GhostWalker #17

Lightning Game

Rate this book
GhostWalker Rubin Campo’s rough upbringing made him into the man he is today: strong, steadfast and wary of outsiders. When he and his brother return to their family’s homestead in the Appalachian Mountains, he can immediately sense that a stranger has taken up residence in their cabin—a woman who just happens to be a GhostWalker too.

Jonquille looks deceptively delicate but is clearly a fighter. She also doesn’t seem to care that Rubin could kill her where she stands. She sought him out, wanting to connect on their shared interest in electrical charges. As one of the first failed GhostWalker experiments, Jonquille can produce lightning with her body—but she can’t control it.

Their connection is magnetic, their abilities in sync. Rubin knows she’s his match, the answer to a lifetime of pain and intense loneliness. But Jonquille came to him with hidden intentions, ones that threaten to destroy their bond before it can truly begin.…

This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceI received this book for free from Berkley Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Lightning Game is the latest in the Ghostwalker series and its so impressive the growth by which this series has developed and boy is it OLD which makes me feel OLD and Aging. Have any of you ever had that experience? When following a series and it just hits you how long you have followed it and the journey the author has taken you on through it all? There was something about Lightning Game that brought me back to the beginning of the series. This author will never cease to surprise me and I am amazed by her never ending talent to write a story that captivates me each and every time.

Lightning Game is a story that blew me away because I had NO clue where this author would lead the reader. Rubin and his brother Diego are hiking their way up to their secluded cabin. While they are part of one of the "Ghostwalker" teams, they need their privacy and time together. But when they arrive at their cabin, they find it being "lived" in and by a woman. When they locate the woman....Jonquille, they learn that she is looking for them and that she is just like them or more she is like Rubin. She has done research for years into pyschic doctoring and also has a talent for playing around with lightning but its also been a curse on her life where she can't be around people and has come to Rubin and his brother for help in saving her so she can be normal again. But what she discovers is a man that was made for her, and she for him and even though Whitney manipulated the situation she also can't help but feel a deep connection to the man. But now they are in trouble from enemies that Jonquille has accumulated--but can they find the resolving door to their issues and find peace amongst the turmoil?

Lightning Game is a story that I found to be simply delectable in so many ways. Jonquille was such a unique heroine and I really liked that she wasn't afraid to go to the source when she needed help and she desperately needed help. And she had been studying the brothers for quite some time and understood their abilities and how much they could help her. It can be so heartbreaking in reading these stories especially what the heroines go through since they never had a choice in the life they were forced into. But the men we meet have incredible courage as we especially witness within the pages of this book. We see the depths of evil that some people are capable of. .

The romance that builds between Rubin and Jonquille is so heart warming at times. I absolutely loved that Jonquille couldn't control the lightning urges and Rubin could control it and see the balance that they brought to the table. They have so much in common in many ways and their connection is deep. We don't see too much in sex scenes and I honestly have learned not to expect it too much with this series because of the outside factors--there just isn't time for the smexy stuff.

Overall I found Lightning Game to be a riveting and sensual read that will curl your toes and captivate your heart.

I love Christine Feehan’s series, the Ghost Walker books consistently competes with the Carpathian/Dark books as my favorites of her books.

Lightening Game is the seventeenth novel in this series and this book ramps up the excitement, adventure, and romance to a oace that swept me away into an action-packed fantasy world.

The hero is Ruben Campos, a member of the elite, covert military team, the Ghostwalkers. There are four psychic teams created by Peter Whitney. Ruben is a member of Team 4; he possess psychic and other gifts which define all Ghostwalkers. However, one of Ruben’s gifts is extremely rare, he is one of only two psychic surgeons and shielded by his team members.

Although he made a home in the bayous of New Orleans where his team is building a fortress, Ruben is feeling stifled and visiting his childhood Appalachian home with his younger brother Diego. The brothers childhood memories are especially tragic; their entire family of eleven was struck down, one by one until the two brothers were the only ones left. Thank goodness the orphaned boys met the street wise Ezekiel Fortunes.

