In the Pines is the 7th book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series and my third one by Kendra Elliot. The other two were short novellas, but I really like her attention to the emotional side, family lines and family dynamics to counter-balance action and very fast pace.
A teenage boy comes up to police Chief Truman Daly, Mercy's husband, and tells him that his mother Bridget Kerr and his 18two-month-old sister Molly are missing. Bridget had gone to visit her brother whom the children had never seen or heard of. As there is a missing child involved and two minors left behind, Truman involves FBI ( Mercy) straightaway and Mercy quickly finds the children's uncle closer to home than anyone could have guessed. Bridget disappeared/ran away from her family fourteen years ago and her brother knew nothing about her whereabouts, her lifestyle or his nephew and nieces. The case happens to coincide with a National Treasure Hunt that brings countless hopeful to Truman and Mercy's little town. The clues left by an eccentric millionaire are confusing and seem to lead to the pines around the town. Truman's son Ollie and Mercy's niece also have their theories and try to decipher enigmatic instructions. But, very soon it becomes clear that there are some very dangerous people involved. In the Pines is fast- paced, action-packed, with a well-thought-through plot and interesting characters. No wonder it kept my attention from the first page to the last one. Would love to read more from the author! Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.
In the small town of Eagle's Nest, Oregon, there's more than just a missing mother and her young daughter. A thrilling treasure hunt for a whopping 2 million dollars adds another layer of excitement. This book is an absolute whirlwind, keeping you on the edge of your seat and challenging your brain skills. I couldn't get enough of it!
I remember several years ago that a Discovery TV show, "Expedition Unknown" with host Josh Gates did an episode on a multi-millionaire who buried a treasure then left clues on how to find it. No one ever has, I don't think. The show interviewed the man's friends and treasure hunters who hadn't given up. Now, Truman has a similar treasure hunt taking place in Eagle's Nest, Oregon. Big exception: someone has murdered one of the treasure hunters. I must admit, I am a big sucker for a treasure hunt plot. They are my catnip. This story isn't really about a hunt, but about what the greed can do to people. And, even though I figured it out, I just loved this book.
Police chief, Truman Daly has his hands full when the small town of Eagle's Nest, Oregon is overrun by treasure hunters seeking the $2 million dollar prize buried by an eccentric millionaire. Into this craziness a boy approaches Truman with the shocking news that his mom and baby sister have been missing for over two weeks. Truman contacts his wife, Mercy Kilpatrick, and the FBI, which handles missing children, and they start to unravel the pieces that tell the tale of a bizarre family. In finding out what has happened to this family, Mercy must confront their deadly family secrets.
With the treasure hunters causing havoc all around the town, Turman now must solve the murder of a treasure hunter and he doesn't know why the man was killed. He was in possession of a binder that other hunters were sure would lead to the treasure and someone had already tried to steal it. But was that why he was killed?
My thanks to Montlake, Publisher, and Kendra Elliot, author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
The town of Eagle's Nest is going through some upheaval. Police Chief Truman Daly is not used to so many people descending on the small town. A millionaire buried treasure somewhere in the United States. A poem he wrote was published upon his death, giving clues to the whereabouts of two million dollars. Many people believe the clues point to Eagle's Nest. Now the police are getting calls about vandalism, trespassing, and property damage. When a body of a treasure hunter is found behind a dumpster, Truman decides to help Deschutes County Sheriff's Detective Evan Bolton with the case.
Meanwhile, teenager Theodore Kerr asks for help finding his mother and baby sister who disappeared over two weeks ago. Truman's wife, FBI Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick, begins searching for the missing mother and child, looking for clues that may point to the last place they were seen.
This is the 3rd book in the Columbia River series and the 7th book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. I'm so happy to be back reading about Mercy, Truman, and their family and friends. I've missed them and wish the author would write faster. I loved the treasure hunting aspect of this story. It brought many strangers to town and gave us a bunch of suspects for both cases. The mysteries had a couple of good twists. I guessed part of what exactly was happening; but didn't figure out everything. My rating: 5 Stars.
There are books that feel like home and characters that feel like family. Harry Potter, Mercy Thompson, Amber Farrell...anything written by Sarah Lyons Fleming.
And Mercy Kilpatrick.
These books just speak to me and I love them so much I don't even know how to be objective.
In the Pines is the 7th in the Mercy Kilpatrick series and the third in the Columbia River series. A nationwide treasure hunt with a $2 million prize has people showing up in Eagle’s Nest disrupting the peace. Not just traffic calls and trespassing, but theft, fights and public shootings. And then, a murder. It’s true that greed brings out the ugly in people, as Evans thinks. Meanwhile, a young boy comes to Truman’s office as his mother and baby sister have been missing for weeks. Mercy is called in since it’s a matter for the FBI. Turns out the family were preppers and the missing woman is Detective Evan Bolton’s long lost sister. This story is really more of a collaboration. It focuses more on Police Chief Truman Daly, Mercy’s husband and Deschutes County detective Evan Bolton. There are plenty of red herrings and several twists. While one twist was pretty obvious, another was not. This is a quick read and one that kept me engaged throughout. It’s always difficult for someone who has read all previous books in a series to state whether a book could work as a stand-alone. Elliott gives some background, but not excessive. Still I think it would work although new readers wouldn’t have the benefit of all of Mercy’s background, let alone her unique family structure. My thanks to Netgalley and Montlake for an advance copy of this book.
