Paul J Bennett (b. 1961) emigrated from England to Canada in 1967. His father served in the British Royal Navy, and his mother worked for the BBC in London. As a young man, Paul followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 1983. He is married to Carol Bennett and has three daughters who are all creative in their own right.

Paul’s interest in writing started in his teen years when he discovered the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons (D & D). What attracted him to this new hobby was the creativity it required; the need to create realms, worlds and adventures that pulled the gamers into his stories.

In his 30’s, Paul started to dabble in designing his own roleplaying system, using the Peninsular War in Portugal as his backdrop. His regular gaming group were willing victims, er, participants in helping to playtest this new system. A few years later, he added additional settings to his game, including Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic, World War II, and the all-important Fantasy Realm where his stories take place.

The beginnings of his first book ‘Servant to the Crown’ originated over five years ago when he began a new fantasy campaign. For the world that the Kingdom of Merceria is in, he ran his adventures like a TV show, with seasons that each had twelve episodes, and an overarching plot. When the campaign ended, he knew all the characters, what they had to accomplish, what needed to happen to move the plot along, and it was this that inspired to sit down to write his first novel.

Paul now has four series based in his fantasy world of Eiddenwerthe and is looking forward to sharing many more books with his readers over the coming years.

An uncomplicated novel written in a simple, easy to follow style. Maybe suitable as juvenile fiction for older adolescents. There is romance between the main protagonists, a fire mage and a water mage, but it is pretty much PG rated. Otherwise it follows the tried and true format of a journey, a quest with adventure and fighting along the way.

Hidden gem alert! This book has a most beautiful mix of teeth-clenching action, tear-jerking tender moments and tastefully placed comedic relief. Super well paced, AND a first installment that has a complete arc, yet keeps me wanting more. The romance in this has me in a chokehold 😭 it's not the type that's rocky and full of challenge, it's just two solid partners who communicate well, are OP as heck and are just out there getting shit done together 😭 tbh I maybe need to read more books with healthy relationship dynamics cause this felt alien to me 😂

Onto the second one!

This book is amazing!
Athgar is a 20 year old Therengian, living with the Orcs after his village was attacked and his people taken and the village burned.
Kargan and his people traded with Athgar and his village and became friends. Kargan found Athgar barely alive and brought him back to the Orc compound where Athgar finds out he is a Fire Mage and is trained by a Orc named Artoch, a master of the flame.
Natalia has been at the Volstrum Academy for 10 years now and is ready to graduate. She is very powerful and could in time become the most powerful Water Mage around. When the Grand High Mage at the Academy tells Natalia what is now expected of her, Natalia decides to run. With the help of Stanislov the Mage hunter that brought her to the Academy, she escapes.
On the run Natalia meets Athgar and the adventures begins.
If you have read any of Paul’s other books you will not want to miss this book and series. His stories are amazing and the characters are well written. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I don't normally read fantasy novels. They are not my favorite genre. I will pick one up when I am between books in my preferred historical fiction or horror series. Ashes came along at just such a time. I got an ARC of it and decided to give it a shot. What a wonderful surprise. I really got into this story. I liked the characters and the plot kept me engrossed throughout. Athgar and Natalia are mages - he of fire and she of water and ice. Both come from tragic backgrounds - he survived an attack on his village and she is a "lowborn" who gets into a school to train mages and finds herself about to be used for nefarious purposes. They meet up by chance and the rest is excellent history.
There are strange creatures in the book, and orcs, but in this case the orcs are more than just shambling savages. I liked how the author developed them as a tribe and not just beasts.
I will definitely read the rest of this series.

This is the story of Natalia and Athgar each trying to create a life they want to lead, not a life being dictated to them by others. Life is an adventure and how you react to it, determines how happy you may be. This story is simply written and I find more suitable for preteens or young adults. The dialog is a bit stiff but the story is nice. I like how the different tribes/species were humanely portrayed -- both the good and bad. If you are looking for an adventure story that is not heavy, has a little romance (PG rated), and an easy read, then this book fills the bill.

It is just okay

The storyline was good and the characters were interesting but this book was so slow. Too much government intrigue type stuff going on that I became bored. Book is not for me.

Natalia is a Water Mage. Quite a strong one, Athgard is a Fire Mage. Once Natalia finished her education, she knew she had to get away from the academy of learning. She would never have a life of her own. They wanted to breed her to make more mages, but she would not raise her own children, nor have anything to do with them. Athgard was found by his friends, the Orcs, n the ashes of his destroyed village. Most of the villagers were killed but the strong ones were captured as slaves. It was his Orc friends who found the fire mark on him and showed him how to use his mage powers. He left them to seek out the ones who destroyed his village.
Natalia and Athgard meet under violent circumstances, become friends and go together in search of the ones who destroyed the village. There is a story of love here, much adventure requiring the use of magic, and treachery. There are pirates, and evil monks. More magic. There was always something happening, new places to see, new spells needed, and lots of action.
I found this book a hard one to stop reading. I read into the night as I just had to see what happened after each event. Well written story. I want to read the rest of this series for sure.

