While Addison Lake and her family enjoy an Easter break at the carnival, knife-thrower Frankie Hammond is stabbed in the back with one of his own knives. Detective Wilcox is understaffed and down with the flu, so Addison steps up to help investigate.
Magicians, staff, and the owners of the carnival are all on the suspect list. Even the clowns have a motive for wanting Frankie dead.
Hanley Brothers’ Carnival is a family affair. But as Addison and Wilcox follow the clues, they find this family has a lot to hide.
The show must go on – but at what cost?
The Getaway Bay cozy mysteries have everything you love – suspense to keep you guessing, twists you don’t see coming, and characters you want to have a cup of tea with – plus an added dose of Aussie flavour.
Another lighthearted read in the Getaway Bay Cozy series. In this instalment the carnival is in town, and Addison and her family are taking in the atmosphere and fun of the event when the inevitable happens and someone ends up dead. The local police are stretched thin, so luckily Addison is there to lend a hand. Our amateur sleuth is so0n hard at work interviewing suspects and chasing leads, yet she still has tme to bake some delicious sounding treats!
This book, like the rest of the series, is a lot of fun and a great way to spend a few hours. I'm looking forward to reading the next one now. Recommended for all lovers of cozy mysteries.
Another fun cosy mystery set in Getaway Bay, although perhaps not for the knife thrower who ends up stabbed at the carnival.
Addison is settling into her new home in Getaway Bay and has her son Justin and daughter Olivia visiting for Easter. The carnival is in town so they are all enjoying the fun, only later to discover there has been a murder. The victim, Frankie, the knife thrower, was not a popular man so there is a long list of suspects. Addison has managed to talk the local Detective Isaac Wilcox to signing her on as a police volunteer, so she is in her element, able to use her skills in snooping and picking up gossip to help Isaac.
I love all the characters in this engaging cosy mystery series - just perfect for a quick, fun read.
Book three in this pleasurable little series and this time Addison finds the dead body at the carnival shortly after she has survived the awful fate of being stuck at the top of the Ferris Wheel. Neither event being top of her list for having a fun day at the fair!
The author writes entertainingly about clowns, acrobats, fairy floss, sideshows and other appropriate items and activities. Addison manages to get herself enrolled as a kind of voluntary police person and involves herself thoroughly in solving the case.
She also cooks a lot and everyone eats an awfully large amount of baked goods - by rights they should all be enormous. I thought #4 should be called Death by Diet but I see it is actually Death at the Dog Show which sounds great and I can't wait to read it!
Addison Lake was at the Easter carnival with her daughter, Olivia, son Jason and his fiancé Emily when a scream ripped through the air. It had come from the direction of the staff’s quarters – Frankie, the knife thrower, had been stabbed with one of his own knives. Detective Wilcox was quickly on the scene with his two offsiders, but the suspect list was huge. Addison decided she needed to help – after all, her investigative skills had brought a conclusion to the previous murder which had occurred in Getaway Bay.
There weren’t many in the Hanley Brothers’ Carnival, both owners and staff, who had liked Frankie – elimination of suspects would take a while. Would Addison and Detective Wilcox find the culprit who had ended Frankie’s life? There were secrets coming to light that maybe someone would kill to keep…
The Corpse at the Carnival is the 3rd in the Getaway Bay Cozy Mystery series by Aussie author Grace York (aka Catherine Lee) and I loved it just as much as the first two. Light and easy to read, it’s nevertheless fast paced and packed with twists which kept me turning the pages. With characters that feel like friends, it’s a series to keep the reader entertained. And #4 - Death at the Dog Show - is due out soon! Highly recommended.
This is book 4 in the Getaway Bay series and another Queensland located cosy-mystery. In this instalment a carnival has come to Getaway Bay. Addison and her family are enjoying the rides when a worker from the carnival is found dead in his trailer. Addison of course cannot help but be involved and is soon trying to figure out who had the most motive to want this person dead. Looking forward to book 4 in this light, easy-read series.
The Corpse at the Carnival is book three in the Getaway Bay Cozy Mystery series by Grace York. Addison Lake family was in town, and they all went to the Carnival. During the time Addison and her family were at the carnival, someone dies. Addison started to investigate the death of Frankie Hammond due to Detective Wilcox's illness, and the police station was understaffed. The readers of The Corpse at the Carnival will continue to follow Addison's investigation to find out what happened to Frankie.
The Corpse at the Carnival is another fantastic addition to this excellent series. As always, I engaged with the plot of this book from the first page. I love the way; Grace York portrays her characters and their interaction with each other throughout this book. The Corpse at the Carnival was well written and researched by Grace York. I like the description of the settings of The Corpse at the Carnival that allows me to picture myself living in Getaway Bay.
The readers of The Corpse at the Carnival will learn about running a dog show. Also, the readers of The Corpse at the Carnival will learn what the role of police volunteer.
This book can be read as a stand-alone. There are mentions of previous murders in the area, but they don’t have any true effect on the current case.
The Ferris wheel. Nemeses to many acrophobians. Of course, the opening sequence of this murder mystery takes place on such a death-defying contraption. Addison counts things. I close my eyes and count the seconds of life I have remaining.
The most reviled man in the company is murdered. Initially, everyone is a suspect. Nobody will miss him. Is an investigation truly necessary? The world is now a better place. Let it go at that. But no, how else are we going to learn all the skeletons hiding in everyone’s lockers? There are some doozies, with the largest not even being a secret at all!
Oh, how I would love to submit my application to board at Addison’s beach house. Even if it’s just for a month or two. The surrounding area sounds peaceful and idyllic (minus the murders, of course). Even the town’s name, Getaway Bay, sounds like a perfect place to relax. I’m not a social person, but the weekly Friday evening ritual sounds inviting.
A good read but not my favourite. Actually I found it rather sad. However the plot held everything you could wish for - love, murder, great sleuthing and a devious manipulator. Great to have Adam stay on as a more permanent fixture but what about pairing him off with someone. I also enjoy the slow pace of the romance between our main chandelier the detective. When the fair comes to town, so does her daughter and son plus her son's fiance. But a ride on the big wheel has her slightly panicked when the ride breaks down and their car is near the top. A while later when they get off another crisis. The death of the knife thrower. Stabbed in the back as he lay sleeping. Add in affairs, blackmail, manipulations, a dysfunctional family and a suicide attempt plus she is made a police volunteer. Can they find out who, how and why and maybe stop more bloodshed?
Nothing like being on a Ferris wheel, at the top when it stops. Playing the game of I Spy while waiting with her grown children. When they get down, screams, come from the staff trailers. The knife.thrower had been murdered.. Addison, had looked around when she was at the top did she see anything. She offers to help the investigation. People come from all over to attend this family owned circus. The more they dig, they find a lot of secrets, in this family. Enjoyable, I liked the characters, and the way the plot unfolded.
Maybe it's because I've been away from this series for quite some time, but this book didn't capture my attention the way I'd hoped it would. I like the characters and love the setting, but something about it didn't quite ring true.
However, this is a Y author, so I'll look for the next book in the series and hope that maybe my issues were just with this particular book.
This was a fun cozy mystery to read. It had a good plot and well developed characters. I look forward to reading more Getaway Bay mysteries. I highly recommend it to other cozy mystery readers.
I enjoyed the book, although the story line was not unique. There were some interesting and quirky moments that made it a good read. The killer was a bit of a surprise. Enjoy.
