Double-edge Love #1

Taking Chances

Rate this book
A man who is labeled a criminal meets a woman who is labeled not worth loving.

Scarlett
I made a promise to myself to never love again, and I take it seriously.
Until the day I meet Devon.
Until him, I didn’t think girls like me could find something real. Could be desired for their curves. Could be loved for what was on the inside as much as the outside. But he may change my mind. I just hope he doesn't hurt me.

Devon
I have a past, the kind of past that makes me impossible to bring home to Mama. Ten years after my run in with the law, I want to change. I want to prove I can be a better man. And Scarlett makes me crave that even more.
But when the past can't stay where it belongs, I could lose her, and any semblance of a good man I have become.

Ex-con and the waitress

With only 50ish pages, I knew this story would not have a lot of development. It had a lot of potential, but there seemed to be holes which should have been more thought-out. It lacked character development, and I did not feel a connection between the two characters. The description said the heroine felt she was unlovable, but I just got the feeling she was tired and overworked. I found it hard to believe that Devon was the owner of the bar when he'd only been out of prison for two years...where'd the money come from to buy the place? I didn't like the use of the terms jail and prison interchangeably when those are very different places. And who lets someone steal 10 years of their life, and then helps them out with a large sum of money? WTF?

So a good girl walks into a biker bar.....

TAKING CHANCES is the first book in the Double-edge Love series and is about Scarlett Dickson and Devon Wakefield.
Scarlett is a waitress at Charlie's Chicken who just wants to go home at the end of a long Saturday evening. But her friend and fellow waitress Dawn has other ideas. So Scarlett finds herself out on the dance floor with Dawn having fun before she decides to head for home at midnight. On the drive there is a detour which finds Scarlett in the middle of nowhere on a dark night when her car decides to die. She quickly finds her phone is also dead and with no charger and no one around she decides to walk to find a phone. Thus she finds herself waling into AJ's Bar, a biker bar.
Devon is thirty and has more than a checkered past. He was involved with something when he was eighteen that ended with him in jail for ten years. Now two years out he owns a bar and has turned things around. Under it all he was always a smart guy who knew right from wrong but didn't make the best choices. So on a busy Saturday night he finds himself behind his bar when in walks a woman that does not fit in with his usual clientele and he likes it.

This is a fast-paced book with a good story-line and two very likeable characters in Scarlett and Devon. But the book is riddled with proofreading issues. There is mixed tense, missing words, wrong words and conjunctions, sentences that do not make sense and more. It made it hard to read and annoying. So I ended up skimming, even through the sexy scene, to get to the HEA in the epilogue. In the end it is a shame as I took off a couple of stars because of the issues.

🖤🖤ONE THRILLING WHIRLWIND🖤🖤
Hook, line & sinker! Ava unleashes one earth shaking, action packed, hard hitting, heart pounding, pulse racing, block busting treat, weaving in threads of passion, desire, sizzling touches, cranking this baby up, baring one high octane rollercoaster, wrapping this gem up sleek, shiny and tight. Countenance and dynamics in layer upon layer that you peel back with each page your drawn into this web so profoundly until everything else ceases to exist. Wound, bound and tightly woven, unmasking the explosive ups and agonizing downs, beautiful in it's simplicity and breathtaking in it's depth, laying out the fervent facts, fiery feels and fierce fiascos, blasting this baby to life spectacularly. The magnetism, attraction and intense chemistry collides with such intensity, exposing profound emotions, binding them to one another beautifully. The characters, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits add diversity, transforming into genuine charismatic personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and vivid descriptions creating an elaborate backdrop that as though you're transported to ground zero with them. Fantastic job Ava, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

A seriously good fairly quick read...The hero was framed by his friend for a crime he didn't commit, he served 10 years in prison. Fast forward, a damsel in distress walks into his bar trying to get access to a phone to call a tow truck for her car that cut out some clicks away & her cell phone lost its' charge. There is a spark of hope though, the bartender who she assumes the man to be helps her by ensuring it's a reputable towing service & then takes her back to her stranded car. The tow truck arrives but he insists on taking her home. Next day she returns to the bar to pay the bartender for being a life saver & is surprised to find he's the owner. The spark of attraction cannot be denied, will this girl give her damaged heart to an ex con? I received an arc & this is my honest & voluntary review.

This short story packs the heat. Devon and Scarlett have you believing in redemption and second chances. Devon did something foolish when he was a teenager that sent him to jail. He meets Scarlett when she comes to the bar looking for a phone to call for assistance with her car. Devon knew right off that she was a good woman. Scarlett is insecure when it comes to men, but Devon had her believing in them until his past came back but the power of love has them putting everything aside to take a chance for a happily ever after. I voluntarily agreed to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Never under estimate fate

Love is always found in the least expected place.
Scarlett has car trouble after going out with her friend.
Walks a mile in the dark and walks into a bar looking to use a phone.
Devon, bartending at the moment, allows her to use his.
He takes her back to her car then home.
Sparks are flying so fast that I expected her house to catch on fire.
After she learns of Devons background will she stick around.
Enjoy this book.

If you’’re looking for a quick story with a guaranteed HEA, look no further. There’s not much angst or conflict, except for when Devon tells Scarlett about his colorful past. I read it during my lunch break and it was a great way to pass time. Since it is marketed as a short story, the characters meeting, getting to know each other, and subsequent HEA are not very detailed, but still enjoyable when you need a break from what’s going on in the world.

This was my first read from this author. I loved the fact that the story was told in the first person point of view, because that is always a key in whether or not I'm going to continue reading. This was one engaging story from start to finish and I'm really happy I picked up the book. Scarlett and Devon were both developed, likable characters.

She has been hurt in the past badly. She doesn't want any relationship because she is afraid it will happen again. He has a bad past with the law. She gets into a situation and he helps her. They hit it off but can his past stay in the past or come out to haunt them? It is exciting, emotional, surprising, suspenseful and many other things. What a great start to a new book series by Ava Greene. This is a book of a hot alpha male turning bad-to-good (Devon) and a shy curvy girl (Scarlett) who has given up on love. This is a steamy, short, instalove romance that will have you turning the pages as the heat gets hotter. This book is impossible to put down.

A little fast paced. The end especially. Devon and Scarlett made a very cute couple. I did think Scarlett should've listened to him before freaking out, but that's just me. Overall, a very cute story!

Fun, quick read

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and really enjoyed it! Devon has a past that he has moved in from and meets Scarlett after she has some car trouble. When someone from his past comes back, will it tear them apart?

If you like a quick read with characters that grip you from the beginning, definitely check this book out!
