Travelers #1.6

The death of Dewbell’s husband is only the latest blow in a life of hardships and tragedy. But depression—her constant companion—does not keep her from being vigilant of those in need, especially when they’re children.

So when she takes a new job as an armed guard with her brother-in-law, escorting a “father” and his five-year-old boys from the city of Hammerlink and through the wasteland to a new town, her instincts warn her that their escortee, Eliot, is not who he says he is. Jumpy and aloof, he’s disinterested in caring for the twins and seems unsure of his own story. Aware of the vile practice of buying and selling orphaned children in Hammerlink, Dewbell cannot tolerate delivering the kids into the hands of people who will abuse them.

But Dewbell is a novice guard, unpracticed with her gun, and calling Eliot out on his deceptive motivations could not only put her and her brother-in-law in danger, but the little boys she’s sworn to protect.

“No matter how bad her depression, no matter how much tragedy fell into her lap, she was still breathing, so she had to suck it up and keep going. The world wouldn’t stop if she did. But that didn’t mean she had to be happy about this job.”

Dewbell kind of got roped into this escort job bring Eliot and the twin youngsters to find their grandmother and safety from their mother, who would occasionally try to sell them at the auction. We kind of get to see inside Dewbell’s thought processes and her obvious longing to be a mother.

A short story in Alia Hess’s series where they write about the world post-apocalypse. The entire series is marvelous and this is no exception. High recommended 5/5

Another tale of the Travelers and again it'll tug on your heartstrings. I adored Dewbell when we met her in Chromeheart and here we see her fighting the demons on the road as well as the demons of her past. Her ability to care for the lost children out of the cities even when she's suffering so much... She's such a brave and beautiful person, and it's rare to even read of a deaf character at all. Some really sweet hurt/comfort writing.
