Jeff Case #2

Primed to Kill

Rate this book
Award-Winning Author and Series

Vigilante Hero and Team, Serial Killers, Murder, a Psychic, and a Dog.

Green Beret and a two-war veteran, Jeff Case has suffered a tremendous tragedy. He got justice and bought a ranch to move outside of Houston and for a change. He hardly has time to recover when he is pulled into helping a friend. When Case’s psychic friend, a child, and a cop are all threatened by a serial killer, it pulls him and his team into a deadly hunt.

What started as a hunt for one serial killer gets complicated. Case got more than he expected and his search exposes serial killers in Houston, Boston, and Miami. Case can’t let them go on killing and he doesn’t.

This stretches Case and his team as they race in three cities at once to bring these serial killers to justice and prevent innocents from being murdered.

Plus, Case is still searching for the author of the Kill Crime (fictional bestselling book in a book promoting vigilantism), which may hold the key to how his parents died when he was a child.
The story moves fast and you’ll hardly have time to take a breath.

Primed to Kill, Kill Crime 2 (Crime/Thriller/Vigilante/Mystery/Suspense)
From the author, Mike Slavin:
(Can preorder now on Amazon, to be released in Oct, Dec at latest 2020)

Vigilante Hero and Team, Serial Killers, Murder, a Psychic, and a Dog.

I wrote the rough draft of Primed to Kill, sitting in a recliner in a rental house after my house was flooded by Hurricane Harvey (2017) and we waited for the repairs. Then the editing began. For me it is not a simple process, I get a developmental edit, line edits, and beta reads, over and over. Then my story gets better and better. I try very hard to write a complex story that is easy to follow.

I am the author, but Goodreads allows me to review my own book.

Synopsis:
Former Green Beret and a two-war veteran, Jeff Case has suffered a tremendous tragedy.
From here down is the same thing I said for Kill Crime if you read my review there:

What you as a reader get:

Action: I always defaulted to action.

Emotions: I try to make you laugh in some places and I try to make you cry in others. I want you to feel the story. I did.

Surprises and Twists: I want to surprise the reader as much as I can. It’s fun.

Realism: I tried very hard to make the story as real as possible. I interviewed cops, military people who served in combat, used car salesmen, private investigators, and anyone who could add realism to my story. I even made sure I had some female editors to make sure I represented the female voice accurately.

This book is the best I could do. No editorial mistakes (I hope). As cleanly written as I could with multiple edits and proofs.

I held nothing back.

Also, there is a FREE short story prequel, Life-Changing Money, to the Kill Crime/Jeff Case series at www.mikeslavinauthor.com. Please leave me a review on Goodreads and Amazon if you read it and like it.

Primed to Kill, Kill Crime II is available now on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...
Jeff Case tries to survive and save others as he runs into a pack of serial killers. Kill Crime III is out in the series and a breakout character is out too, Spike, 35 Kills and Smiling (think Dexter meets Reacher).

Thank you,
Have a great day,

‘The answer is no. I’m not running around killing bad guys’ - …yet…

Texas author Mike Slavin’s biographical information could well be the foundation for a novel! A West Point graduate (and a Troy State University graduate in Management), US Army veteran, self-made businessman who started his own company (Oil & Gas Exploration Company) and became a millionaire, author (as Michael L.F. Slavin) of how-to books on becoming a millionaire, and now caring for his Parkinson’s challenged wife while writing crime thrillers – just start reading this Jeff Case opening of a series and there we are! Mike lives in Houston.

Cinematic momentum initiates this second Jeff Case novel, with much of the character’s presence suggested in the opening: ‘Jeff Case stared intently into Trish’s eyes. He sat in one of the chairs in front of her desk with steepled hands and lips pursed, but he didn’t say anything. Without trying, he had gotten into a stare down contest. It looked like she was going to wait for an answer. “What’s your question again?” Case asked. “You heard me. Are you doing anything about ‘Kill Crime?’” she asked. “ Killing bad guys to make the world a better place? Not sure I’m really ready for that. I had a reason for what I’ve done, but I’m finished with that stuff.” Leaning forward, he gave her a serious, ruffled brow look, still with a frozen stare. “Why do you care?” he asked, using a silly accent and a high-pitched voice to lighten the mood as he lifted one eyebrow.’

