Bad, Dad, and Dangerous

Rate this book
Bad, Dad and Dangerous Anthology Featuring Bru Baker, Jenn Moffatt, TA Moore, and Rhys Ford.

When the kids are away, the monsters will play.

School’s out for summer, and these dads are ready to ship their kids off to camp. Not just because their kids are monsters—whose aren’t?—but because they’re ready for some alone time to let their hair down and their fangs out. You see, not only are the kids monsters—their dads are too.

Even the most dangerous of creatures has a soft spot. These bad, dangerous dads love their kids to death, but they need romance.

Every year, for a few short weeks, these hot men with a little extra in their blood get to be who they truly are. And this year, life has a surprise for them. Whether they be mage, shifter, vampire, or changeling, these heartbreakingly handsome dads might be looking to tear up the town… but they’ll end up falling in love. All it takes is the right man to bring them to their knees.

KISMET & CADAVERS BY JENN MOFFATT

Thomas Anders is prepared for two weeks of alone time, or as alone as he can be living with his daughter’s sentient undead cat, running the family occult shop, and keeping San Diego safe from the strange and supernatural. What he doesn’t expect is for KJ Beshter to arrive in his shop bearing a gift card Thomas’s daughter cast a spell on. Thomas has met her handsome magic-sensitive teacher before, but now that Star is moving up a grade, he can cross that line. It would be perfect timing if something wicked didn’t want to sink its claws into KJ too….

MONSTER HALL PASS BY BRU BAKER

White-collar dad Hugh Whitby dotes on his adopted daughter, but she’s away at camp. Now it's time let the vampiric urges he so tightly controls run wild and take advantage of his monster hall pass to feed on criminals. But when fae prince Rykoff of Harlow interrupts Hugh feeding, he catches Hugh’s daughter’s scent and vows to avenge the fae youngling he believes Hugh has captured.

Hugh had no idea his daughter wasn’t human, and it rocks the foundation of his world. He must convince Rykoff that the fae youngling in question is safe with her vampire dad and can prosper in the mortal realm—or risk losing her forever.

WOLF AT FIRST SIGHT BY RHYS FORD

SFPD Lieutenant Joseph Zanetti has spent years protecting his city, and from the looks of St. Connal’s Pub and its bad-boy owner, Levi Keller, the place is a hotspot for trouble and violence. Joe’s problem? Levi is delectably hot, with secrets Joe can’t wait to dig into.

As a Peacekeeper for paranormals, wolf shifter Levi doesn’t need the complication of a hot cop sniffing around his pub when he’s just sent his teen son off to summer camp. He’s busy brokering a peace agreement between two warring factions. When Joe stumbles into Levi’s world, both plunge into a situation neither one of them was ready for—falling in love.

ELF SHOT BY TA MOORE

All Conri wanted was to drop his kid off at Changeling camp, find the nearest halfway nice hotel, and enjoy a week of uncomplicated debauchery. It should be simple. It doesn’t work out that way.

When a local girl disappears, the neighborhood quickly lays blame at the well-guarded gates of the camp. With his son incriminated, a mystery to solve, and a malevolent pocket of the Otherworld to navigate, Conri will need all the help he can get—even if it does come from a distractingly pretty, tightly wound Iron Door agent who doesn’t trust Conri to be on the right side.

This was such a fun PNR anthology! Some authors I have read before and some were new! I love discovering new voices!

MONSTER HALL PASS BY BRU BAKER

This was a novella featuring a vampire dad who is willing to give his all to protect his daughter and a bit high on the instep (in the beginning at least) fae prince who is on a mission to uncover the truth. Both men discover way more than they bargained for but in the end their unexpected connection might be the start of something beautiful. Filled with light humor and feisty characters this was a very enjoyable story. (single POV)

KISMET & CADAVERS BY JENN MOFFATT

This was a new to me author and I liked her writing style. Long forgotten childhood connection, sneaky clever daughter and ghostly shenanigans await. I loved both MCs - likable and cute with a spine of steel. The twist in the end was unexpected and very enjoyable. (dual POV)

ELF SHOT BY TA MOORE

This story is a bit darker and angstier than others. The animosity between Changelings and humans causes a whole lot of trouble at the annual Changeling Summer camp trip. Conri, a single father, has to fight for his son and help prevent an all out war with the help of Iron Door agent Bell. Conri's story is angry and raw, Bell is somewhat dented, but in the time of danger they find a way to be close and maybe figure out if there is a way for them to be together. I liked the complexity of the world and Conri's brash attitude. (dual POV)

WOLF AT FIRST SIGHT BY RHYS FORD

This was a bit of insta connection between a Peacekeeper wolf shifter Levi and SFPD Lieutenant Joe whose family is full of fun secrets. I loved the paranormal community and the rules they all followed, the relationships and intricacies in species politics. The MCs were snarky and had nice chemistry. (dual POV)

Every story had mild steam and a decent level of suspense. The characters were well written and the relationships while some quickly established had a bit of time to grow and make each story well rounded and entertaining without being too easy. I enjoyed this anthology from start to finish. Copy received for my honest and unbiased review

This anthology gives you four amazing stories, complete by themselves, which definitely makes a nice change. All too often you get a story that ends with a cliffhanger at the start of a new series. Not here.

Each story is different but with a similar theme that ties them together in this anthology. From magical un-dead cats to peacekeeping wolves, from energy vampires to changelings.

