franke. Original title: La vie des plantes: Une métaphysique du mélange (2016). Hanser Verlag is a nice publisher: pleasantly smooth pages, pages lie flat, lots of white space makes reading pleasant.

Non vorrei dire troppo sul contenuto del libro. Esprimo semplificando solo alcuni pensieri in modo da avere un risultato abbastanza organico a mio uso e consumo.
Invito in ogni caso a leggerlo perché è piuttosto complesso e articolato e la mia misera focalizzazione non è sufficiente.
E' un libro che bisognerebbe leggere al contrario, partendo dagli ultimi capitoli per risalire ai primi.
In particolare nel penultimo si sottolinea come la conoscenza sia stata suddivisa in corporazioni corrispondenti alle discipline già dall'inizio della sua istituzione universitaria in cui, se studi un oggetto, non devi occuparti di altri e parlare solo di ciò che ti compete.
Questa è già una grossa limitazione per provare a capire le interconnessioni che gli oggetti di studio hanno gli uni con gli altri. Tutto è in relazione con tutto.
Nell'ultimo si afferma che la Filosofia deve potersi occupare di tutto, come era in origine, cioè della Fisica nella sua accezione più ampia e non speculativa, per cercare di capire soprattutto le relazioni fra le cose.
Messi quelli sopra come punti fermi, allora si potrebbe passare allo studio dei vegetali e del loro ambiente, sia aereo con l'atmosfera, sia terrestre con l'occupazione reticolare delle loro radici.
Qui si tratta, sia la loro funzionalità biologica che conosciamo, sia quella cognitiva espressione di una particolare intelligenza (razionalità del seme) che è in stretta relazione con l'ambiente (pensa in grande) con cui c'è uno scambio reciproco che determina un continuo rimescolamento dinamico. Basti pensare alla produzione di ossigeno, ma visualizzare la formula O2 è limitativo.
Ecco, a me sembra che, anche se non esplicitato nel testo, si recuperino alcune visioni delle pratiche orientali in cui il soggetto, specialmente attraverso la meditazione, ritrovi questa identità relazionale con l'universo che, invece, la cultura occidentale ha abbandonato per la parcellizzazione e specializzazione dei suoi componenti, perdendo il sentimento di unità con l'ambiente.
Lo stesso autore ci dice che siamo ancora troppo legati al geocentrismo, mentre dovremmo avere una visione più ampia e dotarci di una concezione eliocentrica, perché è proprio dal sole che le piante prendono energia, la incamerano e restituiscono il mondo che LORO creano, nel quale viviamo noi e gli altri organismi.

A rambling philosophy of plant-life which forms an important reevaluation of the position of plants in our appreciation of biology. Emanuele's case for flora and fauna is a generous and heartfelt read but lacks focus and a certain tangibility. There are no hands in dirt in this love affair, more so someone observing their gardener through a conservatory window and waxing lyrical.

Ai että, rakastin lukea tätä oikein rauhallisesti ja keskittyen. Viehättää moni asia, etenkin kasvit, filosofia ja totunnaisen purkaminen atomeiksi, tai ehkä Coccian sanoin universaaliksi kanssahengityksen salaliitoksi, minkä lävistämme ja mikä lävistää meidät joka hetki ja jokaisessa hengityksessä. Loppupuolella aloin nähdä tekstin ikään kuin buddhalaisen filosofian aukikirjoituksena ilman buddhalaisuuden mainitsemista sanallakaan.

Um dos livros mais bonitos que li neste ano. Coincidentemente, a leitura se deu por conta de um trabalho que apresentarei em alguns dias, em um momento muito ruim para a vida das plantas, especialmente no Brasil, neste mês em que a Floresta Amazônica arde em chamas e fica cada vez mais perto de um "final" irreversível.
Apesar das desgraças neoliberais, o ensaio de Coccia consegue trazer uma certa esperança para pensarmos no que ele chama de "metafísica da mistura", pensarmos na nova astrologia por ele proposta, uma vez que moramos em um astro e tudo o que não é a Terra, é céu. Acho que o livro tem uma importância muito grande para mudarmos nossos pensamentos antropocêntricos e aprender que não somos os únicos seres "inteligentes" da Terra, ou melhor, do Céu.
Apesar das desgraças neoliberais, o ensaio de Coccia consegue trazer uma certa esperança para pensarmos no que ele chama de "metafísica da mistura", pensarmos na nova astrologia por ele proposta, uma vez que moramos em um astro e tudo o que não é a Terra, é céu. Acho que o livro tem uma importância muito grande para mudarmos nossos pensamentos antropocêntricos e aprender que não somos os únicos seres "inteligentes" da Terra, ou melhor, do Céu.

