This was an enjoyable read, a little slow at first but plenty of activity later. Rebecca had always felt responsible for her siblings and she was grateful that Lady Hayward had come to an arrangement with her father, the Duke of Landon, to be their chaperone. This took a great weight off Rebecca’s shoulders. There was only one gentleman she felt a connection to and that was Jeffrey, Marquess of Richmond. Unfortunately Jeffrey has problems caused by a vindictive person and is wary of bringing shame on Rebecca’s reputation. I felt that Jeffrey was a little naive when dealing with his blackmailer, he was a marquess after all. Or maybe, he was just too nice a person? Rebecca shows herself to be a determined and loyal person. I just wish there had been more of a comeuppance for the perpetrator. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I found this extremely frustrating--the hero who was so painfully proper, his naïvté and weakness in repelling a married woman's advances, and especially the blackmail scheme, in which he didn't even think to investigate that he'd been coerced into buying.

Apparently, lots of readers will gush over a book because it's "sweet" (there should be a warning on these freebies so those of us who avoid saccharine can pass these by...), but I prefer some realism. It's also hilarious that the vast majority of these books involve men who get away with all kinds of wanton and even degenerate behaviors whilst remaining wildly popular in society simply because they're men, but in this book, our straight-laced, strangely immature hero is a social pariah thanks to one mere rumour. Clearly, London society exists in alternate realities that are complete opposites, and I stumbled into the prissy one.

The first book in a new series. Another well written novel from the author which is well paced & I read it in two sittings. The characters have depth & I really liked Rebecca who proved she had a backbone & willing to fight for Jeffery, I liked Jeffrey who was almost too honourable for his own good & he nearly lost Rebecca because of it. I was drawn in from the start & my interest was held until the final page. I look forward to the rest of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Bad writing a story does not make

The writing is stiff throughout. People don't talk like this or act like this. No fun at all. Save your time.

One of those regency novels that cherry picks which aspects of society and the ton to apply.

When it came to scandal, a woman would be ruined. Given the cut direct, not invited to polite society, etc. A man would emerge relatively unscathed.

Additionally it made no sense why Lady Kensington had such power. If the rumors were so powerful, anyone could just do that to her and end her influence.

Jeffery made foolish decision after foolish decision. I couldn’t stomach it.

And the attraction was based on absolutely nothing. Their conversation was mostly vapor, the substance of which was mostly drawn out arguments of «  you mustn’t associate with me, for your own good ! » & «  maybe I don’t care! » «  but - I - care too much to let you! » ad nauseum.

Half a star because they decided on their solution rather than happenstance solving it for them.

This looks to be another wonderful series for Ms Pearson. The well-developed storyline is filled with mystery, manipulation, blackmail, despair and finally love. Jeffery certainly seems to get into trouble when his sense of responsibility overshadows his common sense. I really liked how Rebecca had such faith in Jeffery from their first meeting and the final chapters bring everything to a head nicely. I was hooked from the very beginning and highly recommend it to Regency lovers.

A very good historic romantic novel!

When fate allows two kindred soles to meet the attraction is undeniable. The premise of the story. Very interesting events make it apparent that their attraction will not be allowed to grow and flourish. But love, intelligence, and determination will open the path to true love. Neatly shown in this book, thank you, Jack.

Sweet Regency romance

Lady Rebecca is new to Society. She seems a husband, but it is her chaperone who suggests he should be more than just suitable.
Lord Richmond is not actively seeking a wife, but nor is he looking to cuckold a fellow Lord, yet that is what he is accused of.
So begins a most unusual love story. Rebecca is loyal and steadfast, Richmond is decent (and a bit wet to my mind) and refuses to risk Rebecca's good name. There is a wicked lady and nefarious plans to overcome. Enjoyed it.

Strong Heroine, But the Hero and the Plot...

