Absolutely loved this catch-up with all of the McKallisters from the Cake series by J. Bengtsson.
It's been a while since I read/listened to the Cake series, and it's still a standout series in my opinion. The books are emotional, with some levity so you don't feel like your heart is constantly being pummeled. I enjoyed the series, and how each book was so different and unique. So I jumped at the change to find out how the McKallisters have handled the isolation of the pandemic. I'll be honest, I'm not leaping at the chance to read pandemic romance, I leapt at the change to revisit old friends that I haven't seen in a while.
This audio is FANTASTIC! Hunker Down is the perfect balance of whimsical and funny and emotional. There are mood swings, the feelings of isolation, the feelings of failing, that we've all experienced over the last few months. But that is not the focus of the book. The focus of the book is finding the funny, finding the fun, finding the humor, in the situation so you don't let the mood swings and emotions drag you down. The focus of the book is how family can get you through anything, and that human connection may not always be in person, but it's still vital and life-affirming. It's about how we can help each other in big and small ways.
The narration was fantastic. Connor Crais and Stella Hunter did such an amazing job capturing the different spirits of the many, many, many characters, from the kids on up to the grandparents. The bonus "interview" with the family members at the end made me LAUGH SO DAMN HARD, so make sure you listen to that because it really encapsulates the family members so well.
Thank you, J. Bengtsson, for giving us this gift. This is certainly one of the best things to come out of this pandemic for me, and I'm sure I'll listen to it over and over again.
