Queen Isadora reigns with secrets and lies and will do whatever it takes to keep her throne, including killing the rightful heir. Hunted by the Queen, Kenna is thrust into the center of a rebellion that seeks to end her tyranny.
Now she must learn what it means to rise up and rule, but does she have what it takes? Or will the cost of the rebellion be more than she can give?
As the stirrings of war threaten to tear the country apart Kenna must fight to hold her Chosen together before they too become another causality.
I'm a Washington State native where I live in a tiny house with my kiddo, surrounded by all that is green.
On the rare occasion that I'm not writing... I can be found working on my green thumb, which, considering I used to kill all the the green things, is an improvement. Behind my camera capturing memories with my kiddo at the beach, on a trail, or just because. Or holding my bow, pretending to be Katniss, which clearly I'm not.

I thought book one was fantastic but then I got my hands on this one and OMG!! Kenna is truly starting to come out of her shell this time. Thrown into a rebellion she had no clue existed she attempts to keep up her training while having all sorts of things thrown at her. On top of that is the relationship building with her Chosen that will be vitally important at some point. This all combines into a fascinating story that you will be unable to put down once you get going. If you like paranormal RH with lots of magic and action then you have to try this series. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
Willow Hayes continues her Magic Bound series with her second installment Rebel and Reign. Kenna has managed to survive kidnap attempts and attacks on herself and her friends. She managed to rescue Rya with help from the rebellion whom she has now joined. She is the rightful heir to the throne, but with the Queen knowing fully well that she is alive, she will have to fight for every bit of ground she is to claim. Rebel and Reign picks up where book one left off with Kenna and her Chosen joining the rebellion who came to their rescue at the medical center and helped her men survive and them all to escape. Things are moving forward, but Kenna is going to have to make choices that she isn’t too keen on. I appreciate that she has developed some as a character and that while her “fiery” temper is still there she’s toned it down a bit, but just…a bit. When someone tells her something she doesn’t like she’s quick to stomp out of their presence to sulk. Not very queenly of her really. For those readers who are salivating for some steamy moments in this reverse harem romance (with climbing numbers) rest assured…there is no more slow burn in this book. You get lots of steamy moments scattered throughout. I don’t mind the additional numbers but I don’t like that the author tries to push things as “insta-love.” There is only ONE that I will believe is truly love at this point, not going to say which because that would ruin the surprise, but the rest I only view as “insta-lust” because they don’t know her or have JUST met her in the past few days/weeks. Things are just rushed in the “romance” department so things are a bit of a reach for me right now. I get that the characters are attracted to each other but constantly focus on her being “f**king sexy” and how “sexy” they each are gets old. It makes their attraction/connection seem really superficial at best because there is no…real basis or foundation for a relationship to develop that will truly last beyond a mark identifying them as “Chosen.” This book is more storyline based than action based. I keep waiting for some action to happen and that doesn’t occur until much…MUCH later in the book. I also kept waiting on Queen Isadora to make an appearance and likewise with the action…that takes a long time to happen. I think that this is a mistake for the storyline. You have this “shadow” villain but you never really see them. I wanted chapters/scenes with the Queen of where we’d see her working with her people to hunt down Kenna and her men. I think that it would have added something more to the storyline. It was really something that I was hopeful for since there weren’t any scenes with the Queen in the first book. So I feel that not having any scenes/chapters with the Queen is a miss that hurts this book. There were some aspects that I enjoyed about this book, but it wasn’t what I had truly hoped for after book one. For awhile I was hopeful and enjoying this book as it is less about Kenna training, learning about her magic, etc. Kenna starts meeting some of the others who have been impacted by the Queen’s orders and decisions and is able to make a positive impact on them by showing them who she is. I like that a couple of the guys help her with this. It makes me like them more for it, because they help guide her down the path that she needs to take inorder to show the people that she can and will be what they need when she takes the throne and becomes Queen. I wanted to rate this book higher, but the longer it drew on without any chapters/scenes with the Queen and the story not having a lot of action causes me to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. A lot of repetitive phrases and the pushing of the “insta-love” were also drawbacks for me. I really don’t see myself continuing this series at this point. If you enjoyed the first book and don’t mind the more character driven storyline then, of course, I encourage you to pick this book up and continue the series. You’re in for a couple of nice surprises.
