DOWN ON SECOND STREET carried me back to the innocence of my childhood in the East End of Dayton, Ohio. The many references to the neighborhood parks, restaurants, and stores plus the description of the family home had me daydreaming in the most pleasant way. If you want a peek into the past, this hop, skip, and jump into the early 1960's is a quick diversion. While the story is delightful, the mechanics of the book left this reader wishing for cleaner editing, as the point of view jumps and the page layouts are awkward at best. DOWN ON SECOND STREET is the author's voice. It was like conversations on a front porch.
What a tribute to your family! Author John Delehanty's memory is so crystal clear and growing up in the mid-America in the late 50's and early 60's was captured perfectly in his narrative. Being a child myself from this generation, also growing up in a small town in Indiana, I could relate to each word that was written. And hands down, Mr. Delehanty nailed it. I laughed and I cried while reading his family's story, and when I finished I grieved a bygone era. Kudos to this tight knit family. A job well done. What a gift!
Crudely written book but it was a fun trip back in time in east Dayton. The author is about my age and I enjoyed remembering growing up in a large family in the 50s and 60s.