I liked the heroine in this story very much. We see at the beginning that she is a dutiful daughter who has taken on too much responsibility for her siblings after her mother's death. She and her twin sisters are coming to London for their first season. They make the acquaintance of Lady Hayward, who quickly helps take charge of the girls as their chaperone for the season. I’ll admit I was not quite sure about her at first, wondering if she had an ulterior motive. The heroine is a determined young lady who wishes to form her own opinions about people, and she is very steadfast and firm once she draws her own conclusions. The lady has strength of character, which I love to see in a romance. The poor hero, however, is quickly made a fool by a conniving woman. He certainly came across as a decent, serious man before disaster struck, but the woman contrived a situation that paints him a rogue when he is not.

I had several problems with his book, unfortunately. For one thing, the hero and heroine didn't actually meet until almost a third of the way through the book. It's hard to get a romance going if the couple hasn't met yet! By then, the hero was already a social pariah, constrained by the rumors. I almost gave up on the book at the 50% point because I really dislike the blackmail trope. In this book, it seemed to consume the latter half of the story, putting any other aspect of the story firmly in the backseat—including character and romantic plot development. This is where the hero disappointed me in terms of his character. He so wants to protect the heroine that he isn't smart about what's going on. While he is sweet and serious, he didn't appear to be stupid early on, so I didn't like it when he then became so. I felt like the ending was abrupt, both with the wrapping up of the blackmail aspect—and I do wish that the hero had more to do with figuring out what to do about it—and the romance aspect. After all the trials and tribulations, I think they deserved a bit more of a victory lap than they got. As this is the start of a series, though, we will undoubtedly learn more about what happens to them in future installments.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Courage

This was a very average book that held my interest somewhat until the 66% mark. At that point I could not quite understand why a Marquess allowed a Lady to continue abusing him. Also Rebecca's father was a Duke which no one would presume to start any rumors about. So, the story line went downhill at that point. Since I can take just so much self abuse I stopped reading and could care less what happened. I therefore would not recommend this to any other readers.

Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset Books 1-6
1. Mistaken for a Rake
5 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance Mistaken for a Rake: Lady Rebecca and Lord Jeffrey Richmond in the Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset by Rose Pearson and this review was given freely.
A nice opening for the series. The Duke of Landon takes his three oldest girls for their first London season, where they must rely on their new acquaintance, Lady Hayward, as their chaperone and guide.
This is a drama packed and fast paced story of manipulation, blackmail, faith, and love which is centered around an unhappy and unfaithful wife. While the male characters are kind and compassionate, the female characters are smart and crafty.
2. A Selfish Heart
5 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance A Selfish Heart : Lady Anna and Marquess Elias Comerfield in the Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset by Rose Pearson and this review was given freely.
A story of shame, dislike, scruples and moving past the consequences brought about by the careless and self-serving antics of pleasure-seeking young gentleman and marriage-minded debutants during the London Season.
Angered and ashamed after an inebriated Lord Comerfield grabs her from behind, Lady Anna finds her feelings towards Lord Comerfield changing as he steadfastly helps her regain favor in society.
I enjoyed watching their relationship blossom and Lord Comerfield’s protectiveness strengthen.

