Gryff is a married man, a professor, and a soon to be father now. But his life is still far from ordinary, boring, or safe. Especially when massive, mega monsters start appearing on his honeymoon.
This story was a solid 3/5 going into the first monster fight, and dropped to 1/5 from there. Maybe it's just me, but i was really bothered by the narrative. Like it was a decent story, but written badly. Several of the scenes in the second half i felt could have been written way better.
And then there was the annoying behaviour of many of the characters. I mean, some things you have to take as given, like Gryf's obtuseness in most situations except battle, and Layla's hyper rambunctious mannerless behaviour. But shit, that stuff was getting annoying. Layla is like a family dog that keeps shitting on the living room floor, and instead of teaching it otherwise you're just 'oh well, dogs will be dogs". Her constant desire to be center of attention in every scene really gets on the nerves after a while, especially when Gryf is trying to have an important conversation. For god sakes, someone teach that girl situational restraint. Spoilers: And Nia, wtf. She almost kills herself fighting a monster with a new power. She would have LITERALLY died if Gryf hadn't discovered a new power in himself as well. Poor dude was frantic for so long and then when all is said and done....fucking nothing. I'm not saying he should have gotten mad at her afterwards for being so fucking reckless, but not even a "be more careful next time"? Gryf is way to even keel with his women. Quit being a simp and don't be afraid to chastise them if the situation warrants it man Especially considered she gets mad at him a little while later for taking off to fight the mega monsters alone, which he never even got to do, then coming back right away. And let's not forget the final monster fight, and Gryf's decision to withhold all of his Archons from the battle "just in case" he needs them for something worse down the line. Hey Gryf, a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush, defeat the threat you have with extreme prejudice, don't half ass it for some greater threat which may never (AND DIDN'T) show up. How many red shirt soldiers died because Gryf didn't unleash his Archons. What a waste of life. At the very least, i seem to remember Veopa had a monster bat that could replicate itself AND had a poisonous bite that could kill other monsters. Oh, i don't know, that MIGHT have come in handy. Pretty dumb.
I could go on, but sufficed to say this is the worst book of the series, taking the crown from Summoner 11, and if i wasn't so deep into the series now, it might have made me drop the series altogether. As it is, i was in a bad mood for quite a while after reading this mess. 1/2 star out of 5.
For two books now, the author has done nothing about the main plot of the book. Nothing. Nothing to do with the archons, nothing to do with the beastmaker prophecy, Nothing! Instead the book is just filled with repetitive scenes upon scenes about sex. Yes sex is fun, but making two books in this series focus on just sex and babies is just straight boring. I just don't give a fuck at this point. It was cute for a short while but after like the hundredth time of baby talk I just wanted to toss my tablet. Who cares at this point about the women in Gryff's harem. Literally all of them can only think about two things. That is it. Nothing else. Just sex and babies. Jeezus H hibing Cheese but that is ridiculous. Like, what is the difference between Eren, Layla and Saira, they all are essentially the same character. After book 14, the action elements in this action fantasy series has been to few, and far between. Focusing on babies and not the plot is just not it for me.
(Don't get me wrong here, it is not a bad thing for the series to have a short intermission to focus on these things, but 3 books on babies and putting the plot on the sidelines isn't entertaining. At least for me)
Then my second complaint about this book in particular is the no communication trope. In romance novels, this trope is annoying but here, it is so fucking pointless. Every time Gryff should do something, he is like nah I just rather live in a constant state where my women and I should dance around each other. Gosh man but literal months went by in the book and literally nothing happens. This dude just chickens out.
Thirdly, this author really doesn't know how to write a scene once it doesn't involve sex. Imagine writing a scene, that can build on the mysteries of the world and potentially having one of the main female characters being the center of this phenomenon, but is just ruined by some pointless attempt at comedy. It just cheapens the story by under cutting a more or less serious scene with a pathetic excuse for comedy.
For instance, the women of Gryff's harem just casually walks in when Gryff has to explain what happened in the woods. The mystery and intrigue I was feeling to learn more about what the hell happen just disappeared as these out of timing stupid fucking characters just barges in and derails the scene. Normally I don't have a problem with their personality but there is a time and place for everything. You get what I mean, a potentially interesting development is under cutted by just adding more and more people to a scene that didn't need to be there. There are more instances of scenes that are just ruined by the characters weird ass actions but I digress.
Fourthly, why do authors always make it out to be that the main character is strong, yet when battle comes they are so useless. Like everyone, including Gryff believes he is strong yet when it is time to prove the sentiment, he is so pathetic. He has so much power yet doesn't use it. He has so much potential yet takes a backseat to everything and then gets mad when the people in charge doesn't agree with him. He is the chosen one, yet acts like a child. The way the author hypes up the main character conflicts with the actions of the character throughout the story.
