Another in the Cake series - This is a short novella that you read after Keith's book. The idea is good. An actual book with current characters that went through quarantine and Covid. But, ugh.....reading about people in quarantine and all the thoughts and fears that were going on back then was not that fun to relive!!!!!!! I wanted to give this 2 stars there is really no info addition to the series it's just for fun - but the ending epilogue or the end interview questions was HILARIOUS. I laughed out loud through the whole thing! Like literally had a pain in my side from laughing - 3 stars

I loved catching up with the McKallisters! It was a tough topic to cover, but J. Bengtsson did a fabulous job connecting with several fears that many of us have faced in dealing with Covid. The story keeps up to date with all of the McKallister clan and tells us how they handled the lockdown. Connor Crais and Stella Hunter narrate the audio! They are absolutely fantastic and did a super job taking on the various characters. There are some bonus interviews at the end with the characters. My favorite was Connor's performance as Scott. It was hilarious!

I had it set in my mind that I would never read any books that included the pandemic. Because let’s face it, we’ve all had enough of it. But this is the MCKALLISTERS! I put this off until it was available in KU and I’m happy about that. I can’t say that I would have enjoyed this when it was released in October 2020. Things were still too tense.

I was happy that no part of this went near the political drama that has pervaded this pandemic. That would have made me shut the book and walk away no matter which side was chosen. Instead, this takes place at the very start of the pandemic when people were just being called to shelter in place. Jake and Quinn are each just coming home from one of their tours.

I have to admit that I felt Ms. Bengtsson did a great job writing this short story, despite the topic. To top it off, she kept the craziness of the McKallister clan the same. Only one part got serious with a conversation between Jake and Casey, but it was brief.

This is not a standalone by any means. You need to know the background stories of this crazy and lovable family to truly enjoy this novella. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed the Cake series.

I've been a fan of the McKallisters since I first read CAKE and fell in love. Since then I've enjoyed all of J. Bengtsson. She makes me feel and laugh like no other author can. She writes hilarious, yet real situations, not forced silly, with characters that seem very real to me. So while, I'm not a fan of novellas, I couldn't wait to read HunKer Down - and I'm so glad I got to enjoy.

Hunker Down with the McKallisters is a great reunion of the characters from her various McKallister books. We get an update on their lives and see how they navigate COVID. It was HILARIOUS. I was so busy giggling that my son's Shadow (support person) asked me what was going on and I had to read her huge chunks and give her quite a bit of the backstory. I mean come on! Scott kicking Quinn out of the house cause he's 'dirty' and they are only down to 12 rolls of toilet paper- 12! So no way can they deal with one more a$$hole. There were just sooo many seriously laugh out loud moments!

But as usual, J. Bengtsson did a great job of balancing the funny with the real scary emotions and stress of dealing with COVID and worrying about your love ones.

EXCELLENT read - even if it was only a novella and I wished it was longer!

I will warn you that you really should read the other McKallister books before this novella. And if you already have, then don't hesitate to one-click. You won't want to miss revisiting this awesome family and enjoying all their craziness! Seriously!

I just wonder now how soon I can go back for a reread????

This is a fun little bonus, and an opportunity to spend time with one of my favourite romantic fiction families, the McKallisters, as they endure COVID lockdown.

Set during the early days of COVID, the McKallisters are suffering just like everybody else.
• Jake and Kyle are both positive and are stuck in isolation together.
• Emma is continuing her work as an ER nurse, now on the dangerous front lines while her husband, Finn, is trying to corral the chaos at his family home (and trying to explain why TP’ing a house isn’t a good idea during a nation-side shortage).
• Quinn is trying to find a family member to take him in.
• Keith and Samantha are hiding out at their place.
• Grandma and grandpa, Casey and Kenzie are on home-schooling and entertainment duty for all of the grandkids who are holed up together.

It’s a madhouse, and a very real reflection of the fears, the uncertainty, and the crazy time that was early 2020. But, as always, this family pull together and lean on each other to get through it all, and this quick read made me laugh and made me smile, and I enjoyed getting to spend some more time with this mad bunch.

This is a bonus novella, and is definitely not a must read in term of series continuity, but it’s an enjoyable read.

4 stars for the family fun.

Fun novella from the Cake series. FYI If you haven’t read the cake series or at least a few of those books, this read will not make any sense to you. In this one each of the family members has some time on the page. They are going thru quarantine during Covid and a few actually get the virus. In addition, we get interviews with a lot of the family done by a journalist. That was fun too. Recommended to Cake fans!