This was a first I have read anything from this author. I loved this book so much because I tracked down it a simple read and I felt immediately associated with the characters. I intend to read more by Kendra Elliott.
FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick, her husband Chief Truman Daly and Detective Evan Bolton have their hands full as the town of Eagle’s Nest, Oregon, is overrun with treasure hunters.
I was so excited to see Mercy and Truman again. I confess I love this series and Elliot brought us all kinds of excitement from wee one’s in danger to murder.
A national treasure hunt for two million dollars has Chief Daly and his team busy. Businesses are overrun and tempers are high. He’s fielding calls from squatters on land to shots fired. When a young boy comes into the cafe’ claiming his baby sister and mother are missing, Daly calls in Mercy. The family is living off the grid and Mercy soon makes a startling discovery.
The tale that unfolds offered plenty of twists and the suspense increased when threats are made and a body is found. It was great to spend time with Mercy, Truman and even their children. We got to spend time with Detective Bolton as he deals with a murder-mystery and family issues.
Elliot’s stories are well-paced, and the mysteries proved interesting. She delivered plenty of suspense as Mercy found herself in danger. I don’t think I will ever grow tired of this series.
I was SO happy to see another Mercy Kilpatrick book!!!!!! Mercy and Truman are like old friends. Always great to see them. Another excellent read from Kendra Elliot. ;)
I am a big fan of the entire ‘Mercy Kilpatrick’ series. When I discovered that Ms. Elliott would be bringing back their characters in In the Pines, I was excited. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed with this story.
I was hoping for some romance (after all, they finally married at the end of A Merciful Promise) with a good combination of suspense. Instead,
I am going to tag this, 'it's me not you' because of all the five star reviews. Clearly, I am not with the majority of readers this time.
Thank you to NetGalley, Kendra Eliot and Montlake Books for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I could only imagine how crazy people would go and what they would do if they thought they knew where hidden treasure was. That's what happened in Eagles Nest when national news names it as the resting place of hidden treasure when a very wealthy man left it in his will.
I liked the mystery in this one and I really enjoy how this author weaves all her series together, in this one we get more of FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick and Police chief Truman Daly. They make a great team!
It’s a relentlessly entertaining brain candy beach book, full of suspense, characters you love, and nothing that makes you think too hard. Lest you think that’s an insult, it’s not. It’s the kind of fun book that you just rush through and enjoy just about every moment of it.
I would have liked a wee bit more about the treasure hunt (it’s what made me want to read the book), but I loved trying to figure out who was doing what and definitely worried for some of our characters.
It was amazing how this one just kinda snowballed, until at the end all these little things came together because of a few evil, greedy people. It was great to see families reunited, to see kids realize the world is bigger than they thought and not all bad and for the Eagle's Nest to be able to go back to the quiet town it is. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of some of these characters in future books in different visits.
I give it a 3.5. I really liked the story and the characters but I guess it wasn't thrilling enough for me. I like the real crazy stories and plots that stress you out front to back. Lol. But it keeps you interested pretty consistently. I liked the plot of the treasure hunt because it's not common in thriller books.
This the first book I’ve read (listened to) in a while. I’m happily pleased to announce it hit on all cylinders. Mystery and intrigue that keep me entertained and glued to finishing. I will say I figured out some before we were told but throughly enjoyed every second. Great narration.
I picked this up because it’s the third book in Kendra Elliot’s Columbia River series. But it’s also book 7 in her Mercy Kilpatrick series, which I haven’t read. I’m definitely going to read that someday because I enjoyed Mercy and Truman and I’m curious about their story. Mercy also appears in book 2 of the CR series, so I knew who she was.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat a few times and it was always moving forward. Mercy in an FBI agent in the Bend, OR office. She was called in to investigate a missing woman and child case. There is also a $2M treasure hunt going on and it has brought a lot of outsiders into the small town of Eagle’s Nest. Tension is running high for the sheriff’s department when one of the treasure hunters turns up dead. Does Mercy’s missing person case overlap the murder case?
The only part that got me confused was keeping all the names of all the characters straight. Sometimes I had to do a search for certain names so I could remember who they were. Other than that, the story kept me completely engrossed! Since I’m in Oregon, I was trying to solve parts of the riddle right along with everyone from the treasure hunt. Of course, some of the places were fictitious, but the area is not. There was a part of the scavenger hunt poem when I thought they were going to end up in Sisters, OR. Then seek the pears that overtook the plains And meet the sun who led me to the high ridge I instantly thought of Sisters because it’s in Deschutes County near Bend and that’s where this takes place. I had interpreted “pears” as “pairs” and came up with Sisters. Yeah, my mind was going…oh well. The story was very clever!
