His game plan was simple. Qualify for the Culling. Find a woman. Win the presidency.
It was a carefully cultivated plan that dictated all his life’s decisions . . . until two women upend everything.
Twenty-one years after his parents won the presidency, a Culling is called. James has waited his entire life for this moment, a chance to carry on his parents’ legacy. Meanwhile, whispers in Denver of an “Heir’s Curse” make a Reed winning the presidency seem impossible. A presidential heir has never won a Culling before, but there has also never been a Culling where three heirs could qualify. James and his siblings are determined to break the so-called curse and prove them all wrong.
But when forced to choose between the easy love that could secure the presidency and a difficult one, what will James do?
*This is book 1 of 4 in the spinoff for The Culling series.
Tricia Wentworth is the award-winning author of The Culling series. Though she began writing at a young age, she didn’t realize her love of writing would take over until after she graduated college with her teaching degree. She currently resides in Nebraska with her husband, three sons, and English bulldog. She hoards notebooks, pretty pens, books, and tea. When not reading, writing, or momming, she can be found squeezing in a run or feeding her sugar addiction by baking something ridiculously delicious.
A well-written novel. The development of the main characters was good, but for someone who enjoys a fairly fast, suspenseful, action oriented story, I found it moved rather slowly.
I do realize this is the first in a series, and so the author is likely establishing a better picture of the main characters. And, possibly setting up the underlying storyline for easier, faster use in subsequent novels without belaboring the details when the story has picked up speed. In support of that thought, I did notice the last 5-10 chapters (30 chapters in all) increased in pace and suspense.
As I read this novel it reminded me at times of the Hunger Games. It is similar in its depiction of the USA in a post-catastrophe condition, and in the youthfulness of its main characters (early 20s).
The novel ended in a suspenseful way, leaving the reader hanging in a pivotal part of the plot. The next in the series is due out in January 2021. As of this writing, I am uncertain of my continuance with the series.
The Legacy: James is a great follow-up to her debut series, The Culling.
Legacy: James takes place 21+ years after the events of the end of the Culling series. The main character is James, the first born son of Reagan (née Scott) and Lyncoln Reed, and twin to his sister Kennedy. They have a younger brother named Elijah. Also we get to meet the daughter of Henry Maxwell, who was also a main character in the original series. They are the Heirs.
It has been 21 years since the last Culling, when Reagan and Lyncoln won and became the Presidential couple. Now it is time for another Culling to select the next Presidential couple. James and Kennedy are now 21, and Elijah is 18. They have all been preparing for this, their whole lives.
The Heirs all enter the selection pool for the Culling, in which 50 boys and 50 girls will be chosen, from all across the Union.
All 4 heirs make it, to the shock of nation. Some citizens feel it is rigged and unfair. Among the candidates are boys and girls from the new 7th township, which is populated by former Rebels to the Union.
James takes the whole Culling extremely seriously and is set on finding a wife, to whom he will give his whole heart and soul to, and will be the next Madame President. He want to honor his parents' legacy and lead with strength and honor, should he win.
James finds it hard to turn off his Military Mode and become completely immersed in the Culling. As they eliminations of the candidates begins, and progresses, James finds himself drawn to two women. He now has to choose.
Meanwhile, The Rebels are back, after 21 years of near peace. As things begin to escalate, James makes his choice for his partner and his future wife. With the threat from the rebels, and the Culling still in process, who will ultimately win?
I absolutely loved this book. There was so much humor in it, that got me literally laughing out loud. It is a quicker read than the Culling books, because it's about 200 pages shorter.
I liked the slight change of perspective the story was told from, verses the Culling. Although I do miss being deep in the main character's more. This book also read a lot smoother, as it had been more refined with having an editor.
I highly recommend this book and can't wait until the next book comes out in January 2021!
Welcome to the next generation of the blow out series, The Culling. I was so impressed by the "first generation" that I reached out to the author and she sent me the book ahead of time. I don't write reviews about the book content. I write about my impressions and reactions. I LOVE Tricia Wentworth's work.