Arriving at their cabin Ruben eventually meets a mysterious, intense young woman Jonquille, who also posses a unique gift; she is a conduit for energy and lightening.

Jonquille is one of the girls from Dr. Whitney’s first group of orphaned girls; experimented on, considered a failure, and tossed away. She is wary, lonely and seeks information about what Whitney added to her DNA. Reading about Ruben’s lectures on lightening research, Jonquille sought him out by taking up residence in his old cabin.

Ruben and Jonquille were electric together. Realizing they have been paired, Rueben and Jonquille have to navigate their connection with care.

The story is even more poignant and exciting when Rueben, Jonquille, and Diego head to New Orleans. Several beloved characters from other teams (and our awesome Nonny) make appearances.

Lightening Game is a superb novel these has it all...great characters, action, plot twists, covert ops, and a new villain. All the while a Peter Whitney casts his dark shadow over them all. I loved this book and can’t wait to find out whose story will continue this outstanding series.

This one is about Rubin! We got more details about Rubin and his brother, Diego, in one of the two or three previous books (sorry, I don't remember which one exactly). Having grown up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia in what would be deemed a poverty stricken community, but is also a very insular community that is proud of their heritage and lives and untrustworthy of government, doctors, etc.

Rubin (and Diego's) tragic history of losing their family members one-by-one has caused them to hold tight and over protect what they have. Rubin's sick and tired of being over protected and coddled by his team due to the rare nature of being a psychic surgeon. His frustration boils over, needing a release which is gets in the annual visits back to their homestead, but this year things are not right when they return home.

Jonquille has been seeking answers and a cure for the aggressively negative effects of the experiments that were conducted on her as a child. When she discovers Rubin's research she thinks she's found the answer, until she uncovers a plot to target him during his next visit home. She can solve two problems with one stone if see can meet Rubin and discuss his research and finally get a chance to do something about the parties targeting the Ghostwalkers.

I really loved this mash up! Jonquille was a great character that took us back to some of the original group of female children that Whitney experimented on with a few (horrifying) flashbacks that touched on some of the characters we've come to love as kids. A great meeting of minds with these characters that dropped up back into the fortifications being built in the bayous of Louisiana. So good I couldn't put it down!

Romance, Sexy, Intrigue, Plot Twist, Action Packed

This was a enjoyable, touching story of love, and family connections of blood, and adopted family. We learn more about the Campos brothers, and their love of family, and those they care for living in the Appalachian Mountains. The brothers return yearly to offer their services as Doctors to those that will only deal with a healer. Rubin, the Psychic Surgeon, Doctor, Scientist, and has the ability to redirect lighting to destroy or save crops, lands, and lives. Diego, protector of his older brother, keeping all he considers family safe, and holds his secrets close.

Jonquille, one of the women from Whitney's first group of girls, and considered a failure, may look fragile, but she's a woman of strength, a fighter. Jonguille's a healer, a conduit to draw energy from others, as well as lightning. Unfortunately she isn't able to direct lightning, and is afraid of hurting others. She stays isolated as much as possible, but finds out that Military trackers are after Rubin to capture. Believing Whitney is after Rubin, Jonquille tries to lead the Military trackers away from Rubin, but he arrives a week early in the Appalachian Mountains. Instant attraction, and they both realize Whitney has paired them. Rubin doesn't fight the connection, but Jonquille is determined to keep Rubin safe, even if the cost is her life. Almost too late, Rubin realizes that the men are after Jonquille, and her healer abilities.

A new villain has appeared, and he wants his own Ghostwalker team, and has been conducting horrific experiments on men. Secrets revealed. One being that the Ghostwalker program may began years ago. Jonquille, along with Team 4 rallies to save these men from a painful death. Will they make it in time?

Okay Where do I start. First of all Lightning Game could have been a 5 Star review from me . But the first half of the story is slow going and it really doesn't fit with the last 50% of the story. Except for Rubin and Diego Campo are from West Virginia. I almost stop reading it. I did however return my Kindle edition to Amazon for a full refund!! but kept my Audible edition. The kindle edition at $14.99 is ridiculous pricing for what you are getting.