I absolutely loved the Cake Series but I could not finish this short book on the Pandemic. Has nothing to do with the author’s writing just could not stomach the content.

Absolutely loved this catch-up with all of the McKallisters from the Cake series by J. Bengtsson.

It's been a while since I read/listened to the Cake series, and it's still a standout series in my opinion. The books are emotional, with some levity so you don't feel like your heart is constantly being pummeled. I enjoyed the series, and how each book was so different and unique. So I jumped at the change to find out how the McKallisters have handled the isolation of the pandemic. I'll be honest, I'm not leaping at the chance to read pandemic romance, I leapt at the change to revisit old friends that I haven't seen in a while.

This audio is FANTASTIC! Hunker Down is the perfect balance of whimsical and funny and emotional. There are mood swings, the feelings of isolation, the feelings of failing, that we've all experienced over the last few months. But that is not the focus of the book. The focus of the book is finding the funny, finding the fun, finding the humor, in the situation so you don't let the mood swings and emotions drag you down. The focus of the book is how family can get you through anything, and that human connection may not always be in person, but it's still vital and life-affirming. It's about how we can help each other in big and small ways.

The narration was fantastic. Connor Crais and Stella Hunter did such an amazing job capturing the different spirits of the many, many, many characters, from the kids on up to the grandparents. The bonus "interview" with the family members at the end made me LAUGH SO DAMN HARD, so make sure you listen to that because it really encapsulates the family members so well.

Thank you, J. Bengtsson, for giving us this gift. This is certainly one of the best things to come out of this pandemic for me, and I'm sure I'll listen to it over and over again.

McKallister's bring me joy! 😂

There I was today, sitting in a doctor's office, getting allergy testing done...lots of waiting involved and plenty of time to read! The door was open and I wondered? Did they think I was losing my mind for absolutely laughing my butt off while sitting in that examining room... alone?

Well, this book and those crazy, loveable McKallisters, in Covid lock down, stuck in various places with questionable familial combos, was the reason for my LOL'ing myself silly today! So many funny but also emotionally charged moments here to dig into.

There hasn't been one Cake related novel by the talented Jill Bengtsson that I haven't adored. Let's add this the list of quickly devoured and totally loved treasures, giving me another peek into the lives of one of my favorite families. If the anticipation of reading something new about any member of the McKallister clan brings a cheap thrill to your book loving heart as much as it does to mine, click this little treat and spend more time back in their special world. It might just satisfy your hunger for more until Quinn's story comes our way. Waiting has never felt so good!

When Jill Bengtsson announced that she planned to write a series of vignettes about the McKallister family from her best-selling Cake series, her Banana Binder fan group was ecstatic. Who better to get readers through the vicissitudes of the pandemic than Jake and Casey, Kyle and Kenzie, Emma and Finn, and the rest of the family and in-laws.

Optimism was rewarded and expectations were exceeded. The stories were funny and touching updates, connecting with our greatest fears while we identify with toilet paper crises and quarantines. The epilogue is everything.

Now we have the additional joy of hearing them as well. Connor Crais and Stella Hunter, combined with Jill’s vivid writing, bring an experience that will have the listener rolling in laughter and empathetically tearing up, sometimes both at the same time.

Even if you are new to Jill’s books, this would be a terrific introduction to the Cake series. Especially the bonus material at the end.

So hunker down with the McKallister family. You won’t regret it.

So much fun with these weird and wonderful characters.

This is a must read for fans of the Cake series. It is the expected finely tuned mix of laughs and pathos. In very short bursts, there are familiar profiles of characters and little glimpses of the continuing development of their personalities and lives.
However, more than just a rewarding amuse bouche of her series for her loyal fans, Bengtsson gives us a time capsule of the experience of this pandemic from the viewpoint of her characters. It is accurate and a little confronting as well as reassuring and entertaining.

This companion novella to the Cake series was such a little gem. At only 124 pages (just over 2 hours on audio) it went by in a flash, but I loved the glimpse into how the (growing!) McKallister clan was handling lockdown. Bengtsson did an amazing job of capturing the fears and uncertainties of life during a pandemic, but also injected it with her signature humor and heart. There were some laugh out loud moments – like Casey trying to wrangle three small children at home, with the youngest ending up in the litter box – and some that hit me right in the feels. The bonus content at the end included interviews with all the characters and was the perfect cherry on top.

