The liver is the site for the body’s most powerful detoxification, but over the years an unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle choices, and environmental toxins can take their toll on liver health. World renowned physician and author Dr. Russell Blaylock provides a comprehensive overview of the liver, outlines the latest health information on the many dangers to your liver-health, and what you can do to protect The Liver Cure offers natural remedies, lifestyle strategies, and dietary solutions that can take your liver off overload to resolve a wide range of symptoms and conditions, along with the latest treatment solutions from conventional and alternative therapies to new scientific discoveries and interventions.
Dr. Blaylock is a board certified neurosurgeon, author and lecturer. He attended the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his general surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. During his residency he ran the neurology program for one year and did a fellowship in neurosurgery after his residency. For the past 25 years he has practiced neurosurgery in addition to having a nutritional practice. He recently retired from both practices to devote full time to nutritional studies and research.
During his residency training he worked with the eminent neurosurgeon, Dr. Ludwig Kempe. Together they developed the transcallosal removal of intraventricular tumors, which is still used today. Dr. Blaylock presented their cases utilizing this technique to the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. They also developed the ventriculolymphatic shunt in the treatment of hydrocephalus. In addition, they conducted neuroanatomical studies together with the aim of developing improved approaches in vascular intracranial surgery.
He has continued a close personal friendship with Dr. Kempe over the ensuing years, who at age 91 continues to study neuroanatomy, ornithology and is an editor of a major journal on medieval studies. Of special note, Dr. Kempe climbed the Himalayan mountains at age 87, a testament of his robust health and enduring love of adventure..
It was during his residency that Dr. Blaylock did much of the primary work on intraventricular monitoring of craniocerebral trauma patients, which was reported in the scientific literature. He also worked closely with Dr. Peter Jannetta during Dr. Jennetta’s early research on vascular compression of the cranial nerves as a cause of trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm. Dr. Blaylock was one of the first neurosurgeons to utilize high-intensity nutritional supplementation in craniocerebral trauma patients, which met with great success.
Dr. Blaylock has written and illustrated three books. The first book was on the subject of excitotoxins (Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills) and how they are related to diseases of the nervous system. His second book, Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life, covers the common basis of all diseases, nutritional protection against diseases of aging, protection against heavy metal toxicity, the fluoride debate, pesticide and herbicide toxicity, excitotoxin update, the vaccine controversy, protection against heart attacks and strokes and contains a new chapter on omega-3 fats. This book has been newly revised as an oversized paperback. His third book, Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients, was released in April, 2003 and discusses the ways to defeat cancer, enhance the effectiveness of conventional treatments and prevent complications associated with these treatments. In addition, he has written and illustrated three chapters in medical textbooks, written a booklet on nutritional protection against biological terrorism and written and illustrated a booklet on multiple sclerosis. He has written over 30 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals on a number of subjects.
Since the publication of his first book he has been a guest on numerous national and international syndicated radio programs and appeared on the 700 Club several times. He appeared on Nutritionally Living with Dr. Ward Bond. Presently, he is engaged in a monthly radio program discussing his book, Health and Nutrition Secrets on Raymond Francis’ program Beyond Health. The series will run for 12 months. He lectures widely to both lay and professional medical audiences on a variety of nutritional subjects.
Dr. Blaylock serves on the editorial staff of the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association and is on the editorial staff of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. He serves on the ed
I saw this book popping up in a few places and thought I'd give it a look. As someone who has had a fatty liver diagnosis in the past, I sometimes read liver health books to make sure I'm doing the right things to keep myself and my liver happy and healthy.
The book starts off promisingly, with a fairly comprehensive yet easy to understand overview of the liver, how it functions, and how it can be affected by environmental and behavioural factors. Dr. Blaylock discusses several diseases, including warning signs and treatments. He appears to offer a lot of good, sensible advice.
However, sprinkled in his writing were several odd statements that set my spidey senses tingling. He doggedly attacks several substances including MSG, aspartame, and fluoride (which have all been thoroughly tested and found safe over the course of decades) as toxic and implies that vaccines are also potentially dangerous substances. He goes so far as to say that Tylenol (acetaminophin) is so dangerous it should be taken off the market. I decided to look into Dr. Blaylock and what I found was that there isn't a conspiracy theory that he doesn't believe in. From chemtrails to Covid-19 vaccines to anti-mask theories to aluminum cookware to euthanasia panels, Dr. Blaylock believes in and endorses them all and more. According to Dr. Blaylock, everything and everyone is out to kill us. Well, everything except for him and the supplements produced by his supplement company One Planet Nutrition, which he continually pushes readers to purchase supplements from. It should shock no one that Dr. Blaylock retired from neurosurgery to write a health column for Newsmax.
Most people who read these kinds of books read them because they have been diagnosed with a health problem, are concerned they may have a health problem, or they know and care about someone who is experiencing a health issue. While some of the advice in this book is undoubtedly solid (eat more vegetables and drink less alcohol), a lot of it is fear mongering nonsense. Without advanced medical or nutritional training, it's impossible for most laymen to separate out what is worth listening to and what should be discarded. While Dr. Blaylock does reference several studies in this book, he doesn't provide a list of sources or citations (aside from listing his own books) so readers can access those studies themselves.