As with most anthologies, there are some stories that I prefer but that doesn't mean the others are not as good. They are all brilliant and introduced me to two new-to-me authors so I'm very happy.

This was a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Hugh is a vampire and once a year, after he drops his daughter off at camp, he goes hunting to satisfy his hunger. One his first hunt, he runs into Rykoff who turns out to be a member of the Fae Royal Court. Their initial meeting wasn't pretty. Rykoff is hunting for a rouge Fae who he believes kidnapped a Fae prince. Rykoff thinks that vampires kill innocent humans, but it turns out they don't, or at least there wasn't any mention of that. They also feed on emotions and not blood. Hugh also finds out what his daughter really is. Along the way, Rykoff & Hugh grow to care for each other & finally falling in love. I really did enjoy this one.

When KJ was a child and at summer camp, he came across something that he shouldn't have seen, witches performing a ritual. Thomas comes from a long line of witches and is powerful. His daughter is even more so. I loved Star. She has done some things that she should have, like bringing her cat back to life after getting hit by a car. I loved Nation's POV. He isn't really alive & he is really dead, but he is really cool. Grownup KJ was Star's teach and had a thing for her father. Star again uses magic on a gift card bringing her dad and KJ together. The bad guy in all of this was really bad and KJ & Thomas ends up having to fight them. I would love seeing this turn into a series with these two doing investigations and fighting the spiritual bad guys/gals.

I hate to say this, but I didn't care for this one. I had a hard time following the story as there was so much going on and it was very convoluted. Though I did like the characters, I just was lost.

Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford

This one is set in the Wayward Wolves world & is about Gibson & Ellis' cousin Levi. It's been a minute since I read the Wayward Wolves & not sure if he was mentioned. Anyway Levin is a peacekeeper who is like a mediator of the paranormal community and a wolf shifter. His son is so sweet & when his wolf gets a trim from the girls at camp, I could just picture it & it was so funny. Joe is a SFPD detective and is keeping an eye on a pretty bad motorcycle gang who he doesn't know are shifters. He doesn't know about the paranormal world at all & when he is attacked and seriously injured in a case of mistaken identify, he finds out the family secret from his grandmother, who I absolutely adored. When he learns about the world and tells Levi that he will help him we get to watch these two work together & fall in love. I hope we can get to see more of them in the future Wayward Wolves series.

Monster Hall Pass
Loved this. Thought it was so cute and Rykoff and Hugh were perfect for each other. I loved Hugh's protective instinct and I loved Rykoff's willingness to protect Ruby as well. It was kind of a tit for tat in the beginning but then things just developed on their own. I want more of this story. I'd love to see it as a full length.

Kismet and Cadavers
Thomas and KJ. Awwww!! I LOVED KJ and David, too! That relationship was magic on it's own. I also loved Star and wished we could have seen more of her. Once again, I want more of Nate, KJ, David, Star and Thomas. I need a longer story!

Elf Shot
This one was a little harder for me to get into, to be honest, but in the end I loved Conri and Bell (and Finn). I like the idea of Changlings since I haven't read much about it. It was interesting, but this was a little darker in nature that the others in this anthology.

Wolf at First Sight
LOVE!!! That's all there is. I LOVED Levi and Joe. I loved Strega, too. Once again, I'd love to read more about Big S and Joe's talk. I want more about the kahuna, too. I want more about Deck and his shenanegins. Deck and Levi's talks made me smile.

All in all this was a great anthology. It's hard for me to find one where I like all the stories, but I did in this. I would re-read them all again in a heartbeat.

NOTE - I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
This is an anthology of 4 paranormal romantic adventures. Each story features a single dad who is temporarily on their own while the kid is gone on a summer vacation. Each Dad meets someone new and has to balance a paranormal problem of some kind with a budding new something. I’ve never reviewed an anthology before, but here goes.

Monster Hall Pass - Bru Baker
Hugh is a vampire raising the daughter he adopted after finding her abandoned in a dumpster as a baby. He finds it odd that he’s never been able to read Ruby’s aura like he can the humans, so he suspects she might be a paranormal of some kind, but foundling babies don’t come with pedigree papers so who knows. Either way, they are living in the human world so Hugh raising Ruby as a human while he lives as a human.
Ruby is off to summer camp for a month, so it’s time for Hugh’s annual hunt. As we know, vampires do not feed on human blood. Their essence feeds on human emotion, especially the negative ones. But if the vampire drains too much at one time, the human could die. For this reason Hugh NEVER hunts except when Ruby is away, and he uses his ability to read auras to choose only the worst of the worst from the human buffet. During his annual hunt he tanks up on all of the human emotion he can, and then the rest of the year gets by on a trickle charge, absorbing the negative emotions he comes into contact with as the manager of a customer service call center.
His first night out hunting Hugh comes accross a violent rapist at a truck stop. As he seeks to intervene he’s interrupted by Rykoff. Rykoff is a member of the Fae Royal Court and he’s here in the mortal realm searching for a Fae Prince who went missing about a decade ago. He sees Hugh and his kind as viscous cruel beings who feed off of innocent humans. He tries to stop Hugh, not realizing that Hugh’s hunt actullay protects humans be eliminating the truely evil ones. Imagine the WORST way to meet someone you might find attractive.
Once Rykoff is faced with proof of Hugh’s actually good intentions, if not his good nature, he’s willing to accept help from the vamp. Wile riding in Hugh’s car Rykoff picks up on Ruby’s essence from some misplaced items in the back seat. Guess what? Ruby is the half-blood daughter of the missing prince. Since Rykoff will do ANYTHING to rescue the prince (and/or previously unknown daughter), and Hugh would give his very life to protect Ruby, the two paranormals team up to keep the fae out of the hands of those who would be willing to kill in order to steal the Fae magical powers.
I loved this story, because I liked the idea of adversaries teaming up for a common goal. I also liked the pace of the relationship, in that it didn’t feel overly fast or forced like can happen so easily in tales of this length.