I liked Jonquil who was the infant baby in the first set of Peter Whitney's Orphan girls. She saved Flame from being brutally raped when she was just 16 months old. I am so sick of the rape or attempted rape in CF's stories. She could have reunited Flame, Jonquil, Lilly, Thorn and Dahlia for a reunion.

Anyway Jonquil has been holding up in Rubin's and Diego's home in the mountains of West Virginia. She wants him to teach her how to control her lightning and harness the energy that causes her to release the lightning anyplace anytime.

They know they are a paired couple so there is no Romance and believe it or not Just one sexual scene which was not very good. DID CHRISTINE FEEHAN WRITE THIS STORY????

The last 50% of the story is Excellent. We meet a newly created GhostWalker team created by and evil villain Oliver Chandler. We also, find a lost brother of our GhostWalkers. We see a little bit of team one. Of course Nonny is there but only a very little. I would have loved to seen the triplets and twins of Wyatt and Trap's newly born son.

There is so much that could have been done with this story, but it wasn't!! So 3 Stars for a half an story!! Oh Dr. Whitney was barely mentioned. Odd!

There are many ways to feel lonely. No matter a person’s strength, intelligence, skills. Whether surrounded by those you love, by other people, or completely alone. There are many ways to feel apart from others and the need for connection. Until someone comes along and you see each other for who you are not just what you’re capable of doing. Love builds from this understanding and builds a bond between you stronger than anything else.

Jonquille and Rubin are examples of this, thanks to the enhancements the series antagonist, Dr Whitney gave them. Jonquille is forced to be isolated, some of her enhancements are unable to be controlled and are dangerous when around others. Rubin is revered because of his healing gift, those who care about him feel the need to protect him, begin to only see him as this one gift and not the person he is. They are paired by Dr Whitney, giving them the balance and attraction, but how do they move toward love?

It’s the people they are. The time spent getting to know each other, in search of knowledge, and due to the need to protect the other, they are brought together. Unaware of how special his gifts are Jonquille comes to know the man he became because of his past and the science he loves, the things he enjoys and the people he loves. By Sharing her past, telling him of her life with Whitney, her mind and the skills others never see, her strength and intelligence and wit, the person she became despite all Whitney put her through and took from her. He moves past this is my paired female to this is the woman I love.

Their journey takes place in the wonderful setting of the Appalachian Mountains, Rubin and Diego Compo’s childhood home and their turf, so well written you feel you are there. By the end of the first chapter your heart belongs to these characters and your want their Happy Ever After to work! The relationship of Diego and Rubin, their skills from childhood and enhancements are amazing! The world they shared with Jonquille open her to the possibility she could be part of something, at Rubin’s side she could be around others and belong, use skills of her own that she was denied using most of her life. The banter between Rubin Diego and Jonquille brings wit and humor to the story. The wisdom and mischief of fellow Mountain friends drive the plot and add to understanding. The danger they face, the twists and turns on who is the target, who is the enemy, keep you on the edge of your seat…especially the “I can’t believe Christine did that” moment, even if it’s perfect event to drive the plot.

The series also gets a boost in this story with Jaw dropping surprises and grin causing Karma delivered with team 4 and other teams aiding them. By the end the Happily Ever After is so sweet, both of them in love with each other and coming to a new understanding and respect for all their gifts, even the ones thought to cause their loneliness. Looking forward to reading what’s next for the Ghostwalkers…

Yessss.

I couldn't have been more excited to receive Lightning Game as an eARC - it's a series I have really come to enjoy and this is the #17th installment; Rubin's story.

No spoilers, as this isn't due out until March 2021 but Lightning Game is Christine Feehan at her finest; loved the setting, the story, the romance, everything! Feehan's real strength is in her world-building and Lightning Game is an exciting escape with characters that I could read about for a few hundred more pages (I like big books and I cannot lie).

Fans of the series might want to take a day off of work on March 2, 2021 because you won't want to put this one down! If you haven't read this series and you like magical realism with a military twist, you have until March to read up (feel free to skip books 7-12, like I did).

