At 10:47 AM, Nava Katz is given a magic destiny. Turns out it’s non-refundable. Destiny can suck it.
Nava Katz is an expert at burying her lost dreams and wielding cynicism as her personal brand. Then she interrupts her twin brother's induction ceremony into a secret supernatural society, accidentally torches his life-long dream, and steals his destiny as a Chosen Demon Hunter.
Suddenly she’s got dangerous new powers she can’t control, a centuries-old Brotherhood rooting for her to crash and burn, and her twin’s life hanging in the balance. Her designated shadow? Rohan Mitra, a brilliant, dangerous slayer whose inner demons earn nods of respect from actual ones.
With demons on her tail, sabotage at every turn, and her own doubts trying to take the wheel, survival is only half the battle. The real challenge is believing she’s worthy of this power—and a second chance.
The Brotherhood wants her gone. The demons want her dead. First day as a Chosen One and she's already nailing it.
Ready for snark, steam, and supernatural smackdowns? Nava’s your girl.
Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction books, and never looked back.
She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.
Quick Sitch: Nava Katz finds out that she's a female demon hunter, and that's a problem. Mostly because misogyny and there's never been one before and no one knows how to deal with it. The story builds as Nava comes into her own and learns that there are certain players out there actively working their way towards an apocalypse and she's got to stop it. All while falling in love with Rohan Mitra, a former rock god turned demon hunter. Romance and apocalypses go together, like peas and bicycles. Whatever, it works, just go with it.
Overview: I'm digging Deborah Wilde's writing, and while the three series that I've read (yes, three in a row because when I obsess I OBSESS), have their similarities - paranormal stories with Jewish heroines and diverse characters set in Vancouver - I do love that each has their own spin and ythe heroines are at different stages in life. Nava's the youngest and most immature but also the one who goes through it in terms of the way she's treated by every misogynist in the Brasha organizations and basically everyone thinking that she's a twit, until they learn differently. The story goes to some fantastically weird places, and it stretches the bounds, for sure, but I still enjoyed most of it. My struggle was with some of the humor (some lands, some doesn't) and
Book 1: The intro is good, kept me interested, and her Pretty Woman-esque take on sex was a thing. I appreciate that she owned her sexuality and wasn't about to be shamed. I liked it but I'm never a fan of naming genitalia. Just not my bag.
Book 2 (Sting): Dives further into actual demon hunting, introduces some key players to the overarching storyline. There's some OW/OM contact, but in the context of this series, didn't bother me and was actually that kind of emotional push/pull that surprised me because of how much I enjoyed it.
Book 3 (Need): This one introduces Malik and I wasn't mad about it at all. The danger ratchets up even more and the blurring of lines, plus some emotional payoff for the romance.
Book 4 (Crave): The one where the story starts to go off on a tangent, and it definitely felt like the need to mess with Rohan and Nava was more plot point driven than not. Feels like the overarching storyline gets bigger but the small moments could have used more time to really make you care for all these characters in a way that can impact any big conflicts that are coming up. I liked them all, but I really felt the narrowness of of that first person POV holding things back.
Book 5 (Fall): The penultimate episode in this Buffy-esque takeoff and for sure I felt that Season 6-7 fatigue at this point. It's all danger but the need to pull back kind of kills the momentum a wee bit. And that final battle? Kookydukes.
Book 6 (Burn): The finale that had ALOT of ground to cover and it felt like it. It continues that feeling of nothing but danger everywhere you turn but a lack of commitment to it that takes it down a notch. Now, I'm a romance centered reader at heart, so I didn't mind that alot of this is about pairing up the couples that you felt connecting in the background of Nava and Rohan's lives. I just wish I could have seen more of it. And the Deus Ex Machina vibe to the ultimate resolution was an "well...*blinks* alrighty then" kind of moment. I mean, look I'm all for suspension of disbelief. I LOVE the OTT moments I am right there willing to buy into what you're selling....I just wish the pitch was a little more solid.
Bottom Line: In the end I liked this, even though some of the humor didn't work for me, but I do think it's something that is more for fans of UF-PNR who prefer it a little danger but mostly safe when all is said and done.
I got the box set in my unlimited book but if I had paid for book one I would of not continued the first two books was very slow and I found are two main characters hard to read and Ro was hard to like after he kisses his ex and hangs out with her then be with Nava then he gets a blow job from a tramp, they was undercover but did not need to go that far she didn't.I felt for Nava she could not kiss guys because she was hurt and was slowly warming to trust him then he kisses his ex in front of her.I was routing for someone new for her after that.the main storyline was good and different but the childish behaviour was hard to read and get into.