Kismet and Cadavers - Jenna Moffat
Thomas Anders is a warlock from an old and respected Mage family. He’s rasing his daughter Star, who happens to be powerful enough to accidentally use black magic to raise her beloved cat from the dead after an unfortunate encounter with a car. Ressurrection is STRICTLY forbidden, but so far Thomas has managed to keep their talking feline familiar under wraps. Nate (or Nation, short for abomination, as Thomas calls him), remains a closely guarded secret.
KJ Beshter was one of Star’s favorite teachers last year. Star is multiple grades ahead of her age in school, and KJ tutored her through a particular advanced class. Due to a particular childhood experience KJ has spent much of his leisure time trying to get irrefutable proof thgat magic and the supernatural exist. As a thank-you for his effort Star gives KJ a gift card to the Anders’ family’s magic shop. Star has secretly charmed the gift card in hopes of getting KJ and her Dad together.
The Summer Solstice is approaching, perfect time for a part-time paranormal researcher to top up on books and gadgets. Star has just left for summer camp, so Thomas has the store all to his lonesome. Good thing, as Summer Solstice is also the perfect time for the practitioners of black magic to capture magical beings, possess their bodies, and thereby gain/maintain immortality.
KJ and Thomas end up having to fight the bad guys, all the while trying to fight their growing attraction. Star’s magic meddling may have provided the spark, but the relationship grows entirely naturally, so it’s more like a matter of timing than Star creating a relationship out of nothing. As a result, even though the “meet” was engineered, the relationship doesn’t feel that way.
I could see this story being the kickoff to some sort of paranormal adventure series.

Elf Shot - TA Moore
Conri is an elfin changeling, as is his adoptive son Finn. Changelings are people who started out human, but were converted (or partially converted) by spending too much time in the Otherworld (the magic world of the fae, elves, etc.). The story starts out with Conri driving Finn to a special summer camp for changleing teens. The locals HATE that the camp exists, since the first Changelings were the result of humans being kidnapped into the Otherworld. It was a LONG time ago, and it doesn’t go on anymore, but as a result the fae and other beings are generally disliked and always distrusted. Finn and some other kids sneak off the camp grounds to attend a local teen party and things go WAY wrong. Now 1 human teen girl (Nora) and 3 changeling teens are missing. If Nora isn’t found soon, the Human/Otherworld treaty will fall apart and war will ensue.
Iron Door is the group of paranormal enforcers charged with making sure that any human entering the Otherworld is doing so of thier own free will. Iron Door is NOT happy about the possibility (and growing human suspicion) that the missing changeling teens have abducted Nora into the Otherworld. If that’s the case then Nora will start to become a changleing. Time is of the essence, so they put Agen Dylan Bellamy (aka Bell) on the case.
Bell and Conri become partners (though at first unwillingly) to (A) find Nora and the missing changeling kids; and (B) get some kind of proof that Nora wasn’t abducted. It’s a race against time, magic beings, and the attraction growing between Bell and Conri.
Of the four stories in the anthology this is the one I liked least. The relationship between the two men feels about right in terms of pacing, but the plotline itselft didn’t appeal as much. For some reason the challenge/adventure part of the plot felt very convoluted to me. I had trouble following what was all going on becuase there was so much and it seemed like the peril just kept buidling. I had to read the story a couple of times to get more of the gist of it.

Wolf at First Site -- Rhys Ford
The 4th and Final story of the collection is an offshoot of Rhy’s “Wayword Wolves.” In the first book of that series we meet Gibson Keller (a wolf shifter) and his brother Ellis. Gibson is one of the MC’s in that book, with Ellis filling an important secondary role. This story features Levi Keller, a cousin of Gibson and Ellis.
Levi is a respected Paranormal Peacekeeper. The Peacekeepers help the paranormals to stay hidden in the mundane (aka human) world by acting as impartal mediators. In this way paranormal disputes don’t escaate into things that the humans couldn’t help but notice. Levi’s Irish pub St. Connal’s is a Sanctuary, where any paranormals can safely come to have their disagreements adjudicated by Levi.
Jospeh Zanetti is an SFPD Lieutieent (hmm - I wonder if he knows any of the Morgan family? the SFPD is chock full of them) who is part of a multiple precinct gang taskforce. He’s concerned bacause he’s seen few bikers whose clubs have BAD reputations hanging out at and around St. Connels. He has no idea why they’re there, but it doesn’t look good in terms of maintaining the peace and stopping a gang war from erupting.
One night while scoping things out Joe is attacked by one of the bikers, and sees the dude turn into a nasty-looking coyote right in front of his eyes. Turns out the coyote mistook Joe for Levi. Then Levi, seeing the attack, turns into a black wolf and fights off the coyote. Joe gets conked on the head and goes out cold.
When Joe comes to he’s lying on a couch in Levi’s apartment. He’s not sure if he really saw what he thinks he remembers seeing. Enter Joe’s grandmother Toni Zanetti. Joe is about to discover the family secret, that his sweet Catholic grandma is also a powerful 6th-generation Streja with healing magic. In one night Joe not only learns that the paranormal exists, but that he’s the descendent of one. Welcome to life in the freaky lane Joe.
The accidental attack on Joe puts him right in the middle of a touchy negotiation Levi is trying to mediate between two shifter groups who happen to like motorcycles and aren’t always strictly adherent to human law (hence the presence of the suspicious bikers Joe has seen). Throw in his attraction to Levi, and Joe is one VERY confused person.
This story is a fun romp. The relationship between Joe and Levi is something neither of them was looking for, and not sure either of them wanted. Yet, since they have to rely on each other to get through the current sticky situation it just works. It doesn’t happen too fast to be belivable, but not so slow that it feels fake or forced.