Não tinha livro melhor para começar 2023. Uma cosmologia vegetal, uma reformulaçao do antropoceno, uma reinvenção do estar-no-mundo, uma retomada da filosofia como indomável curiosidade, como um redemoinho de ideias que se entrecruzam... livro genial.

Emanuele Coccian Kasvien elämä on kolmen esseemäisen kokonaisuuden muodostama metafyysinen esitys lehdistä, juurista ja kukista. Kukin kertoo vuorollaan jotain olennaista siitä miten meidän tulisi hahmottaa oleminen. Vahvasti Heideggerin ajattelulle pohjaava Coccia parantelee H:n ajatuksia "uppoamisen metafysiikaksi" ja kaiken fluidiksi yhteydeksi. Kaikki oleva ikään kuin ui kaikessa muussa olevassa.
Kirjalle on vaikea tehdä oikeutta käymättä läpi mitä se sisältää, joten ehkä tyydyin vain lainaamaan Coccian kuvausta siitä miten hän näkee filosofian:

Meu primeiro contato com Emanuele Coccia e com toda a ~~filosofia especulativa~~ em torno do reino Plantae foi na Zona de Contágio. Desde então, tenho buscado lê-lo diretamente, mas só consegui agora. É um pequeno livro, publicado no Brasil pela Cultura e Barbárie, de alta densidade filosófica. Coccia usa a vida das plantas como forma de reinventar a metafísica, não mais a partir da experiência propriamente humana do mundo, mas da experiência vegetal. Uma baita provocação a toda uma metafísica que funda o mundo sobre a experiência cognoscente humana, mas também em relação à virada "animal". Um pensamento que é sopro e raiz, um pensamento atmosférico.

This is a wild book. If you're looking for fresh thinking around botanical philosophy, pick up this one. Coccia really immerses you into the nature of autotrophy, world creation, reason, interaction, and atmosphere. He builds an argument that plants created our world, and a true understanding of our lives in it will benefits from grasping its real foundation. Truly a trip. It's not an easy read- I would recommend it only for those interested in natural philosophy as it takes some commitment to the subject matter to get through.

maybe im being unecessarily harsh here, but i really found this book to be unexciting. there are some interesting thoughts, and at first i did think the author was going somewhere good with it, but no. the insights it does have are either pretty shallow or fairly absurd. an interesting premise and angle, but unconvincing execution. [read the german translation]

Plants show us existence in its simplest form. To breathe is to have this experience of penetrating the world by the same force it penetrates us. The seeds of plants are metaphysical spaces wherein a destiny is defined. And everything is one mixture.

A bunch of nonsense with a veneer of philosophy laid on top. And this coming from someone who was initially sympathetic to the points that Coccia raises in his introduction. But ultimately, this is just a lot of Humpty-Dumptyism employed to bolster a mysticism masquerading as metaphysics.