The last thing I didn't like is that the archons are barely existent in the story. To me, their personalities and lore are the best part of this Summoner series but for the past two books they have disappeared. Poof. Gone. Bye Bye. Imagine, the best part of the series is replaced with pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of baby talk. This is just sad. We get barely a paragraph of them and their interactions with Gryff (which I found to be the best part of this entire book) and their view on the world and what is happening is so interesting, it is a shame they are used so sparingly instead we just get chapter after chapter after chapter after chapter of pointless baby talk and slice of life filler.
P.S This is an action, fantasy, harem series, so the target audience is primarily going to be young adult men. At least for most of my friends as well as myself, aren't gonna enjoy a series with three books dedicated to baby talk. We literally just want three things, an interesting plot to follow, interesting girls in the harem that feel unique and have impact on the story (like Nia) and some cool actions scenes.
Gruff has the Archon Phi in giant form battling the giant monsters and she was kicking butt. The because Phi was giant she shook the ground as she fought, like the giant monsters were not already doing that, then Gruff has to call her back because the soldiers were losing footing. How can someone who writes so well seriously lack common sense? Not to mention the fact that Gruff has these powerful Archons and new powers yet he does not train to use them or does not utilize those new summons and powers but continues to use the same old monsters. Gruff doesn't even use the more powerful monsters he does have hardly By now he should be able to use the Belial and Sun God together for battle its book seventeen already. This is the best story this author writes but it's getting monotonous the way he is dragging the best parts of the character powers out and writing really stupid story lines to keep from using them more. I deducted my rating for this reason.
Two thing I hate the most - cliffhangers and fillers! Some nice slice-of-life and a little character progression(like last book). Rest is filler until last 30 min that ends in a cliffhanger. Pretty much to story progression at all. The researcher secrets and the archon Child nagging needs to stop! Its just annoying.
The story although good is getting tedious. I’m on the side of the archons here. I am not trusting sleet or the grand mage, arwyn and ashla. I think what they’re doing is trashy. I don’t like dishonesty. I can see the point because Gryff has the archons in his head but they can at least tell him about his parents. You don’t have to fully read him in but without him they’d never have gained ANY of that knowledge let alone even be alive. Sleet would be dead, the grand mage and his family would be dead and pretty much the world as they know it would have been in ruin and under Phi’s rule. They owe it to him to explain his lineage. He’s proven his worth, loyalty and grit plenty of times not only to the world but to his team and they constantly turn their back on him and don’t support him. The way the book ended was just silly in my opinion. The archons always sensed each other yet they didn’t sense the awakening of the other 4? None of these goddesses could explain why the existence of these mega monsters are walking around with no rift in sight and being controlled and paraded around like that without these thousands upon thousands of year old deities to figure out maybe another goddess is behind this? This book did a lot of reaching in my opinion. Also I didn’t like the fact that two pregnant women were in battle… you’d also think changing shape from human to hawk could put stress on the fetus. Also Nia can now do those elemental overboost spells with ease? Last time she almost died… this time she’s able to do it continuously without a potion, without burnout etc… meanwhile Gryff is battling mana depletion… and wouldn’t use archons in a battle with mega beasts… things he’s never fought nor seen on the battlefield ever in the history of the modern aged world. Lots of reaching.

Summary: Skip to chapter 17 and avoid the dreck that is this book. Nothing of note happens before then anyway.
Book 16 was a nice break, I actually got a little mad for Gryff as he went back to school and was immediately shoe-horned back into a sophomore student status. Now half way through book 17 I AM SO FUCKING BORED! It's all vanilla breeding and babies. Nothing interesting is happening AT ALL!
I'm wondering what happened to Varleth's woman Deresa, she hasn't been mentioned since the begining of book 16? Why is Gryff totally ignoring the Archons? Where is Mur, was he just totally abandoned when Arwyn and Ashla went away? Is Gawain's last name Maddox or Madox? When the author says "the banisher" in a scene with both Mati and Varleth which one does he mean?
After the mid-point the battles begin again, but it seems the rules of this world's magic have changed. Suddenly, monsters have energy and resummoning them when they've already been used isn't a drain on the summoner's mana but merely results in a weaker monster. Continuity feels lost and Gryff is no where near the awesome mage he had become by the end of book 15.
I'm not sure about the whole "Giant Monster" trope. Feels kinda like Pokemon meets Voltron with some Dragon Ball thrown in with all the mana crap that's in this book. But anyway,
So i haven't read the books in a bit,and i got back to book 13 the other day and binge read 13-17 over the course of a week. And as much as i loved that gryff managed to get 3 archons. I feel like all the emphasis on his girls getting pregnant was a bit much. Especially given that around the same time it happened in the metal mage series as well. Frankly i feel like the author is having a child of their own, and kinda forcing it down the readers throat. Every chapter seems to have sex in a lot of detail. to the point I'm just scrolling past it because there's just too much now that pregnancy is being pushed so heavily. And i feel like its a shame Gryff hasn't experimented more with his summons sharing ability. like could he have a speed slug on one person and still transfer power to him? what about his baraqor? Could his pyreworm allow him to project his voice? Toward the end of this book Gryff needed to fly,why not the vulture he personally captured when he surprise caught Utuni? Personally I'd like to see less focus on Gryffs sex life and more on his abilities as a summoner. His adventures in the clans were ALL about his new found powers but i don't feel like gryff got to flex his new powers.