Overall I’d give the collection as a whole 4 stars out of 5. I couldn’t give it 5 stars due to the dissonance and disconnection that I felt in the 3rd story of the collection.

HE SAID – REVIEWED BY ULYSSES DIETZ
MEMBER OF THE PARANORMAL ROMANCE GUILD REVIEW TEAM
This is a really fun ride, combining the talents of four creative women who each riff on an offbeat theme: a gay/bi paranormal dad raising an adolescent child on his own, who he sends off to summer camp, hoping to enjoy a little “me” time—and maybe find romance.

The first story—and these are all of substantial length, really novellas—is Monster Hall Pass by Bru Baker. Hugh Whitby (his name a sly homage to Dracula) is a vampire, who has given up a career in the paranormal world to become—wait for it—an insurance company call center manager(!) so that he can be a “normal” dad and raise Ruby, the little girl he adopted after finding her as an infant, abandoned by a dumpster. Baker has taken some liberties with the lore of the vampire, but leaving in place the crucial detail that, now and then, vampires do need to kill. In order not to create havoc in the human world, they (or at least Hugh) only go after unrepentant, violent criminals—often working in collaboration with police. So Hugh’s vacation will involve some self-care in the form of offing bad guys.

His plans go a bit sideways when, at the very start of his vacation, Hugh runs into a mysterious man named Rykoff, a reluctant visitor from the fae world, who has a rather negative attitude about vampires. As Hugh and Rykoff get to know each other, however, some startling truths are revealed, and Hugh begins to realize that his meeting with the attractive, taciturn fae woodworker is possibly not an accident after all.

If I have a complaint about this story, it’s that there are lots of details that could have borne a deeper exploration, by expansion of the novella into a full-on novel. It’s a fascinating premise and a fun narrative, but it felt somehow skimpy in its world- and character-building. I liked it a lot, but I wanted more.

Kismet and Cadavers by Jenn Moffatt is sweet and romantic in just the right way. Kevin-James Beshter is a high-school history teacher haunted by memories of seeing a coven of dancing naked witches one summer at Boy Scout camp. In the face of the world’s disbelief, he has become an amateur ghost-hunter, seeking some proof of what he knows in his heart to be the truth. Then his favorite student, Star Anders, manages to arrange for him to meet her handsome father, even though she is off at summer camp. Thomas Anders, and his sentient, undead cat (a great story in itself), is lonely and hoping for some “me time” while his precocious magical daughter is out of the house. Little does he know that her adorable history teacher might not be as much of a stranger as he thinks at first sight. Without fully knowing what they’re getting into, KJ and Thomas embark on an adventure in the paranormal world of San Diego that will reveal several truths and risk their lives.

I loved Moffatt’s sweet, low-angst romantic storytelling, spiced up with the almost unexpected darkness of the climactic event—an intersection of KJ and Thomas’s worlds that neither expected. I did wonder how Thomas managed to become a father.

T.A. Moore’s Elf Shot is the most complex and darkest of the four stories. I had some trouble getting a grip on this one—not for any writing issues, but because the author more or less drops you into the disorienting borderland between the human and fae worlds. I had to really scrabble, grabbing whatever clues I could find, to understand fully what was going on. In retrospect, I think the author did this on purpose, to keep the reader off-kilter in this high-action and surprisingly gruesome tale.

Conri is a human changeling—a child stolen by the fae and only returned when the fae and human worlds signed an agreement—a treaty of sorts. He has an adopted son, Finnegan, who is not only a teenager, but a fae child himself, abandoned in the human world. While off at fae-kids summer camp, Finn gets involved in a party-crashing adventure that goes badly wrong. Conri steps in to help clear his son of suspicion and to find out the truth—only to literally run into Dylan Bellamy—known as Bell—special agent for the Iron Door, the human agency that polices fae/human problems.

The romance in this tale is more prickly, less sweet, but no less effective for all that. As we learn about Conri’s own story, and begin to understand Bell’s life as an Iron Door agent, we see a challenge for both of these men to overcome their own histories in the name of something better.

The finale is Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford, familiarly set in her favorite town of San Francisco which, as one character says, pretty much invented weird. Levi Keller runs St. Con’s, a popular local bar—a bar suspiciously free of drunk-and-disorderly calls to the police. That oddly good behavior draws the attention of police detective Joe Zanetti, especially when representatives of two motorcycle clubs appear in the neighborhood in the same 24-hour period. While Zanetti is staking out St. Con’s, he witnesses Levi sending his teenage son, Declan, off to summer camp, only to be interrupted by his grandmother, who has walked two miles to find him because she suspects he might be hungry. What Joe Zanetti doesn’t know is that Keller is a wolf shifter and a peacekeeper for the paranormal community in San Francisco—nor that his grandmother spends an awful lot of time at St. Con’s for a good elderly Catholic woman.

