A Bit Preachy

I don't like children's books that feel preachy, and this one does. The story depicts the penguin as he is now—very good at doing his chores and cleaning up—and then goes back to show how he learned to be efficient and productive. The book would have worked better if the author first showed Penguin and his less-than-stellar ways and followed that with the section about the fox teaching him what to do. Then, it could have moved on to what he is like today. I also don't buy that Penguin is always perfect with his habits today, and I don't think kids would believe it, either. Introducing the idea of the 2-minute rule is good, I think, but the story certainly needed work to make it less preachy and acceptable for children. Kids don’t like to be talked down to, and they appreciate a story that shows rather than tells One quibble is the depiction of the pocket watch. The author talks in several places about the penguin counting seconds, but the pocket watch has no second hand. I think it would have been great to depict, perhaps even with curved lines showing motion. I think the author had good intentions, but the book just didn't come across right to me.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Hermoso trabajo

Una forma tierna, práctica y libre de culpas que incluso nos funciona a los adultos. Muy recomendado para la familia.

Gracias!

What a fun little book

I truly enjoyed this book and the illustrations. It also doesn’t hurt that I love penguins. Who doesn’t love penguins, right? Well, maybe a fish in the ocean, being chased down to get eaten.
