Despite their being stronger mages in the Kirby, Jonathan Thunder is the only mage on record to record a dragon kill during a fight with a dragonknight. Thishas prompted Queen Mildred to give Jonthan the title of Champion of Kirby, the first time a commoner has ever held the title. Despite his detractors Jonathan has been able to secure a place as the first official commoner to instruct at the Tower of Magic. Jonathan has made many enemies on his way to fame, some minor, some at the highest levels of mage culture. Many people want Jonathan stripped of both titles. It is only when the Downian Dragonknights decide to launch a full scale invasion that even Jonathan's detractors are willing to admit they need help. Join Jonathan as he transitions from Initiate on his quest to become Archmage.
I know a bunch of you have been asking exactly you the heck I am. First off, my name is Whiskey Flowers, I was active duty army and now I am a proud member of the New Mexico National Guard. In my day job, I am a corrections officer, I watch the best and brightest Albuquerque has to offer and make little money doing it. I am originally from Oakland, California, home of dumbasses and knuckleheads everywhere where I attempted to become their leader until the army put me on a different path. As many of you have pointed out, I never got my high school diploma, I am a GED student but I make it look good. If any of you are ever in New Mexico and want a drinking partner, I got you.
Nom nom nom potato chip book can’t stop reading. I really liked the longer book it just felt more finished than some of whiskeys other books I know it was technically two books but it just felt like a good length to me and less abruptly finished. I think johnathon thunder is a great character he takes no s*** from anyone and I like that. Great fantasy world building and just good fun l hope this author’s muse keeps flowing and I get to read more books soon
After the first book I was so hopeful that the continuation of the series would be entertaining at worst and inspiring at best. I had my hopes and dreams crushed within the first page. The first issue was punctuation and grammar. Literally, in the first two sentences I can see at least five grammatical errors. The majority of the book is written in dialogue, with maybe 25% as action. As years have passed in these books I had hoped for some character development or character arches. Sadly I received none of it. Well the characters in book one are teenagers, the antics they get it up to our excusable in a way. The cringe worthy actions that the characters get up to in the second and third books is migraine inducing. The other thing that I struggled with? The ridiculousness of repetition in this book. Literally if you read through this book you were going to get page after page after page of the exact same dialogue and it is so frustrating. I really, really, wanted this to be a great continuation and to explore the characters development as they face new obstacles and struggles, sadly It is basically a gaggle of the world tallest six year olds slap fighting against each other. The combination of lack of character development, lack of world building in this book, and lack of originality and plot twists made this a struggle to get through. I am really at a crossroads of whether I even want to try and read the next book, as I was so let down by this one. Who knows.
I liked the story and thought that it was a good addition to the series, but its frequently illegible. Words are repeated, parts of sentences were duplicated. The author got the character names wrong several times. I had to stop reporting errors because it would have taken me 4 times longer to read it, if I kept stopping to report them.
I really like the plot of the story and it has a great potential of making it really exciting and fun to read. But because of some broken continuity of the story and a lot of characters involved of which even the author got confused sometimes who is speaking to whom, and some typographical error here and there, and a lot of ideas and plot going on, the suspense and the highlight of the story is kinda hurried deeply into side story that does not necessarily affect the whole story. It's just too much going on and to much winding up and down until you just wanna go right to the end and see what happened. I like it though, but because of too many redundancies, it just made me feel burp plus the era of reference is a little bit confusing. I'd still recommend this book for those into underdog heroes that rise to the occasion in spite of mountains of adversaries.
The double book follows Jonathan Thunder as he becomes an instructor at the Mage Tower through his quest to become Archmage of the kingdom. He must deal with the disdain of noble mages for commoner mages. However, no one is willing to back up their scorn with a challenge to a dual. I like the action, humor, and almost romance. Jonathan is a strong, no-bull, goal focused character. He tells it like it is even though people don't want to hear it. He becomes interested in a few girls along the way, and refines what he is looking for in a wife. I hope there will be another book, as the courtship of Crystal would be a great story.
I loved this fun simple great read. I'm sorry the series ended as I could have kept reading about the MC for several more books! The only issues were with the whole series and were all editing and grammar. This series had me so engaged that I read all three over two days while layed up sick. The MC was so complete and what he did kept me reading, excited to find out how the story would play out. I read a lot and this book and series is what makes reading all bland books worth it! Just a great read! I hope all the Author's other work is as good because I look forward to getting lost in this world again!!!