3. A Love Unbroken
5 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance A Love Unbroken: Lady Selina and Lord Charles, the Earl of Barrington in the Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset by Rose Pearson and this review was given freely.
Another story depicting the seemlier side of English nobility. It makes me wonder if there are any uneventful matches as this family has one scandal/crime after another. Full of drama with a blackmail scheme and a sting operation, this attraction at first sight novel contains two romances with the hint of a third.
The shy and reserved Lady Selina and Lord Charles grow closer as they work together to protect his sister after a blackmailer places her in a compromising position.
4. A Christmas Match
4 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance A Christmas Match: Lady Charity and Lord Benedict. The Marquess of Hosmer in the Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset by Rose Pearson and this review was given freely.
I enjoyed the realistic characters, the drama and watching lady Charity and Lord Benedicts relationship unfold.
The Duke of Landon sends his fourth daughter Lady Charity to spend the Little Season of Winter in London in hopes of her finding a spouse. As she grows closer to the morose and embittered Lord Benedict, fortune hunters try to not only force them apart but also to trap them into marriages with someone else.
Contains the sad themes of depression and excessive alcohol consumption but ends happily.
5. A Most Suitable Bride
5 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance A Most Suitable Bride: Lady Maria and Lord Isaac the Earl of Ridlington in the Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset by Rose Pearson and this review was given freely.
Containing two romances, this clean instant attraction story features a couple who finds love despite preconceived ideas of what a perfect match would be.
Desperate and despondent after an unsuccessful year of London Seasons, the bluestocking scholarly Lady Maria, with the help of Lady Haywards’s daughter Sophia changes her image to appear more reserved and accomplished to provide the façade of a perfect debutant to attract a suitor. Lies, misconceptions, greed, and a father’s bias cause heart break and challenge Lady Maria and Lord Isaac’s fragile bond.
6. An Expectation of Love
4 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance An Expectation of Love: Lady Dorothea and Lord Oliver, Earl of Winford in the Landon House: A Regency Romance Boxset by Rose Pearson and this review was given freely.
A nice conclusion to the series. This instant attraction romance contains a fair amount of drama, depicts multiple forms of greed, self-entitlement, and subterfuge, includes Dorothea’s rocky quest for romance, and provides glimpses of romance between Mrs. Hayward and the Duke of Landon.
The carefree, self-entitled, and spoiled Dorothea is guided through her first season in London where she makes many false assumptions while growing closer to the ungainly but protective Earl of Winford.

I have read a lot of Rose's books, some of my favorites were the Convenient Arrangement Series, and The Spinster's Guild.
This new book is different in there is no real mystery as we are given all the characters upfront.
Lady Rebecca Landon, is the oldest daughter of the Duke of Landon. She has been responsible for her twin sisters, Anna and Selina. Their mother passed away when the girls were young. Her father the Duke of Landon provides for them but is a cold, distanced person. When they are to have their first season poor Rebecca fears she will be no more than a chaperone for sisters.
She meets Lady Hayward by tripping over her !! The older lady has three son's and no daughters.
She agrees to help the Duke with his daughter if he will help her sons who are having a hard time since her husband's death. The agreement is wonderful for Rebecca as she can now enjoy her first season and look for a husband. One that will meet what her father wants. She has never considered what she might want in a husband till Lady Hayward ask her.
Enters one Lord Jeffery Richmond, a very proper young man. He has returned to London from his estate as there is not much to do in the country now. He attends a ball by Lord and Lady Kensington. Lady Kensington is a very spoiled, young,
beautiful women who is married to a much older man. Their marriage is very mismatched. Lord Kensington is very into investments. Lady Kensington is very flirtatious and is attracted to Jeffery. When he turns her down, she has her husband ruin his reputation telling the ton he is a rake and flirted with his wife.
As Jeffery tries to repair the damage, he meets Rebecca at a bookstore. The attraction is quick on both sides.
As not to give too much of the story away, you will need to get the book to see how these two ends up.
A young new lady to the ton should not be seen or speak with someone on the outs with the ton.
Jeffery does everything he can to save Rebecca reputation but hasn't counted on her not being the normal young miss.
While Jeffery is being blackmailed by Lady Kensington none really know what she is up to till it is almost too late for all.
The story is nice sweet love story, great for a lazy afternoon., It is a very clean story and good for all ages.
I received and ARC from the author and would like to thank her, this is my honest option and am giving it voluntarily.

But in all reality it. Was the Lady with loose morals, trying to seduce the Lord Richmond. Lord Kensington walks down the hallway and catches the couple together and not really in a compromising position, Lord Richmond was trying to stand aside but the Lady Kensington was persistent.
Her husband tells the other gentleman to leave his home but damaged his reputation in doing so, but the naughty Lady Kensington is now under watchful eyes of her husband now. The lady forced Lord Richmond to help her even though he doesn’t wish to.

Fantastic story. I enjoyed reading this book.

