A town practically cut off from the rest of the country, Griffin is always the last to know about everything. Fax is the most reliable method of communication and the local newspaper is the main source of outside information.
When a freak car accident occurs on the outside of town, no one thinks much of it. That is until deer are found sick and covered in an unusual growth, and they lose contact with the next town.
Cut off and isolated from the rest of the world, Griffin is unaware of the threat growing outside the safety of their little town. One that could endanger their entire existence.
Not a bad story at all, although I wish the book had been longer to explain more about what had happened and what was going to happen in the future! I'm not sure whether I missed a prequel to this or whether there's a sequel, but it was a nifty little book.
My major issues were the grammatical errors that cropped up every once n a while. Some might have been typos.
That aside, it wasn't bad at all! I'd be more than happy o read a sequel if there was one!
I won't spoil the story but I'm so thankful for a survival story full of hope without people turning on each other, without escaped evil prisoners, madmen bent on conquering stalking the land. No just good honest people supporting and loving each other even in the darkest of hours.
This was a good book but not one of Druga's best. As usual, Druga puts a different spin on post-apocalyptic stories, and in this case, a pesticide used to kill an insect that was engineered to get rid of another pest is causing the death of humans within a 24 hour period.
This was a short book, but it took a while to get going. In part, this is because the town in which the story took place, was isolated and technologically constrained resulting in intermittent cellular signals and internet connectivity. This built the level of suspense as it was determined the degree to which the rest of the world was dealing with the infection.
The story took a twist when it appeared the infection was dying out only to be replaced by another threat, a fungus that grew on anything non-living placing the town in jeopardy. There is some interesting character development as folks try to get through the disaster, but those story arcs were never concluded.
The ending was "ok" although we are never given the impression that they will live happily ever after. There could have been thoughts of a sequel, but enough of the story was concluded that it seems unlikely (to me anyway).
~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~
Jacqueline Druga continues to write intriguing apocalyptic/post apocalyptic stories. My main complaint about the books I’ve read of hers is that sometimes they are a bit too short and that doesn’t allow the story enough time to breath and develop the characters. In this book, we get plenty of character setup before the disaster hits. However, I still wish it was longer.
The story was interesting and the disaster was fleshed out decently. I’d actually enjoy a novella or something to go with this story to further show how the world changes after the disaster has more time to form. The characters are varied and have difference responses to the disaster. It was nice to read a story about the apocalypse that didn’t express the narrative that humans are generally bad and do evil things to each other in a crisis.
Suspense built up well because of the isolation of the community.
Narration was good and the pacing was consistent. I didn’t hear any issues.
Griffin is a small town on Route 66 in Arizona. The town is cut off and isolated from the rest of the country. They are always the last to know of current events.
The “Pred” bug was created to wipe out the stink bug, but it got out of hand and has damaged crops all over the country with only a few communities left untouched.
The Department of Agriculture came up with a fungal pesticide to kill the Pred bug starting with a five-day blitzkrieg campaign using this spray on any affected towns.
Luckily, Griffin is not affected by the bugs and not being sprayed. The town is unaware of the environmental threat this spraying has caused outside the safety of their community… until they lose contact with Seever, the next town on Route 66.
There are some memorable characters, my favorite is Crazy Ada. It was nice to find the “Griffinites” did not turn on each other, but they shared responsibility and took care of each other.
As always Druga wrote an amazing hook that kept me hooked the whole way through, dreading the last page, and sighing with a mix of satisfaction and needing more at the end. Very different apocalypse, one I've never seen. Truly unique and interesting. And dammit, I want more! Put this one at the top to your to be read pile and get comfortable. Once you start reading, you really are going to want to finish it.
This author always has told unique and intriguing stories in this genre and this book is no different. It is a fascinating tale, the root of which is human hubris. She has also had some of her wonderful stories undercut by dreadful editing, but this book is well-edited, with no real issues there. The ending was arguably the weakest part as it fell a bit abrupt, but ends trending toward the positive which felt good. Excellent story.
Omnicide...I didn't even know what it meant. This is a story about a town full of people who are good. It is what you think all small towns are like. Will they survive? I loved the characters...they had some pretty deep backstory attached to them...which made for unforgettable characters. I'd like to know more about their struggle to survive...but I'll also be satisfied if this is the end.
Omnicide is the story of a fungus meant to kill an invasive insect species which turns out to kill nearly everything else alive as well. People, plants, wildlife, nothing is spared the wrath of the pestilence. A small town manages to survive by luck and isolation. There is a remarkable amount of character development in this book. Avoid if suicide triggers you, otherwise enjoy one of the most unique apocalypses I've read!
Jackie Druga has done it again. She continually comes up with new ideas. When you start her book you immediately fall in love with the characters. You think you know where you’re going but before you’ve gotten too far down the road you find out you are not even close. Once you pick this book up don’t plan anything else. You won’t be able to put it down. Must read!
This book gave me nightmares. The story moves so fast and just gets more frightening as the pages turn. This is such a believable story that I called my mom to check on her. I will never look at a chemtrail again without worrying about what there spraying. We are one genetically modified bug away from omnicide.
I have read many of this author's stories because I find her characters very real and I become very invested in their lives. Even the unlikable ones. Also she always comes up with a fresh take on the apocalypse, my favorite genre. This book shows real growth in skill while keeping all that goodness. Thank you.
I really enjoyed this book. Ms. Druga has done it again with her amazing characters and intense story telling. It was a very dark novel with just a touch of light at the end.
Really enjoyed the story and the characters, it was an unique end of times plot but not so violent or creepy as some. I would really like to find out if and/or how the town and the world survived.
Loved this book. Different take on an apocalypse. And why we need to leave some things alone. Especially what is in glaciers. ( we didn’t learn from Jurassic Park. ) I highly recommend this author. Grab this and enjoy.
Hooked from the minute I started reading and didn't put it down till the end, wish there was a proper ending explain how everyone got on though, bit disappointing
If you're looking for a stand alone end of the world read, then this is the one. I got so much more then what I was expecting, and you will to. This is one that I will read again.
Ever so often a Jacqueline Druga book passes by that I missed reading. All I can say is where does she come up with her stories? Her mind must be twisted. I absolutely love her books. Good read.
As usual for a Ms. Druga novel this book is filled with typos. Unlike many of her books it is also filled with foul language. The storyline was pretty poor too.
While I enjoyed the story and charts I was once again left dissatisfied with the ending. There where more than a couple of loose ends. I personally don't like loose ends.
Riveting read! I could hardly put my reader down. ( Imagine a busted bladder!) You will love this read! Ms. Druga is one of my favorite authors and this did not let me down!
I really loved this story, I just wanted more of it. I hate when a good book ends. Maybe the author will decide to continue in another book, I sure hope so.
As usual Jacqueline Druga didn't disappoint with this book. Well written, easy to read and once I started I couldn't stop! Keep them coming Miss Druga x
