The second novel in a Warlock’s Guide to Medicine—featuring a new urban fantasy hero.
Leo Berlin never wanted to be a warlock. He’d trained as a doctor but dropped out of medical school when his sister disappeared right before his graduation. Now he spends his nights running a magical medical practice and searching for Nora.
After stopping the Thelemic Guild, and finding Nora with them in the process, he’s the only one who can rescue her. By preventing the Guild from tearing through the shroud obscuring access to the magical source, he’s earned a bit of respect from the deadly and dangerous Fairy Queen who’d granted him power.
Saving Nora should be easy now… only nothing is ever easy for Leo.
A strange attack on his apartment leaves him scrambling for answers, all while dealing with a sexy witch and long repressed feelings for his friend Bells. Other similar attacks throughout the city point to an uncontrolled warlock wreaking havoc. Leo might be the only one able to stop them—if he doesn’t get burned in the process.
SA Magnusson lives in Minneapolis and writes urban fantasy and scifi. As a practicing physician, SA wanted to mix medicine with a love for fantasy fiction, particularly urban fantasy, creating what one reader described as ER meets the Dresden Files.
Magnusson continues to deliver quality urban fantasy in her new series. While Leo doesn't advance his search for his sister, he does fall into a lot of trouble and the stakes are high as he tries to save a witch and her coven from magical attacks with deadly fire. It is interesting to see some of the other magical groups that weren't really explored in the other series get more limelight in this series. There wasn't as much with Leo healing some of the less fortunate and less powerful magical citizens of Minneapolis but I hope there will be in future books.
However, despite the potential of a different sort of story with a warlock doctor, we are getting the same sorts of stories.
And with that this going from “interesting” to “well, it isn’t bad”, perfectly serviceable but with nothing to really distinguish it from the rest of the pack.
The date rape is no big deal plot line is awfully offensive. There is so much to like about the characters but not enough to overlook non consensual sex.