This is one of those series, and for sure one of those books, that feels a little hard to rate and review. The first book needed a lot of time to build up everything, but I really loved the pay off at the end and I was also quite curious where the story would go. I was therefore very excited to pick this one up and I hoped that the book would pick up speed, just like it did in the last part of the first book and that it would get more and more interesting.
And I'm not sure if that really happened. The first book consisted of our heroine getting to know her powers, her guys and who she truly is. I was actually hoping that this book would be all about her really starting that revolution and bringing it to the Queen. I was hoping for politics and intrigue, for epic fights and battles, for a heroine who would grow and grow, for a few more mates added to the harem and for a little less preparation and a little more epicness.
I didn't really get that. Mostly because our heroine wasn't ready for that. She still had growing and learning to do. She had to learn how to lead, how to be a Queen, how to rule and she actually needed the entire book to get there. Which is realistic and natural, but I have to admit that the amount of times we got a detailed description of another training sessions became a little much and the scenes where really something was happening were a little short.
However, the book also had enough elements to keep me interested. The politics was there. Our main heroine maybe wasn't involved yet, but I really enjoyed the game the Queen was playing. I also really enjoyed how our heroine slowly grew into her own person and figured out what kind of leader and Queen she wanted to be and why it was so important to step up and do something. So, I really do want to read the last book and I hope that maybe this time I will get what I am hoping for!
I’m think I’m being really generous giving this book 2 stars. I just realized that there isn’t much of anything I like about this story at all.
All of the characters are very boring and flat. No one has much personality at all. Even the way she has sex with her men is boring and predictable. Every night she chooses a different mate to sleep with her and they have sex. Just what I’m looking for in and RH. They are like boring old people.
I’ve decided that I absolutely detest the FMC. She’s so wishy-washy. She goes from one extreme to another within seconds. One minute she’s confidently telling everyone to fuck off and the next she’s too shy to look up from the floor. One minute she’s happy and flirty, and the next she’s sobbing and running away. One minute she’s taking the reins of the rebellion and acting like a future leader, the next she’s proclaiming that she can’t rule and she doesn’t want to be queen. I just can’t with this girl!
Let’s take a minute to talk about repetition. We get to read the same scenes over and over and over again from different perspectives. Same dialogue, same everything, except we get to see what a different character thinks about it all. That is so effing boring. It really ruins the continuity and flow of the story.
The plot is interesting, if not predictable. The ‘big bad’ is the evil queen, who we haven’t seen hide nor hair of yet in this series.
I’m a tiny bit interested to see Kenna take the throne, but I absolutely cannot suffer through any more of this story.
Actual stars 1.5. I had hoped the second book narration would be better, but alas it was not so...
The story is a 3 star and Troy Duran's narration was excellent!
Stephanie Rose's narration, however was terrible! Her diction is all over the place. She has the male characters sounding simple-minded. Some parts she reads normally and other parts she sounds as if a robot is reading. Very Annoying!
I love that this book picks up right where the last one left off. There is not much to have to remind yourself over as it was so well laid out for you in the previous book. Kenna has joined the rebel army and is in their base camp. She and her 4 men have come together so well and it is agreed that she needs to take down Queen Isadora. Along this road we get loads of surprises in that more chosen are called upon, we learn about the men's pasts more and we see Kenna step up and become more confident in her role. The first book saw her quite timid and scared whereas this one shows her evolving and coming into her own, she really will make a fantastic leader.
I love how the characters grew so much in this book and they're forging their paths on their own terms. They all lead with their heads and hearts and they show that it's ok to do so. Kenna cares about her people and it really shines through. The steam factor is great when you get it, still a bit of a tease but as the saying goes it'll be worth the wait!
Willow Hayes is a new author to me as I have only read Flicker and Flame previously but I will say that she is an author whose books will be in my TBR books forever! She gives so much to her readers and you can feel the emotion pour out of the pages. The details from the location, to powers, to the characters themselves, are impeccable. You can really get a sense of what's happening-like a movie in your mind. The characters are great and realistic (as much as they can be in a supernatural world), they make you feel for them and hope for their story to work out- or in case of the baddies not work out.
This book is packed with emotion that will take for a ride! I highly recommend it!