I'm usually a fan of this series, and of late it's been very good, however this book was a big step back. We got back to the main storyline of the Archons, and learn more (kinda) about Griff and the Beastmaster prophesy, but so much of this book had characters (mainly Griff) doing things completely against his character. I'm hoping we learn that the Archons he's trapped in his mind, or the several he's now facing off against, are manipulating his emotions, or else it's a terrible character progression. For one, he knows that some of his most trusted allies are meeting to discuss a research project that is vaguely about him, but more importantly it's sensitive information that the Archons can't learn about. And yet, he goes and eavesdrops, which didn't effect the plot much at all. The bigger one was when he wants to fight over a dozen of these massive monsters with only 5 other mages, all while he and Mia could barely defeat two. When his team talks him out of it, he goes back alone to fight them, honestly believing he can do it
A cliffhanger ending that leaves you wanting the next volume
I have a feeling that this series might be coming to an end, which would be sad because it is still one of my favourites by this author and it is not getting old or stale at nook 17. More hints about the beastmaker prophecy and we all know who that particular person is going to be. We get more clues to Gryff's past and finally find out who his parents are, but that too is a teaser. I can't help but feel that the good intentions of sleet are going to come back and kick him and humans in the pants with regards to Gryff and the prophecy, but will have to wait and see. Some tension within the harem and more great surprises for Gryff and his family. Can't wait to see where book 18 goes and hope that this series has plenty more books left in it.
Griff has his wives and girl friends to keep his time filled until another terror is unleashed upon the ones he loves and those he protects. Again he steps up to be the hero that he is and strives to be. Though in the end he puts himself into more danger so that his friends and loves into danger.
Another fun story with the love of friends and lots of sex. I enjoyed the story and couldn't believe it ended when it did. I was ready for more.
I have been enjoying this series for a while now. While the last book was a slight breather in the action, this one introduces more antagonists and also sets up for many of the answers I’ve been waiting for. I’m hopeful that the next book in the series doesn’t take too long to come out, and starts to bring some of the answers to Gryffs past that I’ve been waiting for.
Highly anticipating this book had paid off! New monsters, developing relationships and more secrets to entice you in. We finally get a glimmer of the mystery surrounding Gryff, which is enough to whet the appetite and keep you wanting more!
Love this and REALLY looking forward to answers in the next book!
While I am no writer of reviews, i just re-read/Audibled the first 13 and read read the the last four (14, 15 16, 17) I eagerly await book 18. I have got to find out what/where this latest development leads. What exactly do the Archons want ? Are the Headmaster and Grand Mage afraid FOR or OF Gryff ?
Wow. # 17 and still interested. Like it when the whole crew is together and others are showing their strengths. Longer threads often lose the dynamics that keep it interesting. Worried that the time differential between realms will make Gryff come back years later. Interesting but mean, other outcomes can work also. We'll see....
I really enjoyed reading this book. Just when things seem to settle down for Gryff, new monsters arrive to cause havoc. This new threat wants only one thing him. The story and characters continue to be interesting, intriguing, and engaging. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. This one is a must read.
This book had its ups and downs. It started off a bit slow and the argument in the middle a bit weak but I like where this story is developing and can't wait to see what happens next
What can I say, although I like all of Mr Valls books this one is by far my favorite. This chapter just smacks you in the face with the next adventure and man I would never have guessed that the series would go in this direction. Keep up the great work sir!
A nice addition to the series. Lots of fun and some mysteries for our hero with a very interesting cliffhanger at the end. Will our hero learn more about his family and himself?
I'm glad the monster fighting is coming along again. The first half is very relaxed with the second half of the book having more fighting action. Plenty of adult action throughout the book. Will get the next book when it comes out.
As a series that continues to entertain I'd like to state there was a lot of fluff in this book, and while it did eat up a lot of the pages, the rest of the plot did advance. Looking forward to the next books
A good ending to this book There's a chance for knowledge there's a chance to turn the tides but there's also a chance to crumble because now all the Archons are together in 1 location
And that’s great! This pushes the story in an entirely new direction AND sets up the series to answer some questions that has been hanging over our heads forever. Here’s hoping more doesn’t just keep dangling in the next one
Now it gets really interesting, the saga nears its end.So many enemies,so many people to save,so many children to father, will be have time?.Very well done Mr Vall.