This is funnier, and lighter in feeling than the other stories, with Ford’s distinctive comic edge. The accidental stumbling of a good cop into a world he didn’t know existed is a great set-up for his personal education as well as his miserable love life.

A nice motif that runs through all four stories is the fathers’ fierce love for their children, along with the acknowledgement of how difficult adolescents—magical or otherwise—can be. Lovelorn men, raising children alone, finding potential romance in unexpected places—each author has taken these ideas and made them into surprisingly different, refreshingly heartfelt tales.

If you want a read that will you get through a rainy afternoon curled up on a couch, look no further than this- this collection of short tales, full of fantasy, humour, snark and romance. It certainly ticked all of my boxes.

All of the writers are talented, resulting in an anthology that has many wonderful characters, that truly come alive on the page. Even though the stories have the same theme (read the blurb), they're all different and entertaining, it’s hard not to enjoy something from every story.

I'm not going to review each and every story, because I don't want to give anything away. I rated the stories from a 3 and a half to five, which is why I gave it 4 stars. Certainly worth a read.

Bad, Dad, and Dangerous is an anthology of 4 short stories focusing on the common theme of a main character who is balancing being both a dad and a paranormal being of some sort or another. During each of these shorts, the Dad sends their kid off to summer camp before experiencing a more drama filled break than they expected…but they also meet the loves of their life along the way.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would hands down be “Monster Hall Pass” by Bru Baker (a new to me author that I’ll certainly be trying a full length book by soon). This was such a well developed story squeezed into a short story format. I honestly could’ve read a full length novel with these two MCs and would’ve loved to experience more time in the world it’s set in.

This is a fun and frightening blend of 4 novellas featuring different authors. Being a father is an intense responsibility whether you are human or something else. Well these fathers are an eclectic blend of vampires, warlocks, elves and wolves and being a single parent isn't any easier for them, even with supernatural powers.

Monster Pass by Bru Baker.
A different twist on vampires dispelling old myths and challenging ones conception of what a vampire really is and how they behave. Hugh is a vampire that surprised me. He is raising his beloved daughter Ruby who was found abandoned as an infant. A unique tale filled with intersecting worlds both human and magical. This single dad Vamp meets a Fae on a quest and the adventure ensues. A total twist on everything I thought I knew about vampires. A great adventure!

Kismet and Cadavers by Jenn Moffatt.
Ms. Moffett is a new author for me and she delivered a very interesting story of magic, witches and an undead Kitty. I enjoyed this tale of new lovers connecting by more than fate but to be honest, my favorite character was the cat Nation that also had the amazing and mostly annoying ability to speak. It was fresh, fun and Incredibly unique! I highly recommend this enjoyable fantasy full of love and adventure.

Elf Shot by T A Moore.
Conri is looking for a wild weekend when he drops his kid off at changeling camp but nothing is ever simple is it? Missing children from the camp cause great consternation and the promise of harm between the races. The story was darker than the previous two. Be forewarned this is not a light read as there is intense hatred towards those that are different that felt like homophobia. It was difficult at times for me to read. An intense book with a happy for now ending.

Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford.
Levi owns a pub but he is so much more than a barkeep. He is also a wolf shifter and Peacemaker for paranormals. His son Declan is going away to summer camp and he is hoping to have some fun. I was instantly absorbed in the story and couldn't put it down! Rhys really makes the characters come to life and boy did they shine in this sweet boy meets werewolf tale. Joe Zanetti SFPD lieutenant is craftily thrown into Levi's world by a meddling grandmother who adores "the gay grandson" and is more than she appears. I couldn't get enough of the interesting group of shifters and Levi's son Declan was such a character. He almost rivaled Joe's Italian grandma.

I highly recommend this quartet of creatures that go bump in the night looking for a little fun when the kids are away. A monsterly delight!
Special thanks to the authors for a copy of this book for my reading pleasure.

These dads are really badass…

Monster Hall Pass by Bru Baker
Hugh Whitby is a vampire used to repress his abilities to blend easily in the human world, and so become the perfect dad for his lovely daughter, Ruby. His reprieve is his Monster Hall Pass, two weeks he’s got to behave as a supernatural while Ruby is at her summer camp. On his first hunt, he crashes into Fae Prince Rykoff, and soon discovers there is more to his daughter than what he originally thought…
I really enjoyed the twist to the vamp myth here. Hugh and Rykoff share their worry for Ruby, and an off-chart chemistry. I liked it!
4 stars

Kismet and cadavers by Jenn Moffatt
After sending his brilliant daughter to summer camp, Thomas Anders is ready to spend two weeks enjoying some time on his own… but Star has made sure he’ll find good company in her favourite teacher KJ Beshter. United by magic, and with the help of a sentient undead cat, Thomas and KJ are ready to face some ancient evil lurking in the dark…
This was really enjoyable, I loved Nation and Thomas… I had some trouble with KJ, as his antics seemed really childish to me, as if he was refusing to behave adult on purpose (his feeding habits, his lifestyle… too frat boy for my liking). But on the whole, it was a really enjoyable one

