"HURRY BACK! HURRY BACK! BE SURE TO BRING YOUR DEATH CERTIFICATE, IF YOU DECIDE TO JOIN US. MAKE FINAL ARRANGEMENTS NOW! WE'VE BEEN DYING... TO HAVE YOU..." - Constance the Bride to our departing hero.
I bought this for my seven year-old daughter who complained that it was too scary for her. While I didn't find it scary, I can understand why she did. Dark colors, ghosts, skeletons. Not her thing.
There are two unrelated stories in this book. The first being, Haunted Mansion. I found the plot to be pretty solid. A boy who misses his, recently deceased, super adventurer grandpa and goes into the haunted mansion that they'd planned to explore together. Adequate back story for the principals. A few twists. Very not bad.
Seekers of the Weird, which published two years before Haunted Mansion, appears last. An intellectual brother and his athletic sister witness the abduction of their parents. Upon meeting their estranged uncle they find a magic door in their parents' curio shop that leads to the Museum of the Weird. The character development was a little slow for the first three issues. Story progression was consistent until the last three pages of issue #5. It was like the plotter and/or penciller was really getting into the action scenes when he or she suddenly realized they only had a few pages left and still needed to include a full-page layout for the closer. So there's a half of a page of aftermath (or whatever you want to call it) that leaves a bit of a void.
I'm a very slow reader and I burned through this in about three hours. I'd label this book appropriate for readers aged 10+. Weird and a little creepy. No gore or mature content. Well paced. But occult thrillers aren't my thing. Three stars.
