There can be only one King of Space—and it’s the last liege standing! But as combat rages on, the clock ticks down to catastrophe! Will the ultimate interstellar weapon fry planet Earth before or after all sentient life on the planet is wiped out? The Avengers and the Fantastic Four are tested as never before—as EMPYRE comes to a pulse-pounding finish!

Most mega events get muddled and confused with trying to figure out which hero gets to save which part of the day, all the while losing sight of the story. This was set up by a pretty cool plot, and used so many heroes to get to the end, while never forgetting to focus on some personal struggles and make it feel real. They did a nice job bringing everyone together so it didn’t suffer the cross over syndrome of being too muddled to follow. That said, it was somewhat confusing due to not reading all the tie ins, but it was still fun. It’s not rocket science here.
My biggest compliant is that once again Hulkling isn’t used to the best of his ability. Instead, Black Panther gets the biggest role. Which, considering the real Black Panther actor passing, was pretty special. It was a little weird that he looked dead for a few pages there. But back to Hulkling and Wiccan... I think so much time was given to Tony Stark and his personal demons, that not enough was given to the emperor at the center of this. However, there were some good scenes of Reed and Tony talking it out.
The man in the iron mask aspect was cool, and the ending definitely might lead to some cool adventures for Marvel’s best couple.
The final piece to the puzzle. The event ends and everything is shifted...or is it.
I actually enjoyed this ending. Some would feel it's rushed but I disagree. I think it feels right and while not "world shattering" changes the things that will be effected will matter. ALso, Black Panther got to shine and after losing Boseman, I needed that. Miss him already, RIP to one of the greats.
Will do a full review of Empyre series once the final avengers/fantastic four issues come out! A 4 out of 5.
An interesting conclusion to the Empyre arc, though there's still a lot of fallout that needs to be cleaned up in individual stories (such as Captain Marvel's). I feel like this conclusion did justice to all of that buildup, while leaving room for even larger changes in the future.
Maybe I’m just not invested enough in the Marvel comics universe, but I found this series a little tedious. It went through all the expected motions of an event: hero “deaths,” heroes turned “villains,” surprise villains, way too many characters. It felt mechanical. Almost soulless.
Hulkling and Wiccan are definitely the most interesting characters here, and I was invested any time they were together. Their relationship is one of the best in comics, and it was great to see them get so much focus.
But the space politics, plot twists, and epic battles felt much less compelling. And almost every other character was either flat or just bland. The entire event feels forgettable, and without consequences.
It's really unfortunate that by nature the storyline had to be spread across so many comic 'lines' and at the same time, Marvel had to assume people wouldn't read them all. Because for everyone who did, at least half this comic is showing you a second time what they've already seen in the individual parts, and it takes more away from the core of this -- Hulkling regaining his position and power, the change of hearts, the people who didn't change it. And it was better within their own issues, too! I feel like this half-and-half approach sort of weakened both options, but I'm not sure what suggestion I'd have otherwise.
There's 5 aftermath issues to go but some general notes since this is technically the end: The strongest - the main Empyre line & the Captain Marvel issues. Strong, witty, and onpoint. I'll pick these up in physical edition on their own for sure. The mediocre -- FF and Avengers; the Fantastic Four stuff with the kids worked very well, but was a smaller story than the one they wanted to tell, and the Avengers storyline felt very paint-by-numbers predictable Captain America stuff. The bad - the X-men comics were genuinely quite badly written for this; the whole thing was weirdly uncomfortable (old ladies using pheromone spray on the boys) and relied on a plants vs zombies reference that was a year too late. Lords of Empyre wasn't great either; the Hulkling issue was enjoyable, but the others was just... information we got throughout the rest of the main comic anyway.

A solid ending to an excellent event, but endings are almost always a little unsatisfying.
It seems fitting that Black Panther got to shine in this, given the untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman. A strange twist of fate, given that this would have been written and drawn long before. But still, it made me smile.
Pretty much everything was tied up and resolved well, with perhaps the exception of the execution of Tony Stark's plan...as it wasn't made entirely clear if he actually did anything or if the Human Torch et al were the ones who stopped the Sun exploding. Or maybe I missed a page?
But overall this was great stuff, and while I'm only giving this issue 4 out of 5, the series gets a 5 out of 5 from me. Excellent writing, stunning art, what more could you ask for?
This was a good ending to the series--especially if you've kept up with the tie-ins. And the shift in power dynamics in space will make for some fun conflicts. All I know is that we need a Hulkling: King of Space series.
🤔 the event as a whole was great but I think the last issue had something missing. It didn’t really give me the shakeup I thought it would. No new change or status Quo, just a wrap up. While that’s fine it felt missing.
The conclusion to the this series is about like the rest of the series, namely not very memorable as super-hero epics go, but not bad at all. The action scenes are really well done, even if the conflict seems a little pointless. Maybe I've read one too many space operas from Marvel. Still, if you've read this far, go ahead and finish Empyre.