Conri knows his son is not really his, but there is not much he won’t do to protect him. After all, the moody changeling is all he’s got. Even if keeping him safe involves a uncomfortable alliance with an Iron Door Agent and a risky trip into the Otherworld…
This is by far the darkest story of the collection, also the most confusing. With plenty of references to Sidhe lore, it is not easy to follow, and yet it is really engaging. The only problem is that it depends too much on the reader making assumptions and/or ignoring plenty of questions…
4 stars

Wolf at First Sight by TA Moore
Lieutenant Joseph Zanetti is certain that there is something fishy going on at St Con. the local pub where his granny spends her afternoon playing cards. But one look at Levi, the handsome owner, and Joseph knows that he is in trouble. Because the man exudes danger… and sex appeal. Add a bunch of bikers and a coyote shifter with a grudge… and see how your world implodes
This was by far my favourite of the stories. Likeable characters, a sense of humour, and plenty of action. Secondary characters here are the best. As always, Rhys Ford manages to charm and entertain.

At about 400 pages, these four stories are nice short little snippets from basically my favourite authors!

Monster Hall Pass by Bru Baker: Hugh is a vampire who gets by feeding off the stress and heightened emotions of his colleagues and customers, and with a little girl named Ruby. This story is packed with mystery, adventure and fun - I loved Hugh's slightly snarky internal voice, and the story itself was great! The first in the collection, it absolutely sets the standards and had me completely hooked right away.

Kismet and Cadavers by Jenn Moffatt: A cute family story, Thomas runs an occult shop, and Beshter is his daughter's teacher. Well written, pretty sweet and adorkable, and with enough intrigue to have me glued to the page, I really enjoyed this! Jenn Moffatt was perhaps the least known author to me, but it definitely encouraged me to check out even more of her work.

Elf Shot by TA Moore: The darkest of this series (...unsurprisingly), the writing is classic Moore with a show not tell approach, and so it's perhaps the least accessible of the series. Conri has a son at Changeling camp, who is accused of being involved in the disappearance of another child. Definitely more intense, of all the stories it probably would have benefited the most from being a proper novel. Having said that, I still enjoyed it (but I adore ALL of Moore's work).

Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford: Wolf shifters, bikers and police, oh my! This is classic Ford with snark, great chemistry and secrets. Levi is a wolf shifter and Joe is a cop with a mysterious family - there are a few elements that I would have loved to see expanded on in a longer story, and the there is a bit of instalove required due to the short story format, but this is still a great story with good pacing.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable collection of short stories - with a focus on romance rather than any sex, which is reinforced by the strong family theme, and with supernatural characters that are mysterious rather than spooky, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

BAD, DAD, AND DANGEROUS is such a fun read. The four novellas each set in AU town in America and standalone from one another. Starring four dads with paranormal affiliations, the stories told the shenanigans these dads found themselves in when their offsprings off for summer camp.

Of the four authors’s writings, I’m new to Jenn Moffat’s works and I have to say her KISMET & CADAVERS is quite a nice introduction. The characters were such a hoot; especially the undead cat. The back and forth these guys had were so easy and effortless. General idea and delivery of the plot weren’t overstated though I felt this tale could work much more as a full-length novel as it could explore the magical element as well as the character development.

Bru Baker’s MONSTER HALL and Rhys Ford’s WOLF AT FIRST SIGHT were also enjoyable; very character-driven with the snark-exchange distinctive from each author’s books. Personally I thought Baker’s novella was set in Camp HOWL’s universe though not necessarily connected to the series. The touch of ‘mystery’ in these novellas also didn’t try too hard to override other mundane issues in the story. Which resulting in entertaining ride and often had me snickering while reading.

TA Moore’s is a hit and miss for me; and apparently ELF SHOT was more of a miss in that the too elaborate plot had me lost and almost abandon the story more than once. Both heroes (dad and the LEO) were charming enough to start with. Unfortunately that alone wasn’t enough to keep my attention to the flow of the story that - as the pages went - getting too baffling to follow for me.

Of the four, only the last mentioned novella didn’t really work for me. But three out of four could be considered a success that this anthology merits a recommendation, yes? There’s also a chance that others feel differently and all four work very well for them.

Monster Hall Pass by Bru Baker

This one was interesting and I really ended up enjoying it. Hugh is a vampire with a daughter to raise so he doesn't get much time to hunt. In this world vampires feed off emotion not blood. So after he drops his daughter off at camp he goes to hunt but runs into a Fae, Rykoff. The meeting goes bad to say the least. Rykoff is trying to find another Fae he believes kidnapped the royal Fae Prince. Hugh ends up caught up in the investigation and that's where things really get interesting. Along the way Rykoff and Hugh start to fall for each other and Hugh finds out some information about his daughter.

Kismet & Cadavers by Jenn Moffatt
3.5 stars
This one was also pretty good. It starts with a scene at camp when KJ was a boy that pulled me right in and got me hooked. It then fast forwards to the future where KJ believes in the supernatural and is trying to find proof. He is also a teacher and one of his students is the daughter (Star) of a witch from the childhood camp scene that started KJ's belief in the supernatural. Star uses a spell to get her father (Thomas) and KJ in the same place and the two hit it off and begin dating. There's some bad mischief afoot from a supernatural source that KJ and Thomas must fight but really interested me where the characters. Star adds a lot and I loved her cat whom she had brought back from the dead.