This is the story of two mages Natalia and Athgar. This is the start of a wonderful new series from this amazing author.
This is a very character driven story as we get to know these two characters; very well written and fleshed out well.
The plot and story line are well written and filled with lots of adventure and mystery.
I can't wait to read more in this series and follow our characters on their adventures.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The setting to this book was mildly interesting, and there’s a bit of world-building in the background. I liked the fact that the orcs were not an evil species, but just another kind of being, but I wonder then –why call them orcs? I enjoyed the parts where the two mages were learning their respective trades, one with jealousy and the other with comraderie. But the writing was not great, especially the dialog –and most of the book is dialog. It’s stilted and ill-formed, with so much stating of the obvious and repeating questions, and it was not very enjoyable. Fortunately, the adventure when they meet up was interesting enough to keep the flow of the story going, even if they are both so naïve that they were hard to swallow at times. My favorite part was probably the rescue on the river, where they used both fire and ice. The final battle was engaging, if not too intense. It was open-ended, of course, with a larger threat showing itself, which I expect to be a major part of the next book.

This is yet another great read by Paul J. Bennett! Athgar’s village is destroyed and everyone either killed or taken. He is saved by some orcs who take him in and teach him to control his newly awakened fire magic. Natalia is a peasant girl who has extremely strong water magic. She was taken to an academy to learn to be a battle mage. Athgar heals up and sets out on a quest to find his sister who was one of the ones taken from his village. On the way, he meets Natalia and together they work to solve the mystery of who would do such a terrible thing.

I really liked the characters in this book! I liked how the orca helped Athgar, and how they were good because so often the orc race is portrayed as evil. Athgar and Natalia are both very strong characters and I can’t wait to read more of their story!

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Kargen and Laruhk found Athgar in his burning head after some nights had destroyed his village and taking most of the people as prisoners for slaves. They took him to their shamaness and she healed him and their fire mage taught him how to be a fire mage. Then he left to find his people and the people who had turned them into slaves. He went to the city of Draybourne where he met Natalia Stormwind. The two of them started on a trip to find the man that destroyed Athgar's village and find the rest of his people and discover what the gods had for them to do. This is a well written book and I'm extremely interested in reading the prequels and reading the next book following "Ashes." Paul J Bennett is an excellent writer and draws you into the story so that you want to know what comes next. This is a very good book...

What a story. As expected Paul Bennett does not disappoint, his characters are fully fleshed, spectacularly believable, totally lovable. Athegar and Natalia are two different people who have suffered in their early life’s and have come out on top. Their adventures in Ashes are paving the way for the future. I for one cannot wait for book two. Paul Bennett’s book are now at the top of my most loved authors, along with JRR Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey and other epic writers. Grab your self a copy and discover a whole new world of epic proportion. Highly recommended.

Ashes, the first book in a new series by Paul Bennett, begins the story of Athgar and Natalia, two mages who are thrown together by circumstance. One searches for family; the other runs from family, but they rely on each other to find their way. Once again, Bennett plays the masterful storyteller, fleshing out the characters and weaving an exciting and compelling tale. Fans of Bennett’s Crown series will enjoy this one too. Can’t wait for the next one!

With each book, Paul Bennett climbs highwe on the list of my favorite authors. "Ashes" is no different. A great expansion to the universe of the "Crown" series. The magic and the world are familiar, the characters are new with struggles and missions of their own. One seeks safety, the other seeks revenge. their paths and desires cross, intermingle, and something new blossoms. Get this book and enjoy the read.

Ashes by Paul J. Bennett turned out to be a truly fine book. The mystery was there, the adventure of the story and the characters were like lost friends. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but the more I read the more I enjoyed it. It was historical in time with fantasy and magic abounding.
It took a tremendous amount of talent to create these characters with such a compelling story line.
Thank you Paul, everyone should read this.

I could barely make it through this book. The dialogue is so stilted that it makes the characters very two dimensional. By the time I finished, I couldn’t care less whether they lived or died! And if I had to see the hero called “the Therengian” one more time, I might have thrown my kobo across the room. What a bizarre way to refer to a character. I’m always looking for a series that I can sink my teeth into. This won’t be it.

Attention! I am only about halfway through the book, so my opinion may change later.

The premise was good, but the character interactions and conversations are so strange and unnatural. The two main characters have no deep conversations with each other, and it is never really hinted at that they might find each other attractive. And then suddenly they are together? That whole arc felt very underdeveloped and childish. The only hint was that one of them thinks the other one is pretty. But besides that, it was totally unexpected with no build-up whatsoever to this.

The female lead is fleeing from the magic school and hiding. But it has this weird pacing where she is super aware of being followed and checking in windows if anyone is following her etc. But then she is flaunting around her super powerful water magic and telling literally any stranger her real name and where she is going. So it would be super easy to follow her anyway. And this is never addressed. Very strange. And this gives off the vibe that the character is 10 years old? Which she isn't. I am not sure about her age but she has graduated from school and taken a lover.

