One thing I learned this week: DO NOT flirt while at a client’s wedding. (especially with anyone in a tux)
Success-driven Hope Fletcher has some lofty goals for her life. But is it really too much to want a thriving cake design business by age 29? Marry a perfect (emphasis on the perfect) man by age 30? Then have the kids, dog, and house in suburbia by age 34? If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Dean. Wonderful, dreamy Dean who loves kids (and will eventually grow to love dogs) steps into Hope's world. He's the exact type of man she's been looking for and she starts falling. Hard.
But will Hope's perfect image of Dean crumble when she finds out about his past?
A clean, loud-out-loud romantic comedy that's full of sarcasm and swoons!
Summer Dowell is a romantic comedy author on the side of her main gig which is being mom to her six children. She is obsessed with reading and creating stories in her free time. Her most noted other skills include making a mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich and doing massive loads of laundry. Summer holds a bachelors degree in Business Marketing from Brigham Young University. She currently resides with her family in Southern California.
Am I the only one who reads a book, and wants to switch occupations to whatever the main character does? There have been books that make me want to be a librarian, graphic designer, teacher, among others. And this book makes me want to quit my job and become a cake decorator. But then I remember I don’t have the degree or talent to do any of those things, so I get up and go back to working at the law firm. Sigh.
Anyway, I loved reading about Hope! This is such a fun book! I found myself laughing and cheering her on, while hoping she would realize it’s ok to not be perfect. And I have this book to blame for my being tired at work for a couple days because I would make the mistake of picking it up when I should have been doing the adult thing and gong to bed. 😂 I didn’t want to stop reading it! Summer writes such good, fun, clean romantic comedies, and I can’t wait to read more of them!
DNF @ 26%. I just wasn't very impressed with this. I didn't really like the characters or the writing. It was around the time the main character called someone a "scoundrel" that it really lost me.
If It’s Perfect by Summer Dowell is a contemporary romantic comedy about Hope Fletcher, a perfection‑driven cake designer whose meticulously planned life gets delightfully upended when she meets Dean, the dreamy, kind‑hearted man she’s sure fits every box on her life checklist, forcing her to question whether perfect plans are worth sticking to when real, messy love comes along. Hope has set goals for her business, future family, dog, and home by specific ages, and meeting Dean at a wedding seems like everything she’s ever wanted, until a secret from his past nudges her to rethink what “perfect” really means.
When I opened If It’s Perfect I felt like I was biting into a slice of the most exquisite wedding cake, light and layered with laughter, charm, and heartfelt growth. Hope’s unwavering determination to control her life in hopes of creating something flawless made her so human and easy to love, especially as the narrative let me feel her anxiety, joy, and quirky humor in equal measure. Dean is woo‑worthy in that reassuring, respectful way that made me smile every time he showed genuine interest in who Hope truly was beyond her elaborate plans.
The setting among weddings and cake designs sprinkled each page with sweetness, and the gentle banter and chemistry between the leads made their journey feel comforting and vibrant. I particularly enjoyed watching Hope learn that life may not unfold in perfect increments, and that letting go of rigid expectations can lead to rewards far richer than any checklist. Overall, this is a light, funny, and heartfelt read that left me grinning and feeling warm inside.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I’m giving If It’s Perfect this rating because it is a genuinely funny romance with tender character development and clean chemistry that made me happy, even if some readers might wish for deeper conflict or complexity. It’s the kind of story that wraps you in warmth and encourages you to appreciate imperfections as part of life’s sweetest moments.
“An off-centered cake topper should be anyone’s worst nightmare.” - If It’s Perfect by Summer Dowell ————————————————— This cute cake-centered romance was my first real introduction into adult romance, and it was a sweet way to start! Rating: 3.5 ⭐️ If It’s Perfect tells the story of Hope, a cake decorator’s whose perfect life plan is interrupted when she meets Dean, a charming dentist ready to sweep her off her feet! Hope was a relatable character, and I enjoyed watching her grow as a person. She gets into some pretty interesting and sometimes hilarious situations! If It’s Perfect is a Hallmark-movie in book form, a sweet story with a feel-good cast of characters and a happy ending.
This is a sweet, lighthearted read. There's nothing "epic" about it, but if you're looking to just get lost in something easy then this is a good book for that. I enjoyed the wedding cake aspects about it and how the author kept the romance clean, but didn't care for the secret towards the end. It really didn't go anywhere or add to the story in any way.
