The King James Bible: The Old Testament

Rate this book
The Old Testament consists of many distinct books by various authors produced over a period of centuries. Christians traditionally divide the Old Testament into four The first five books of the Jewish Bible; Books telling the history of the Israelites, from their conquest of Canaan to their defeat and exile in Babylon; The “Wisdom books” dealing with questions of good and evil in the world; and the books of the biblical prophets, warning of the consequences of turning away from God. The King James Bible is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England, completed in 1611 under the sponsorship of James VI. Noted for its “majesty of style”, the King James Bible has been described as one of the most important books in English culture and a driving force in the shaping of the English-speaking world. With the development of stereotype printing at the beginning of the 19th century, the King James Bible became the most widely printed book in history. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

I've always considered this essential reading -- though a monumental task (at least for me, as I'm a slow reader). I read this book cover to cover in 2018, a little every day. I had read many of it's books and sections all my life, but never completely straight through. While parts are super dry, and some books are repeated accounts of histories, this is a powerful book. As a Christian, I value these accounts of God's dealings, his promises and miraculous doings among men, especially the House of Israel. It's also vital to know the words of ancient prophets in order to appreciate The New Testament. This became the cornerstone of western culture, and the source of much great literature, art, etc. But its real value comes from its promises, prophecies and hope in the Messiah, not just long ago, but now and in days to come.
