Tarot Academy #3

Spells of Flame and Fury

Rate this book
No one said it would be easy. No one promised we’d escape unscathed.

When Baz, Kirin, and I ventured into the dream realm in search of the sacred Arcana objects, we had no idea what the Dark Arcana had in store for us.

No idea that our darkest, most deeply-hidden terrors would follow us back home.

Now, Baz is haunted by monsters from the past none of us can see, let alone defeat. Kirin is wrestling with a heartbreaking accident that fractured his family a decade ago. Doc is compromising everything he stands for in hopes of gleaning even a scrap of intelligence about our enemy. Ani is flirting with disaster, desperate to claim the Wand of Flame and Fury before the Dark Arcana cause any more harm to the people he cares about.

And I'm just trying to get through the day, fiercely protecting the men who’ve become my family.

The men I love.

We survived the dream realm. And we’ve survived every day since, despite the terrors plaguing us.

But like our magick, everything has a cost. Even survival...

Sarah Piper is a witchy, Tarot-card-slinging paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. Through her signature brew of dark magic, heart-pounding suspense, and steamy romance, Sarah promises a sexy, supernatural escape into a world where the magic is real, the monsters are sinfully hot, and the witches always get their magically-ever-afters.

Readers have dubbed her work “super sexy,” “imaginative and original,” “off-the-walls good,” and “delightfully wicked in the best ways,” a quote Sarah hopes will appear on her tombstone.

Originally from New York, Sarah now makes her home in northern Colorado with her husband (though that changes frequently) (the location, not the husband), where she spends her days sleeping like a vampire and her nights writing books, casting spells, gazing at the moon, playing with her ever-expanding collection of Tarot cards, binge-watching Supernatural (Team Dean!), and obsessing over the best way to brew a cup of tea.

You can find her online at SarahPiperBooks.com and in her Facebook readers group, Sarah Piper's Sassy Witches.

So far, this one has been the weakest in the story. I didn’t feel like we got all that much character development. We did get some much needed multiple action tho 🥵

New enemies are always ready to arise as the old ones fade away and unfortunately Stevie and the guys learn this the hard way. Hell by the end two of her guys’ are completely under influence from the dream world so it’s not even one reality they’re fighting anymore. Stevie remains funny to me and a bit outlandish but as since proven she’s not the brightest bulb and has the biggest mouth when it comes to secrets. Everyone is always overhearing something they shouldn’t. If only a little common sense was used Stevie and gang could avoid a lot of issues they bring on themselves. Does end on a cliffhanger that kinda came out of nowhere but as the books do seem to be dragging for me, I’m glad to be reaching the end stretch, just two books left, think I can do this….

I was starting to get worried that only Baz and Kirin were being given attention, but we are finally getting more development on Stevie's relationship with Cass and Ani. I'm liking the plot, it doesn't feel secondary -as it happens in a lot of the reverse harem books-, I want to read the next one not only because of the relationship, but also because I want to know how the characters are going to deal with everything they are facing right now.

It's getting a bit too mutch. At the same time it is also becoming hard to read. I don't know what happened to the flow or the story, but it feels forced. Relationships between Stevie and guys also becomes cringy and feel very forced.

This is a short review about the five book series Tarot Academy.

I liked the plot in this series. It had enough twists and turns to keep my attention through the whole series. The heroine is endearing, the story compelling and there is real friendship and a lot of good time between the heroine and her harem.

I want to read more of Sarah's series and lucky for me, there is another one in my audiobook subscription.

damn

It just keeps getting crazier and better! I really hope Ani and Baz are okay! Can’t believe he wasn’t smart enough to know he was being manipulated! And of course so is Baz but differently

The more and more I've thought about this book the more disappointed I am in it. I honestly won't be reading the next one. I wanted to get into it. I enjoyed the background of it. Whos the bad guy and how do we stop this. Its the rest of the story that got to me. If you are fine with a lead "loving" because yes she tells at least 2 of the men she loves them which seems awful fast to fall in love with 4 men but hey thats just me. Then she sleeps with 3 of them and is dreaming of the 4th. I just flat out don't like books like that. She's a jealous (bc heaven forbid another woman likes ONE of her 4 men!!) Almost immature, bratty, "gifted, special snowflake" I kid you not thats what she calls herself. Gah! Then the story itself took longer in this one. They were in the dream world for like half the book just for her to come back and practically screw Baz in front of everyone so he will return from the DreamWorld. Not awkward at all.....and you guessed it a 3 way happened. Soooooo if your into that more power to ya. If you think loving 4 men is a little extreme and it's not love just lust then i don't think this book is for you.