Intriguing story. It was easy to identify with the main characters Lord Jeffrey Richmond and Lady Rebecca. Lord Jeffrey was kind and trusting. Always thought the best of people but he was too easy to dupe. A married woman was after him and he resisted her every time until she got him alone by lies. Her husband happens upon them and thinks the worse of Lord Jeffrey and the rumors started. No one in the ton would have nothing to do with him. However, he did have a few loyal friends who knew he was not guilty. Lady Rebecca is on her first season and has not emotionally connected with any gentlemen. However, when she meets Jeffrey at a bookstore, she feels it and knows he is not guilty of what he is accused of. In the meantime, the married woman starts to blackmail Jeffrey if he does not do her bidding, she will ruin not only Rebecca's reputation but of his closest friends and he knew she could do it. Somehow Rebecca never gave up on him. It finally got so desperate that Jeffrey's best friend Swinton, Rebecca and her chaperone got involved and solved such a shocking discovery as to what the married lady was up to. It was diabolical and would have sent Jeffrey to Newgate or be hung. This is a page turner. Full of suspense and emotion. A real nail biter. A very good read. I do recommend it.

Lady Rebecca lost her mother years ago.
It is now time to start the season. She is
with her father and two sisters trying to
find dresses plus other garments needed
for the season’s start.
Lady Rebecca meets Lady Hayward who
is a widow with sons only. Lady Hayward
decides to guide the three girls in dress
choice etc and chaperone them with the
Duke of Landon’s permission.
In exchange for her help, the Duke will
assist her sons on running an estate.
While browsing in a book store, Lady
Rebecca meets Jeffery Marquis of Richmond.
Lord Richmond has gotten the reputation
of being a “Rake” because of a married
lady’s misconstruing and blacking his image.
This married lady is even blackmailing Lord
Richmond for her own nefarious reasons.
Lord Richmond tells Lady Rebecca of his
innocence but he will need to prove it to
reclaim his innocence.
A cast of well fleshed, realistic, well defined,
interesting and relatable main characters.
The supporting characters were well written
adding to this intricately woven story.
I felt the author captured the attitudes and
social realities of the time.
I feel this story will delight and entertain the
reader while sharing the happenings.
I volunteered to read Mistaken for a Rake.
Thanks to the author via Booksprout for
the opportunity. My opinion is voluntary
and my own.

Lady Rebecca, eldest daughter of the Duke of Landon, accompanied her two sisters to London to launch them all into society. Lady Rebecca is finding it difficult to make sure her sisters have everything they need while trying to also find a suitable match for herself. But when she runs into Lady Hayward, she finds that she will be the chaperone for all three of them. The gentleman she is most drawn to is Lord Jeffery Richmond who was accused of making advances to a married woman, which gives him the reputation of a scoundrel and a rake. He denies it since he was actually the one who spurned HER advances. Lady Rebecca believes him, wanting to help him clear his name. Can they find a way to do that without Lady Rebecca ending up with a reputation of her own? What is the underlying reason for lying about Lord Jeffery’s behavior? And could there be a HEA for Lady Rebecca and Lord Jeffery if they can resolve his troubles?

I always love this author’s books! They are so well written, and the characters are always worthy of saving in some way. Grab your copy and see what the two of them can do to clear his name and allow him to find happiness. And perhaps they will stumble onto something more serious going on?

A wonderful story of a false rumor’s correction and true love wining

Rebecca, eldest daughter of the Duke of Landon with her two younger twin sisters is in London fir her First Season. Her mother has past and as her father, the Duke, is very busy he leaves the guidance of the twins to Rebecca until there is a chance meeting of Lady Hayward. Lady Haywood and the Duke come to an understanding that all three girls are now to be under her care and direction.
Lord Jeffery Richmond rejects the amorous advances of an unapplied married Lady Kensington. Through her efforts sand rumors in the “ton” he gains an unjustified reputation and faces potential ruin. He meets Lady Rebecca and is immediately smitten with her. Lady Rebecca doubts the rumors and she develops a liking for him.
The story continues with Jeffery handling additional demands from Lady Kensington because of her threats to ruin Jeffery’s friends and Lady Rebecca. Working together with Lady Hayward they discover a solution and the story ends with an HEA.
This is another superb tale from Ms. Pearson and it seems to be the first work in another series. I can’t wait. Don’t miss this book because you won’t be disappointed.\

This was okay. Truthfully more of a 2 1/2 stars than a three.