This definitely won’t be my last Kendra Elliot book. I eagerly await the next installment to the Columbia River series. But while I wait, I’ll have the Mercy Kilpatrick series to keep me busy.
In the Pines, by Kendra Elliot, is the Third installment in the author's Columbia River series, and can also be considered the Sixth installment in the author's Mercy Kilpatrick series since this story features Mercy, Truman, and Detective Evan Bolton. It has been six months since Mercy and Truman were married, and now they have an adopted family of 4, along with Ollie, Kaylie, and various animals.
In The Pines, the third book in Kendra Elliot's brilliant Colombia River series, brings some familiar faces back together. As Detective Evan Bolton, FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick and her husband Chief Truman Daly come together to investigate two cases. That don't seem to have anything in common. Except for the fact the small town of Eagles Nest has been inundated with treasure hunters.
But that isn't the only problem facing this trio as a young boy Theodore has approached Truman asking for help as his mother Bridget and baby sister Molly have been missing for two weeks, and when Mercy is called to help with the search she makes a startling discovery and a whole can of worms is opened.
And when a body is found and Theodore and his sister Charlotte are targeted the three start to wonder if they will find Bridget and Molly alive. But are these two kids really telling them everything?
And with a riveting story, plenty of twists and lots more familiar faces. This was a really enjoyable read and a great revisit to some of my favourite characters.

5.0 stars. Loved it! Thank you Kendra Elliott for bringing Mercy and Truman back! (Ollie and Kaylie too, of course.) Great addition to both Columbia River and Mercy Kilpatrick series. Thrilled with the author's note that there will be more to come, since we thought we'd seen the last of Mercy. It was a long wait, but worth it. Complex case with so many unknowns, missing family members, dead bodies and some wild treasure hunting clues. I devoured this story, with no idea how it would resolve until the very end. Satisfying conclusion and I can't wait for more.
Another well written easy to read chapter in Mercy's life. These characters feel so familiar now after reading the series from the beginning. Loving following Mercy and her family and seeing where their paths take the. I particularly enjoyed this one as their extended family was involved and it just worked.
4.5 Stars rounded up: In the Pines is the 3rd Columbia River book as well as the 7th Mercy Kilpatrick story. An eccentric millionaire died leaving behind clues about a $2 million treasure hidden somewhere in the small town of Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. The town is overrun by treasure hunters and their despicable traits of greed and theft, thus having the police dealing with fights, trespassing and eventually murder. Police chief Truman Daly wants it all to end. When a young man enters the station asking for help to find his mother and baby sister, he calls in his wife, FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick to aid in the search. Now they are looking for a murderer as well as a missing baby and her mother.
This was a great crime/mystery/thriller that I have come to enjoy from Kendra Elliot. If you have read any of her books, you know that "preppers" or "survivalists" always play a part in books set in this area. It turns out that the missing woman is using an assumed name and her family have been living off the grid. Once Mercy finds out who she really is, the case moves quickly. Mercy is a great character and I have always enjoyed her stories. She was raised in the prepper environment so has an understanding of how they live. I liked the young family and was rooting for them to find their father, mother and the baby and get back together. Then there is still the treasure hunt with everyone getting involved, including Ollie (Truman's foster son) and Kaylee (Mercy's niece) which added another storyline. With two cases going on, Truman and Mercy are often separated so they didn't necessarily have each other's back. There were a few twists, and I was pulled in from the first page. This was a quickly moving story, with lots of adventure and I was ready to see what was next for the Columbia River area. I did a read listen and enjoyed the narration by Teri Schnaubelt. She does a great job with both the male and female voices giving them life and adding to my enjoyment of the story. I have listened to the previous books in the series and love that I recognize the voices given. I recommend this book in whatever format you prefer.
In the Pines is book three by Kendra Elliot in the Columbia River series. The small town of Eagle's Nest, Oregon, became overrun by treasure hunters. In the madness of treasure hunters, Police Chief Truman Daly and FBI Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick became involved in the disappearance of a mother and her baby and the murder of one of the treasure hunters. The readers of In The Pines will continue to follow Police Chief Truman Daly and FBI Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick to find out what happens.
In The Pines is a fantastic addition to this excellent series by Kendra Elliot. I enjoy reading books by Kendra Elliot because she brings out living in rural communities in The USA for me. It ensures that I engage with all her stories and characters. I love Kendra Elliot's portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other. In The Pines is well-written and researched by Kendra Elliot. I like Kendra Elliot's description of the settings of In The Pines, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of In The Pines will learn about the consequences of human nature when free money is involved. Also, the readers of In The Pines will understand the importance of having a place to shelter homeless animals.