Kenna (FMC) comes into her own in this book. Shes been a strong character from the beginning but it seems with everything thats going on around her she finds the confidence (even with her a doubters) to take on Queen Isadora. Dirty tricks, a shifter virus and a war brewing (which Kenna is trying to avoid) this book has it all. Add to her harem is increasing - Luka, Teo, Koa, Callum & now Kade & Kitsune Akito. My god do they bring on the steam. So hot!! I love Akito and im so glad he got more book time in this one. It was great to read. Im just loving this series so much & im enjoying every minute reading it
Kenna and her men face new challenges is this 2nd installment of the series. Things heat up as Kenna works towards taking her place as the rightful heir. This book has so much emotional parts that it actually brought me to tears at one point and I was close to messaging her!! The rollercoaster ride is unbelievable! The cliffhanger is even worse! This book is HOT and steamy and Willow has easily become one of my favorite authors! She has found a new stalker in me lol!
This was a fab continuation from Flicker and Flame and I was really excited that I'd finally be able to see how the next step of their journey would progress. Kenna remains a fiercely strong female lead character and her guys are awesome. There's great suspense, intrigue, humour, emotions and steam. It really was a page turner for me and I cannot wait to see what's next for everyone, good and bad ;P, in the next book. Good fun!
OMG!!!!! Rebel and Reign just blew me away. I thought the first book Flicker and Flame was pretty good. Things just got stepped up with RAR!!!
I was all over emotionally with this one. You will literally feel like you are on a rollar coaster. I do not want to give anything away, but I will say that it was amazing.
This series is an excellent read and one I would highly recommend.
I enjoyed this sequel to the first book. It was a bit funny for me that just as I was getting annoyed with the lopsided-ness of the intimacy of the group, and the author started to include the intimacy all around (sex) I was no longer interested in it and thus skipped most of them. Yep I skimmed over them. That would be my biggest dislike is that when the story was finally seeming like to go somewhere, the main Mc’s intuition was ignored and then sex was added in. Ummm no. I don’t care about sed right now. I want Kenna to claim the respect that is owed her and to level up. I would have totally been on okay with vague sex scenes and more story plot. I felt so frustrated over and over again that Kenna seemed to be making little to no progress with her fight skills or magic. If there was progress it was not well displayed. It felt like the author was trying stretch the story out with all the added blurbs from the news. Annoying asses. I started skimming those too. They added little to the story for me. We know the queen is inciting war and being a asshole. Let move on to some actually story progression. Also if Kenna is still at the same level she is now in self confidence and self worth in the next book I will be pissed. Slipping once or twice understandable but if it for the whole dame book again I will be questioning why she should be queen too. Overall I would recommend this book. Tho just be prepared to possibly be slightly irritated with the Kenna and the story progress.
Kenna and her men are now firmly part of the Rebellion. Kenna is told of her importance, however, it doesn't seem like she is valued. Kenna is determined to free her people from Queen Isadora's rule. She wants the shifters safe and the down-worlders treated as equals. But before she can save her people, she needs to find a way to save one of her own.
I enjoyed this second book but found it a little more predictable than book one. I also have some questions. Whys is Khalid allowed to be so disrespectful and dismissive of the future Queen? If the rebels are successful, she will be their leader. Does he plan to replace her and lead himself? If not, why constantly put her down? And why do her men or any of the other advisors allow it? Where is Rya? She's on base and never mentioned. Why wouldn't she eat with Kenna and spend time with her? Just because Kenna met her Chosen, she wouldn't toss her bestie aside. Finally, I know everyone (except me) was excited for Akito to get his human form but why does he never shift into his kitsune form? I loved the relationship between Kenna and Akito in his kitsune form and would personally be weirded out making out with my former pet.
Other than my questions, I did enjoy the story. Kenna is training and growing into her new life. The guys are great and Queen Isadora makes a great villain. I look forward to the conclusion.