Fans will enjoy the continuing adventures of the GhostWalkers, but Rubin and Jonquille's story doesn't cover any new ground in this world and advances the overarching hunt for Dr. Whitney only minimally.

The Ghostwalkers are back!

And Rubin gets his story! I’d like to think I’m patient as I wait for the next in the group of Ghostwalkers to find their mate, but for some reason I was anxious for this one. Rubin did so much for the group. I know they all did/do, bringing their special skills to help them all. I had a soft spot for him though and Jonquille met my expectations for sure…

Getting ahead of Rubin and his brother Diego seemed impossible but somehow Jonquille did it. She was as unique as her name and her trouble was tightly bound with theirs. Coming together to fight common enemies was nothing new for the brothers but for Jonquille it was a foreign concept. She was used to being alone. Surviving alone. Watching both of them slowly reveal their most personal thoughts, while dodging life-threatening situations was a treat…

I loved, loved, loved how humour and the warm sense of family came together once again in a paranormal-filled, military-esque romance. There was insta-love for sure but it was backed up with lots of exciting, heart-pinging twists as strangers became much more…

This is the seventeenth in this series so there does feel like some repetition in the facts and back story - not necessarily a bad thing when you don’t start at the beginning. And it doesn’t take away from what was another great read in the series… ~Diane, 4 stars

LIGHTNING GAME is the seventeenth instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult GHOSTWALKERS erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on an elite group (4 teams) of enhanced men and women known as the GhostWalkers (GW). These ‘super soldiers’ were once part of an unauthorized government experiment performed by Dr. Peter Whitney but several soldiers have, since, opted into the program on their own. This is US Army Colonel and GhostWalker Rubin Campo, and female GhostWalker Jonquille’s story line. LIGHTNING GAME can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Jonquille and Rubin) LIGHTNING GAME follows GhostWalker Team four members, psychic surgeon Rubin Campo, and his brother Diego, on their return to their family homestead in the Appalachian Mountains where they will come face to face with an enhanced female GhostWalker Jonquille. For months, our heroine has passed herself off as a lab assistant in an effort to uncover the truth about herself, and her ability to absorb the power of lightning. Rubin Campo has been studying the possibility of directing lightning, and in this our heroine is desperate to learn to direct the use of her own powers. Rubin Campo knows immediately that Jonquille is the female whose DNA has been matched to his own, and in this Ruben is immediately protective of the woman with whom he will fall in love but all is not well for our story line heroine as another group of enhanced soldiers, this time controlled by another madman working for the US government, is determined to take down our story line heroine. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Jonquille and Ruben, and the potential fall-out as a group of US soldiers has gone rogue, in an effort to protect our story line heroine.

Meanwhile, Oliver Chandler, a former associate of Peter Whitney, is trying to develop a new group of super soldiers, but in doing so, all but destroys the men he is hoping to control. Someone, only known as ‘Swamp Man’ gives the GhostWalkers pause, and in this, the rescue of a family face and name, bring the GhostWalker Teams together.

The relationship between Jonquille and Ruben is slow to build as Ruben’s brother Diego struggles to trust our story line heroine. Ruben knows that Jonquille is his fated mate, and in this, Ruben and Jonquille will work together to direct the lightning and energy for a better cause. The $ex scenes are limited, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Unlike several of the previous instalments in the GhostWalker series, and some of the author’s other series, LIGHTNING GAME does not focus on the sexual needs and wants of our story line hero. Ruben Campo knows Jonquille is the woman that calls to his heart, and in this, he doesn’t force his power, his alpha-ness, or an over the top attitude regarding a woman’s place, and the man she must serve. The growing love between our couple is heart warming and intimate, sweet and consuming.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and familiar characters including several members of other GhostWalker Teams–Ryland Miller, and several members of Team one; Ezekiel (Bellisia), and Mordichai Fortunes, Colonel Joe Spagnola, Gino Mazzo (Zara), Wyatt Fontenot, and everybody’s favorite grandmother Nonny Fontenot. We are introduced to Ruben’s brother Diego, and a new group of GhostWalkers, who may or may not have future story lines: Harris Ledes, Sean O’Connell, and Kevin Morris

LIGHTNING GAME is an energetic and spirited story line. The premise is riveting; the romance is inspiring and captivating; the characters are intense and dynamic.