Elf Host by T.A. Moore

This one was just a bit too convoluted and bizarre for me. Add to that the very long monologues and the author's tendency to tell not show and I was a bit bored. The other issue I had was that things would be brought up and then dropped without explanation or closure. In a series this can work since you will hopefully find out later but for a short story in a stand alone book it just annoyed me. The ending was also a bit depressing

Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford
5 stars
I loved this one and actually enjoyed it more then the full length book I believe this story was set in (Wayward Wolves). I really liked both MC's Levi and Joe and Levi's son as well. Joe is a cop who doesn't know about the paranormal world until he is attacked in a parking lot. Levi happens upon the attack and is left to answer all of Joe's questions. There were several secondary characters that were interesting and I liked the community this one took place in. I really loved the story and characters in this one and wish it was longer. Hopefully we see more of them in future books!

A truly enjoyable anthology from favourite authors giving us a great reading experience, love the Paranormal and what a way to spend the summer holidays

A whole new interpretation of the Vampire mythology and I’m fully on board. I enjoyed every word in this vampire / fae story. It is fast moving and despite physical fights not really angsty but full of found love and found family. Loved it.
2.Jenn Moffat.

Spanning many years, this is a lovely tale of fated mates briefly meeting as children then circumstance brings them together as adults. I laughed over the “skin so soft” because I’ve tried it myself and it really does smell awful 🥴.
There’s magic, good and bad, there’s a very exciting climax to the book and honestly potential for a great series!

An interesting extremely violent and blood thirsty non-romance, romance. A different take on the Fae realm. For me a little hard to follow, with it’s confusing cast of characters. Bell and Conri have good chemistry, the ending? possibilities of more?

My favourite of the 4, perhaps the shortest too. It was good to visit the Keller family and see how Ellis is fairing. Levi and Joe have great chemistry. Who wouldn’t love a Pomeranian wolf? The secondary characters in this one really added to the fun.

I totally enjoyed this anthology and highly recommend it!

4.5 out of 5.

Monster Hall Pass
I wasn’t terribly interested in the storyline for this book, so I mainly did a skim read of it. If you like the storyline, you will like it.

Kismet & Cadavers
I liked this one. I loved the magic sprinkled throughout the book with the spells and fae sightings and talking cats… It was a good romance. Like a lot of these books in the anthology, the daughter played a cute side part even though she was away at camp for most of the story.

Elf Shot
This was an intriguing mystery. I was engrossed from the start. It had some romance thrown in and a HFN ending. A really good read.

Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford
It’s hard to go wrong with a book by Rhys Ford. As expected, the book was my favorite. It was so entertaining! It’s also related to her other book Once Upon a Wolf, FYI.
This book is about wolf shifter Levi Keller and human Joe Zanetti. They meet and discover a connection that develops to something deep and meaningful.
It’s a shorter book than her books usually are (since it’s part of an anthology), but it still accomplishes everything her longer stories do. It’s engrossing, sweet, and has a HFN. I enjoyed the action, too.

This book left me with the worst book hangover - not just when I reached the very end, but as I finished each and every story.
These four authors are masters at their craft, and left me hungry for more. They way they each took on supernatural creatures was fresh and exciting, and I have to say T.A. Moore's Elf Shot was probably one of the most original stories I have ever read.
I am immensely in love with this book, and I was thrilled to receive an ARC as I love each of these authors individually - and seeing how they each took on the theme in such different ways, creating fully developed worlds in less than novel length formats, and making me sob grossly when I realized there wasn't any more left to read? Masterful. Truly and utterly masterful.
If you haven't read anything by any of these authors, this is a perfect book to dip your toes in the water...you will get hooked and go hunting for their work.
Five stars to the anthology as a whole, and five stars for each story as well.

This was a wonderful collection and I loved all four stories for different reasons. It goes without saying with these authors that they are well-written with engaging characters and sweet/hot/scorching romances. I'll list what I loved most about each of the four stories.
In KISMET & CADAVERS, I loved the best friend. Everyone should have a best friend like David, who believes you and in you. True male-male friendships are rare in romance and I love that KJ had David.
In MONSTER HALL PASS I loved how accepting queen Naenaid was. Contrary to every scary fae or fairy queen stereotype this made me smile.
in ELF SHOT I loved Conri who may not have made himself from the start but who made himself into a great father and I loved his relationship with Finn.
In WOLF AT FIRST SIGHT, I loved the small glimpse of Ellis (from another Rhys story) but most of all I loved Levi and especially Declan. Yes, the romance between Joe and Levi is great and Joe's development is funny and great but Levi shines as Declan's dad and Declan steals every scene he's in.

Bad Dad and Dangerous

Monster Hall Pass 4.5
I really enjoyed this story. It had just enough details of the world that I wasn’t lost. I liked the idea of Vampires living off Chi rather than blood. Ruby was great though we don’t see much of her. I liked how it ended.

Kismet and Cadavers 4.5

An undead cat, ghosts, paved over grave yards, and kismet; A recipe for a delicious tale. I really liked KJ and Thomas.

Elf Shot 4

This is more gruesome and dark than the other two. The other world is a strange place. I’m not sure if I really understood what the changelings were and I would have liked more info on Bell and Conri’s pasts. Some details were hinted at but not enough. I hope this turns into a series as it ended on a tentative hfn.

