The Edge of the Ocean

Rate this book
Pack your suitcase for a magical adventure!

At the Strangeworlds Travel Agency, each suitcase transports you to a different world. All you have to do is step inside...

Flick is now a badge-wearing member of The Strangeworlds Travel Agency so when an urgent summons arrives at Strangeworlds from Pirate Queen Nyfe, she and Strangeworlds Society guardian Jonathon immediately pack their bags for an adventure to Queen Nyfe's world: The Break, a place of magic and piracy.

Nyfe's world is falling apart. The Break is used to having ships vanish without a trace, but there has been a sudden increase that can't be explained by giant squid or mer-people. The edge of their flat world is coming ever closer to them and they need to escape before it collapses entirely.

But how do you sail a ship through a suitcase? How do you fit a mer-queen the size of a whale into something small enough to carry in your hand? Will Flick and Jonathan be able to find a way to transport the inhabitants of the Break to another world before theirs disappears forever?

A magical adventure for 9+ readers that will take you to whole new worlds, perfect for fans of The Train to Impossible Places and The Polar Bear Explorers' Club.

'The Strangeworlds Travel Agency: The Edge of the Ocean' is the kind of sequel that makes you feel like you're coming home when reading it.

Flick and Jonathan are back and are summoned to the magical and nautical world of The Brink, where Pirate Queen Nyfe and the inhabitants of this world are threatened by their entire world's collapse. Pirates, merpeople and the like are in danger of disappearing forever if their world capsizes, so it's up to Flick and Jonathan to do what they can to save them.

I love pirate adventures (thank you Pirates of the Caribbean for sparking this love in me), and I have been clamouring for more of them. This book delivers on this front, and one of the reasons why I love this series so much is the endless possibilities of the multiverses that exists within. You could have a piratey world in one suitcase, and an entirely different world the next, which means this series can hop from setting to setting and carry that magic with them. You literally do not know what to expect. The setting in this was wonderful and appealed to everything I love about nautical adventures, and add Flick and Jonathan (and new character Avery) into the mix, you get yourself a mix of humour and terror (because sword fights and swimming is NOT what they signed up for).

Yes, we have a new character called Avery, Jonathan's cousin, who accompanies them on their adventure. I don't actually know what I can say since the book isn't out yet and I do not want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say I love Avery and I love how she annoys Flick a lot and I love them. That's all I'm gonna say (for now hehe).

Jonathan is and will always be one of my favourite fictional characters of all time now. Two books in and he still surprises me. There's a moment near the start that I was absolutely fangirling over, but just the way he tackles challenges in this piratey world and the banter he has is just so endearing and I love him with my whole heart. The mystery involving his father's disappearance (which developed in the first book) is carried over here, and again, no spoilers, but things get EXTREMELY interesting on that front.

The plot involving the pirates and the mer-people (loved the imagining of the mer-people too by the way) was very exciting, literally from the moment Flick, Jonathan and Avery touch down in this new world, things go wrong INSTANTLY. They don't have an easy time of it, and it's a challenge for them to overcome the new obstacles they are faced. It's easy to get lost in what's going on and rooting for our heroes to win. It's full steam ahead to a climax that has a LOT of people's lives on the line. In short, it's exciting and action-packed with a lot of touching character moments along the way.

And don't even get me started on the things you learn in the Epilogue, oh my days! Strangeworlds 3 cannot come any sooner.

'The Edge of the Ocean' enriches the world Lapinski has summoned up from L.D.'s imagination and I still feel like we are only scratching the surface on that. I may not be able to see magic like Flick, but I know a huge magical schism full of possibility when I see one - and 'The Edge of the Ocean' has magic in abundance.

When Jonathon’s cousin Avery arrived from her world, Flick was immediately suspicious of her. But in the days to come, Flick, Jonathon and Avery would be up to their necks in trouble, and the pressure was mainly on Flick. Strangeworlds Travel Agency was different to all other travel agencies. For a start it housed hundreds of suitcases, all stored in their special place on their special shelves in the agency. Flick, now being a genuine Strangeworlds Travel Agency member, was privy to what was inside the suitcases and always felt a combination of fear and excitement when she and Jonathon were due to use one. The day the message arrived for Jonathon from Queen Nyfe, asking his help, as their world, The Break, was shrinking and breaking away, was the day their lives changed once again. The Break citizens would all die if Strangeworlds were unable to help…

With the edge of the ocean getting closer to Nyfe and her ships; to the mer-folk and other ocean-going species; to Captain Burnish and his crew – Flick knew she had to do something. Between Jonathon and her, they knew the suitable suitcase to find – but would they be able to do so? And then, could Flick use her magic in the way everyone needed? The pressure was intense!

The Edge of the Ocean is the 2nd in the Strangeworlds Travel Agency series by L.D. Lapinski and it was a delightful read, filled with magic, wonderful characters and exceptional worlds. The cover is outstanding with so much detail, it helps bring the story to life. For the youngsters in our lives – and the not so young! – The Edge of the Ocean is one I recommend highly.