The book was good, though im definitely not satisfied not finding out if Jon gets the girl at the end. I kinda feel like the end was a little bit of a cliff hanger that implied a 5th book but the author has made it clear thats not to happen. I would loved to have gotten a final chapter or two x amount of time later that explains how things ended up. Otherwise i feel like some of it was a bit rushed and there are plenty of spelling or general writing mistakes. Would love it if the book was reworked to have significantly less issues.
The same thing happened with ‘Wizardborn’. At first:
“I hate the system… but I’m going to get my revenge!”
But then:
“I’m going to work with the system… but I’ll complain the whole time!”
One of these is fun to read, one is not. And when he’s not complaining he’s listing off the marriage hierarchy. Yes, we get it, noble mage, commoner mage, noble mundane, commoner. At one point he goes through his entire class and describes each of their marriage prospects. In detail. Just not that interesting!
I really enjoy this author please read previous books on the lightning mage first. Sometimes flowers is a little rough with spelling and grammar. All of his books have great fantasy feel, leave you in a different world usually of magic. I have read everything under the flowers pen name and a few under a different pen name. ALL of his books are great entertainment.
The story Continues in this next volume/2 volumes and if you read the first 2 then you can look forward to more of the same strengths and weaknesses throughout. I think the best way to describe it is that each of the books in this series is like the episode of a sitcom, the main character can not really ever get the girl, the rivalries can never really be solved and by the end while things have moved forward it feels a lot like being back at square one ready for the next round of shenanigans.
Gave it 5 stars because the author tried. Honestly its maybe a 3 star book all told. Spelling errors and half the book is the main character just repeating himself. The story line is good. The magic is great. But the repeating of his had killed so many.... he isn't good enough.... he is just a commoner..... book could have been cut in half.
So like I said good story line but fluffed up with repeating complaints.
How disappointing another Excellent story poorly told
I love an excellent swashbuckling story, and this is it. Just be prepared for the mental exercise. This Author needs to loose Spell Check and actually learn Proof Reading!!!! They need to learn the difference between the two functions ( this story is a diamond in the rough ). I'd have given more stars, but just can't get past the awful grammar, bad word choices and continuity issues.
I am not even sure the book was even seen by a proofreader, let alone an actual editor. Excessive simple grammatical errors, and was/were, did/done, etc. mistakes. By halfway through the book, it became so distracting that I was forced to put the book down. Which is too bad, the story was otherwise entertaining, if a bit simple. This put me off any further reading of this author's work.
The missing pieces of Jon's life prior to The Crystal Mage
I liked that it tied up the events following The Queen's champion and the events leading up to Crystal Mage. I am interested to see how the author intends to write the story leading up to the events in the knight mage. This is a must read if you have read the other books in this universe.
This is a great story. It’s currently after midnight and I stayed up just to finish this book. There are quite a few grammatical errors but they do not detract from the book. This story hooked me in book one and I read them all in a week. Thank you for these amazing books Whiskey
The story is terrific! Love the characters, too (except the backstabbing nobles). The bickering gets a little old after awhile (from both sides). The part that causes the loss of a star is VERY poor editing. In not an English major, but wow, fire who you use now, find someone else.
This book could have been 4 stars if the errors didn’t regularly pull you out of the flow of the story. The ending isn’t a surprise, after all the story has been leading you there all along. It’s a fun read, and I would like to see, no matter how anti-climatic, some of how Jon grows into his dream and changes the kingdom.
This book was difficult to put down. I enjoyed Johnathan's story. He was ridiculed, insulted and undermined at every turn, yet he kept pushing fwd until his dream was achieved. I do wish we would've gotten a chance to read about his competition with Russell for Crystal's affections.
Giant book. Go buy it or read on KU. There are fights, rogue mages, missy faces, and war. A goal is reached. Now we need more about Jon and Crystal. Then more books about their son. (Where all the commoner mages go to Downey). Best series of book by author.
Great to have the two books for closure. Would wish for better editing but the same flavor of the first two books survived. Plenty of action, but some of the bragging gets repetitive. All in all a good series.
You guys have to read this series, I enjoy the journey with the mc. Sure sometimes the author like to relist.old injuries a lot but I like it over all... Thx for writing it
I enjoyed reading this story from begining to present end. I have become a fan of Whisky Flowers. I think she has a unique style of writing and a wonderful imagination. I hope to see much more work from her.
Interesting read, could stand some more editing as there are wrong or double words almost every chapter. Over all content was consistent and kept me reading to the end. I have enjoyed all 4 books and have ordered 3 more in the series.
The books are ok but overly redundant. There is lots of action but super annoying redundancy in multiple parts of the book like everyone thinks because he dated one girl he is hopelessly In love with her even after he is dating other people and clearly moved on.
