Armed with a penchant for yoga, astrology, and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Rachel Lear is thrust into the real world when her father cuts her off, forcing her to lose weight, get a job, and, with the help of her best friend who is a witch, conjure up the man of her dreams, with disastrous results. Original.

Not as good as the first 2 of the trilogy. In this one, sister #3, Rachel, the one going for her PHd does a little bit of white magic and meets the Brit, Flynn. Her ex the professor has been involved in stealing art and storing it in her home. She holds weaving classes. It was good to see the series through but not really worth the pain. Would not re-read.

Rachel kelimpungan mencari pekerjaan utk menutupi biaya-biaya standar. Kalau Robin (kakaknya) krn punya selera gaya hidup jetset kelas atas, Rachel sebaliknya, karena terlalu baik meminjamkan uangnya pada teman-temannya dan enggan utk menagihnya (terutama kpd pacar platoniknya tsb, interaksi mereka sangat menyebalkan). Poor girl!!!
Klimaks cerita malah menjadi antiklimaks menurut saya. Author terlihat buru-buru ingin menyelesaikan dgn happy ending.
This has been a most enjoyable series. I just loved Rachel and Flynn. This book has a great plot and delightful cast of characters. The ending was just perfection. Happy ☺reading 📚!
Good title. The book was great! Love the happily ever afters........but the epilogue. Grrr. That should have been a two chapter. The Christmas/wedding and ...... it just stopped like my review.
No where near as good as the first 2 books in the series. I really don't get how Rachel was so damn clueless about Myron, and don't get me started on the atrocious and clichéd "British" accent!
I enjoyed the first two books but this one is so far fetched. Someone doing a doctorate degree, in a factual subject being into witchcraft! Really? It Doesn’t add up. I’m English... is this really how American people think English people speak? It was making me laugh, I’ve never actually heard some of the words used before (maybe on TV by the Queen lol) although I did know what they were trying to say. It was making me laugh but I’m sure that was not intentional. Trying to persevere with it but it’s like it doesn’t even belong to the same trilogy
This was a nice story to finish the Lear Family Trilogy series. Rachel is the youngest of the Lear sisters. She has been in school and now working on a doctorate for years, her father has cut her off, so she is working temp jobs to try (unsuccessfully) to pay her bills. She has an ex-boyfriend, Myron, who just continues to mooch from her and refuses to pay her back the money he borrowed. She meets Flynn and he's British and awesome and she really starts to feel better about herself (her father and others are always harping on her weight, and she doesn't have a boyfriend, a career, money or anything). But it turns out Flynn isn't who she thinks he is, and Myron is even more of a scum than she thought. An entertaining novel with lots of crazy family dynamics to which we can all relate.
Sadly, I thought it would be better. But oh well. Still funny. Although Rachel annoyed me soooo much! How can a HISTORY student not recognize a true historical relic? And how can she be fine with her EX coming in her house whenever, storing his stuff there and borrowing her stuff without telling her?! And how can she be so naive?! It is not humanly possible to be so gullible!
Finally finished reading it. It was long. Like very long. The heroine is 31 years old, and Holi wouldn't notice because she acts dumb. She is doing her PhD, so it feels dumber. The ex boyfriend is irritating, the best friend was irritating too, so were the hero's mother and ex fiancee. It was just a load of nonsense that I would like to forget asap.
All things considered I think this was probably my favorite of the 3 books because it wasn't predictable. I wasn't especially fond of the stereotyped presentation of the only 2 African American characters In the book, i.e. their vernacular, and having multiple, mischievous children. The rest of the book was actually very well presented.
I truly enjoyed reading the Lear Sister series! All different in their own special way, but in the end found true love. Along with the head of the household finding love again.
Miss Fortune is the final book from Lear Family trilogy by Julia London. Finally, we met the third sister, Rachel Lear. Of all the three sisters, I love Rachel most. Mostly because she’s the geek of the family. She’s a doctoral student majoring in British history. She’s been a student for a long time that her father is threatening her to quit the school and dive into the real world. Rachel also has an ex-boyfriend problem. Her ex is being so dependent on her. She doesn’t have the heart to kick him out of her life. She feels okay with her appearance, until people around her giving subtle hint for her to lose some weight. Reading about Rachel’s life alone is fun. She’s the most down to earth sister of the three. Her struggles are real. She has a lack of confidence. Mostly because she’s shadowed by her two beautiful sisters. That caused her to doubt the fact that a handsome British guy is attracted to her. Aside from the romance part, this book also has mystery bit in it. The handsome British guy, Flynn, bears secrets that might destroy Rachel or help her. Aaron Lear appears more constantly than in the two previous books. His character grows from an old man who whines about everything, to an understanding father who actually listens to his daughters. I love the father-daughter connection in this book. It’s heart wrenching to see how Aaron’s intention on helping his daughters is often misinterpreted. The romance part in this book almost has the same feel as the previous two. It’s presented as a rom-com and has its funny moments. It’s all fun and I did enjoy it. However, I’m more intrigued by Rachel’s personal struggles and how she deals with it. In the end, it’s a good conclusion for the trilogy. I don’t mind about the happily ever after at all. It’s better that way after all the conflict that the family encountered. Lear Family trilogy is an enjoyable contemporary series.