Rebecca is having her first Season and is taken with Jeffrey. Meanwhile, Jeffrey is unfairly accused of behaving badly, and is therefore unsuitable for Rebecca to be seen with.

I found Jeffrey to be a weak character. Not your typical masculine hero. In fact, he seemed rather naive and made silly decisions. He also repeatedly said he'd have to stay away from Rebecca for her sake, but made no attempt to actually do so. I found all the characters to be a little shallow.

This is a clean romance. I believe there is a single kiss that was over as soon as it started. Sadly, though, there was also no spark at all. I simply couldn't believe in any sort of connection between them. It's entirely possible to have a clean romance and still demonstrate an attraction, but this book does not. As far as I can see, they spend a handful of five minutes together here and there, and not alone, and barely speak of anything. It's hard to see how they could possibly have become as attached to each other as we're supposed to believe.

So, for a romance, it is somewhat lacking in... well, romance.

Overall, it's not a terrible read (I did complete it, after all), but I just didn't find it very exciting.

Since Lady Rebecca, eldest daughter of the Duke of Landon’s mother died, she has been taking care of her sisters. Now they are in London to launch Lady Rebecca and two of her sisters Anna and Selina, into society. She is feeling overwhelmed as this is their first trip and once again, she is in charge to seeing they have everything they need. While hurrying, Rebecca runs into another lady and is embarrassed apologizing profusely. The lady laughed and introduced herself putting Rebecca at ease. As it turns out Lady Hayward has volunteered to be a chaperone for all three girls, taking the pressure off of Rebecca. They fast become close and when Rebecca is caught talking to Lord Jeffery Richmond, Lady Hayward tells her not to associate with him. Seems he made advances to a married lady and is involved in a scandal. He told Rebecca it isn’t true, ended up explaining what happened, and she believes him. This story has scandal, threats, and something sinister that you will find close the end of the story as to why everything that is taking place has happened for an evil reason. Stop the rumours

Jeffrey is a compassionate fool! How is he a grown man? He has entangled himself with a evil witch with no end in sight! Rebecca is a Dukes daughter practical and used to being in charge of her younger sisters! Rebecca believes she will never find a suitor if she does it will be her father's specification not a thought to what she might want? Jeffrey ventures into a room where Lady Kensington throws herself at him for a quick roll in the hay! They are stumbled upon her husband and another Lord who is quick to spread the rumour that Jeffrey is a rake and rogue! Interesting enough because men are usually given a pass and its a ladies reputation that is shredded! Rebecca sees Jeffrey and knows he's not the things said about him and works to allow to visit and get to know her! Things are not as they seem and there is a more evil twisted plot afoot! Jeffrey is mindlessly obeying Lady Kensington and without Lady Haywood and Rebecca help the consequences could be deadly!!

...a woman scorned

Ms Pearson gives Regency romance a whole different spin in this book. Her strong feminine leads tend to be clear-headed at the most opportune of times, usually just when their counterparts need it the most. This book is a clean example, and it does not fail to entertain. When a bored wife sets her sights on Jeffrey Richmond, she is stunned when he refuses her advances. As she begins to weave a web about him, hoping to draw him in, he panics, and thus begins to lose his way under the guise of protecting Lady Rebecca, a beautiful young debutante in her first Season. Lord Richmond sees no way to escape the wiles of Lady Kensington, and feels helpless to do other than she demands. Only when he finally talks to his friends ddoes he finally begin to understand how to escape the treacherous woman who is bent toward his destruction in society.
Great book!!! Thanks for an excellently written goodread, Ms Pearson! Looking forward to the next in this series.

