Watching the authors try to reconcile the atrocities done to Indigenous peoples across the US while also bolstering American triumphalism was a mental trip, that's for sure.
Publishers seem to be on an “America” theme lately, as you may have noticed from our recent reviews. With it being an election year—added to the fact that we’re all being encouraged to stay in place as much as possible due to the pandemic—we suppose it’s only natural for the literary world to start examining what’s close to home. Since most of us seem to be battling an intense case of wanderlust, the latest book by DK Eyewitness couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Get ready to explore USA National Parks: Lands of Wonder.
This big beautiful volume takes us to the nation’s most scenic areas, all without gassing up the RV and taking to the interstate. Packed with gorgeous photography, this is perfect armchair travel, and reminds us that there is life beyond the four walls we’ve been staring at for the past several months.
Although it definitely hits all the high points (Yosemite, Grand Canyon, the Everglades, among others), the true gift in this volume is that it also transports us to parks many of us may not be familiar with that are equally spectacular. The book takes us through each park chronologically, based on the date each one was established and protected, beginning with Yellowstone in 1872 and ending with White Sands in 2019. Each section is packed with fascinating details, including little known factoids, lists of places of interest within each park like where to stay or which trails to hike, and even what wildlife you may encounter while visiting there.
We’ve loved the national parks ever since we were children, when our parents would take us to visit places like Mammoth Cave, Hot Springs, Grand Teton and Carlsbad Caverns. So our love and respect for these natural wonders was instilled from an early age. But that passion has continued throughout our marriage too, and paging through it has inspired us to seek out even more opportunities to visit places like Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains here in Texas, Denali and Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, National Park of American Samoa in Fiji, Dry Tortugas in Florida, as well as the Virgin Islands. There is simply no shortage of destinations to choose from.
History lovers that we are, however, we particularly loved “the story” section of this book which outlines why so many of the parks are tied to the legacies of Native American people, as well as the pioneers who risked everything to explore the vast western half of the nation. We learn how the idea for national parks originated in the first place and why it is important for the parks to be accessible to all. But we also meet the people who have worked to protect these natural treasures, including the park rangers themselves.
Whether you want to explore the wonders of America from your La-Z-Boy, or are intent on planning your next great adventure in a world post COVID, USA National Parks: Lands of Wonder is a marvelous addition to your home library and offers up loads of inspiration. All you need now is to pack the family into the SUV or buy that Airstream you’ve had your eye on.
This book provided a tour of things that you can see at the various USA National Parks. The book started out by providing some history of national parks, including notable Park Rangers. They provided a map showing where all of the different national parks are located. Each location was then profiled in the order that they were made into a USA National Park. The biggest national parks had a four page layout while smaller ones had two pages. Each profile included pictures of several main attractions, an overall description of what is in the park and the history of the park (mainly focused on what makes it unique), information about the animals found in the park, different activities that you can do there in the different seasons, descriptions of some of the top hiking trails, and things to see if you have one hour, several hours, or a day or more. Overall, this was an interesting read, especially if you plan to see these parks. I've seen many of these parks, and it was a fun trip down memory lane.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine.
Beautiful photographs, great explanations of the parks, highlights certain trails. This is not the kind of book you would use to plan a trip--each park has only 2-4 pages--but a great armchair travel read and good to dip in and out of and help you make a decision about where to go next! I appreciated the history about each park. The author does not shy away from the fact that so much of the park land was stolen from native peoples and helps to give insight into the ways the land was used by native peoples, was sacred to them, and continues to be an important part of tribes's culture today. Can't wait for my next Nat'l Park trip!
This book offers an overview of U.S.national parks, providing a history of the formation of each park and the impetus behind them. There are suggestions on what to explore, hiking trails, and other activities to consider when visiting a park. The guide is also flush with photographs of the beautiful sights.
3.5 stars. Great info on the parks and fun to read and imagine visiting new places. I just wish there were some regional lists or something since the book is organized based on the year each national park was founded.
If Teddy Roosevelt's idea was to show the greatness of the US, he nailed it. From sand dunes to glaciers, we are lucky enough to have it all. Now I want to visit them. All of them.
This book is easy to read cover-to-cover! There’s focus on women (&men) pioneers, who resided in the land first, and timelines. Each park had multiple pictures, a brief history, & what to do there. Some featured quick lists like “what to do if you have a single day, 3 days, or a week” and top hikes “easy, lake view, mountain view.” This was a recent publication which is excellent as it gives tips on which parking lot fills up before 8am and what are some less popular attractions within the park. Very good book!