The title of doctor does not confer upon an individual expertise in all fields of medicine and nutrition. As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Blaylock is simply not qualified to offer such strong opinions on liver health and nutrition without providing the sources from which he gleaned the knowledge he used to form those opinions. While I can't speak to Dr. Blaylock's expertise as a neurosurgeon, his expertise in conspiracy theories is nigh unmatched. Those looking for advice on liver health should stay far, far away from this book or, at best, take its advice with Himilaya-sized grains of (sea) salt.
A friend just lost her son who was in his 30’s to liver failure and it was devastating. What affects our liver? The short answer is everything. Alcoholism, Roundup, MSG, Aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, Acetaminophen are just a few of the things I read about in this book. Pesticides were probably the most alarming thing. Lots of info for anyone looking for helpful things to do. Thanks Humanix Books via NetGalley.
Wealth of information about the liver and its functions. I enjoyed the dietary information on what can help your liver and what harms it.
What did I like? This book is like an encyclopedic book of information on your liver and it’s functions. How the liver interacts with your other organs while doing it’s job of cleaning toxins from your blood. There is a lot of information to take away from this book if you have liver problems or just want to give your body a healthy boost. It’s an interesting read in an easy to understand style of writing.
Would I recommend or buy? I recommend it to people with liver disease, or if your just curious about the functions of the liver. I grabbed a copy to see what it said about alcohol consumption and liver to see if glasses of wine were bad for it. Ideally surprised about sugar chapter and why lowering sugar intake can help your liver. Tons of stuff I didn’t know but was curious enough to find out. Four stars!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher to read and voluntarily left this review!
I have been having some liver problems in the past few years, so I was immediately drawn to this book. It's very interesting and informative, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who would want to keep their liver healthy in a natural way.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As everyone who enjoys a tipple at the weekend (and perhaps a glass or two during the week, if we’re being honest) will be guiltily aware, our liver works extremely hard to keep our bodies healthy. But over time, poor diet, lack of exercise and that penchant for a drink or two can take its toll, impacting our health and wellbeing.
This compact book aims to demystify the liver and actively offer ways we can live healthier and more liver-friendly lives. The language is accessible and non-judgemental - the content is informational without an overload of medical terms that can be bewildering to those lacking a degree in medicine. Key terms and conditions are defined, giving you the knowledge you need to take action and improve your health and longevity.
There are lifestyle strategies, dietary recommendations and tips, as well as remedies and wellbeing suggestions. For anyone who wants to improve their liver health without staying in for the rest of their lives drinking tap water, this could be the book for you.
This book was so informative. I got it at my library to read. I have a fatty liver, and now I am trying to use some of the recommendations from the book. I have also purchased this as a reference book. I can then put notes in it and highlight the parts that apply to my situation. This is a must read for anyone who is fighting obesity.
I was diagnosed last year with NAFLD so when I saw this book available for request on NetGalley, I requested it right away. I felt like changes to the structure of the book would have made a big difference. There was a benefit to having each liver issue dealt with separately, but it also detracted from the whole of the book. Almost every liver condition benefits from the same supplementation regime so the book quickly got very repetitive. I felt that it would have been more accessible to readers if the authors had outlined the various liver conditions in the first half and then discussed the various supplements afterwards, mentioning at that point which conditions responded best to each one. In a nutshell, the answer is turmeric (nano-curcurmin)!
Everything you wanted to know is here in this book. Very informative with a great deal of technical facts. If you are suffering any sort of liver issue or think you might be, then read and understand more about the steps you can take. I liked the dietary facts and recommendations so you can read sections that are of concern or interest. Although written from an American view point, not much difference in any other westernised country. Thank you #NetGalley for the book to review.
I am so impressed by this book. Topics like this can typically go over my head. So I appreciated so much the style of writing that was both informative and interesting for such a heavy topic. I’ve grown so much in my appreciation of the liver. It’s definitely an eye opener. I’ll have to implement the suggestions throughout the book! Thanks for an ARC for an honest review.
This book explains everything about the liver and it's functions in depth. The last chapter gives diet recommendations to heal liver damage or maintain a healthy liver.
This is a readable and accessible book, written by a medical doctor but for the "common man" who may not have an extensive medical background or understanding. Many good things to consider and think about related to health and medical issues, specifically focused on those originating from/with your liver. As with any book such as this, it's important to DYOR and not take any ONE source as gospel...helpful to build your knowledge-base and, combined with other sources of information, can help you to come to your own conclusions and develop your own plan for better health. Much of the information in this book, I will say, you will probably never hear about from your own doctor or from within the "medical establishment," and so I appreciate the diverse perspective (i.e. natural remedies) this author shares. I will say, a lot of the info and things shared in this book are repetitive and some of it gets into the weeds a bit much for my liking but all in all, I'd recommend reading this to help improve and build your own knowledge base. Bottom line: don't blindly take the advice or strictly follow the instructions from any medical health "professional," including your own doctor(s)! Educate yourself so that you are equipped to be your own advocate and know what you're talking about. Your health is too important and NOBODY else will care about you as much as you do.