As I had mentioned in my review of LETHAL GAME (#16), LIGHTNING GAME is also a bit of a departure from the author’s usually graphic violent and sex obsessive story lines. With the addition of several psychic healers, the GhostWalkers takes on a bit of the Dark (Carpathian) feel, paralleling the earlier works of the author’s series.

I was so excited to receive an ARC of this book because it's been one of my long standing favorite series. I will say the beginning was a bit slow to me. I loved the interplay between Jonquil, Rubin and Diego but after awhile I was thinking "Could we please get on to the story?". Once the team that was tailing Jonquil shows up I couldn't put it down. I loved that while Jonquil and Rubin are figuring out their relationship we also see Jonquil and Diego bonding as family and I loved that. We get to see some new characters show up that I'm hoping we will get to know better in future books and there's also cameos from some favorites from other Ghostwalker teams. I don't want to give away important parts of the story but in the end this one was definitely a great read and I can't wait for more! So if it seems slow to you as well in the beginning push through because it is definitely worth it.

I have always devoured Christine Feehan's works, but her GhostWalker books have gotten better and better with each book! The network of characters interweave throughout the series to give a better understand and love for each and every one. . . and leave me totally satisfied with the story being told while keeping me anxious to read the next installment. (The best of both worlds for an ongoing series as far as I am concerned.)

I enjoyed seeing into Rueben's heart. He is a healer of immeasurable skill - one of very few in the world that can mend a broken body with his psychic abilities alone. But he is also a soldier and protector that is fed up with being coddled and kept from harm's way in order to keep him and his remarkable talent safe. The actions of his team, and his own brother Diego in particular, leave him frustrated and feeling like a liability in the field, rather than an asset. He is a fully fleshed-out character rather than the run-of-the-mill ruggedly handsome prince charming with few flaws or issues. It is one of the many things I love about Ms. Feehan's writings. Jonquille, on the other hand, would give everything she has to be the healer she knows she could be if not for genetic experiments gone wrong that make her unable to interact with people without endangering their lives even more. She yearns for family, love, and human contact. She wants so badly to not be the epic failure she has been classified as her entire life. The interactions between the two are dynamic and believable, despite their futuristic abilities. They may be fated for one another, but the relationship still takes work. . . and the need for communication is still just as important, even for telepaths.

This book was a very fast read for me. I could not put it down! Between the suspense of the situation, the building love between Rueben and Jonquille, and the cagey old moonshining codger Luther, I had to keep reading despite the lateness of the hour. I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.

Recommended for fans of Seanan McGuire, Jim Butcher, and Christine Feehan's other series.

When Diego and his brother Rubin go to their childhood home like they do each year, they know someone has been using their cabin. They are cautious as they look through the cabin, but when Rubin gets a look at the woman that comes in, he's instantly attracted to her.

Jonquille was one of Whitney's first group of experiments and is considered a failure. She was able to escape from Whitney's lab and has searched for a way to be normal again. When she hears Rubin speaking at a conference, she thinks he might help with her particular problem, so she gets to know him and follows him, ending up at his cabin.

If you've been reading this series, you know that Whitney has been experimenting on people for a long time. Jonquille was part of his first group of girls who were kidnapped and experimented on. Her DNA was changed, and she was psychically and physically enhanced. Diego and Rubin were also enhanced, but they were thought to be successes and are now part of the Ghostwalker team, a team of highly trained and enhanced individuals sent on missions that no one else could accomplish. Diego and Rubin both have psychic gifts of their own, Rubin's being a psychic surgeon, but he can also redirect lightning. So when he finds out that Jonquille can produce lightning, but she can't direct where it goes, he knows that she is his mate. Whitney has been known to make two people with similar gifts so they'd be good together. He knows that Whitney has paired them together. He also made it so they would be physically attracted to each other, which explained that right away.