Wolf at First Sight 4

Though the story and relationship moved quickly and there’s not a lot of action, I enjoyed this tale of first meetings. Joe’s introduction into the paranormal world hits with a bang and goes from there. Not a lot happens but there are some cute moments, Declan’s fur issues being one.

All four authors brought their A+ game to this Anthology. Each story is exciting, action pact, and has a happy resolution. The only tie together is that the MC are Dad’s sending their kid to summer camp, with some sort of paranormal element. There are elves, vampires, changelings, werewolves, and more. Definitely worth a read if you like competent men doing a bit dangerous things and falling in love!

Just in time for Halloween!

What a great group of authors. This anthology is perfect for October. Paranormal. Dads. Perfect.

I'm going to review this as a whole. Each story was great. The characters were wonderful and the world-building was nice for short stories. This anthology gives you a little bit of everything. The kids help make the stories and the dads aren't too bad either.

If you want a quick read with fun stories, this is the anthology for you!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable anthology of paranormal stories with a central theme of dads who have sent their kids to summer camp. My favorite was most definitely Jenn Moffatt's Kismet & Cadavers, which was a wonderful mix of magic and ghosts. They were honestly all hits for me, giving me a nice blend of paranormal, mystery, romance, and family in each story.

We have been waiting for this newest Anthology from who I will call ‘The Fab Four!!” The great premise of single fathers who finally get a little freedom in the summer after they send their children off to sleep-away camp. What could be better, a few weeks in the summer of unencumbered freedom????? Oh the pain of it all!!!

Monster Hall Pass – Bru Baker
Bru Baker creates a world so believable as we begin with her story. Hugh Whitby
is a Dad who has adopted a little girl. He is a vampire and a part time vigilante. He is working in the human world; as an insurance companies complaint center; and for summer vacation he works feeding off bad guys!!!

So he takes his summer break “ to feed “… I absolutely loved the interactions between Hugh and Rykoff. Their chemistry was both off the charts. It was a good beginning to the chaos that continued thru all four of the stories !

Kismet and Cadavers- Jenn Moffatt
Jenn Moffat has written a magically delicious tale with how magic sometimes surrounds our everyday life. KJ and Thomas have all the chemistry needed to make this story great, prompted by the meddling daughter who helps them get started.

The twist at the end gives us hope that we might see them again! Loved it!

Elf Shot – TA Moore
Tammy Moore has written a word where there is peace between the fae and humans. But that can be broken easily with the disappearance of a human….
Conri is one of the Dad’s who has sent his son off to camp….and gets a call from the boy that says “ Dad we have a problem!!

Ms. Moore creates a rollercoaster of a ride that leaves us guessing. This is an epic story!!.

Wolf at First Sight – Rhys Ford
Ahhhh saved for last is Rhys Ford story about Levi Keller proprietor of a local bar out in the country with it possibly not being ‘humans only’. Joe Vanetti, cop has heard about a gang that has come back into his area and goes to the bar to investigate….

Joe trip over into the paranormal and will never be the same……learning everything he believed might have never been what it seemed, including his sweet ole grandma… I really enjoyed this story and ended the anthology beautifully .

Hugh is raising his adopted daughter on his own. He can't wait to drop her off at summer camp. Its his one time a year, to take care of his own needs. You see, Hugh is a vampire, and he needs to feed.
Rykoff is in the human world on a mission of his own when he comes across Hugh. Things with the 2 of them start off rocky due to Rykoff's preconceived notions. The 2 of them must work together to save the day. The question is-- will they be able to set their differences aside to get the job done?
Monster Hall Pass was a quick, fun read within the Bad, Dad, and Dangerous Anthology. I enjoyed the story. Bru Baker is a new to me author but I will definitely be reading more books from her after finishing this one.

When I saw the description of this book, I knew I wanted to read it. I received an ARC from the authors in exchange for an honest review.

I had high expectations going in and I was not disappointed. This is an anthology and the authors did an amazing job. The world building was tremendous, the characters were well fleshed out and the premise of the stories held my interest.

In each of the stories, there is a single father with a child, The fathers are all a supernatural being looking forward to some personal time while their child is at camp. It is clear that they love their children and are great dads. They find wonderful, interesting love interests as well. Each story is distinctive and entertaining. I found myself wanting to read more.

I have visited each author’s website to look for additional books to read. Well, I’m already a fan of Rhys Ford, I think I have almost everything she has written.

I truly enjoyed these stories and I plan on doing a re-read soon. I recommend this book.

tl:dr: two out of four, a better average than most collections I've tried.

'Monster Hall Pass,' by Bru Baker, is pretty good. It needed a better edit.

'Kismet and Cadavers,' by Jenn Moffatt. This felt disjointed to me. Part was the two POVs were hard to tell apart for over half the story. Part was interweaving of one character talking while the POV character thought things, same paragraph. And, there were odd time skips. Needed work.

'Elf Shot,' by TA Moore. Awful title, rich world, engaging characters. Best story so far.

'Wolf at First Sight,' by Rhys Ford. Well. I got close to the end, but only by skimming, and then I gave up. Very wordy, nothing unique, lots of repetition. Definitely the worst of this author I've read.

Each story brings a new perspective to life. From vampires and fey to wolves and witches you just wanted more. Fantastic world building to the unique qualities of each character let’s me see and feel what it’s like to be special. I hope each author makes them into a series or extends them into standalone.