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting #2 - Babyslay vs. psycho spawns. I missed the first book, how sad! Not reading book one did not take anything away from book two. She's an abrasive, smart mouth with an over-sex-drive, which is OK, because she can kick butt. I love the way Rohan trains her as she's fighting for her life. Ms. Wilde is a wonderful author: her colorful descriptions; the humor; a reasonable amount of vulgar language. It's true that not all real people use vl, much less curse. The action, fast pace, humorous plot along with the good descriptions holds the reader in a tight grip. After the first sex scene, the story kicked into overdrive. There's sex, but don't let that stop you from reading this entertaining book. All sex scenes boremeoutofmyeverlovingmind, I'm not a prude. Paperback. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need #3- More Babyslay. More of the well written series, with the humor, the colorful descriptions and twisting plot that makes Need almost as interesting as Sting. The action and romances continue and it's hard to put the book down. The vulgar language is kept to a reasonable level and the sex scenes still boremetodeath (not just this author's, all authors). I contacted the author to review this book after reading Sting. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Crave #4 – Another well written, action-packed, fast-paced, intrigue filled book. This must the best so far with the well thought out plot of nonstop twists and turns and surprises that keeps the reader glued to the pages. The characters show growth and even the minor characters have enough to them to keep the reader interested. The vulgar language is actually toned down quite a bit and there’s plenty of graphic sex – skip them if GS is not your cuppa, I find all GS boring. While not a cliffhanger, there’s more coming. Ms. Wilde does an excellent job with her descriptions. 4*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Fall #5 - I did have a problem with the chapters about the Pride parade. I'm not sure if I was getting a lecture or Pride forced down my throat, but I got bored quick with much of the information that didn't matter; clothing, repetition, etc. (You don't know me so don't think I dislike gays; boring is boring regardless of subject matter.) I love this series but this book didn't have the magic like the previous books did. Maybe it was too much unimportant information (or filler is the impression I sometimes received) and not the usual fast paced intrigue that this series has in bunches. The book is still good but I had to work at reading it over several days; either too wordy or sometimes I was just confused. I usually finish one of Ms. Wilde's book in one day; you can't put them down, they're so entertaining and addicting. Still, I'm looking forward to the next book. 4*
Burn #6 - Do not read this book without reading the previous books! All good things must end and I really enjoyed this series. Burn picks up where Fall ends and the pace is fast and hard. All the storylines come together ending the series perfectly. Nava and Rohan having grown throughout the series, mesh well together and with all the factions in their joined fight against evil.
Nava is not the Babyslay of the second book, but a well developed woman confident in her abilities and recognized by others as a proven leader. Even Rohan keeps getting better and works perfectly for and with Nava. There's plenty of the usual and unusual characters to keep every reader's interest, along with the humor.
Ms. Wilde has done a wonderful with this series. Her talent for writing, along with her intense storytelling and vivid descriptions, topped with plenty of imagination and humor makes it difficult to put one of her books down. Leonie is one of favorite characters and I'm glad to see her story continue on from here. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
This series has it all. Great characters, great world-building, great story arc, all tied together with sass, steam and suspense. I loved every page of every book. I read and reviewed all six books individually but have bought this to have them all in one volume together. Nava is the good bad girl, a rebel who tap-dances. Her life changes irrevocably when she accidentally earns admission to a secret brotherhood, said brotherhood being extremely put out, to say the least, that she is *GASPS* female. Nava is a wonderful character, rude and raucous but loyal and loving. She grew up through the whole series and just improved with every book. The men that she has to work with are all smoking hot and arrogantly stubborn but I loved them all anyway. Even her arsehole brother. Equally brilliant are Nava's best friend, Leonie, and the very surprising Ms. Clara. Both irresistible characters, fun and clever and extraordinary. Deborah Wilde absolutely knocked it out of the park with Nava and Co. Madness, monsters, mayhem, magic, mischief, mirth.... it's got the lot. Above all, it's full of feelings, very sexy, and laugh out loud funny. Just buy it.
... But I really don't appreciate the multiple detailed sexscenes. I totally understand the soaring heights of consuming passion, but no warnings mostly THEY DON'T add anything to the world point of story arc and can be skipped over easily , as in fighting demons and the dark. Apart from that we get really great action and magic and twisting turns to the very last page. It was also kind of interesting to read about the Jewish faith such as it is portrayed ~ thaat part is done amazingly well. Have not seen much religion in these kind of books, unless you go really very old stuff like where faeries come from or the old Norse gods...
I find that you usually get great smut and weak characters and/or plots or vice versa but Deborah was able to do it all! She created fully in-depth characters with great story lines and fun sexy times. Nava’s snark is perfect and Roh is hot! Loved the KU and audio books!
What a ride! This book drew me in from the first page and kept me enthralled. World and character building is amazing. I haven't read this author before but I will be looking for more of her work. I definitely recommend this book.
This series was brilliant start to finish. I could not recommend it enough, you will love nava as much as I do by the end I promise. She is messy and lovable, surrounded by a cast that comes to life.
These books had everything I want in a book. Snarky, strong yet vulnerable characters, sexy (well done, btw!) romance and a happily ever after ending. Keep up the great work!
Snarky, laugh out loud, ridiculous fun! From the girl who is not wanted to the belle of the ball with her own hea. Nava is amazing! This series is an amazing adventure and a different and fun take on demons and the slaying there of. Don’t miss it!
I’ve just binge read this series it’s great fun one of the things I love most about it is the love of music from the writer that is seen in all her books.
Got about 4 chapters into book 3 and couldn't take any more. Liked the storyline and was enjoying it until I got onto the second book. I felt like there are only so many times I could re read what characters liked to wear and what part they played. Ugh
Nava and Rohan a true hardcore love story. Many wonderful other awesome characters to energise and wow you, love the thrill ride Ms Wilde ❤️ more please