I love this book and look forward to the next book in the new series! Wonderful characters and plots! Rebecca and her twin sisters go to London for their first season looking for a gentleman of proper title and reputation to marry. Rebecca knew she must marry someone her father would approve of, but when she met Lord Richmond for the first time everything changed for her. Lord Richmond was a gentleman who always was respectable and never moved on the wrong side of the Ton, but Lady Kensington, even though married had set her desires on him. But when Lord Richmond denied her advances trouble started for him... I recommend that you read this book, you will find danger, manipulation, and of course love and an interesting solution to the problems of Lord Richmond. Great job Rose Pearson on an interesting start to a new series. Can't wait for the next book!

I enjoyed this romance story with Lady Rebecca and Lord Jeffery the Marquess of Richmond.

Lady Rebecca is a eldest daughter of the Duke of Landon. She is looking forward to making a match this season. Since she doesn't have to look after her two sisters because her father has asked Lady Hayward to help with bring them out this season.

Lord Jeffery the Marquess of Richmond has found himself in a situation this season with a married lady of the ton. And now has his reputation is ruined so he decides to stay and fight because he has been accused of something that he did not do.

This story was fun to read with it's little bit of a mystery to it.  This also has quite a bit of suspense and emotion to it. It was a nice clean romance that had a little bit of adventure too. This is the first in a series of books call "Landon House".

Predictable

Rose Pearson is a good writer, but I did not enjoy this book as much as I have her past works.

I not only didn't like the heroine's father, but her “hero” was a weak character. A marquess is second only to a duke. He is a powerful peer and certainly would not tolerate the actions or the threats as this character did in this book. Personally, I like both my hero and heroine to be strong and ready to stand up to any threat, real or imagined. Which is why this offering just didn't do it for me.

Thankfully the ending is happy, but getting to it was tedious.

Content 411: As with all of Rose Pearson's books, Mistaken for a Rake is very clean. There is no offensive content.

The ton is buzzing with rumours about Lord Richmond and his supposed reputation as a rake. Lady Rebecca is certain that he is innocent and wants to prove exactly that. After all, he is the only man whom she is attracted to, unfortunately…
The intrigue woven into the romance was captivating. The characters have strong values, fighting to prove that honour is still the compass after which they behave. The strength of character of the main protagonists is impressive, especially since Lady Rebecca was not used to the hypocrisy of the high society. I enjoyed the balance between romance and mystery as well as innocence / purity of character and deviousness. The different facets of this plot made it of great interest to read, and I highly recommend this book.

Lady Rebecca and her twin sisters are in London for the season. She feels a heavy responsibility to help them find a husband. But when she meets Lady Hayworth and discover father is willing to allow the lady to help, Rebecca realizes she has hope that she also will be able to find a husband. Once she meets Lord Richmond no one else will do. Unfortunately, Lady Kensington is determined to have him despite being married herself. She manages to get caught in a compromising position as she launches herself at Lord Richmond. Now with him labeled as a rake she thinks she has won and no one else will want him anywhere near their daughters or charges. Lady Rebecca is determined to prove his innocence so the drama unfolds!
I really liked this book. Rose Pearson is the Queen of the Regency romance. She is my favorite author in this subject. I highly recommend this book and this author!

Intended to ruin

Since their mother's death, the maternal responsibilities have fallen to the eldest daughter, Rebecca. Their father has just told she and her two closest sisters in age that Rebecca will be in charge of outfitting she and her sisters for the season. This is their first time in London. How can she possibly know what is in style this season or what colors to chose for each of them?
Jeffrey is seeking a wife but finds most of the debutante and a particular married lady bothersome. When he accidentally meets a miss in the bookstore, he is drawn to her. She is intelligent and as much a lover of books as he is.
A wonderful and down right scary book, when someone is out to ruin, or even worse, your name! You won't want to miss out on another of Rose's stories.