I liked getting glimpses into all the couple’s current situation, but I don’t think I was in the right mood for COVID quarantine stories. The highlight of this novella was the interview questions at the very end with all the characters, it was pure McKallister hilariousness! I think what had me struggling the most with this novella was the narration, after just listening to all the previous stories I was expecting the same voices for the characters. I was not a fan of the change of narrators, they did a good job narrating but it just wasn’t the voices I have come to associate with all the McKallister’s.

Whenever I read something from this author I always think, she must have sons cause she has their evil mindset down. SOOO FUNNY! This boy mom feels like a kindred spirit. Wink!

She also has the gift of one minute making me laugh so hard I might tinkle and the next I am welling up. Most of the time it blindsides me too. Ugh it is so wrong to do that to me. LOL

“Bunker Down with the McKallisters” provides these amazing interactions between one of my all time favorite book families. Sigh. Closing my eyes reliving all the funny, sweet, and sassy moments. SO GOOD!

Please tell me you have read the entire Cake Series. If not, WTH, GET ON IT NOW. You are missing out plus it gives all the details that makes this story more exceptional. This family represents survivors in a beautiful way. How they rise above and shine is more than impressive. Yikes I am getting a bit teary thinking about it.

This story is SO RELATABLE! It travels down the early days of this crazy pandemic. It touches on the scary details of this year in an authentic way. This author has added humor and created a comforting story. This story makes my heart happy, adding levity in what for so many has been a terrifying year. Thank You Ms Bengtsson!

P.S. OMG the interview at the end of this story is PRICELESS! Haaa haaa. Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO

I really enjoyed this novella!  It was so nice to visit the McKallisters again, to remember the interesting characters, and to learn of their lives and children.  In these strange times, going through quarantine with them made it seem more relatable.  Like many others, I connected with this novella on an emotional level.

Stella and Conner are great together in duet, and delivered excellent performances of all these characters we know and love from the series.  I can't wait to hear more from these two narrators together and more of the McKallister family would be amazing!

This was a book that Cake fans needed. Especially during a scary time in the world. All our favorite characters were hunkered down together during the pandemic and drama, sweet moments, and hilarious moments happened. When some of the family were covid-19 positive I was scared right along with them. This book really showed how we all felt and all our worries. I am so glad the author had this book for readers during this time. I bet it helped others know they weren't alone. And the narrators knocked it out of the park.

I loved catching up with the McKallisters.

Listening to how my book boyfriends are now husbands and Dads, it was fun to discover their kid's personalities, how their toilet paper was rationed, and how even living in this new world of uncertainity, family was still the priority.

The Cake series remains one of my favorites.
I've re-listened to Cake 4 times since it's release.

LOVE these characters. ❤️

I just finished the audio of the Hunker Down novella and am in awe of how this collection of stories about the McKallister family made me feel, again. I read the stories as they were published in the author group a few months ago, but the audio and putting them all together makes it so special.
1. I cried listening on my way to work about the connection between Jake and Kyle.
2. I laughed at the fun times.
3. I swooned and then some at the shower scene.
Jill Bengtsson you created a special family and made the most out of some scary times writing about them again. Thank you ❤️

If you have not read the Cake series, please stop what you are doing and go read them. It is one of my favorite series of all time.

As Amazing as the rest of the Cake series!

The McKallisters are my favorite book family. They are talented, so funny, and yet just so real in their own loveable idiosyncrasies. Oh yeah, each book has a heart-warming love story as well. Hunker Down with the McKallisters gave me more time with this incredible family. If you haven't read each of the books, start there, and then Hunker down for this novella. I loved it!

Hunker Down (Cake #5.5) is exactly why The McKallisters are one of my favorite families. Although this novella was tough to read at times considering it centered around the pandemic, it was worth seeing how the family navigated through those difficult times. Of course there was hilarious banter, heartwarming moments and the epilogue with the family interviews really had me cracking up with laughter.

I reacted to this novella much more emotionally than I expected I would. It was a wonderful story about how the family gets through the situation. Lots of laughs and lots of tears too. I loved the interviews at the end with each of the characters.

I really enjoyed the narration in this novella. Stella and Connor did an amazing job taking on all of the McKallisters and even the Perrys.

Nothing better than more of the McAllisters! I loved catching up with the family! And of course, it did not disappoint. The family was up to their usual antics, The Perry's, Scott, Keith and the rest. The banter was excellent as usual from Jill. You really feel like these characters are real and you can feel everything they feel due to Jill's great writing.