There is no build-up for anything. She goes to a sea voyage and says to the captain that she knows how to calm the seas and direct currents to get paid for her passage. Then she confesses to her lover that she lied to the captain and that she doesn't know these things. In any other book series, this would have then been made a topic, how she is struggling with this and eventually found out but then overcomes the obstacles. But not here. She is just able to do all the things anyway. What is the point of this whole conversation even where she confesses she lied to the captain and doesn't know how to do these things when she then knows how to do it anyway?

The story follows two mages, Natalia, a water mage and Athgar, a fire mage and them learning about their respective magic. I liked that the Orcs were not depicted as evil and took Athgar in to teach him fire magic. I couldn’t really immerse myself in the story, the book is mostly dialog and it was slow and stilted, and a lot of repetition. I was interested in Athgar’s arc in which he is hunting for whoever attacked his village but it felt like not much progress was being made. Also, the romance between the two mains….it was like instant and I really couldn’t get behind it. I did listen to this on audible and the narrator didn’t help the dialog at all 🙃

A winning start to a new series. Good characterisation and the author's excellent writing style makes this a very readable start to the series. Part adventure, part fantasy (the two main characters are mages after all) and a little romance sprinkled in makes for a most enjoyable read. My only complaint: I have to wait for the next part in the series to come out. A sure bet!

Looks like the start of another great series from Bennet. I have really enjoyed the Crown series and this one looks like another hit! Kind of obvious while getting backstories that the two will come together somehow but not in a boring predictable way, am looking forward to seeing where this road leads. Paul Bennett hits it out of the park with his new series opener. Great new characters in a brand new situation. It leaves me wondering if his two story lines will connect in the future. I am ready to read more about this one.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review and asked to read this book before the prequel. In my opinion, you should read the prequel first.

Lots of action and the use of magic to get Natalia and Athgar out of danger time and time again. Their foes become stronger and stronger. Will their magic be enough to overcome them? A gripping tale across the continent with lots of different foes seeking their lives.

DNF in chapter 3. Much of the writing style is one character tells another character what they already know so that the reader will know it. Doesn’t draw me in.

Natalia’s earliest memories are of a woman she does not know, for when she was young, she was taken from her mother and placed in the Volstrum, a school for those gifted with water magic. She grew up given a drug to suppress her powers, but her powers would not be easily suppressed as she built up a tolerance for the drug. She was trained as a battle mage and could be the most powerful mage the school has ever seen. But upon her graduation, the price, the service that they would have her do is just too high, and so she ran away from the school, from the family. In her attempt to flee, she ran into a fire mage named Athgar, who tried to help her. His power was released the day his whole world was torn from him. It was a good thing he was a friend of the orcs because that is who found him, healed him, and trained him in the arts of the flame. Now, together, they worked together; he was looking for his family, and she was running from those who would claim her and control her.

What an interesting origin story for our main characters who fall in love with each other, their first love. The physical world-building is enough to let you know what is around. The ethereal world-building is mostly personal, but there are occasions when it adds to the scene. The character’s interaction is believable. The character’s history is given as part of the story in such a way as you can understand their motivations.

This sword and sorcery coming-of-age tale has plenty of action and adventure with some fast-moving but clean open-door romance. I give this first installment of an epic tale four stars out of five stars.

A beautiful epic fantasy first book in a series with elements of both sword and sorcery and a story which follows the lives of two very different characters from very different backgrounds. These are Athgar, the Therengian, whose village had all been burnt to the ground, his fellow citizens taken as slaves whilst he was saved by orcs from the ashes, discovering he was a master of the flame and vowing he would get vengeance on the one ordering this horrendous deed, the other is Natalia, an orphan who was taken to the Volstrum, where she trained for many years to finally graduate as the most powerful water mage ever. She decides to run away from the Stormwind family who had given her their name and who now felt they owned her and could dictate her life. She was adamant no one would take away her freedom to choose. These two unlikely characters meet up and fall in love and travel across the seas, one to seek vengeance and the other to seek safety in far away lands, however the spy network used by the powerful families is wide as is that of the church, some of whose members are involved in the slave trade and are as corrupt as ever. This is a thrilling tale with pirates involved, a slave trade and romance thrown into the mix as well. I find myself thoroughly enjoying the story and look forward to travelling on with our heroic characters through the 2nd book in the series!

I fully expected to dislike this book. It was a very pleasant surprise that Not only did I NOT dislike it, but i actually LOVED IT.

This book is very well written, The Author thought it out extremely well. It has an element of mystery to it as well as lots of action and adventure. In this story the book explores different sorts of magic, how it is learned and/or trained.

As an avid reader of fantasy books, we have come to think of orcs as evil, chaotic monsters. This book shows them in a different light. Not by changing the mythos of Orcs, but instead by looking at them from a different angle. I Love how the Author points out that you, the reader, are reading in your own language, but the orcs are speaking in their own language. So you come to understand that when they speak in their own language they speak very well and with a lot of intelect. When we hear them attempt to speak the common language, one that they dont know , they sound stupid (as most people tend to think of orcs) when in fact they simply dont know the language is all and to them when we attempt to speak orcish must sound just as stupid.

This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys D&D sort of things, while this book is not set in any official D&D setting, it fits in very well and is a very enjoyable book to read.