Disappointed.
Book 1 was great, book 2 was ok, this one has me seriously questioning whether I’ll finish the series.
My pet hates are creeping in; repetition making the book overly long and unnecessarily boring, annoying unnecessary juvenile drama, idiotic behaviour, MMC’s cringe worthy internal dialogue about how special and amazing the FMC is (the lazy alternative to demonstrating her good traits through actions), and less than convincing relationship chemistry.
There is a plot here, it’s an interesting one, but it’s not coming through strongly enough. What started off with a good paced book in sharp focus has become soft, meandering and shallow. Such a shame as this series had great promise.

🎴 The story 🎴
Now that the gang is stuck in the dream realm, they have to find a way to get back home.

Honestly, I’m losing interest in this series. I don’t think I was ever super interested, but it’s getting worse. The only reason why I’m still getting through these books is because I have the audio, I definitely wouldn’t have finished if it wasn’t for the audio. I listened to it while drawing and shopping, so I do feel like I missed a lot, but I don’t think it matters, because the story is quite slow. I did like the dream realm part, it was honestly complete chaos, but great. There are just so many things in these stories that make me cringe, especially their little “cute” names for Stevie. Man are they cringy. What I did love, however, was the fact that I was so happy about that, and I was quite sad that it was over so quickly :( The story is still progressing slowly, Stevie has still barely had any lessons in magic, and I honestly still don’t have a clue what’s going on. I just can’t believe how promising this series started and how quickly it went downhill. I’m just lost tbh.

🎴 The characters 🎴
I’m still getting annoyed by Stevie. All of her actions are stupid – Baz saved her ass, but I was so fucking mad, I can’t even. Furthermore, Why would she make it up omg, I’m so done. I’m glad we finally learned some more about Baz – I still detest Janelle, but I also still like Carly. Glad Stevie is finally seeing that she’s not that bad. I like Professor Maddox and Cass, although I don’t understand what Cass would ever see in Stevie. I still don’t really feel anything towards the other guys if I’m honest, they’re all still really flat characters and I don’t really care. Especially Ani, he just seems like a very whiny child so far and I can’t seem to care about him at all.

🎴 Overall conclusion 🎴
I clearly didn’t love this. The plot is just non-existent, Stevie pretty much sucks, and the guys are all such flat characters that I don’t seem to care about anyone. I do like Cass, but just because he’s the prototype of a broody professor, which I normally love. I did enjoy the dream realm, although it was complete chaos lol, because it reminded me of The Raven Boys. I will be going through the rest of the series because the audios make it better, but yeah – not a fan.

Spells of Flame and Fury - Sarah Piper
Tarot Academy Book 3

Narrators: Stephen Dexter & Nicole Poole

Narrator Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

They both did an excellent job bringing this book and characters to life! I’m their fan for life!

My Review:
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶
Pages: 392
Genre: Fantasy
Tropes: Dark Fantasy, Witches Romance, Found Family

Stevie and the four mages have found 2 of the hidden treasures. They continue to face trial after trial and are under constant threat.

Their bonds between the five of them are very very strong. They will fight for each other, comfort each other and support each other and all five are bound by a deep love.

Stevie goes to battle to help Baz. He is haunted from the past and in the dream realm the trauma from the past was brought forward and he is back in traumas grip.

I highly recommend series and this book.

This book definitely starts off where we left off in the second. We are immediately immeshed into the action and story.

This story definitely takes on darker turns in this book, as Sarah Piper delves into some harsh topics such as death guilt and sexual abuse. She handles them very well as they're not completely addressed in some cases, but the reader has a good understanding of what's going on. This book was the shortest in comparison of how much time passes in the book, but a lot of information comes out.

This book gave me a lot of information, even though it's not necessarily my favorite as I wanted a little bit more interaction with her men and certain characters just set me off. The cliffhanger however for this book leaves me dying to read the next one as it completely came out of nowhere for me.

I just wish they could catch a break. Seriously, the anxiety started from page 1 all the way through with very little downtime. You get some relief in the middle of the book with Stevie and her men, but by the end I just wanted to wrap them all in bubble wrap and take them home. I can't even imagine how the next two books will go as they face whatever is coming next. The story is very interesting, semi-spicy, and thankfully the humor attempts to break up some of the anxiety. I do want to post a trigger warning for mentions of sexual abuse and the relating trauma/depression that was a brief but recurring theme throughout the past two books.

DNFd. Sorry. This is some serious angst and emotional sludge and I am just absolutely not in the right headspace for that. And it honestly really needed a trigger warning for both suicide (pretty extensive discussion about how her mother foretold her suffering great loss and killing herself) as well as self-harm (specifically cutting; Ani goes into detail about past self-harm to lit up his fire magic).

I might come back to this series some day because the whole tarot Arcana being people thing was really interesting but this is just… soul crushing emotional turmoil. I’ve been dreading picking it up for days before I finally gave myself permission to put it away.

I totally loved this book. From the moment that I started reading it I was taken away to a whole other reality which gave me a nice break from my everyday reality. It moves along at the perfect pace making for an enjoyable read. The characters are amazing and you will fall in love with them no matter what happens. You want to be there to see them succeed no matter what. The story will grab you and not let you go until you finish the very last page and then you are wanting more. This is a must read, no doubt about it.