Mike swirls into this new volume with a flurry, condensing the plot as follows ‘Green Beret and a two-war veteran, Jeff Case has suffered tremendous tragedy. Plus, Case is still searching for the author of the Kill Crime (fictional bestselling book in a book promoting vigilantism), which may hold the key to how his parents died when he was a child.’

Once started, Mike’s well-written novel has you captured. Mike Slavin joins the ranks with the very best crime/thriller novelists of the day. Very highly recommended

After "Kill Crime," I have been curious and anticipating Mike Slavin's sequel, "Primed to Kill." It's another fast paced thriller that examines the fine edge between justice and vigilantism. With plenty of genuinely bad guys, crime scenes and dead bodies, and a motley crew of sometimes questionably good "guys" (and one good "gal"), the book keeps you guessing what comes next. Throw in a little unexpected mysticism and it all becomes even more curious.

What started off as an interesting series has devolved into a seriously unbelievable tale of a rich man turned vigilante who enlists the aid of colleagues and police detectives to hunt down and kill serial killers and other associated bad guys. Makes my brain hurt.

I echo other reviewers who note how quickly Mike Slavin is improving as a story-teller. Slavin’s protagonist – Jeff Case- is a West Point graduate, combat vet, Special Forces officer, who has left military service to serve in the oil business (where the author himself works). After “relaxing” for a year after the incredible conclusion of Kill Crime, Jess Case faces off with a new covey of “bad guys” worthy of his righteous wrath. Case ends up fighting an entire “team” of sociopaths who have essentially made a first-person-shooter video game into real-live human hunting and murdering innocent victims for the sheer thrill of the kill. Case is pulled between his personal ideology to protect his friends by pursuing the “bad guys” personally versus leaving the law enforcement to the police. Fortunately for Case, Slavin’s “bad guy” Spike is truly an evil sociopath, an organized and charming serial killer, and it doesn’t take much of a push to get Case in vigilante-mode to take him down. The book grabs the reader from the first chapter, and moves very vast from hard-hitting action scene to another, with of course Case usually dishing out more than he takes, but he takes his fair share of hits/pain. Don’t start this book if you have family or job commitments that will be adversely affected by reading straight through the night. Case isn’t without his own flaws, but fortunately his righteous and virtuous wrath Is more than enough to push him across the finish line. A great morality play – the “good guy” wins over the bad guys. Congrats, Slavin. I agree with other readers who compare Slavin with Michael Connelly, Robert Crais and Lee Child. For me, I would also recommend Mike Slavin to those readers who like some of my favorites action-thriller authors like Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, Tim Tigner, and Jason Kasper.

Jeff Case lost his wife and son a year ago and sought his own justice for their murderer when traditional law enforcement was unable to do so. He’s working through his grief, tentatively considering more than friendship with private investigator, Trish, and ready to move to his recently finished ranch outside Houston. When his elderly friend, Summer, witnesses the attempted murder of a cop in the park where another woman’s been murdered, Case is pulled into the hunt for a serial killer that soon becomes the hunt for multiple killers.

As the hero, Case, is pitted against charismatic killer Spike, I was impressed with Slavin’s handling of each character, as well as that of secondary characters. You see the danger Spike poses and really fear he’ll continue his crimes without being caught. Case and his team make mistakes that lead to cringe-worthy consequences, though there’s still hope that good will triumph over evil. Questions of whether vigilante justice is justified in certain situations add a depth to the story and characters I appreciated. The plot is suspenseful and engaging, a page-turner for sure, that kept me up reading far too late. I hadn’t read the first in the Kill Crime series but wasn’t lost with this story at all. Highly recommended!

Slavin has carefully used the first-person narrative to put you directly at the scene.
You immediately feel you are part of the novel. When The character is running and sweating and feeling tired and out of breath: The reader stops and takes a deep breath.
Kudos to a very well written book.
We are talking about a serial murder here. The murderer is not killing people because he wants to steal their money or jealousy or revenge.
This murderer is nothing but evil.
You will meet a character in the book which sells this point of evil quite well.
You will also learn some valuable tricks that you will use in your life.
For instants, what if someone visiting your neighbor parks in your driveway and blocks you.
Take a sliver of porcelain from a broken spark plug and throw it at the passenger window of their car. The window will silently shatter into 1000 pieces. Then you can walk inside your home and try to wipe the smile off your face.
Learn what a leather sap is and how important it is that you have one.
I don't know where Slavin's strength lies; is it the character or the plot. Either way, the reader will enjoy it. And then they can decide the character or is it the plot.