It doesn't take long for Rubin to realize after talking with Jonquille that she had an ulterior motive for coming to the cabin when she did. She thinks that Whitney has trackers on his tail, so she leads them to the cabin thinking she can outwit them and take them all out or at least try to keep him safe. At this point, Rubin and Diego knew they could trust her and make a plan to take out anyone who comes looking for them. But Jonquille finds herself in danger, and we get to see Rubin, Diego, and Jonquille all work together to figure things out.

When a new villain is made known, and we find out that others are being experimented on because someone else wants their own Ghostwalker team, we see Rubin's team come together to help the men being experimented on.

I really enjoyed the romance between Rubin and Jonquille. They are meant for each other....literally. If you've liked this series so far, you will love this latest book.

Lightning Game was absolutely my favorite GhostWalkers story, which said a lot when I truly loved all the others sixteen titles, too! This story stood out in that just one chapter ~ Ch 17 was dedicated to Hot Romance! OMG! What a chapter 🔥 The other 19 chapters? Consisted of meticulous/mind-blowing research on how to control/redirect where lightnings strike so as to reduce their destructive power as well as to weaponize them. And yes~ we readers were totally enticed into losing ourselves in the amazing deeds of lovable/likable/heroic characters & more. What a spectacular ride!

I was so crazy in love with Rubin, a to-die-for Hero, one of the only two rare psychic surgeons in the world, whose gift was showcase in all of its staggering power all through the story! A great surprise? Jonquille, his paired mate, shared the same healing gift that matched his! They were beyond magical together, unstoppable in battle, either in healing or taking down enemies.

The twist that caught me off guard? There was no satisfaction of defeating the enemies in battle this time around! The mastermind got handcuffed, too easy! That was a bit anticlimactic! Yet~ it was definitely justice, in a certain extent, for half of the down soldiers who believed they were fighting for the country!

The deep and special bonds among the GhostWalkers from different Teams made me so emotional! And nothing could compare to the bonds between blooded brothers, like Rubin and Diego, and others.

Best of all ~ I loved a super gorgeous story telling💖 This was An Amazing ~ Most Talented Author~ at the Top of Her Game!🙇🏽‍♀️

Sharing one of my favorite scenes:

"Drink," Diego insisted. "You don't, you're done and he's dead anyway. You're all he got, Rubin, so take a minute and rest your brain. You're bleeding."

"I am?" He brushed at his eyes again. He was. His eyes and ears. . .

"This is your last shot," Diego said. "You don't get it this time, we're calling it."

"That's on me, brother. He's still alive. I fight for him," Rubin said softly. "He's fighting, I'm fighting." He sucked down the cold water, letting it pour down his throat. Once more he stood up over the body, this time with Diego's support on one side and Wyatt's on the other, and he began working again.

Rubin and Diego Campo are members of Ghostwalker Team 4 ParaRescue. They are the team that is sent in when other Ghostwalkers need medical help. Rubin is also that rare talent, a psychic surgeon and has been experimenting with lightning. The government is wanting the military to develop the ability to use lightning as a weapon.Their home base is in Louisiana but they make a pilgrimage to their childhood home in the Appalachian Mountains once a year. This trip starts out no different from previous trips until they arrive at their home and find it is being occupied.
Meet Jonquille. She discovered that Rubin has been giving talks on his lightning research and decided her best shot at talking to him would be at his childhood home. Jonquille has the problem of being a lightning magnet is unable to be around others much. After following Rubins’ research Jonquille is hoping Rubin can help her.
The dynamics between Rubin and Jonquille are quietly electrifying. Add in Diego for a bit of seriocomic relief. Then we have the mystery of who is being followed. Is it Jonquille or Rubin? Things come to a head and the three return to Louisiana.
Major happenings with what I consider major reveals occur at this point.
I would have to say that Lightning Game is one of the best books I have read. I would rate it towards the top of my top 10 books in this series. It is my opinion that Christine Feehan is back in the form of her earlier books. For those that are concerned about the amount of sex in her recent books, you will be happy to know that there is very little in this one and what there is doesn’t take place until towards the end of book. I expect to reread this one multiple times.
I know I’ve said it before but if you have not pre-ordered this book run out and buy it in your local book store or wherever you buy books. You really won’t regret getting this one!!!!

