Return to the star-spanning human Republic of Duty, Honor, Planet as chief of Fleet Intelligence Jason McKay and his deadly executive officer Shannon Stark take on another dire threat to humanity!
General Antonov’s Protectorate returns to menace the Republic from without, while a possible military coup gestates within its borders.
Are the two connected? Will McKay and Stark be able to put the pieces together before it’s too late?

Born in Tampa, he attended Florida Southern College and graduated with a degree in History and a commission in the US Army as an Infantry officer. His lifelong love of science fiction began with Have Space Suit---Will Travel and the other Heinlein juveniles and traveled through Clifford Simak, Asimov, Clarke and on to William Gibson, Walter Jon Williams and Peter F Hamilton. And somewhere, submerged in the worlds of others, Rick began to create his own worlds. He has written over 70 books in over a dozen different series, and his short stories have been included in many different anthologies.
He currently lives in norther Wyoming with his wife and their dog. Besides writing and reading science fiction and fantasy, he enjoys outdoor photography, hiking and camping.
The saga of Jason McKay and Shannon Stark continues. General Antonov of the Protectorate has been captured by the industrial cartel. Plotting and characterization are Excellent in this series.
All of the dramatis personae are here, working with the utmost efforts to protect our vulnerable planet from the machinations of a madman who is unfortunately extremely cunning as well. The worst part is his ability to plan far ahead yet also accurately predict what his opponent will do next. Unlike reality, and with few exceptions the men & women who wear the uniforms behave with integrity, courage & a strong sense of duty. This is accompanied by the drive to do the right things at the best of their ability to protect their nation and all the innocent civilians who suffer from the enemy attacks. They have justifiable pride in their branch and unit, with strong esprit de corps yet willing to aid their brothers and sisters in other services with the same maximum effort.
I hope the author gives them enough time to start a massive, manpower & resource intensive scramble to at least struggle to replace some of their defensive abilities because otherwise an attack by more than a troop of Cub Scouts armed with sporks could possibly defeat them! 😄
The only thing I don’t like is the recurring bad guy.
Excellent second book in the series, I love the main to protagonist I still like Shannon the best. The story kept me on my toes and it was very fast-paced. The only thing I do not like in this trilogy is the recurring bad guy again again and again. Should’ve gotten rid of him brought somebody new on board such as a lieutenant or his second in command. Besides that issue I am going to read the third book of the trilogy. The series is still worth reading.
The book is a mix of modern warfare with science fiction. Decent character development with formulaic tension building. My problem with it is that the editor and publisher did not take the time to read it. There are numerous grammatical errors. Prepositions left out and gender switches in mid sentence that cause a reader to hard stop. Fix the grammar and you will have a finished product.
Very good! I think it may have been better than the first book. I would definitely recommend it to others. It was fast paced, and not as simplistic as many of the other Military/sci-fi books out there. And definitely not as cute as many others (that's a good thing).
A great story of our hero's running after a conspiracy only to find it runs much deeper while they chase after the General. A really intense space and ground fight.
Great book in the classic modern sci-fi style. I haven’t yet figured out the full timeline for Rick's tales but I'll get there. Thanks for the entertainment Rick.
just as good as the first book in the series. As soon as I get thru a few more in TBR stack, I am going to start on a Partlow reading binge soon I believe. I have read 8 of his books so far and each one exceeds the rating scale of 1-5
Space battles, ground battles bio- mech's villain's traitors hero's& self- sacrifice...did I mention a great story line too? It has everything thing but the kitchen sink...or did it??
As the previous book, book 2 has the action and characters. You feel you are part of the action and friends of the characters. Great, sudden plot twists keep you interested.
Jason, Shannon, Jock, Vinny, etc are all back in the 2nd book. It is approximately 6 years later. Former senator O’Keefe is now president. His daughter is a senator and has a daughter with the president’s advisor Glenn. Odd things seem to start happening. The president, Jason and Shannon all believe that it could be General Antonov. A colony is destroyed and brass casings are found. Is it the return of the protectorate or is it someone trying to make it look like the protectorate? Jason and other fly out to investigate.
Shannon and the rest of the team stay back. Was the attack a diversion? General Antonov is always three steps ahead. He is a brilliant psychopath who is bent on taking over ‘his’ planet, Earth. The team investigates a coup within the Colonial Guard or CG to see if there is any tie to the colony attack.
Without giving anything away, I will say that there are so many twists and turns, that no matter when you think you have it figured out, there is another layer of deception and planning. Some of the characters from the first book, do not survive this one and some turn traitor. If you enjoyed the first one, you will definitely enjoy this one.
Coronel McKay never expected to end up at a desk job. After fighting the forces of the Protectorate he was promoted to Coronel, the youngest in history, and parked behind the desk of the intelligence leader. Major Shannon Stark at his side, he struggles with his new role, until Senator Varley OKeefe comes to him with a problem. Rumors are flying that the colonial guard is plotting a Mutiny, and out on the edge of known space, a colony has been attacked, the tale tell signs of the Protectorate have been left in the ruin. Feeling the need to accompany the investigation McKay goes off planet leaving Major Stark to handle in the investigation of the CG, unfortunately the rabbit hole goes deeper than anyone could expect, and their will be a price to pay if they ever want to find their way out.
Rick Partlow is an excellent military science fiction writer, perhaps my favorite in some time. If you like the Lost Fleet series you will love this. I give it four stars, my highest rating for purely entertaining books, and recommend his writing to everyone.
MCKAY has a new position but the same problem. The politicians refuse to see the obvious consequences of leaving the dictator general to his own devises, while the capitalist look for ways to profit from the bio-machines and cheep labor that could replace the forced immigration to the colonies that has been eleminated by the new president. Even as his romance builds with Shannon, the gears are turning and once more the intelligence agencies are struggling to catch up.