I am THOROUGHLY impressed by the quality of the writing and editing. I wish all author's were as accurate and consistent with the storyline and minute details. When you go back to read a section again, I guarantee it will be because you WANT to.
I also want to point out something that I'm not sure what to call it. Most books are not like you're actually living through the story. They suck you in, wrap you up and can frequently make you feel as if you are there - but there's always that "something" (probably different for us all) which prevents you from being immersed as if you are the characters. You will be there. You will experience it. It's AMAZING AND AWESOME.
In my opinion, you don't have to have read the parent story to be able to understand and seriously love this one; however, if you haven't -you should go - like right now - and do that. Go ahead. We'll wait right here!
I fell in love with Tricia Wentworth’s writing in The Culling Series and I flew through those so quick so when she released the announcement for The Legacy James I was so excited to get a front row seat to the next culling! If you haven’t read the Culling Series I would definitely recommend that first since this book is a spinoff of that series!!
This one follows James Reed and his journey to the culling! I will not post spoilers but this book was absolutely fantastic!!
Of course nothing can go easy in the culling!! From threats from outside and from within I can’t wait for Kennedy’s book!!!
Tricia Wentworth is my all time favorite writer. Her writing gives detail, but not to the point where it bores the reader. I have easily read her series, The Culling, at least 3 times all the way through. When I first received this book via mail from my grandma, who lives in the same small town as Mrs. Wentworth, I was beyond excited to see it was signed. Once I began reading this book, I finished it in two days because I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!! This book brought action, surprise, romance, and everything I could ever want. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
Not sure how this book got such high ratings... it was pretty boring. The description makes it sound like an intense and dangerous competition/culling. ...but it wasn't. At all. It was mostly James trying to decide which girl to campaign with/marry. And even then, the love story is weak. I enjoyed the first books (about James parents), but this one was more about politics. "How should we run the country? What changes would be best?" I rated it 3 stars, which means it was OK. I wouldn't recommend or not recommend it. I'll probably forget about it.
LOTS OF EXCITEMENT & ROMANCE IN A DYSTOPIAN WORLD!!!:-)
ADORED this one!!:-). The romance in this one is SOOOO BEAUTIFUL!!! The action and adventure in this dangerous Dystopian world will keep the pages turning faster and faster until you reach the end and are sad that it ended, but totally pumped to get into the next one!!!:-). The writing is real, rich, and deeply powerful and draws you right in!!!:-). LOVED it!!!:-)
I love this author and the Culling Series more than any words could express. Every time I read one, I feel as if I’ve been transported there and am viewing it all from first Reagan’s point of view and now that of James. I cannot wait for the next book, as I can already tell Kennedy may be my favorite of the heirs!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a continuation of the Culling series which takes place about twenty years after the final book. It's the story of the previous stories three children and their turn at the Culling. So much better and I love all the characters and found it so hard to put down. Looking forward to more.
Nothing short of amazing. James and Ember are a powerhouse couple. They are what the country needs following Lyncoln and Reagan. If you haven't read the intial series The Culling you really should.
This is a follow-up to The Culling series. The three children now have their turn in the culling. And what is a culling without twists and turns and threats. Written just as well as the original series. I couldn’t put it down!
Well-written interesting post-apocalyptic story that kept me up to 2:30 a.m. to see how it ended. And then it didn't. Last page said "(to be continued)" Aargh! pays to read the small print. Anyway, it was a good start, interesting characters and family relationships.
I read this book after I read The Culling, and although I liked The Culling better, this was a good book. I liked the characters and the relationships they had, but I did not feel as immersed in this book as I did in her earlier series, maybe because it was in third person point of view. I will continue the series though because it was still a good book.
a great start to the sequel series. i felt the love triangle was a little too predictable but other then that i really enjoyed it. looking forward to starting the next book in the morning. Interested in seeing how the perspectives change the narrative and story line as the next few books continue