Love this book. Rubin has found his pairing and he is not letting her go but he might just push her away if he isn't careful and thank goodness he has Diego to watch that back and school him on a thing or two.

Jonquille has been waiting to meet Rubin, he's her last hope. But when she does it isn't what she thought it would be and now she is going to walk away knowing at least she tried.

Until he won't let her. The problem is he can't fix her like she wanted and he was her last hope. So she's stuck and doesn't know exactly what to do next. Then that decision is taken out of her hands when trouble arrives.

This is one of my favorite books of the series and I cannot wait to read the next one.

Wow! This is different from the other series I've read by Feehan. It was a fast-paced, black op, thriller. It's a combination of Rollins'Psy-Ops series, Mission Impossible, and The Island of Dr. Moreau. The romance was light, without all the steamy scenes that sometimes distracted from a robust plot, and I'm grateful not to have been distracted. I will definitely read more in this series.

when Lightning Strikes

Lots of action and adventure in this one. And I feel it’s more science fiction. It’s still fully a romance but the science is amazing!

I absolutely loved this one, it pulled on my heart, made me wonder, made me laugh and it took me to Appalachian Mountains and down to the Louisiana swamps. I had sniffles when we meet some other Ghost Walkers, what they had been through, what they were hoping to achieve. Just hurt my heart. I laughed out loud when Rubin and Diego would pick and snipe at each other mentally and it totally thrilled me that Jonquille was intelligent and self confident enough to know what was going on and had her own snark. This book hooked me with the brothers relationship and reeled me in with such an intelligent, caring women in Jonquille. It carried me down the road with them on their struggle and left me sniffling with a box of Kleenex wondering where are we going next. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions

Wow this book represents a complete turnaround from this author’s spate of erotic dark romance across her various series in recent years. This has some heat to it, but it’s a slow burn without a sex scene every minute leaving room for the tension and plot and action to celebrate this author’s writing. For what it’s worth, I have no problem with high heat books, but in recent years, it’s often felt like some of her books have sacrificed plot and action and storytelling for to me, misplaced and problematic spice which is not great, because the storylines are clearly meant to be action-packed plot-driven, character-enhanced works of paranormal fiction. The author definitely succeeds here in delivering a quality addition to this series and to her body of work, telling a compelling story, eschewing a lot of the toxicity and making you care about these characters.

Featuring psychic surgeon, Rubin, and human lightening rod, Jonquille, the premise of this story is that a rogue scientist has broken sways from (big bad) Whitney’s research and developed his own set of bootleg Ghostwalkers, who unfortunately have a lot of glitches and somehow believe that Jonquille (a “failed” Whitney experiment)’s capacity with lightening can save them in some way. It’s up to the original Ghostwalkers to save the day.

What’s funny is that we were getting to a point where we were running out of Ghostwalkers for books, and now two whole new teams have been introduced as potential protagonists for many more books. I remember when the author did this towards the end of the stories for the original GhostWalker team. I love this author’s capacity for a long series and with how much I enjoyed this one and how interested I am in the secondary characters, I don’t mind if she wants to continue on with the Ghostwalkers in perpetuity. Of course it wouldn’t be a CF book without a triggering back story for the main characters, so beware of that. For the past couple of years, the GhostWalker series has been my favourite from this author. And this book really supports that opinion. I really enjoyed it.

