Long before Charissa began her murderous rampage through history, she was a young woman living in ancient Alexandria.
Oppressed by society and cursed by the color of her hair, Charissa had hardly seen the world beyond the four walls of her home. So, when her husband leaves for extended military duty, she takes the opportunity to tour the city her brother once loved. Little does she know the Fates have other plans in store for her when she runs into an exotic woman in the Rhakotis District. The encounter will change her life forever.
Kelsey Ketch is a young-adult/new-adult author, who works as a Wildlife Biologist and Data Analyst. During her free time, she can often be found working on her latest work in progress. She also enjoys history, mythology, traveling, and reading.
I originally had hoped to write Charissa’s backstory as a bonus chapter for Dark Reflections. However, at the time, Charissa refused to speak to me. Not surprising. During the entire time I wrote Dark Reflections, she was stubborn about revealing anything about herself. Thus, I published Dark Reflections without the bonus chapter. Then I wrote To Plant a Single Seed and became open to writing short stories. But it wasn’t Charissa who first approached me to start writing Dark Creation. It was Sekhmet, who started sharing bits and pieces of the events that occurred from her point of view. Then I started to learn more about the Hellenistic era, and finally, Charissa barged in and started opening up. Honestly, I had not expected her to be as thorough as she was with her story.
Dark Creations is told from Charissa’s point of view. Charissa has not been outside the home she lives in with her brutally abusive, and controlling husband much at all. In Charissa’s time, it is forbidden for a woman to go out alone. Then one day Charissa gets the opportunity to explore the outside world alone and jumps at the chance to see the outside world once again.
Once outside she doesn’t know which way to turn or who to trust. She wanders into the market district and runs into a beautiful woman there who helps Charissa out by giving her one of the best days of her life.
Dark Creations tells Charissa’s story of the day she ventured outside her home and the events that she witnessed that day. I would love to have known more about Charissa’s life before she was married and after she was married. Who was Charissa? Who is she now? Who is the mean man she married? What made him the way he is? Was it his customs? Or did a tragic event occur in his life to change him?
I can’t wait to further explore Charissa’s world in future books. Who is Charissa? What is she? Dark Creations is chocked full of secrets and while it revealed some it did not reveal all leaving me with many, many questions left unanswered and wanting more from this new world and Charissa herself.

I enjoyed this short story and would definitely recommend this author.
Story format: Short Story with author notes at end – obviously the author is knowledgeable about ancient Egypt and has researched many aspects.
This is Charissa’s back story which was intended to be a bonus chapter for Dark Reflections. The author writes beautifully: “Her slaves moved forward without a single word spoken to them, like soulless bodies, and shielded the sun from touching the young woman’s flesh.
The sight twisted knots into my already aggravated gut. Not only that, the young woman’s skin was as cold as ice to the touch compared to the hot, moist air of the Nile Delta. Like I was being touched by a corpse. I, too, was ruled by a man.”
Something in the back of my mind told me I shouldn’t. Something told me to run. I just couldn’t remember why, and the little voice within quickly slipped into a haze. “Yes. Let’s go home.”
“I am Sekhmet, your sire. And by the blood we just shared, we are now bound together.”
It was the scent of human blood, freshly killed. I licked my lips, ready to battle one of the lionesses for a taste.
Sekhmet : “That’s right. Drusus was an assassin sent to kill me. Apparently, the new emperor feels my quiet existence here in Egypt is a threat to the Roman Empire. Drusus confessed as much. Though I accidently slit his throat and dispatched his body in rage before asking why.”
I enjoyed this short story and it serves as a great introduction to the author, and the wrath of dark goddesses! Would definitely recommend.
Interesting story. Beginning of the series. Well developed characters. Some mystery and paranormal reality. I love Egypt. Enjoyable and definitely waiting for more.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A brilliant origin story for Charissa from Dark Reflections. An outsider and treated baldly due to her red hair. On a rare adventure outside she meets a women who changes her future
This book was really good. I thoughly enjoyed it from start to finish. This author knows how to write and keep you hanging on every word and hooked till the end.
A short but enjoyable peek into Charissa. Her origin story.
I loved the historical setting. Kelsey Ketch makes the times come to life with her beautiful writing. It is well research and then presented to us in a way where I felt I was right there with Charissa, on her walk. Amazing, and for our further learning, I like that the author includes what she used for her research, so we can even broaden our own knowledge. A huge plus for any history buffs!
It was interesting to get an idea of what Charissa went through in these early days. I wish we got a but more of what those years held. The image we get of her in Dark Reflections isn't very nice so seeing this other side was curious.
