Eibhlin wants one thing more than anything else in the world: a portion of the love and time her father shares with everyone but her.

Since the passing of her mother, Eibhlin has stood by or helped as her father serves their small village in any way he can. Over and over, she receives the praises of all who know her. Even her father speaks kindly to her face. But then he makes promises he has no mind to keep, and does everything in his power to drink away their funds and time in the tavern instead of coming home to be with the daughter who reminds him of his dead wife.

Angered by one broken promise too many, Eibhlin sells a magical item of invaluable worth--her mother's hammer--to a fairy who promises her eternal wealth in return. But in seeing the devastation on her father's face and the breaking of his already shattered heart, his neglected daughter does the only thing she can to make things right.

She journeys off into lands of magic, darkness, light, and home again, all in desperate attempts to regain what she should never have sold and return it to mend her relationship with her father.

Fairy Door is a powerful, emotional tale about a young woman learning what truly matters in life, even if she may not receive reciprocated affection in return. Her trials through perilous adventures (accompanied only by an enchanted instrument who records time itself) lead her to discover who she is, WHY she is, and what such a small girl can do to truly change her world with enough work and faith.

The world V.A. Boston created in Fairy Door is rich and believable. There were a few aspects of the plot that confused me in places or that were a bit slow from time to time, which is the only reason this is not a five-star read.

As a story that can be read as a stand-alone fiction, it was a well-developed tale that made me wish there was more to read in this vast world. While there is nothing wrong with fairy romances, I also found it very refreshing that it is a fairy story more in tune with the older Grimm's theming than a romance, as well, especially seeing as this is a YA.

I'm a sucker for portal fantasy. The blurb about the book mentioned a quest, a talking instrument, and magical doors. All of those things are like lodestones to me as a reader. There is something about the ability to walk through a door and wind up in a different place that holds a special appeal to me. This story didn't disappoint, I enjoyed all of those elements.
I would have rated this book highly if it only had those things and did them well. But this story added a human element of dealing with shame, regret, and consequences for your actions that I wasn't expecting. Mild spoiler: This story wound up reminding me of the parable of the Prodigal Son in the Bible. I loved the choices the author made in the end and I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a quick, heartwarming read.