I must admit, this story really tugged at my heart strings. I really felt sorry for Jonquille. She was one of many guinea pigs that Whitney experimented on. Whitney considered her a failure.
Jonquille had no clue what DNA Whitney had mixed in her when he experimented. She only knew that the power that she had made her unable to be around people. She gave up on ever having friends, a family or a future.
She had taken to sneaking in the conferences and talks that Rubin gave, hoping to find out information on how to undo what Whitney had done to her.
Rubin was greatly intrigued by Jonquille who had taken up residence in his family’s old homestead. He found himself greatly drawn to her as she explained why she was there, hoping that he could undo the horrible things that Whitney had done to her.
Rubin and his brother always came back home at least once a year. Rubin used his doctor skills to help the hometown country folks who did not like going to big city doctors. No one knew, or at least would never say, that Rubin healed them with more than his doctor skills. No one spoke of the seemingly magical way that they were healed when Rubin came around.
As Rubin, Diego and Jonquille went visiting the town folks, they discovered that Jonquille also had a natural healing energy about her. So they started working together and began learning about each other as time went on.
But all was not well on the horizon. Jonquille and/or Rubin and Diego had people after them, and it appeared that there were two different teams after them. But who were they after?
After Jonquille was kidnapped by one team of soldiers, Rubin and Diego set out to rescue her. As they went along, they learned that there was another person who was trying to produce super soldiers and was running into difficulties.
Could they rescue Jonquille, find out what is going on with the new soldiers, and come out alive?
Plan on staying up late reading as Rubin and Jonquille learn to trust each other, work together and help out other soldiers with their compassion and healing.

I really enjoyed this book. The series got a little stale before this one and the book previous to this one in that we only saw one team and all they did was fight off Whitney's super soldiers. That got a bit tiring to read but in this one, Whitney isn't the big bad villain. Though he contributed to him. I liked that Jonquille was one of the first girls so we got to have a bit of a refresher of Flame and Dahlia as well as learn more about her. I do wish that there would have been a reunion scene with Jonquille and Flame. That would have been perfect. Anyway, we learned way more about Rubin and Diego in this book than we knew previously though a reader of the series had some idea of what the two had gone through. It also took place outside of Lousiana for the most part and we found out about more soldiers who were enhanced. Only they were tricked into thinking it was for the Ghost Walker program. Finally, we get to meet the third Fontenot brother so that leaves me wondering who is going to be male protagonist in the next book. There are SO MANY options. It's gonna be so hard to wait a year for the next one. This series is worth the wait though.

Very disappointing. I am a huge fan of the GhostWalkers series and was really looking forward to Rubin's book. (He is a psychic surgeon)

There was no romance. They meet, he tells her he thinks they've been paired and he has seen the other pairs and he wants his woman. That's it. They kiss a few times and there is no sex until almost the end of the book.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Oh and Rubin and his woman Jonquill can together control lightning strikes.

The entire focus of the book is on who is hunting them in their forest. That doesn't make any sense either. Turns out another team of GhostWalkers (a secret team that no one knew about, Whitney's scientist Chandler stole research somehow and created his own team) and now they have medical problems and think based on a few searches on a computer that Jonquill can heal them. They decide the best way to do this is take her prisoner. Not ask her.

Oh and one of the almost dead secret Ghostwalkers is Wyatt's missing brother Roch. It felt like the whole book was thrown together.

No romance. Suspense background didn't make any sense. I will not re-read this book and I've re-read almost all of the GhostWalkers series.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lightning Game. I am excited that it was Rubin's story. After Lethal Game I wanted to learn more about him and his brother. Their story is horrendous and discovering more about what they'd been through was not easy. I enjoyed their relationship with each other and the people on the mountain.
Jonquille was a little harder to connect with, but her relationship with Rubin worked. It was nice to have the hero be fully in agreement with their connection and not have to wade through all the back and forth that we often have to do with the hero.
The story had a great mixture between family and relationship, and tense action.
I struggled a bit with the reveal of a new team. Well, more than a team as there are quite a few. Rubin and Diego killed a number of them, but when they officially meet no one mentions that or struggles with it. Some of them were traitors, but it didn't feel quite fully developed or handled. I just hope we'll finish Team 4 before we move on to the new guys.
Overall another great addition to the series. Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for the ARC.

I really enjoyed this latest book in the GhostWalker series by Christine Feehan. This is Rubin and Jonquille's story. Tough as nails but lonely for human contact, they find each other and work together to fight against the doctor who performed experiments on them to create super soldiers. Lots of action, suspense, and romance makes this a great read. Highly recommended.
