It took me a little while to get into this one, but once the trouble in paradise started around chapter 10 or 11, it was great the rest of the way. I liked the dynamics of the interracial relationship. And I loved the humor! The secondary characters were interesting, deep, and humorous in their own ways, too.

I personally thought the romance was too quick. It was based too much on physical attraction. It was very swoon-worthy, but it was a bit shallow. So Patrice saw that he was kind and courteous. What relationship is built on a few manners and gentleness with animals? Most of it was just about beauty. And most of us can't relate to being a handsome man or a beautiful woman.

That said, I did end up enjoying it -- the ending was satisfying and definitely worth plowing through.

Favorite quotes: There were so many! I'll try to pare down:

“If I ever find a wife, she's going to have to love the ranch as much as she loves me.” (chapter 2)

“'I guess you never know when you'll meet someone who becomes one of the most significant relationships of your life.' 'You've got that right.' He grins again.” (chapter 3)

“Cowboy watching. I'm for sure making it a pastime while I'm here.” (chapter 3)

“Be still my heart. A rugged man wearing oven mitts. I had no idea this could be so swoon-worthy.” (chapter 5)

“But right now, I'd contemplate quitting my job for another kiss from Ryder. I'm a mess.” (chapter 10)

“I focus on memorizing how it feels to be held by him. I'm going to hurt from this loss anyway. I may as well sponge up moments like this while we're together.” (chapter 13)

“I'm drawing this out like I do eating ice cream on a hot day. I lick it slowly, savoring the feel and flavor. I've never been one to gobble down a cone. I want to take this moment between us just as carefully, relishing every part of it.” (chapter 14)

“But prejudice isn't all-or-nothing. We all fall along a spectrum ranging from mean-spirited supremacy to complete inclusion and equality. Your narrow-mindedness may not be at the extreme end of the spectrum, but it doesn't mean it's not there.” (chapter 16)

“When we hang up, I feel much better. Girlfriends are the best medicine.” (chapter 19)

“Today I feel like there's not a place on earth that will ever truly feel like home again.” (chapter 19)

“'Nothing like a little pie and ice cream when you're nursing a broken heart.'” (chapter 19)

“Patrice and I are over. All color just drained from my world.” (chapter 20)

“If saltwater needs to leave my system, I want it to come out my pores, not my poor, overworked tear ducts. I'm so very tired of crying.” (chapter 21)

“'You may have had to be the one to call it off, but if he wants you, he's going to have to come get you and prove that you aren't his second choice.'” (chapter 21)

“'Yes. That's what here means.' Oh, she's still got that sass I love. I can't help but smile.” (chapter 24)

“Patrice looks up into my eyes, and I would allow someone to take me out back and shoot me if I could kiss her right now.” (chapter 24)

“I'm nervous and a little frustrated that we have to rebuild things brick by brick, but I get it. Trust is easily broken and not to quickly restored.” (chapter 24)

“Let me tell it you in your own language. It's like when you've spooked a horse one too many times. Do you know what to do with that horse?' 'Yes, ma'am,' I say. 'Well, that's what you do when you've turned a woman skittish.” (chapter 24

Ok

The book felt a bit slow and in the end I was so disappointed. First of, for all her talk on wanting to be number one, Patrice ended up being the one sacrificing everything. Her suddenly establishing a business in the same town and deciding to go to dinner at Rhea’s ? That was weak and unrealistic to me. If she had to move to Texas, Austin would have made more sense. At least there she would have had decent traffic for a shop. As for the dinner with Rhea? Come on I could see the set up from miles away. She should have refused that dinner and not be so easy because he “apologized “. The author kept saying what a good guy Ryder was but in fact he was profoundly selfish. Basically expecting her to give up her life and adapt. He never tried to find solutions to make their relationship work. Come on Briggs was more invested in finding solutions than he was. While they were dating, he never actually went to LA just to connect and his behavior when she was in town was appalling. Secondly why did they have to live on the ranch? What’s wrong with his big house in town? At least there they would have some privacy because let’s face it his parents and in particular his mother were very intrusive. On top of that it’s easier to slide back when you live right there. My main issue with the book though was how the issue of race was explored. If you’re going to write about an interracial couple then you need to go all in. Of course we had the pedestrian racism of how being friends with black and hispanic people is ok but family is different. Ryder setting his family straight was fine but it felt superficial and minimal. He didn’t distance himself in any way so it was just talk. I’m please Rhea came around but what about his parents? The idea that apart from his family with everybody else in the book it was peaches and cream is ludicrous. She never had a direct racist encounter alone or while they were together? Even between them the topic of race never arose even in the context of how confortable it would be for her to live in a small town and raise children there. It made me uncomfortable.

I really enjoyed this mixed race romance. It took things slowly and thoroughly. It really fleshed out the characters and their life situations. We saw a good amount of Kat (heroine from the first book) and that was really fun. I’m excited to see what comes next in this series!

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Ok read

This was a decent read but dragged on too long. Patrice had a few too many hangups and became unlikable.

Patty's stories get better and better.

I really enjoyed Ryder and Patrice's story. As an Australian married to a man born in South Africa, I'll never understand the prejudice some people have regarding other races. The same held true for Ryder and Patrice, and I'm so glad they both stood firm against the prejudices both their families held against the other.

Wonderful story! Looking forward to the next book!

This is my favorite book in the Unforgettable Love Stories series by Patty H. Scott. Patrice truly was a wonderful character to get to know, and I loved her story. I truly appreciated the conflict in the story and how the characters once again came together to show reconciliation.

This story also tackled the very real issue of racial prejudice. I felt like it was handled in a realistic way and once again had me examining my own biases.

I received a copy of this book from the author. This review is my own, honest opinion.