It's review time 🎧
Warning ⚠️ : the last book in a trilogy. Fantasy.

Narrator score🎧 ; the narrators were good. The voices were on point and it was a good preference

Level of anxiety and sadness0😱😢: well, the book had drama quite much of it. Sadness? I don’t think i can call it a sad book.

The book itself📖: its the last book in the series and though I had a problem with some aspects of the book and the series as a whole, I can say that I enjoyed the books. It was a nice world. And I liked it.

5 stars of Spells of Flame and Fury by Sarah Piper. This is book three in the Tarot Academy series. “Only love has the power to dismantle our dears and set free the pure, limitless heart within.” The more I read, the more I am pulled into this world Sarah Piper has created. Book three starts where book two left us. This book deals with some dark subjects like sexual abuse. A lot happens in this book. Everything is starting to build up and the cliffhanger is a doozie. I need to know what the next book will bring.

Tarot Academy 3: Spells of Flame and Fury

❤️‍🔥❤️❤️‍🔥❤️❤️‍🔥❤️ LOVE ❤️❤️‍🔥 LOVE THIS SERIES!!!! LOVE this author. She doesn’t repeat herself like so many others do. Her plots twists are especially wicked. There is so much happening in this book! Especially in the dream realm but, I really enjoyed spending time in the dream realm with Stevie, Baz and Kirin- very satisfying with all the build up. We get to know more about everyone and the cliffhanger is brutal. I'm dreading/excited about what comes next.
I love this author… I definitely recommend this book!!!!!

I thought it was good. I didn’t finish it earlier in the year when I was reading the rest of the series. I think I just got a little tired of it and was really stressed so didn’t read much. Then after I just decided to read a different book. ANYWAY I just got around to finishing it bc I need to read 12 more books before the new year 🤩🔫. It was good tho and I think back on this series fondly. I’d say to read it. I saw another review saying it’s the weakest book in the series. That being said, will I read the rest of the series? Idk maybe in the new year.

I didn’t love this one as much as the others so far in the series. I understand the dream realm thing but I felt like there was a bit too much of it. Like I know we had to understand its depth for what’s to come but yeah still it took up almost half the book. Docs secrets are all that’s really left but I’m pretty curious about it. I, even more than the last book, want Janelle dead and I’m a little confused as to what Carly feels for baz. I do feel for him tho, the PTSD that comes with SA is absolutely no joke. I’m looking forward to seeing the next leg of this journey.

I absolutely could not put this dark academia/witchy/reverse-harem series down. I read the whole series as fast as I could get my hands on them. I loved the complexity of the characters, each with their own unique perspectives and depth of personality. The main character, Stevie, is one of my favorite literary females- spunky, independent, intelligent- you name it. The blend of tarot myth and slow-burning relationships kept me on the edge of my seat. I will definitely be reading more from Sarah Piper.

This book series had enough to keep me going, although it was a struggle at times. I found my thoughts drifting a bit while reading. I don't know if the book was repeating itself or if there were so many similar scenes that it just felt like deja vu. I finished the series and am open to reading other things by the author, but I'm not going to be madly looking them up as soon as this review is finished.

No no no, sadly this book missed the mark. 1 and 2 were good but this was over detailed in the storyline which slowed or nearly stopped the series and I got BORED. A lot of the detail could have been compressed and moved it along faster. The last chapter might have been the best and was setting us up for the next book. I really hope the next one moves at a better pace and I can get back to loving this series.

Like a mouth to the flame this series draws you in

So incredible is the story the author weaves... all the foreshadowing and hints coming together. I'm really enjoying the way the characters are growing closer and communicating with each other as they are drawn deeper together. Ani and Baz, I'm concerned for. Kirin, I'm feeling hopeful he'll come through intact. Can't wait to see how this continues to build.

These books always take me for an emotional journey. Stevie and her guys pick up where book 2 left off. Their adventure in the dream realm was breathtaking and I love how the author built that works in this book. The ending of this one was such a huge cliffhanger that I don't know what I'll do until the next one!

Don’t know if I’ll be reading the next book.

I found myself skimming through a lot in this story, they are rehashing their pasts over and over but none of them are dealing with any of the problems. It’s like they are going around in endless circles and it started getting really tiresome. They keep talking about it but nothing really changes and I am a little over it.

I'm enjoying this paranormal mystery series. The characters are all so different and have such intriguing stories. I really want to know how this series will end. This book kind of lost me for a bit in the middle as the story started to drag but then the drama picked up again and things got interesting.

CW pedophilia, child abuse flashbacks, self-harm/cutting, death

I kinda wish the author would have put this at the front of the book, so I'm leaving it for the next reader

I'll read the next book, but might not finish the series if the spice level doesn't rise.

Edit: Got 150 pages into the fourth book and gave up.