Posso riassumere il mio giudizio con tre I. Incredibilmente inconsistente e irritante.
Personalmente mi occupo di svolgere ricerca nel campo delle Scienze Biologiche, quindi il mio giudizio è inevitabilmente influenzato dalla mia attività e dal mio campo di interesse specialistico (ma tanto nel libro c'è scritto che non dovremmo ragionare per saperi in quanto corporazioni, per cui...).
L'apparato bibliografico è massiccio per l'esiguità del testo, il che dimostra più che altro che l'autore sia bravo a cercare i riferimenti bibliografici; il resto del testo contiene un paio di concetti interessanti per ciò che potrebbe riguardare un "cambio di paradigma" nell'osservazione della natura da parte dell scienziat , ma più in generale da parte dell'umanità. Non si tratta tuttavia di nulla di particolarmente originale, anzi, mi sembrano messaggi già recepiti soprattutto da chi si occupa di scienza, e mi riferisco principalmente al superamento del concetto di "ambiente" come qualcosa di esclusivamente esterno all'organismo, da esso non influenzato; un ambiente, insomma, che esercita una pressione evolutiva sugli organismi, ma che da essi ne è egualmente plasmato. È il concetto delle "specie ingegnere", citate da Coccia, ma a sua detta poco efficace per descrivere la magnitudine degli effetti degli organismi sull'ambiente, poiché, in realtà, l'organismo È l'ambiente. In effetti questo "nuovo" (ma non è nuovo - "The organism influences its own evolution, by being both the object of natural selection and the creator of the conditions of that selection" Levins & Lewontin, 1985) punto di vista potrebbe avere implicazioni importanti anche solo in una semplice riformulazione del concetto di evoluzione come "survival of the fittest" (è dunque "the fittest" l'organismo più adatto all'ambiente, o magari quello che fa adattare meglio l'ambiente a se stesso? Quello che riesce "meglio" a essere "ambiente di se stesso"?). Tuttavia l'autore preferisce l'argomento della supercazzola dal sapore new age, disseminando il tutto di potenze cosmiche, nature astrali, e non ricordo cos'altro di molto vago ed etereo, piuttosto oscuro, nonché ripetere davvero molte volte il messaggio principale diretto al lettore, ovvero "tutto è in tutto" (quindi senza confini, non circoscritto e senza pattern e quindi basicamente non studiabile dal punto di vista scientifico, ma ok - lo scrivo provocatoriamente, ma di pruriti provocatori me ne ha causati parecchi). Che tutto ciò che sia al di fuori dell'ambiente acquatico riproduca, in sé, le caratteristiche di un piccolo acquario, anche qui, è ciò che i libri di evoluzione chiamano, da tempo, uno dei "major steps in evolution". Intorno al concetto di nicchia, inoltre, si sarebbero potuti fare discorsi molto interessanti. Ma il problema è anche come vengono utilizzati i riferimenti bibliografici, che sembrano siano lì come un menù in cui l'autore sceglie cosa gli piace e cosa no, senza particolari spiegazioni in merito alle critiche e alle prese di posizione, non arricchendo granché l'esperienza di lettura. Ovviamente la struttura poco coerente dello scritto viene giustificata dal fatto che dobbiamo liberarci della scaffalatura troppo rigida del sapere, di legami logici troppo stretti perché "tutto è in tutto" quindi è ok scrivere libri con poca testa e poca coda perché è fluido e che bello olistico sciamani freak pazzesco wow.
Sarò pure troppo influenzata dalla scrittura scientifica, ma almeno i suoi codici si sforzano di essere universali e comprensibili, e non si parlano addosso e basta senza scomodare presunte metafisiche. Il che mi sembra molto più utile, e non da un mero punto di vista utilitaristico, ma nel fornire spunti a chiunque voglia leggere.
Colonna sonora consigliata: The Pescator, Latte e i suoi derivati. Concettualmente siamo lì.
Personalmente mi occupo di svolgere ricerca nel campo delle Scienze Biologiche, quindi il mio giudizio è inevitabilmente influenzato dalla mia attività e dal mio campo di interesse specialistico (ma tanto nel libro c'è scritto che non dovremmo ragionare per saperi in quanto corporazioni, per cui...).
L'apparato bibliografico è massiccio per l'esiguità del testo, il che dimostra più che altro che l'autore sia bravo a cercare i riferimenti bibliografici; il resto del testo contiene un paio di concetti interessanti per ciò che potrebbe riguardare un "cambio di paradigma" nell'osservazione della natura da parte dell scienziat , ma più in generale da parte dell'umanità. Non si tratta tuttavia di nulla di particolarmente originale, anzi, mi sembrano messaggi già recepiti soprattutto da chi si occupa di scienza, e mi riferisco principalmente al superamento del concetto di "ambiente" come qualcosa di esclusivamente esterno all'organismo, da esso non influenzato; un ambiente, insomma, che esercita una pressione evolutiva sugli organismi, ma che da essi ne è egualmente plasmato. È il concetto delle "specie ingegnere", citate da Coccia, ma a sua detta poco efficace per descrivere la magnitudine degli effetti degli organismi sull'ambiente, poiché, in realtà, l'organismo È l'ambiente. In effetti questo "nuovo" (ma non è nuovo - "The organism influences its own evolution, by being both the object of natural selection and the creator of the conditions of that selection" Levins & Lewontin, 1985) punto di vista potrebbe avere implicazioni importanti anche solo in una semplice riformulazione del concetto di evoluzione come "survival of the fittest" (è dunque "the fittest" l'organismo più adatto all'ambiente, o magari quello che fa adattare meglio l'ambiente a se stesso? Quello che riesce "meglio" a essere "ambiente di se stesso"?). Tuttavia l'autore preferisce l'argomento della supercazzola dal sapore new age, disseminando il tutto di potenze cosmiche, nature astrali, e non ricordo cos'altro di molto vago ed etereo, piuttosto oscuro, nonché ripetere davvero molte volte il messaggio principale diretto al lettore, ovvero "tutto è in tutto" (quindi senza confini, non circoscritto e senza pattern e quindi basicamente non studiabile dal punto di vista scientifico, ma ok - lo scrivo provocatoriamente, ma di pruriti provocatori me ne ha causati parecchi). Demasiada metafísica y poca botánica, poca tierra en realidad. Uno no termina de saber desde dónde escribe Coccia, tal vez desde un lugar un tanto impoluto del posmodernismo. Hay tanto que decir al respecto, que esperaba mucho más, un poco de recorrido al menos, la reflexión en torno a las maneras a la sensibilidad en el mundo vegetal, o por lo menos una anotación cotidiana de las especies que nos rodean. Nada de eso.