This book wasn’t badly written. It was cute up to the point where Dean’s secret is revealed and at that point, I was disgusted and hated the book. There is a LOT of build up for this secret that he has and for not wanting to play a game of truth or dare with Haley. Haley overall is your standard heroine. She’s quirky, cute, and has baggage that she needs to overcome. Dean is your overgrown manchild with commitment issues but with a dark “secret”.
I was fine with it all, like I said, until the secret was revealed and the cavalier way in which Dean and Haley both deal with it left me feeling sick to my stomach.
Spoiler:
Anyway, if you are fine with the message that this book sends, you may like it, but I couldn't get past this and just how immoral it comes across.
This was a charming and quick contemporary romance. I’ve really enjoyed Summer Dowell’s books and this is no exception. I’m excited to get more romances from this cast because I adored Hope and Dean.
I saw a lot of growth with Hope. Learning to handle her need for perfection in a more realistic way really resonated with me. I thought she had a great dynamic and I absolutely love her cake decorator career.
Combine Hope with Dean and I thought they were just precious. It was kind of fun to have this “perfect” relationship happen for most of the book, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I actually burst out laughing (and in shock) when the reveal was announced. I like the way it was handled and that the drama didn’t drag out.
This was a delightful read that will put a smile on your face. Can’t wait to read more!
I grabbed this book because I was in a reading slump and the cover caught my interest. I didnt expect it to be this good. The story line seemed to perfect, nothing was going wrong. I was about to give up on the characters because they were too perfect and that's not normal lol. This book is a reminder that we all make mistakes and nothing is ever perfect. Everyone has a different opinion on what is perfect.
Thank you Summer Dowell for an early copy of this! Cake baker Hope has everything lined up for a perfect life. She plans on having a successful cake business by age 29, marry the perfect guy by age 30, and have kids, a house and a dog by age 34. That is, until she meets Dean at a wedding. He’s the perfect guy...or is he? Does everything have to be perfect in order for you to have a happy life? What a sweet, clean romance! Hope and Dean were a fun duo and I loved reading about their lives. This was filled with real life lessons, including forgiveness & love as well. The descriptiveness about the cakes Hope was creating had me drooling too! Overall, this was a sweet story & perfect for the current times. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was really disappointed in this book. I was expecting a sweet RomCom, but I was kind of bored with this story and I wasn't really invested in the characters.
Additionally, I didn't really find Hope's obsession with perfection charming - it was reflected in her cake business, her personal life, and her evaluation of Dean and his qualifications as the perfect husband. Every other page seemed to talk about perfection, and how perfect Hope thought Dean was. It was too much! Perfection shouldn't be the focus, the theme, the conflict, the pinnacle goal of every date with little focus on depth and vulnerability because Hope always avoided sharing her problems or concerns with Dean. It was just very shallow.
On top of that, it was very ironic and hypocritical for Hope to set a standard of perfectionism for Dean to measure up to, and yet she chaffed at the idea of not meeting the standard of perfectionism that seemed to be upheld by her sister in the eyes of her family and thinking no one could measure up to that. More so, it was clear that Hope had insecurity about her sister and the opinions of her parents because of the bitterness she clearly held. However, I don't believe it was addressed in the right way. The disappearance of her insecurity seemed to be contingent on her family's praise and the toppling of people's images in her mind (to the point, Hope seemed to rejoice in/was relieved to discover her sister's faults and struggles rather than celebrate her successes), not from her own recognition in her self-worth and self-assurance.
Plus, when I skimmed I didn't like how the story approached Dean's secret flippantly - it was an erroneous moral issue being dismissed, brushed off, and trivialized to mean nothing. The fact that this book excused Dean's actions in college as being young and dumb, let alone the fact that Hope dated a married man was excused and made to be a matter of perfection (how nobody's perfect) instead of the moral issue it was irked me. In my opinion, this issue wasn't dealt with soundly enough - a lot more emphasis was placed on depicting it as inconsequential and not a big deal than wrong and immoral just to get the happy ending. That's why, ultimately, this book got 1 star from me.
I've always had a dream of learning to decorate cakes, so I knew I'd like this book. Hope is a perfectionist, but as things start to fall apart, she has to take a good look at her plan and decide if following through is really going to make her happy. I love how she learns to trust, forgive, and find joy in her journey.