For this final entry in this easy to read series we are treated to the third sister who has yet to find her way. Rachel lives far from the family home and while they stayed in touch via email and phone this one didn't really feel part of the series (IMO). It wasn't that this had less in common or in touch with the other family members the entire tone of it was different. This installment is more madcap fun and has missed opportunities to make this one more "it could happen to you" but those same things actually make this story more accessible than its predecessors. Rachael has a full life and we finally get to see what her relationship with Myron is really like - she isn't having any fun there and half the reason is that she has always been in her sisters shadow - whether real or imagined. Rachael's really down on her luck with no job, no funds, her tree has fallen on her neighbor's fence, she allows herself to be treated as a doormat, a mooching boyfriend with his own agenda, she keeps getting tongue-tied and suffering from a severe case of stupiditis whenever she is around hot British import Flynn Oliver who's mending a broken heart. When Rachael's life starts to turn around, she doesn't realize it at first but eventually comes to love tea. While I liked the leads separately and the secondary characters I would have been fine without this installment. I didn't like this third entry nearly as much as the other two. Mainly because I felt Rachel whined waaaaay too much! That is not to say this isn't a fun rainy day or beach read.
This is the third and final story in the series about the Lear sisters, their parents and their men. This one does read more as a crime novel with good doses of romance thrown in. There are lots of quirky elements and characters, because Rachel is the quirkiest of the three sisters.
Start from the beginning.
"And while Rachel could seem a bit strange, what with all the Eastern philosophies and witchcraft and tapestry weaving, she was uncommonly stimulating. She had an immutable and charming personality, was compassionate and free."--thinks Flynn
Miss Fortune the final book in The Fancy Lives of the Lear Sisters. Rachel is the youngest of the three girls and in her opinion the ugly sister, with a riot head of hair and slightly pudgy she doesn’t feel like she belongs. She has spent the last five years struggling to find a topic for her dissertation and finally get her PhD in ancient British history. Her Father tired of her procrastination and loafing around gives her an ultimatum write it or get cut off. Now cut off from her father’s wealth she is working temp jobs and teaching a weaving class just to get buy. Rachel’s best friend a self proclaimed white witch is determined to help solve all her problems, find a job, lose weight, and find true love. Flynn Oliver is a British native who’s reasons for being in the states is a little bit mysterious. Rachel thinks nothing of this chance meeting until her ex-boyfriend is discovered breaking the law. Suddenly Rachel doesn’t know if she can trust him anymore. Rachel is a character that is easy to love, a caring individual whose niceness gets her in to trouble. Flynn despite not being completely honest in the beginning knows just the right sweet honest words spoken in a British accent that will melt your heart.
Lastly, we have "Miss Fortune", probably my least favorite in the series. This novel revolves around Rachel Lear, a carefree student with a big heart and even bigger ambitions. Her biggest problem is a nasty habit of letting people walk all over her. As a result of this she is flat broke. To make matters worse, a tree has fallen on her house and partially across her neighbors fence, causing a broken window and a lawsuit.
Rachel curses the world while her ex-boyfriend keeps showing up at her house uninvited and her best friend Dagne keeps convincing her to try some white magic as a way to change her luck. Rachel jokingly wishes for true love with a hot man with an accent.
Low and behold Flynn Oliver shows up in her life. He is a temporary transplant from England, Stateside working as a computer programmer. He has his eyes on Rachel from the moment he meets her, but she finds the situation more than a little bit curious.
When a rash of art thefts plagues the city Rachel finds out that not everyone, or everything is as it seems to be.
This novel wraps up the series in a nice little bow. I highly recommend the series.
Well, I was glad to see that Aaron finally got his head on straight, but other than that, I didn't particularly care for this book. Something in this book make me not like Bonnie very much, while in the first two books, I got the impression that the whole debacle was Aaron's fault. Bonnie was way too self-righteous in this book.