Questo libro è un piccolo gioiello.
L’avevo acquistato tempo fa e quasi me l’ero dimenticato in biblioteca, poi leggendo un’intervista ad Alessandro Baricco, vedo citato l’autore insieme a Stefano Mancuso, e vado a metterci mano.
Straordinario.
E’ stata una scoperta completamente inaspettata ,proprio perché avendo visto citato quest’autore, che non conoscevo, insieme a Mancuso, che invece conoscevo bene, come brillante divulgatore di botanica ,mi aspettavo qualcosa di simile, allo stile appunto di Mancuso.
Ho trovato tutt’altro ,ma quello che ho trovato mi è piaciuto moltissimo.
Siamo nel campo della più pura e affascinante speculazione filosofica.
Coccia non risparmia strali polemici al vizio moderno dell’ultra-specializzazione ,figlia della classica ripartizione in materie, propria dell’organizzazione universitaria.
Lui, invece, rivendica il ritorno all’approccio che era stato quello del grande pensiero greco, che concepiva la filosofia, come, diremmo oggi, un approccio assolutamente multi-disciplinare, svincolato da ogni classificazione arbitraria e posticcia.
E in questa prospettiva, l’autore si lancia, dimostrando una erudizione veramente invidiabile.

gostei muito da ideia de sopro, o termo "ordem pneumatológica"... incrível.
mas não entendi muito bem a insistência em certos termos como "natureza" e "essência" (dentre outros), mesmo que coccia queira reler esses conceitos por uma ótica outra, que desloca o sentido essencialista. acho que teria sido mais interessante dar outros nomes, mas também entendo que novos nomes às vezes nos fazem esquecer o que aquele termo novo se contrapõe. e também novos conceitos são nomeados toda hora, sei la, é chatice minha! e porque gostei quando ele brincou com as palavras, que nem na "ordem pneumatológica" em vez de "ordem lógica".

“In de beweging, niet in het fundament zit de natuur.”
Deze zin omschrijf ook de opbouw van het boek. Het idee van natuurfilosofie heeft me al lang gefascineerd. Coccia omschrijft in het beeld van de plant de concepten van het blad, de wortel en de bloem, het leven en de immersie.
Interessant dat dit boek weigert “wetenschappelijk” voor te gaan en dit doet door te zeggen dat filosofie een atmosferische toestand is. De titel metafysica is dan misschien ook een beetje te ver. Maar niettemin heb ik er enorm van genoten. Ik had graag nog iets over verbondenheid tussen planten gelezen, dat interesseert mij misschien nog steeds het meest aan deze niche.
Take-aways:
het is niet mens tegen natuur, geest tegen natuur. Het is het In der welt sein, waarvoor je niet terug moet gaan naar de wereld alleen de overgave, de immersie moet accepteren.
Natuur is dus niet het fundament, maar de beweging.
Waarom we zo van dansen in een discotheek houden: dat is een van de weinige keren dat we immersie ervaren.
De rede is een bloem.

Magnifique, un livre qui célèbre la fête de la vie, en expliquant en quoi les plantes sont représentantes des forces vives, d'un échange constant qui est la vie et nous maintient en vie.
Ce livre m'a expliqué beaucoup de sentiments et de comportements personnels, leur a donné un sens profond, que je ne savais exprimer parce que je ne les valorisait pas.
Je me comprends mieux, et ma manière de vivre aussi. Un sens d'être enracinée et enveloppée, que je n'avais jamais associé ni avec un lieu concret ou une religion quelconque. Mon envie de me lancer dans de nouvelles expériences, influencer, d'échanger, sans savoir forcément où cela mènera: Parce que c'est aussi ce qui me fait ressentir une intensité de vivre.
C'est un peu répétitif, mais souvent très beau. Un livre à lire et relire.

La delicadeza y complejidad de las plantas se ha convertido en libro. El filósofo Emanuele Coccia analiza la importancia de la vida vegetal desde el concepto de mixtura. Es decir, todo en la Tierra deriva de la diversidad, del movimiento, de la evolución.
Para mí, lo más interesante reside en que de manera elegante y progresiva va sugiriendo múltiples caminos de lectura que conducen a lecturas pasadas, presentes y futuras. Su ritmo me ha recordado a los versos de Luis de León, sus sentencias al gran Nietzsche y el análisis botánico a los ríos de pensamiento de la mejor, Virginia Woolf.
Una belleza.
Para mí, lo más interesante reside en que de manera elegante y progresiva va sugiriendo múltiples caminos de lectura que conducen a lecturas pasadas, presentes y futuras. Su ritmo me ha recordado a los versos de Luis de León, sus sentencias al gran Nietzsche y el análisis botánico a los ríos de pensamiento de la mejor, Virginia Woolf.