This was my first Summer Dowell novel and I’m a big fan! This was adorable, humorous, and sweetly entertaining from start to finish! I loved the characters and the plot was interesting enough to capture my attention, but not overly complicated. The characters got to really shine in this book and I really enjoyed that. I loved the balance of humor and romance. This book was funny I’m a natural way and I totally loved that! I’m so picky about Rom-Com reads because they are usually too silly or the humor is almost assaulting, however this author really has a knack for expertly balancing these things to make a fun and romantic story!!! I will definitely be coming back for more from this author! Love!
4.25* This book was so great!!! I can’t say that I’ve read many books with twins, but the two mix up scenes in this had me cracking up, and also that one time Hope pulled a CIA agent mission was a lot of fun.
On one hand we have Hope, an overthinker, who struggles to ask for help because she likes being in control. Someone who wants everything in her life to be perfect and go according to her plan. On the other hand we have Dean, literally the nicest guy you could ever meet, a true picture perfect dream boyfriend, but like the rest of us, he has a past where he made choices he now regrets.
Life isn’t perfect and doesn’t always go according to plan, no matter how hard we work on it. And there are no perfect trophy people. Everyone has flaws, and that’s what makes us human. Hope’s character development was wholesome. She started working on herself more and learned to accept others for who they were and not for who she wanted them to be. I was also glad that she got to fix her relationship with Grace and, in the process, learn that we don’t always know what happens behind closed doors, and that sometimes people pretend to live a perfect life when, in reality, it’s far from it.
Other things worth mentioning: - Couples !!! Game !!! Night !!! (even though they were just two) And Triple !!! Dinner !!! Dates !!! (even though it didn’t end that well) PLEASE !!!! SO GOOD!!! - Haley and Lexi were both supportive friends, and had Hope’s back no matter what, but still called her out on her bullshit. They both radiated chaotic energy, and I loved them. - The fact that Dean would rather procrastinate for 10 years instead of getting the result of a dare annulled right away seemed too farfetched, but everything worked out in the end. - I wish the epilogue would have been a little longer! I turned the page, expecting to still have two more left and went “oh nnnoooooo!!!”
If you're looking for something as light and fun as buttercream frosting, this is the book for you! Hope is a perfectionist, with rigid goals and looking for the perfect man. The meet cute with Dean was humorous and sweet, and what follows was a deliciously delightful concoction of pure RomCom fun.
This author has a wonderful sense of humor that flows right through to the characters and the entertaining situations they found themselves in. As Hope is a cake decorator, wedded bliss and all its trappings (bridezillas and all) decorated the pages like fondant flowers. Not only did this story leave me drooling for cake, but I was also in love with the budding romance and was ready to fight Hope for perfectly imperfect Dean.
In a true RomCom fashion, this book delivered snark, witty banter that sizzled, drama, secrets, humor, romance, and more, and I devoured it about as fast as I would a five tiered, multi-flavored wedding cake. This one was a winner in my book!
This was quite the sweet read (both literally and figuratively). I found myself laughing throughout and it just felt so good. I would definitely recommend reading this book with some cake as a snack because it makes you hungry. :) It was really nice that there was an emphasis on family in this story. It really kept me reading and I loved seeing all the teasing interactions. Right away, something seemed really off and it bugged me a lot. I kept on overanalyzing everything, trying to figure out what it was. Eventually, I figured out what it was -- Dean was too perfect and I was just expecting skeletons to pop out of the closet. Overall, I was not disappointed by this one and I look forward to seeing what Summer publishes next.
I'm trying to read as many romance novels as possible in February, and I am happy to say that this clean, cheesy story was right up my alley!
The main character of this book, Hope, is a type-A control freak (I can relate) who has trouble straying from her life plan. That plan includes not finding a romantic partner for at least two more years while she continues to find success in her wedding cake business. So basically, the story begins with a great premise!
Overall, this book was a super-fast read that fit all the romantic comedy boxes. So if that is what you're looking for, go for it!