With thanks to Hachette AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Another very delightful and fun middle grade adventure from L.D Lapinski! Have the same feeling of wanting to continue on with the next on right away but don't think my library had that yet (if it's out)

A most magical sequel to the Strangeworlds Travel Agency. I think I enjoyed this more than the 1st! Utterly delightful and bursting with imagination. I loved this!

This adventure really hooked me in from the start. I was welcomed back into the Strangeworlds Travel Agency with open arms. A swashbuckling adventure featuring pirates, mermaids, and, of course, magical travelling suitcases, all filled with secrets and magic.

There is such positive representation in this book, perfect for middle grade, breaking the stigma of generic relationship in tweens and teenagers. The characters are brilliant and lovable, each capturing pieces of my bookish heart with their funny, quirky, and strong charactersitics. Their relationships are dynamic and work perfectly with the fantastic, and fast-paced plot. Jonathan my little cinnamon roll, is my favourite, he's like a serious version of the eleventh doctor!

The plot twist...woo...that plot twist was awesome and I did not see it coming. The author's writing and pacing is (chef's kiss), fast becoming one of my favourite writers. Lapinksi was made to write children's fiction!

The way the series is heading is getting better and better, and I cannot wait dive into another suitcase adventure again and again!

I liked the second volume better than the first, which was certainly due to the fact that the world and the characters that appeared this time (besides the main characters), is a pirate-like world with characters who act similar to pirates. The book also continues to get closer to solving the big mystery behind the trilogy and a few things are revealed again, especially around Flick. It is a nice series, I will also read the last part.

This was the second book in the series Strangeworlds Travel Agency. I read also the first one and I liked it, but if I have to be honest, I liked this one much more. In my opinion the action of this second part was more interesting and also more thrilling. The world where the action of the book took place, and all the pirates and sea creatures in it, was amazing. My fantasy could work at full speed while imagining these creatures and while imagining what was happening in the story. I also liked more Flick in this book, she seemed more mature and through the story she could discover better her magic powers. And the end of the book was so surprising. I look forward the last book of this trilogy.

Another brilliantly enjoyable read from L.D.Lapinski. The world hopping premise of this series is just so much fun to read, and each world is new and exciting to follow and learn about.
.
I’m excited to see how Flick and Averys relationship will develop in the next book, aswell as seeing what other magical worlds there are out there to explore!

A solid 4*!

So I always worry that the second book in the series won't be as good as the first.
But it was in fact better, the new characters were fantastic and hope they appear in future books.

Never thought traveling to other worlds and such high stakes would leave me so bored. I thought the first book was bad but boy did this one blow the first out of the water for being a big dull dud.
I wouldn’t have cared less if everyone had died in this book. Fell asleep every time I picked it up. Won’t be carrying on with this series unless I have trouble sleeping.

- My thoughts on this are so conflicted. I didn't really feel gripped at all by the first 100 pages of this book and I truly don't know why, I just wasn't feeling any connection towards it and never gravitated towards the book once I put it down so I left it for a few days. However, when I picked this back up tonight I was just so hooked. I don't even know what changed but I read the last 250 pages in one sitting because I just couldn't stop reading. I am so ready for the next book!!

And the story continues! This time with the addition of a flat world, new characters, pirates and mer-people!

Flick continues to discover more about herself, her powers and what is happening at Strangeworlds - #nospoliers

I wish I had reread the first before reading, as I loved it and someone I had forgotten some characters that made an appearance in this book.

Can't wait to find out what happens next and I'll definitely be preordering!

This was such a brilliant sequel. We get to see the characters we already know and love but also meet new ones (Avery was especially enjoyable and her and Flick are so adorable). The plot is well paced and very clever, I adore the world building done in this series.

Cannot wait for more especially after that ending!

I'm finding it really hard to review this one. I still do love the whole world and the characters so much, but there were a couple of bits that didn't quite make sense to me and brought me out of the flow of the adventure. Nevertheless I already can't wait for the next book and will be pre-ordering as soon as it's available!

I wanted to like this, it had all the makings of a book that I would like but I just could not get into it and found it very boring and a chore to read. None of the main characters were likeable at all and honestly it took about 250 pages for the story to begin to be interesting despite being about world hopping pirates. Disappointing and quite glad to finally have finished it as it felt like it was never ending

I was so excited to dive back into a suitcase with The Strangeworlds Travel Agency and "The Edge of the Ocean" did not disappoint!

From the prologue I was HOOKED. I was so impressed by how this sequel dealt with the events of the first book, whilst throwing you straight into a new adventure. I was so captivated by the dynamics of the pirates and their particular world from the very beginning- and my curiosity only grew as more was revealed.

There were twists and secrets I could never have seen coming- and the reveal of each one kept me on my toes waiting to learn more! I did guess one quite big twist, however I am an adult reading a middle-grade book and so did not see this as an issue in the slightest, and just as that was revealed the author SHOOK me with a second secret that I never could have predicted!