After escaping the immediate danger to her life, Kenna is now living at the rebellion base, working on her own abilities. But her position as the future queen is much belittled by Khalid, the commander of the rebellion, who treats her as a naive child and won't take seriously anything she says. Moreover, the Queen increases her moves, and those Kenna cares about are all affected - burning homes, burning businesses, attacked people, and Kenna being blamed as murderer. Only she can turn the tide, by being herself, act on what she believes is right, and reveal to the whole community the real picture. The second book was much better than the first one in terms of writing, less unnecessary descriptions or multiple views on the same scenes that were not needed. I felt the story progressing in much more concise way, plot developing nicely and with focus, and I was more connected to the story and characters than before. There is still room for development, also with respect to Kenna, who I think still did not reach her full potential, but she can in the last book so I am not losing my hope. I loved Akito though :))
Loving how the story progresses with Kenna learning more about her magic and the relationships growing between her and her mates. Kinda wondering how the whole crew isn’t walking around sporting hard-ons most of the day though, since it seems like Kenna is always “getting busy” with one of the mates, and they can sense her emotions through the shared bond. 🤔 The balance between strong and vulnerable got to be a bit much at times, and hearing about Kenna constantly hiding her face in someone’s chest got to be off putting… Wondering what the deal is with Kenna being belittled by Khalid as well. Not as much battling as I would have liked, but hopefully we get more in book 3. Female narrator still sucks, to put it bluntly. Male carries us through, and I frequently found myself looking forward to his chapters.
It took me VERY long to get through this audible but i’m SO glad i did. It probably would have been much harder to follow the story on pages but the narrators voice was so compelling that i really wanted to know what’s going on further.
FMC is a princess and is in the rebellion but really acts like a child with society and doesn’t stand her own ground till the last 1% of the book which annoyed me and that’s why -0.75.
But the MMCs? the connections? learning new magics? loved all about it. Seemed somewhat unnecessary long but 2/5 spicy still.
Wow! Rebel and Reign was a fantastic read! The book picks up right where the last one left off and was action packed right to the end. Kenna has grown into her role as princess. She is sarcastic, snarky and full of attitude. When she becomes Queen she wants to create a culture of equality for shifters, underworlders and humans. There were a few more revelations and as always the present Queen continues to put obstacles up to stop Kenna from taking the throne. I thought this book was a great follow up and it kept me enthralled that I read it in one day! Can’t wait for the next!
Okay, better, much better. By the end, I found I knew the MMCs and their traits. I am enjoying their banter and the relationship developing. All the characters seem to have grown in depth and I'm now invested in their outcome.
The story is filled with action, spice, cosiness and darkness. It's a good mix, although still not the greatest, just misses the mark on some things. But it no longer matters, the plot, the relationships, and the action keep me entertained and enjoying this world and intriguing politics.
While I wasn't completely in love with the first book of this series, I did enjoy it enough to grab book 2 and boy and I glad I did! Kenna and her men really kick it up a notch in this book with a bigger story and more action. They must defeat the Queen and end her tyranny in book 3. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Now that Kenna has her memories back, things are changing in her world. With six Chosen now, she intends to help the revolution return her to the throne. Surprising changes in leadership and a possible cure for the shifter disease changes the direction of the shifter-caster pending war.
Storyline and plot are great, great take on magic and how it works, but the world building is lacking and it takes away from the overall story. Character building is a little lacking too as the growth of the MC lacks depth and is slow pacing. Some things are rushed and others are slow but over all, I’ll keep reading.
Just like book 1 chapters were left hanging with no end to how the day, conversation etc.. went. I couldn't even finish the book because I got so frustrated and confused on what happened in the time gaps.
Not as good as book one, but still pretty great. The nicknames are driving me bananas, but that's a personal preference.... literally every single person in the book has a nickname and that's all too much for me. The plotline is still fantastic and the relationship dynamics are awesome.
This book is so good. I love Kenna's journey to get to the point where she values herself and her opinions. I love all of her men and how supportive and protective that they are of her. I think I just love this series!
A continuation of the first book and it just keeps getting better. There's even more brewing than before. Lots of action, suspense, twists and turns. An engrossing page turner that I couldn't put down. I'm looking forward to finding out what's in store for Kenna and her mates in the next book.
This book is flaming hot! Hot scenes that are oh so good. But there’s also sad and heart wrenching ones were you want to cry and throw your phone. She really keeps you on your toes and wanting you to keep reading and not to put this book down!
Love, passion, family, strength, dedication... This book has everything. I am so excited for book 3 and as soon as it comes out, I am on it. A must read
Amazing series. Love Kenna and her men. The story is filled with twist and turns, suspense and drama. The plot was easy to follow and captivated me from the start.
