Rate this book
From polar explorers and politicians to CEOs and sports coaches, we are fascinated with the makeup of leaders.

How do they thrive under pressure and inspire others to do the same? How do they establish a culture of long-term success?

Performance psychologist Tom Young has worked closely with teams and individuals at the highest level of professional sport. He has seen how leaders in these high-pressure environments communicate, how they maintain focus and respond to challenges. In The Making of a Leader , Young shares the practical principles of sustained elite performance and shows how any individual can add value to their own business or organisation by applying these insights.

You will learn how to develop a leadership philosophy that is true to your values, effectively manage and get results from individuals and teams, establish a high-performance culture and bring value to your organisation - in short, the ingredients that make a leader. These lessons are based on interviews

- Stuart Lancaster , current Leinster coach and former Head Coach of the England national RFU team
- Ashley Giles , ECB Director of Cricket during England's 2019 World Cup win
- Gary Kirsten , record-breaking former international batsman and World Cup-winning coach of the Indian national team
- Dan Quinn , Head Coach of Atlanta Falcons and a Super Bowl winner with Seattle Seahawks

- Sean Dyche , Burnley FC manager
- Michael Maguire , Head Coach of the New Zealand national rugby league team

interesting title and concept. however, the author fails to deliver anything novel. the book is full of many short topics and platitudes, without going deep anywhere. quoting the perspectives of the interviewees too frequently, it also gets hard to read.

however, every chapter has a nice 1 page summary that is really well done.

Great concept for a book and an interesting read touching on a range of leadership lessons - but really disappointing that the author chose to focus on interviewing just male leaders for the book.

The author suggests to look at some of the world’s top coaches who could teach us lessons in leadership that could be applied in many different settings. Set clear long-term goals, but do check in with team members and assistants on a day-to-day basis; building good relationships would assist you determine any needed adjustments. In addition, use short-term tasks to achieve long-tem goals. With your long-run goal in mind, you will gain a better idea of what you need, therefore motivated enough to keep going.

This book is fine.

It has solid leadership advice that some may complain is nothing new, but when so many “leaders” in our world fail at all of these things, I commend Young for repeating them.

Great advice that should be taken seriously.

However, the writing was VERY basic and pretty much just filling in the space between interviews.

Cool stories but little depth or execution suggestions. I get where the author was trying to go, but think they sacrificed an opportunity to pull out some cool nuggets with depth. They went for quantity. Worth a read for sure, just go in knowing what you will get and that you may have to make your own depth