There is a lot of good information in this book. Most of,it,is a little scary as our lifestyles and farming practices are pretty set and would be really difficult to make large scale changes in. But…knowledge is power. Put some of the tips into use and reap the benefits.
Excellent, in depth guide to all kinds of liver issues from fatty liver disease to liver cancer to hepatitis and much more. Recommends lifestyle, dietary and herbal changes to treat and prevent them. Extremely comprehensive.
I liked this one. I’m not 100% behind all the supplements - I’m going to need to do more research here. But I think the initial recommendations are helpful.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I would have requested this one as I know the liver is a main gateway to health and we need to work really hard at keeping it healthy...there were many interesting parts to the book that I had never heard before but there were also some that I have been hearing my whole life...especially about Tylenol...there is no way our livers are not overworked in today's World with all of the pesticides in the environment, the chemicals in what has become our food, and the drugs we are being pushed to take. I will walk away from this one trying to be healthier about how I live my life...
Read the title and the blurb. They pretty much tell you everything that’s in the book. What it doesn’t tell you is that the author gives you this information multiple times in multiple places in the book until it becomes rather repetitive. What I find interesting is that the author is a neurosurgeon and not a liver specialist. I’ve also seen a lot of reviews that say the book and subject matter are written so as to be easy to understand. Um, not exactly. He still uses a lot of terminology that is not easy to follow.
He explains exactly what the liver is and how it works. Then he goes into problems with the liver and what cause these problems. He is definitely against people using Tylenol and not so much in favor of things like statin drugs. He also talks about our western diet (which I agree with) being too high in sugar and saturated fats. Throughout the book, he promotes various nutritional supplements all of which he points toward a specific website for you to get them. It makes me wonder how much of a vested interest he has in this company. I’m not saying his suggestions are wrong, but I am curious.
The author gives you detailed information on various liver problems, their symptoms, things in our lives that cause some of these problems, and much more. There is a lot of information here—very well detailed and with suggestions on how to fix the problem. There are also suggestions on nutrition from food and he is in favor of diets like the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet.
Recommendation: If you have liver disease in your family or any one of another liver-related issues, I do suggest you pick this book up. There is a lot of good information here. But caveat emptor. There’s also a lot of repetition and pushing you toward a specific site and supplements. But I will say, there is an extensive listing in the back of the book on health sites where you can find information on various conditions.
Disclaimer: I received a final and/or advanced reader copy of this book with the hope that I will leave my unbiased opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… My Opinions. I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”
A very detailed reference book on the functions of the liver, the nutrition and lifestyle that are necessary to keep the liver healthy, the various illnesses of the liver, the treatment options, and suggestions on supplements, foods and lifestyle changes that can help recovery. A lot of information to help anyone understand how to keep one’s liver strong and healthy.
The author writes in a clear and easy to understand way, making it accessible to anyone who is interested.
Disclosure: I received a free review copy via NetGalley.
Concerned with a family member’s liver, I knew any book by Dr. Blaylock would have excellent advice. I learned so much about the liver and easy solutions to cure many liver diseases. Highly recommend this book to anyone who has liver issues or just wants to know about keeping your liver healthy the natural way.
The Liver Cure by Dr. Russell L. Blaylock is an easy-to-read informative resource for maintaining a healthy liver. Practical knowledge as well as doable to implement. as a part of your daily routine for better health. I'm sure I will reference this book again & again. Thank you, Net Galley & Humanix Books, for the opportunity to read and review this book..
The Liver Cure is a very informative book and the medical technology is well explained and made easier to understand. There0s a lot of information but it is all interesting.
The pacing is very good and the book is an excellent reference guide.
Thanks to Russell L. Blaylock and publisher for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
Although I don’t need a “cure” at this time. This book I found very helpful to getting back on track after a period of “COVID don’t care” crazy eating to excess of unhealthy foods. After surviving Covid I now think my poor food choices over the last year or two could cause health issues of their own. Good motivation to eat a more healthy Mediterranean or DASH diet.
Helpful guide to demystify the "most misunderstood organ", Dr. Blaylock affirmed many things we know and shared his insights to consider for specific conditions and improving physical wellness. I am interested to review his peer-reviewed works and appreciate his included resources.
Learning to give your liver a break is important and necessary. It's informative but most of the information is out there in the world and can be found on the internet. I thought it was good information because it is all in one place.
I asked for this book on Netgalley because of a discovered medical problem in hope to find Some tips tombes better quickly. It is a great book for people werking in the healthcare like docters but for me as an individuel it was just to difficult to find a quick cure.
Very informative and laid out in a manner that makes it easy to read and then to later reference certain parts. I found that the suggestions and advice are easily implemented. A great resource and reference.
Fascinating and informative book for anyone who is interested in the liver and improving their overall liver health. A really easy book to read and follow.