And the main characters? All three of the Lear daughters were spoiled brats, but Rachel was my least favorite. She's all about being nice to everyone, so that was a point in her favor, but she had no backbone and no desire to get one. She was just very annoying, and she was surrounded by annoying people.
I'm not sure if I liked Flynn or not. He was stuck in the typical undercover-cop-falls-for-suspect trap, but that wasn't what bugged me. I guess I'm too much into the "happily ever after" type of romances, but cheating bugs me. Okay, he didn't really cheat, but he sure didn't have a problem with getting up close and personal with another woman - until Rachel busted him.
This was definitely my least favorite of the trilogy. I'm glad it's over. I'd hate to see it get worse.

The Lear Sisters Trilogy by Julia London Material Girl, Beauty Queen, and Miss Fortune. Material Girl – Oldest sister Robin is a high powered V.P. at daddy’s company a job she is ill prepared for and frankly sucks at. Meet Jake a guy from the wrong side of the tracks trying to make it as a contractor while studying architecture. Beauty Queen – Middle sister former Miss Texas, Rebecca, is newly divorced from her childhood sweetheart with a small child who cries for his nanny. Meet man whore Matt the lawyer with a heart. Miss Fortune – Sweet, quirky, baby sister Rachel professional student and self-saboteur. Meet Flynn investigator for Lloyds of London. I really liked the fact that I could relate to all three sisters. I wasn’t sure I would because I mean “poor little rich girl” times three. But even rich girls have daddy issues. All three girls could be someone you’ve met. Pushy over achiever Rachel, underestimated good looker Rebecca, and Rachel with a heart of gold who lets everyone walk over her because she never feels good enough. Warning somehow Jake’s nephew Cole from Material Girl turns into his son in the next two books.
"Despite what her family believes, Rachel Lear does want to take control of her life. After investing four years on her still-to-be-completed doctorate, Rachel wants to graduate and find a "real" job and a boyfriend. Thus, when her friend Dagne offers to whip up a spell to help out, Rachel is willing to ignore her natural skepticism of all things magical and participate. Shortly thereafter, Rachel starts bumping into sexy Englishman Flynn Oliver. Intrigued by the delightfully charming Rachel, Flynn, who is in Providence working on a case, desperately wants Rachel to know she doesn't have to work any magic to get his attention; he is already under her spell. With a saucy wit, London brings her delightful trilogy featuring the Lear sisters, including Beauty Queen, to a triumphant conclusion, and her sharp, snappy writing style is the perfect complement to this deliciously entertaining story of a not-so-ugly duckling who discovers her own true worth." Miss. Fortune is a great conclusion to the Lear trilogy...it keeps it's humour and a cute romance.
Kaya tdk menjamin cerdas. Rachel lg sekolah S2 yg ga selesai2, bikin bokapnya menghentikan pasokan uang. Ditambah Myron, "mantan pacar" yg cuman bisa pinjem uang atau hp (& ga dibalikin pula) nebeng makan, egosentris, tp Rachel ttp mau aja temenan ama dia. Pdhal ortu, bff, kakaknya udah nasehatin dari lembut sampai mengancam tetap aja Rachel bloon blm lg soal percaya mumbo jumbo sihir horoskop, yaelah pakai logika aja neng, menyedihkan bacanya.
Parahnya lg Myron manfaatin rumahnya Rachel buat nyimpen barang2 curian dr museum. Aduh lama amat ini episode begonya Rachel ke Myron, spt JL yg biasa paling2 Rachel sadar pas akhir2.
I got this book for free on Goodreads giveaway. It was my first Julia London book and it was the third in a series. It started out like a romantic comedy which is different from the books I usually read. I was not sure I would like it at first but I soon started to enjoy the quirky characters. The book is about Rachel Lear who is in her eyes "the ugly duckling of the family". She could not believe it when charming Flynn Oliver was interested in her. When she finds out the real reason Flynn is interested in her she is devastated. Flynn has his work cut out for him to convince her that it was not all and act. An enjoyable read, I did not feel I needed to read the first two to understand what was going on although I do plan to go back and read them.
In this book Rachel Lear who is thirty years old and is still in school for her doctorate has her financial support cut off from her father who wants her to be able to live in the real world instead of the academic bubble that she has created for herself. She is forced to take a series of temp jobs in order to pay the bills through a magic spell that her best friend has performed a handsome British man enters into her life. While learning how to rely on herself for support she also falls in love. She also has an ex boyfriend who has secrets that Rachel learns by the end of the book, Flynn her British boyfriend also has some secrets as well.