What a great read. I really enjoyed the first book and this one was even better. I was not expecting the direction this book went and caught myself getting wrapped up in the story very quickly. I finished the majority of the book in one day because it kept me wanting to know what happened next. I was not expecting the ending and how certain decisions will influence future tales. It was a fun getaway from reality during these troubled times. I was not sure I was going to like the way the chronology was going on but it made it feel more like reality and kept me even more enwrapped in the story! Great job Mike Slavin, and I look forward to the next book and the future adventures of Jeff Case!

Just Wow! I loved this book so much that I couldn’t put it down!! This is one of those reads that completely drags you in from the very start, it makes you get attached to the characters (even the evil ones, yes!) and makes you sit on the edge of your seat, waiting for the next unpredictable twist!!
Dynamic, full of action, accurate in all situations, emotional and delicate at times, very well structured, masterfully written and with an excellent cast of characters.
Jeff Case and Trish (but also a lot of others) “stayed” with me for days, incredible how you can get attached to fictional characters, kudos to the author.
What to say, I absolutely plan to stick with this series and so should you. A must-read for sure!!

Author, Mike Slavin delivers again with “Primed to Kill, Kill Crime II” as characters Jeff Case and Trish gather you in and hook you in the first ten pages! That is my kind of book! Let Slavin grab you by the arm and lead you through this crime thriller with thought provoking and spine-chilling detail that is second to none. The follow up to Kill Crime is even better than the first. Filled with tension, intrigue, and thrills around every corner, the story follows Jeff Case as he is tangled up with a serial killer and employs his particular skills, with the help of his friends, to try to stop the bloody trail the killer is carving through Houston.
With action that is packed in every chapter and a deep POV into the killer, this book is a hook at every turn. I loved it. It spooked me, got my heart pumping, and kept me fully immersed to the very last page. I am so looking forward to the next book!

I was skeptical about this book; I started reading it on my Kindle, but I read so slowly (partly due to my poor vision) that I couldn't follow the story. I switched to text to speech, and as I was able to follow the story, I realized that had great potential, and in fact I enjoyed it. The author was able to take a revolting idea and make it into a reasonable story and a reasonable sounding solution to particular heinous crimes and situations. The whole thing still makes me feel a little bit dirty, so I can revel in the fact that I personally am not involved!

I'm hooked on Case, and Slavin too!!!

Let me be one of the first to acknowledge Mike Slavin as the up and coming author who overtakes the likes of James Patterson!!! No offense to Patterson, but Slavin's "Kill Crime" series are addicting! I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment
The characters and plot development are engaging and authentic to the point where one wonders if these stories might actually be true...
Must read!

So glad I had a rainy Sunday afternoon to read this book cover to cover. Being a fan of Mike Slavin's books and having read the Kill Crime series, I enjoyed returning to Jeff Case's world. I realized quickly how much I missed it and how much I missed Mike Slavin's writing style. Looking forward for more!

Wanted to like this book.
Unfortunately the ridiculous characters make it hard too.
The actual stupidity of the people the plot and the loyalty make it a hard book to get through.
The only character I liked was the dog. Although the others all seemed to have the same loyalty factor.
Won’t be buying any others in the series.

Another riveting Jeff Case adventure! At times, I was almost yelling at my computer the way sports fans yell at their teams. Twists and turns, both unexpected and some where you say to these characters, "Oh come on! You should have seen that coming!" Really excellent character development, even when the character is someone you never want to meet (shudder). It was impossible to walk away from it so I had a very rare day off from my usual 7 day work week.

Can't wait for the next one! When are the movies coming out?

Great, but…

The book was excellent and very scary. The serial killer was terrifying. I liked the retribution in the book, but I wasn’t happy with the ending. He’s still alive and living well.