Also the new characters were so absolutely fantastic! If you fell in love with Flick and Jonathan in the first book (which...duhhh...we all did) their personalities and relationship just get better and better, but I really adored how well written the new faces were too.
Avery is BRILLIANT and the dynamic between her and Flick had me shouting things at the page (I can't say what because: spoilers!).
Everyone in the pirate world was so well written, to the point where minor side characters had clear personalities and stories I wanted to learn more about.

Basically: THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!
I devoured it in two sittings in one night (staying up until midnight as I just could not put it down), and can promise you that you will love it!

Only issue: I need book 3 NOW PLEASE.

Both Juliet and I enjoyed this more than the first. The world of The Break was fascinating and it was fun to learn more about Flick's magic. However, I still don't love the age gap between Flick & Jonathan - especially in light of some of their interactions/arguments in this volume. I really enjoyed the addition of Avery and Juliet is excited to get to Book #3 as soon as it comes out!

No me a gustado mucho por qué los dos libros este y el primero no empieza la trama hasta el final casi me parece demasiado largo porque pone muchas cosas pero casi sin importancia y se me a hecho un poco pesado.

Magic was a multi-use tool, like a Swiss Army knife that could be used to cut or saw or magnify.

What a cool book story! And what a rollercoaster at the end. Loved it. One of the best books I’ve read in a few years.

Adventure? Check! Great characters? Check! Emotional? Check! Fun? Check!

I can’t wait to the read the third and final book.

Picked this up on a whim, I really enjoyed this second in the series- perhaps better than the first. I'm hoping to finish some series up before the end of the year and this one would be great to get ticked off the list!
I liked the pirates and the mer-people, Felicity is really growing on me too as a main character.

After arriving back home quite late from her adventure in the City of Five Lights, Flick is in a whole heap of trouble with her parents. She is grounded for the whole of the summer holidays. After bumping in to Jonathan in the supermarket Flick comes up with a plan to get back to Strangeworlds. Jonathan receives an urgent summons from Pirate Queen Nyfe, so Jonathan and Flick travel to the world of The Break. This is a world of ocean and islands, pirates and mer-people, but it is shrinking by the day. Magic is being taken from their world and bits of it are breaking off and disappearing. Queen Nyfe has summoned Jonathan in the hope that he can help the inhabitants of The Break escape before it is too late. When the suitcase is stolen from Flick they know that they need to retrieve it, otherwise no one will escape this world. Flick, Jonathan, and Avery must figure out how to save everyone, from the inhabitants to their ships, using just a small suitcase.

The Edge of the Ocean is a brilliant sequel, that adds depth to the story arc, while being a rip-roaring, page-turner of a story in its own right. It’s a story of a rescue mission, filled with adventure, mystery and magic. Like any rescue mission there are risks but Jonathan, Flick and Avery do anything they can to alleviate these. One of the things I loved most about the first book was Jonathan and Flick hopping through suitcases to show Flick new worlds. I was worried that there wouldn’t be much of this in this book, but I wasn’t disappointed. They still visit plenty of worlds while trying to find a new home for the inhabitants of The Break.

L.D. Lapinski ensures that her cast of characters is diverse and I really like that. Her characters are unique and interesting, and I love how you learn something new about them with each book. Jonathan is transgender, which was hinted at in the first book. I don’t think it is explicitly stated that he is transgender, but L.D. Lapinski has talked about this in interviews. It is also hinted, in this book, that Jonathan is gay (he has a slightly embarrassing interaction in the supermarket with a guy he knows from college). Flick develops feelings for Jonathan’s cousin Avery in this book (Avery feels the same) and it’s possible that their relationship could develop in the next book. I love the way that these details about the characters are just part of who they are, rather than it being explicit that they’re transgender or gay. There will be readers that hugely identify with Jonathan or Flick because of their identity and those who just love the characters because they’re brave, adventurous and funny.

Families are an important part of this book too. Flick’s family were scared and worried when she when she returned late from the City of Five Lights in the first book, and they ground her to keep her at home. Flick is then conscious that she can’t do the same thing again and let them down. Jonathan has been looking for his missing father for months, with no sign of him. The Pirate Queen gives him some information that leaves him distressed. Flick and Jonathan are themselves a little family, as they are part of the Strangeworlds Travel Agency, and Jonathan’s cousin, Avery, joins them on this adventure. Without giving spoilers, there are also some intriguing family connections revealed in this book.

The ending of The Edge of the Ocean was incredibly exciting and made me desperate for the third book. I can’t wait to see where L.D. Lapinski takes us next!

This was absolutely delightful; I somehow loved it even more than the first and the amount I loved the first was immense. I love Flick and Johnathon and the delightful addition of Avery - Flick and Avery made me laugh so much but also made my heart melt - cannot wait to see where that goes...

There were so many empowering moments in this book and also so many moments that made me want to cry.

If you haven't read this series yet you really need to pick it up!
