Bernard "Hap" Kliban was a popular American cartoonist. He became an instant cartoon sensation after the publication of his groundbreaking book Cat in 1975. Some forty years after their initial appearance, Kliban’s quirky, colorful cat illustrations are adored icons and cherished friends of fans worldwide. One of the top cartoonists of the 20th century, Kliban contributed work to national magazines for over 30 years.
These tend to be rather more conventional cartoons than appear in Kliban's other collections, but then, for all it was/is a great cartoon market, I doubt Playboy was really that interested in surreal or absurdist cartoons in which there was no punchline. So, these cartoons are rather less typically "Kliban" than one finds in his other work, though his absurd sensibility and language play are certainly in evidence. Some of these will be, by current standards, offensive to some, notably the ones that are in effect rape jokes, but they are overall expertly drawn, and consistently funny.