Book Review If It’s Perfect | Summer Dowell ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If It’s Perfect was such an easy, light hearted book! I found myself laughing out loud from the beginning and cheering Hope on as she works through life happening before she’s ready. I loved Dean’s swagger and Hope’s quirky perfectionist tendencies, which she has to learn how to overcome to succeed and be happy. This clean romance is out NOW and will have you laughing out loud and craving wedding cake like nobody’s business (I’ll be stopping by the bakery today!) Thank you @summerspen for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
This light and breezy book is just the ticket to lighten my reading. I recently read a book that was wonderful but heavy. If It's Perfect is the perfect read for more than a few laughs. Hope demands perfection in every aspect of her life. She has a plan and she's a couple years off from meeting Mr. Right. When she unknowingly has a meet-cute with the groom at a wedding she delivers a cake to, Hope decides the bride needs to know her new husband is a two-timing jerk. Dean and Hope crack me up. There were several moments - including a cactus and a chihuahua - that had me laugh out loud. Hope's journey to learning sometimes perfection can be found in the imperfect is sweet and amusing. Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
This book was as sweet as the cakes the heroine makes and I absolutely loved it! The wit and humor were well-timed and had me grinning throughout and even laughing out loud at times. The romance was light and charming and I loved Hope and Dean together. Hope was definitely a perfectionist but the author wrote it in an endearing way and I could relate to some of her control issues. I enjoyed seeing her learn to let go a bit and realize that no one, not even herself, could live up to her perfect standard. Dean was great and I loved how much of a gentleman he was and how he was such a great blend of sweet and funny! I also really liked the wedding cake aspect of the story, took me back to my bakery days (though I didn’t make them, just sold them) and it was a fun setting for everything! All in all an utterly cute read that I highly recommend if you are looking for a light read to put a smile on your face! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I always love Summer's books, and this one was another winner! Her romcoms are just the perfect, feel-good stories. I can never put them down--they make me laugh and make me happy and they are just great.
Right away I loved Hope. She was relatable with her slight awkwardness, occasional self-deprecating feelings, and her desire to control life around her. Dean was her perfect counterpart, and their banter was amazing. I loved the side plot with her sister, and the ending gave me all the feels!
While I saw the truth behind the initial mixup right away, I never could have guessed the incident in the climax! It was unique and I loved it!
Now excuse me while I wait for Summer's next book!

Oh my goodness, this book was so cute!! I felt like this story was written for me. I honestly just loved every part of it. There were several moments in this book I was laughing out loud. I also loved all the lessons in this book. There were lessons on love, forgiveness, and how we view others. I found the characters to be very likable and relatable. I also loved the descriptions of the cakes Hope made. This was a really cute, clean romance, and I would highly recommend it!

Synopsis: One thing I learned this week: DO NOT flirt while at a client’s wedding.
A clean, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy that's full of sarcasm and swoons!
If it’s Perfect is a contemporary romcom that is quickly making its way up my favorites list! There are so many things I loved about this book. Summer’s writing is so distinct that I honestly feel like I can hear her narrating it to me- If you follow her on social media you know this makes the book even more entertaining and awesome! I loved the characters, this storyline is my favorite of hers so far, and I loved that this is a book that anyone could enjoy! Overall, my favorite thing about the book was the theme. Hope and I share a lot of the same characteristics: we both plan our life out by the years, we are perfectionists and sometimes we are the last to know what it is we really want. Summer does a great job teaching important life lessons for us perfectionists in a fun and entertaining way.
All of the stars for this book! I loved it!
I was given an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest
Summer is good at writing cute, Hallmark-worthy romance stories. This is a quick read; took me less than an afternoon (and I don’t consider myself a speed reader), but still very cute. Hope is a perfection-driven cake decorator and designer, who owns her business, mostly making and designing wedding cakes. She has the perfect life plan, which most definitely includes a lot of success in her business (which she manages to run entirely by herself, thank you very much) and most definitely *doesn’t* include any romance with the perfect man for *at least* another year. So when a man who is perfect by all accounts suddenly shows up in her life, what will she do? And is he really as perfect as everything appears to be? The story is cute. The romance is cute (and very clean). It’s written pretty well. It’s funny and lighthearted. If you are looking for a light, fluffy romance, definitely look into this book. You will not be sorry!
Hope went through a lot of learning throughout this book. It was funny to watch the protagonist make so many mistakes. She’s definitely a bit klutzy! I kept waiting for her to drop one of her cakes during a transport—I actually had a little bit of anxiety every time a cake transfer was part of the story! Thankfully Hope comes through every time on those. Whew! She has a lot of funny quirks and is a fun protagonist.
I really did like Dean. He seemed a little flirty and so I was a little hesitant about him, but he was also so respectful and kind to Hope that eventually I couldn’t help but like him. Especially with the twist toward the end, I thought he was pretty mature to handle everything as he did (even if it had ultimately been his own fault).
Note: kissing, very mild. No language. Super clean romance.
