Charley had no one after his parents died when he was little ... until Alex came along and took him under his wing when they were eight. The two boys were inseparable after that, living together in Brightside. It never occurred to Charley to wonder how Alex came by the expensive luxury goods he brought home ... until the day Alex was sentenced to live on the other side of the wall in the middle of the city, in Otherside, for nine years. He was only fourteen. That was five years ago. All too many people die there, where there are no laws, compared to Brightside's many and stringent laws. Alex is still alive, but from what little Charley can tell when they meet each other once a week, a wall of bulletproof glass between them, Alex lives dangerously, so who knows what could happen in the four years he still has to stay there ... if they even let him back to Brightside when his sentence is up. Charley has spent these years lobbying tirelessly for Alex's release. He studies political science, in hopes of becoming a politician so he can change the unfair laws that banished his friend. None of it has made any difference. It's time to do more, to do whatever he can, because he just can't live without him.
